Hold Back
Dark Chamber
Control
Review: Dungeon Meat is the new label and production outfit brought to you by Dungeon Masters Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha. Packing a serious punch, it's aim is to present tracks designed specifically to rock the party and shake the sound system. Originally conceived as a platform for their own musical visions it soon became apparent that they would have to open the doors to a select few who shared their ambition to make no messing, hard hitting house grooves. One of these artists is the mysterious Blunt Instruments who has the honour of kicking off the label. After road testing his huge club hammer "Hold Back" Brawther and Da Cunha knew it had to be on Dungeon Meat as it epitomised exactly the sound they wanted to present. "Hold Back" has been a firm fixture in their sets and even got cut to dubplate by Jeremy Underground Paris. It's not all about the A-side though as Blunt Instruments craft 2 other killer club cuts for the flip side. We won't go on too much trying to describe how good this EP is ... instead we'll let the music do the talking.

In The Dark (dub)
Justified
Freaks Of The Industry
Review: The mysterious Adesse has been kicking about for about a year or so now, appearing on labels like Trus'me's Prime Numbers and the first (white label) release for the Make Love In Public Places label - while also turning in some Adesse versions of Theo Parrish, Jack Master and Nick Holder. Cast your mind back to the first three multicoloured 12"s Cottam released in 2009 and you'll have an idea of what to expect from the first Adesse Versions EP on its label of the same name. There's a tip of the hat to Madonna on "Justified", while "In The Dark" throws a soulful acapella over the top of bouncy deep house chords and straight disco drums, meanwhile the dub of this keeps the chorus' baking track, while reducing the musicality in other parts. "Freaks Of The Industry" has a real Mark E feel to it - and by the sounds of it Adesse has creatively turned a vocal snippet from the 20th Century Steel Band's "Heaven and Hell is on Earth" (famously used by Grand Master Flash) into the track's main hook.

Review: The eighth release on Sccucci Manucci sees the imprint pack a hefty eight productions that traverse various house sounds from around the world onto two slabs of handstamped wax. From Coeo's bouncy and vocal track through to Mella Dee's dark and distinctively UK-centric track the label has tried to explore the sheer wealth of production talent on offer at the moment.

Huh, What! (Laszlo Dancehall Exercise)
The Fat Rat
Monkey Wrench
Review: Dutch duo Detroit Swindle are set to release their hotly-anticipated debut album, Boxed Out, on Dirt Crew this March. This EP gives a taste of what's to come, offering three album tracks and a booming Laszlo Dancehall rework of the title track (think '90s Sound Factory-era NYC tribal stomp). There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the retro-futurist garage keys and bumpin' grooves of "The Fat Rat", and the midtempo Balearic house sweetness of "Monkey Wrench" (think warm keys and swooshing electronics), to the hands-in-the-air, vests-off throb of "Huh, What!", the EP's most rush-inducing moment.

Loop
Review: The Puss label overseen by breakout producer HNNY and Studio Barnhus founder Kornel Kovacs continues to be a source for club ready sounds, with the all caps loving producer at the helm for this much anticipated fourth release. Based around a liberal sample of the Queen Bee, "Sneeze" is one of those club jams that will appeal to party DJs, starting at a hip-hop tempo before a neat little vocal edit sees the track crank up the BPM exponentially and transformed into a no-nonsense house cut. It's a pretty simple idea executed perfectly and you are likely to hear this all over the festivals this summer.

Openin' Up
M Flight
Review: Pressing issues may have delayed the Pender Street Steppers' debut on Mood Hut Recordings, but this fresh single on PPU should more than plug the gap. Those who may have heard the Mood Hut outfit's Life In The Zone cassette last year will know what to expect: "Openin' Up" combines jittery conga percussion with rubbery bass and a positively uplifting sense of melody that nevertheless errs on the grubbier side of the spectrum, while "M Flight" is even more summery in it outlook, as a humorous '80s-inspired piece of melodic sampling propels its blissful chords and carefree bassline. As with all Mood Hut-affiliated releases, this won't last long...

A Novel Gesture
We Come In Peace
Akiara
Review: Always committed to bringing interesting rhythms to bear on the world of house and techno, Aybee is back on his home turf with a fresh salvo of off-kilter drums and otherworldly synth tones that further his quest into pastures new for time-honoured dance music. "A Novel Gesture" rumbles with gritty kicks and stalking dub techno chords, and yet still manages to sound nimble on its feet. "We Come In Peace" is more purposefully floaty, swirling as it does around a central pad that takes on a three dimensional shape through some clever sound design, with just a gentle house beat underneath to keep it moving. "Akiara" is a devout bliss-out track not least in its delayed and filtered pulses pitched perfectly for heavy-lidded transcendence.

Review: Some artists come and go with the changing of the tides; others transcend the trends and become seminal in the process. If there were a dance music hall of fame, Groove Armada would be longtime inductees. Recently the duo made the decision to step away from the arenas and return to their roots, composing a collection of raw, foundation-shaking tracks, designed for the warehouse, and Moda Black wasted no time in snapping them up - the resulting EP speaks for itself. Powerful and sonically precise, this is GA in basement mode!

Review: If you're looking for classic deep house reissues, the Apollonia crew are doing an ever increasingly great job of turning out the truly sought after gems amongst the chaff. Kerri Chandler's Night Moves EP that originally put out "Sunday Sunlight" is now fetching silly prices elsewhere, but it's not hard to see why when you wrap your ears around the swinging deep house master at his very best. From the warm, bubbly bassline to the life-affirming chords to the sweet, distant vocal hook, it's everything you want from the man. To round the package off in fine style, Delano Smith slides in for a remix that dubs the track out with a soft but effective touch.

Review: INT. BURGER SHOP. SECRET DJ HIDEOUT. NORTH LONDON SOMEWHERE DJ Taylor 'Urulu' Freels speaks to the Waitress behind the counter. URULU Get me a Burger; hold the cheese, and a side of fries too doll face. WAITRESS Sure thing honey Urulu turns around and leans back on the counter, he slowly casts his gaze over the DJs and vagabonds who call this place home. WAITRESS Here you go sugar, number 32, why don't you get yourself a seat, I'll bring it over. Urulu turns and grabs the receipt out from the waitress' fingers, briefly looking down to confirm the number before flashing a wink in her direction. He leavers himself away from the counter and begins a slow walk over to the corner of the restaurant, noticing a free chair on the way. Just as he approaches the free chair a shrill voice shouts out SHRILL VOICE So... we meet again... OOO-ROO-LOOO Urulu, swivels on his heal, a bolt of terror and adrenaline rush through his body. He knows that voice... It's his nemesis... Algorithm Man. URULU Of all the Burger Joints in all of North London, you had to come to this one. ALGORITHM MAN Let's throw down bitch From no where 'Clear' by Cybotron starts playing. Algorithm Man starts popping and locking to its crisp and clean 808 beats... he is so good at 'The Robot' people start applauding and cheering. URULU You've got no game Algorithm Man... let me show you how it's done Urulu launches 3 burgers at Algorithm Man's head, each one meeting with its target whilst perfectly timed with the still blaring 'Clear'. Urulu flips himself into a 'Suicide' landing on a large table; he then propels himself into the 'Windmill'. Fries, Burgers, Sodas and Onion rings from the table get caught up in the updraft of his crazy-quick 'Windmill' and begin to relentlessly pound Algorithm Man. WAITRESS *Screams* Algorithm Man's 'Robot' is no match for Urulu's super human 'Windmill'. The sheer amount of greasy food now stuck to Algorithm Man weighs him down so much he topples backwards like a felled tree. ALGORITHM MAN OKAY, OKAY... You win this time OOO-ROO-LOO... But I'll be back, mark my words... I'll be back With that Algorithm Man flees the Burger Joint, leaving a trail of fries, ketchup and shame in his wake. The music stops. Urulu dusts himself down. Flicking a single fry from his shoulder he sits down in the free chair and eats his burger & fries. Urulu mops his mouth with a clean serviette, gets up and throws a L50 note on the table. URULU That should cover the damage He walks out the door goes home and writes four tracks for Manucci's Mistress. THE END

The Clear After The Storm
Ajna (Soft Rocks remix)
Review: Italian producer Domenico Camarilla has hit a rich vein of form under the Jose Manuel guise of late, supplementing output on his own Black Pepper label with feted appearances for Tusk Wax, Is It Balearic?, Lectric Sands and Citizen Kane's Disques Sinthomme. Given his profile, a union with the Soft Rocks affiliated Kinfolk label makes utmost sense and Jose Manuel fans will find much to enjoy about Ajna. Both the title track and "The Clear After The Storm" are steeped in Eastern mysticism and feature heavy percussion from the man Manuel, whilst the accompanying Soft Rocks remix will appeal to fans of Rabih Beaini's "Tanki Tanki" edit.

Pixel Music - "M-Theory"

DJ Qu - "Undescribed (Believer)"
Review: Four years on from the previous instalment, DJ QU's Strength Music returns with a third edition of their Semesters series, with contributions from Pixel Music, Nicuri and QU himself this time around. Leading the way is "M- Theory" from Pixel Music, a lesser spotted alias of Italian producer Massimiliano 'Hazylujah' Vianello which selfishly grips the entire A Side and quite rightly so as it's a potent production filled with mind bending potential. Having recently flirted with Joey Anderson's Inimeg operation, Nicuri returns to the Strength cause on the B Side offering the pensive deepness of "Thoughts Of You" whilst DJ QU signs off the 12" with the bugged out beat down of "Undescribed (Believer)" which is what Parliament would be making if they were to surface in today's sonic climate.

To The Deep
Review: The mysterious Deetroit swiftly follows their UDR debut late last year with another selection of ruff and ready hardware house exploring the deeper ends of the genre. "Secret Passage" is full of pumping chords and pounding kicks obscured by a healthy serving of grit, while "Deepression" explores the kind of resonant chimes and thick bass you'd expect from Mr Fingers, albeit with a contemporary twist. On the flip, "Deepssential" pairs classic filtered chords with a robust analogue bassline with all the necessary Motor City attitude, while "To The Deep" offers a peak time slice of house with added helping of machine funk.

Review: Good news for all those wanting to bag a whole heap of Henrik Schwarz goodness in one place, as Defected do the right thing and pay homage to a very worthy addition to their House Masters series. Of course there's no way a mere double pack could begin to cover the back catalogue the prolific producer has weaved his magic over, but there's no doubt the selections on offer are some of his finest. From the world-beating remix of Detroit Experiment's "Think Twice" to the powerful message and even more powerful bass lick of Emmanuel Jal's "Kuar", if you're lacking any of these gems then do something to rectify the situation!

Something In The Air (Bonobo remix)
Review: Hypercolour's Hype Ltd series returns to Maya Jane Coles' Don't Put Me In Your Box EP from 2011 to deliver three expectedly forward-thinking remixes. Livity Sound's Kowton continues to show just how widely appreciated his grime-influenced techno sound is across the board as he reworks the tech house of "Parallel Worlds" into something metallic and eerie. Meanwhile the melodic sounds of "Something In The Air" are transformed by Dark Sky into a skewed bass-heavy house track with orchestration reminiscent of Floating Points, and by Bonobo into a more mainstream-friendly slice of house that will go down well with the Disclosure crowd.

Review: Essential '90s NYC house cuts on this new reissue from Slow To Speak! A collaboration between Lee Rodriguez & Steve John Craden, The African Dream make a well desrved appaerance on Slow To Speak's Core Series, presenting two cuts from 1994's Eightball doublepack. "Makin' A Living" provides a late night jam filled with classic strings and Virgo Four-style deepness, while "All The Same Family" shows the pair's hip hop influences in its tumbling rhythms and samples. For those tired out by the constant referencing of '90s house in modern productions, this is a must check release.

I'm So Deep
Review: Rush Hour's latest reissue focus is Vincent Floyd, a producer with a small clutch of 12? releases in the mid-90s for Dance Mania, Relief and Gherkin Records offshoot Resound Records. Although more from the producer is promised in the year to come, the first record is Your Eyes, a reissue the producer's debut for Dance Mania. Released back in 1990, the five-track 12? brandished a title track that was pretty much a perfect example of vocal deep house from the era, and this reissued edition from Rush Hour pares the record down to just three tracks, with the Chan-featuring title cut complemented by an instrumental and "I'm So Deep," described by the label as a "sinister haunting instrumental jackin track".

In My Life
Extacy (Danny J Lewis dub)
Review: Ultra Knites return with their first release of 2014, the follow up to their debut from late last year which gained the duo much credibility and recognition from some of the scenes leading players. UKR002 finally sees the release of a 'Extacy', a track that has been in demand for over a year having been used as a 'secret weapon' in the duo's own DJ sets. It has been described as genius, but the formula is simple - a stabby rhodes riff accompanied by an infectious vocal hook while a cleverly filtered pad weaves in and out until eventually, the filters open and the track erupts. UK veteran Danny J Lewis steps up for remix duties - a personal inspiration to the pair since the mid 90's who delivers his own unique stamp on the track. "In My Life" takes things in another direction, however the duo's trademark sound remains instantly recognisable - throbbing basslines, filtered synth pads, ruffed up beats and a keyboard solo. Once again this EP has something for everyone and as always, we bring it to you on 180g vinyl.

How Can We Know?
Review: Acclaimed for many of his compositions on labels such as Aesthetic Audio, ART, Ornate, alongside his blistering DJ performances. AER boss Miles drops the label's first and his debut album. Deep is a word often used to describe a lot of music currently out there, but not many touch the depths of this superb LP on Atmospheric Existence. Miles touches on many shades of sound with his trademark emotive warmth. Melancholy but positive vibrations flow out alongside abstract grooves. Hypnotic elements grace the journey, creating an otherworldy sense of space and distant unknown entities. Feeling & mood leap out of this LP at every twist and unexpected turn, circumnavigating the deep spectrum. Since his early releases, his imprint AER has become a highly respected imprint globally with a dedicated following. This LP was constructed to stand the test of time and stand it does, firmly rooted in the Cosmos.

Mello (feat Matthias Keul)
Review: The Black Key team return with the second in their limited, vinyl-only series, with Cologne based producer, Pawas, delivering a truly excellent and diverse 4 track EP, which oozes quality from start to finish. "Dubba" commences the EP in an understated but crisp fashion which uses delayed rim shots, subtle synth stabs and perfectly executed sub bass to build a flittering, shuffling groove, which has unmistakable dance floor appeal. "DA" builds from nothing into a pulsating and hypnotic houser, moulding loose hi hats, layered claps and an acid-infused bass line to supreme effect. Add in expertly-placed rising synths, plus a haunting vocal sample, subtly used, and you have a serious track on your hands. The production versatility of Pawas is demonstrated on the flip with "2047" - such a contrast from the opening 2 tracks, but delightfully so. This is guaranteed to make heads nod and feet tap, mixing together jazzy keys, fluid tom rolls and perfectly panned percussion. Then the vocal drops. Last, but certainly not least, we have "Mello" which sees Pawas partner up with Matthias Keul to great effect. A more down-tempo and musical affair, rounding off the EP is true style. Vinyl only.

Review: Woof! There's been some major unexplained delays for this latest slab from the Skudge White series but really the wait has been worth it! Low-key producer Cliff Lothar is at the helm, and this record follows a killer issue on I-f's Viewlexx imprint, with the moody electro-inspired sound of the White Savage EP causing one Discogs user to speculate on some connection to the Hague production axis. Lothar's EP for Skudge White has him continuing to develop this sound across four tracks, with the label suggesting the record is a "somewhat darker take on his trade sound." "Tangaxuan II" is supposedly a track "that invokes the early Warp catalogue spirit" while "Audiomess" would be welcome on the B Side of an old Bunker 12".
