Feel For You VIP
Jungle Heroes
Spartan Law VIP
Studio Dub
Review: Want to learn how to make authentic contemporary jungle? Check anything Bladerunner has ever produced. Case in point; this epic four-tracker. Originally released in February 2013, the emotive vocal shock-out "Feel For You" gets a robust VIP treatment. "Jungle Heroes", meanwhile, balances bright vibrant synth blasts with thick, deep sub work. The Andy C-accredited "Spartan Law" goes under the VIP blade for added impact. Finally "Studio (Dub)" completes the release with the most classical jungle sounding vibe; wobbling subs, whistling breakbeats and spacious dub noises and processes fuse to create the quintessential roller. It doesn't get more authentic than this.

Gravity
Catapult
Review: Two slamdunking slices of raw drum & bass insanity, Mind Vortex follow up spring 2013's massive "Alive/Arc" release with another teeth-baring, grizzly double header. "Gravity" packs an almighty punch, hinting at the legacy of Ed Rush, Optical, Evol Intent and Phace & Misanthrop. The scale of the rising riff truly is the soundtrack to a mad man's dream. "Catapult" follows a similar trajectory with a powerful nagging bass riff that pushes it's one-note message with crystal clarity before dropping into an epic synth-struck riff.

Mark System - "Tune For Teebee"
Ed Rush - "Pheromone"
Review: Part 2 of Subtitles four pronged Sine Language 12" sampler series features Mark System and Ed Rush. Teebee's sense of curatorial skill has been displayed on the previous compilations/mix CDs released on Subtitles but these samplers hint that he's excelled with the forthcoming 27 track Sine Language release. Mark System's return to Subtitles proves to be as viciously effective as his 2011 debut Yeah/ But... with "Tune For Teebee" a vicious concoction of hollowed jungle drums and bruising, stabbed basslines. On the flip Ed Rush makes an all too rare appearance with "Pheromone" which is a master class in rolling drum & bass.

Covert
Venture
Review: Nurtured by industrial strength D&B brand Renegade Hardware, Friske has been setting his tech agenda for many years now. Here he makes his debut on Metalheadz with two contrasting compositions that showcase his repertoire neatly. "Covert" is as hard-nosed as it gets; slamming steppy beats, warped hoover screams and grizzling, processed elements, it fits Metalheadz well defined sonic remit like a snug gauntlet. "Venture", meanwhile, comes with wafts of cool soul thanks to its washing pads. Don't go thinking it's a slow and sexy jam, though; there's still plenty of beef in the undulating subs and chiseled drum arrangement. Heavy.

Teebee - "Human Reptile" (Calyx & Teebee remix)
Stealth - "Wrong Un"
Review: Whilst still very active, the Subtitles label has taken something close to a back seat in recent years as label founder Teebee focused on his ongoing studio work with Calyx (which sprouted the excellent All Or Nothing LP) Should you require some sign that Teebee's focus is square back on maintaining Subtitles profile then the Sine Language compilation is all that and then some. Due for release as a full 27 track compilation later this month, Sine Language features Subtitles regulars such as Xtrah, System, Ulterior Motive and Hybris the return of Polar aka K, a rare solo track from Ed Rush and of course, a couple of cuts from Calyx & Teebee. The first of four 12" sampler released this week sees label boss Teebee featuring prominently with his "Human Reptile" sonically ripped apart on a remix done between himself and Calyx. Stealth lines the flip with the appropriately titled "Wrong Un" - nuff said.

Let You Go (feat Tiki)
Freedom Come (feat DRS)
You Can Dream (feat Steo)
10 Outta 10 (feat Jamakabee)
Review: Continuing their current vein of rich form via labels such as Metalheadz and UKF, AI let rip with four more emphatic D&B blinders. Each one tickles a different psyche of the dancefloor; "You Can Dream" is the radio-ready roller complete with soul smouldering vocals from the currently unavoidable Steo while "Let You Go" is a peak time, spine-melting injection of raw euphoria. If you're fonder of AI's darker side then head straight for both "Freedom Come" and "10 Outta 10"; both sporting two of the best MCs in the game, they're undiluted tear-ups that guarantee chaos.

Ulterior Motive - "Gang Rule"
Chrisp - "Hound" (Ulterior Motive remix)
Review: Ahead of it's full release as a 27 track digital compilation, Teebee's Subtitles rolls out the third of four 12" Sine Language samplers. Label regular Ulterior Motive leads the way with "Gang Rule," a particularly nasty production with a bassline that sounds like a pitbull growling doing it's best to intimidate the ruff techy drum programming. Somewhere deep in the production it sounds like a man is repeatedly getting punched in the guts which we presume is the effect "Gang Rule" will have on the dancefloor. Ulterior Motive ensure they have a 100% appearance record on Sine Language Part 3 with an equally take-no-prisoners sounding remix of "Hound" by Chrisp.

Optiv & CZA - "Hindsight"
Brain Crisis - "Fight Ogres"
Review: Optiv & CZA and Brain Crisis share sides on this final vinyl sampler from the forthcoming Sine Language compilation due out on Teebee's Subtitles label at the end of September. The Optiv and CZA pairing of Ed Holmes and Mark Clements is a relatively new one with the two producers only releasing together since the turn of the year. The furious "Hindsight" demonstrates they are fully aware of each others strengths however with elements of lightness and darkness perfectly balanced throughout. As a neat contrast "Fight Ogres" from Brain Crisis is a jerking mass of rude abstraction that proves hard to predict.

DJ Panik - "Wheel Up" (feat Dijeyow)
Psychofreud - "Jah Jah See Dem A Come" (feat Dijeyow)
Review: Spanish skankfest Dubnest return with two bold reggae rollers that will score instant love with fans of Run Tingz, Congo Natty, Serial Killaz, Chopstick Dub and anything Aries puts to wax. Sun-kissed, warm and full of rich, organic elements, both sides on this 12" cut will juicy Jamaican authenticity. "Wheel Up" is the more dramatic of the two (as its name suggests) with Dijeyow's vocals cutting through with real urgency. "Jah Jah See Dem A Come" is more thoughtful and deeper with some beautiful harmonies on the chorus. Fantastic on headphones and dancefloors alike.

Solemnity
Fulcrum
Wave Upon Wave
Lone Star
Review: Auxiliary boss and audio adventurer ASC invites us to get with the "Programme" as he lays down four beautiful compositions that flitter around the idea of concept of drum & bass while remaining wholly unclassifiable and sprung with surprise. "Solemnity" is a beat heavy trip into the cosmos, all crumpled beats and icy textures. "Fulcrum", meanwhile, casts a much dreamier, mesmerising effect thanks to rippling synths and breath-taking washes. "Wave Upon Wave" has a touch of the Vangelis about it; cinematic, wistful and star-gazing, it's full of emotion. "Lone Star" closes the show with the most D&B flavoured track on the EP; the breakbeats cascade delicately in the background while pianos weave in and out of the mix, held in place by ambient pads.

Tap Dat (Chords remix)
Dark Passenger (June Miller remix)
Review: A serious next-level package for Ram right here; three of their most recent signings, all repped on one killer EP... Two highlights from Rene's impressive LP are remixes by two of the imprint's freshest faces. Chords shows his darkest side to date, adding a gritty, teeth-baring edge to "Tap Dat" while June Miller do what they do best and take "Dark Passenger" down to a haunted house basement and fill it with raw unadulterated fear by way of mean noises and industrial strength badness. In a word: naughty.

Voltaire
Heron Blue
Review: Need For Mirrors have been enjoying a huge year for releases; they've consistently battered us with elephantine 12s on the regular via labels such as their own Zoltar, V, Metalheadz, Symmetry, Dispatch, Playaz and Flexout. Naturally this Commercial Suicide release is no exception; "Voltaire" is the real body slammer of the set - all tripletty beats and a screaming processed lead that flares up and down the spectrum. "Heron Blue" makes a moody nod to jazz with its yearning trumpet tones and resonant bass swing while retaining their uncompromising edge by way of a second vicious alien bass texture. Unarguably big.

Gamma & Hydro - "Mayday"
Spinline & Hydro - "True"
Review: It's an all-out Hydro showdown as he collaborates with two compatriots for a gritty, purist D&B double-up. "Mayday" rolls with vigour thanks to a mean undercurrent of subs, sharp processed stabs and some really captivating, well EQ'd snares. "True" takes a steppier riddim, giving it a much more angular edge. Peppered with all manner of processed glitches and processed digital squiggles, it's yet another immaculate otherworldly audio adventure from Horizons.

Gripped
Qwer Key
Review: Two more slabs of golden ice from Manchester's leading D&B diplomat, "Gripped" is a punctuated stepper, galvanised by ominous echoes of grumbling bass drones and whispers of cold Detroitian synths. "Qwer Key", meanwhile, digests the whole history of dub and repackages it by way of a tight, tripletty riddim and a nagging melodic bass hook. Like a cross between "Temple Step" and "Bodyrock", it epitomises D&B's exciting on-going creative reinventions. Gripped? You certainly will be!
