Sick Of It All
Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights; you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Zunga (feat Rubi Dan)
No No No (Serial Killaz remix)
Review: Two hip-swinging jungle joints from booty-bass bootleg kings Deekline and Ed Solo... With Rubi Dan's inimitable chatter and chubby roll on the bass, "Zunga" is an instant 'sing along' smasher, saturated in reggae juice and sun dried on the Jamaican Blue Mountains. "No No No", meanwhile, sees the Dawn Penn classic go under the expert knives of the Serial Killaz. Bulging with bulbous bass, the skank factor is set to max and the vocal is positioned perfectly in the mix... You really can't fail with this.

I'm A Creator (feat Skittles)
Happy 5
Review: Exit Records and Dub Phizix were responsible for one of the most iconic drum and bass tracks of recent times with last year's Marka; a collaboration with vocalist Strategy that proved there was still plenty of room for ingenuity within the genre. Fast forward some twelve months, and Dub Phizix signals his return to D Bridge's label with a new release of equal billing. "I'm A Creator" has been a long term dub plate weapon for Mr Phizix, deftly matching the spitfire MCing skills of Skittles with a far too rude, bleep laden half stepper riddim. Complementing this Dub Phizix demonstrates his prowess for the drunken rave style on the down stepping "Happy 5".

Count On Me (original)
Count On Me (Andy C remix)
Review: Top five-smashing Baby D homage, "Count On Me" was, without argument, one of the biggest tunes of the summer 2013. In case it's not secured a sweet spot in your collection yet, here it is on Ram wax. The original is fuelled with pristine unashamed 90s vibes, all breakbeats and emphatic vocals, while Andy C takes us kicking and screaming back onto modern day dancefloors with his barn-storming D&B remix. A runaway success story of the year.

Black Heart
Wonderland
Review: Freshly signed to the Ram family, Frankee is one a serious roll right now. Across these two contrasting tracks he shows just why; "Black Heart" is a firing slab of darkness, barbed with neuro nuances. Deep analogue bassline bubbles while the eastern vocal sample is edited with the same panache as Audio (a la "Headroom"). "Wonderland", meanwhile, tells a totally different tale; vibrant, euphoric and coated in a vocal message we can all testify to, it's an instant end-of-night smack-down laced with all the old school thrills and spills you'd expect. D&B doesn't get much better than this.

Unofficial Jah
Outta Endz
Review: It's been a year since his last release ("Strobe/Goliath" on his own Dom & Roland label) but boy has it been worth the wait... "Unofficial Jah" is astoundingly dark and textured with myriad levels of precision processed sound design. Rich in every aspect, it's Dom and his trusty Roland at their finest. "Outta Ends" is equally stunning. Much more pummelling in its dynamic make up, there's a strong feeling to the dark drums and loopy vocal sample. Dom & Roland kills it every single time, but this one is particularly special. Do not miss out.

PhonoMatt & TommyBoy - "XXX Funk" (BadboE remix)
Review: Usually known for their stupendously funky capers around the 110-130 mark, Breakbeat Paradise have flipped the switch with this special from Fab 'The Captain' Samperi and friends. Vibe-winding 170 swingers, both versions "5 O'Clock" leap with early-day jump up mischief and happy-slap riddims. "XXX Funk" sings a similar tune but with a little more punk to the live bass element. Elsewhere BadBoe adds some DMX savagery while PhonoMatt goes solo on the crutch grabbing nu-funk grinder "Unity".

Cause4concern - "Peep Show" (Audio remix)
Audio - "Headroom VIP"
Review: It's an Audio extravaganza as Virus Recordings tease us in the build-up to his fourth album Force Of Nature. First up is a remix of Cause4Concern's classic "Peep Show". Adding more of a muscular body to the early noughties classic, he's brought it bang up to date without losing any of the original's icy sentiments. Next up, a killer VIP of "Headroom". One of 2012's biggest tracks (without argument), he's carefully drawn out the dynamic to ensure it still gets the hair-raising reaction it has done for the last 18 months while pushing it further into the deep, dark D&B future. Incredible.

Alone (feat Tasha Baxter)
Beyond Reality
Alone (Fourward remix)
Clamber (feat Noisia)
Review: Taken from their latest album Primitive Technique, "Alone" is a soaring, surging vocal track that manages to maintain a turbo-charged drive while causing all manner of rushes, tingles and other sensory stimulus. "Beyond Reality" flips the switch with a blast of layered, reversed warps and scratches. Slamming, adamant audio, it's one of their heaviest cuts to date. Meanwhile on vinyl two we find well-respected Austrian newcomers Fourward adding their own gritty twist to "Alone" while "Clamber" sees the New Zealand act lock horns with Vision bosses Noisia in the ultimate neuro battle. "Alone"? Not for long when you're playing tracks like these...

Bloody Mary
2nd Chance
Review: The Juno review team's hangover cure of choice is celebrated on this release from Innerground Records which pairs label boss and all round Brazilian drum and bass legend Marky once more with his Japanese counterpart Makoto. Not that we suggest you slip the needle on "Bloody Mary" when you are suffering from a heavy night however, it's rolling rhythms, heavy basslines and unmistakable talent for infectious keys are far more appropriate for the times that cause the hangover! On the flip TI demonstrates further why he's being tipped as a rising talent with the bouncy little half step business of "2nd Chance"!

Be Yourself
Review: BTK takes time away from his operations with Optiv to deliver an impeccable double-header on the D&B institution Renegade. The result? A full-bodied pit bull platter of electrifying bass that's reminiscent of the Virus style. "Be Yourself" is more angular neuro joint with a head-twisting vocal loop that worms its way through the mix to great hypnotising effect. Both are absolute slammers. Quintessential D&B.

Review: Some two year's after Exit Recording's era defining Mosaic compilation, D Bridge ushers in the next stage of the Autonomic sound with a second installment. Whilst that debut compilation was closely associated with the surfeit of artists with close ties to Exit, this second volume sees D Bridge look farther afield for contributions and this is reflected in the broader tone of sounds you will find across the three double LP parts that make up Mosaic Vol 2's physical release. Part One sets the tone, drawing in works from the likes of Machinedrum, J Kenzo, Om Unit & Sam Binga and Kryptic Minds with Travis Stewart's soulfully inclined contribution "The Palace" a true highlight.

Noisia & Calyx & Teebee - "Hyenas"
Noisia & Evol Intent - "The Liquid"
Review: Noisia, Calyx & Teebee, Evol Intent... Three massive names on one mighty release, before you even press play you know this is going to be very special. "Hyenas" takes its name from the way they've made the bass laugh with a rapid manic motif. So sharp it can trim you a neat pirate goatee while you're spinning it, this shows why Noisia and Calyx & TeeBee are respected as some of the VERY best names in the game. "The Liquid" is equally shocking; here we find ourselves enveloped by moaning, groaning synths before a paranoid riff and stomping beats take to the fore and tear your entire face off. Remarkably heavy and unarguably essential.

Gravity
Catapult
Review: Two slamdunking slices of raw drum & bass insanity, Mind Vortex follow up spring 2013's massive "Alive/Arc" release with another teeth-baring, grizzly double header. "Gravity" packs an almighty punch, hinting at the legacy of Ed Rush, Optical, Evol Intent and Phace & Misanthrop. The scale of the rising riff truly is the soundtrack to a mad man's dream. "Catapult" follows a similar trajectory with a powerful nagging bass riff that pushes it's one-note message with crystal clarity before dropping into an epic synth-struck riff.

The Perfect Blues (Machinedrum remix)
The Perfect Blues (Jacques Greene remix)
Review: Recent Ninja signing and all round great New York soul hope Jesse Boykins gets some choice remix treatment from a pair of artists who lend themselves to diverse assignments outside their common generic fields. Jacques Greene brings a whisper of his house leanings to bear, but focuses more on intricate reams of warm melody to work around behind Boykins' breathless vocal. Machinedrum meanwhile brings a more kinetic flavour with his inimitable drum programming, crafting a stunning syncopation with the vocal that leaves the tune running in two directions yet sounding utterly fluid at the same time.

Seek & Find (Jinx In dub Meets Kanjah)
Review: Just like Hot Cakes and Disco Cakes, Deekline's Jungle Cakes imprint deals exclusively in fool-proof party fodder. This release is no exception as he invites breakbeat stalwart Jinx to the fold for two insatiable dubwise skankers. "Amen In Session" is a modern day jungle jump up piece with the perfect blend of disarming bass and head-spinning amens while "Seek & Find" takes a Horace Andy classic and gives it a savage turbo boosting. Like we said; fool-proof party fodder. Yummy.

What You Had (feat Steo)
Review: Flipping the switch from their recent disco funk collaboration with Kathy Brown, AI delve deep into D&B's dark history books with this incredible tribute to the mighty Dillinja (the clue is in the title). "What You Had" plays the perfect foil, not only soothing your soul with Steo's honey-coated vocal but showing yet another side to AI's seemingly never-ending list of talents. Deliriously good.
