Motion The Dance
Luminous
Review: ** REPRESS ** In a recent interview, Jack Dunning suggested he was "just another dubstep producer washing up on techno's beach in 2012". In many ways this is unfair to his unique production style, which arguably has always had more in common with techno than many of his contemporaries - developing on a course outside of either genre over the past four years, culminating in the release of Little Things Like That on Clone's Basement Series last November. On listening to Change In A Dynamic Environment EP 1, it's clear that Little Things Like That was something of a transitional record, though perhaps not quite in the way that many expected. While both its tracks hammered forward with all the power of a horse bolting from the Fachwerk stable, the vacuum-like bass throb which is Dunning's most distinct sonic trademark was always pulling in the opposite direction, largely justifying the tag of bass over techno, and it's in this manner that many expected him to continue, applying his tried and trusted sounds to more regular drum patterns. This approach on both tracks flips Dunning's usual formula on its head, largely removing the heavily bottom-ended element of his sound, resulting in something that isn't rude club tackle but altogether more contemplative. Whether this is end of the Untold we knew him will no doubt be revealed with EPs 2 and 3.

Review: ** Repress from the Livity Sound dons **The Bristol based Livity Sound imprint, run by Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu, is fast becoming a buy on sight label thanks to releases which seem to pay no attention to genre or fads, swerving between raw house, experimental dubstep and swung techno from record to record. This time round it's Kowton's turn to step up, and on the A-Side absolutely rips it up with the track's turn of the century grime strings and savage claps which sound like a more brooding version of Helix's recent drop on Night Slugs. On the flip he strips it right back with a thumping percussive creeper which makes impressive use of the most sparing of elements which would no doubt be best served in the darkest of basements. Awe inspiring stuff.

Luv Zombie
Review: Hessle Audio continued their excellent form this year and introduced us to the new talents of Bandshell along with dropping that too-good-to-be-played, Objekt 12". Their long-time favourite, Elgato returned to Hessle Road with this stunning 2-tracker and its opener, "Zone" is a pleasingly odd bass rhythm, placing its deranged vocal firmly on top of the detached percussion elements swaying alongside the shimmering injections of lower frequencies. On the flip we have "Luv Zombie", another gorgeously far-out experimentation by our man Elgato, where his fast-paced drum shuffles meet distant waves of harmonics. This comes with a highly recommended stamp as per usual!

Never Liked Dancing
Track Mute
Review: With the dust barely settled from his last grime-infused monster on Livity Sound, Bristol's Kowton returns on the city's premier label at the bass/house/techno intersection, Idle Hands. "Never Liked Dancing" is classic Kowton - raw, stripped back drum machine rhythms, sprung bass, all twisted into unique shapes that hint at sinister figures lurking in the shadows. "Track Mute" meanwhile takes that simmering energy and turns the heat right up, as rapid stabs, laser FX and a churning low end intermingle in a sweaty Stokes Croft basement vibe. As with any Kowton release, this is essential.

Review: There was a growing sense that Night Slugs were in the early stages of reclaiming their reputation for prolific and wholly incendiary dancefloor material this year, returning to the sort of dominance that characterised their first year as a label. The launch of a Club Construction series adds another branch to an empire that already concurrently puts out full EPs, White Labels and artist albums, and also marks the first substantial material on the label from L-Vis 1990 in some time. The Night Slugs co-founder has been busy with Neon Dreams, his debut major label album and it's possible to frame this five track analogue only EP as a riposte from Connolly to those who had doubted his abilities for rawness given the polished nature of that opus. From the opening bars of "Workout" it's clear that the label's warning of this EP being "strictly for peak time usage" is all too prescient, leaning on an oft stated love of classic hi tempo Chitown ghetto house from the likes of Dance Mania and executing it with aplomb.

Eternally Yrs
Hold On (Trevino remix)
Don't Cry
The One (Kevin McPhee remnix)
Review: Presumably signing off on their excellent debut album from last year, this EP comprises two Sepalcure originals - the juke gone broken-beat of "Eternally Yrs" and the previously unreleased "Don't Cry", a tense standoff between hyperactive 808 and more flowing, soulful waves of vocal and drifting synth delay. As with any Hotflush release, the remixers are exceptionally well chosen - Marcus Intalex in his Trevino guise transforms "Hold On", pulling the original's looser elements together with a taut rhythmic focus, but the big remix is from Canadian wunderkind Kevin McPhee. His take on album standout track "The One" sets the delicate stabs into the background, turning it into a rolling drum-led behemoth which is neither house nor techno, but somewhere pleasantly in between.

Capracara - "House Of Dolls"
Palace - "Mandy"
5kinandbone5 - "Make U Understand"
Dubbel Dutch - "B Leave"
Review: It's almost impossible to keep on top of the Unknown To The Unknown release schedule, such is their relentless energy in putting out material across all formats. This UTTU Rec In Effekt! 12" has probably been our most anticipated release from DJ Haus' label though, granting a physical release to a quartet of Trans-Atlantic heaters that have appeared in the digital domain over the course of the last twelve months. It's an all-UK show on the A Side, commencing with the killer "House Of Dolls" from Capracara which fully demonstrates his masterful command of funked out house grooves. A perfectly bumped beat offsets an organ stab drenched in cavernous delay, whilst digital squalls flit around the nether regions. Alongside this, Palace is on a throwback midnite 2-step flex with "Mandy" sounding every bit like the one track Four Tet should have slipped into his Fabric mix. Flipside and West Coast duo 5kinandbone5 mangle up R&B and darkside garage with aplomb on "Make U Understand" whilst the excellent Dubbel Dutch takes the rhythmic template of drum & bass and fuses it with a modern bass mainframe, taking its R&B sample and combining it with icy synth stabs which create a sound much like a Detroit take on bass.

Wildfire (album version)
Wildfire (instrumental)
Wildfire (Ovo remix feat Drake)
Review: This Young Turks US import 12" followed on from the whirlwind SBTRKT Stateside tour that took in SXSW among other things, and allowed his followers another chance to bask in the full glory of "Wildfire." An unquestionable highlight of SBTRKT's debut album from last year, the track is dominated by those piercing yet fragile vocals from Little Dragon front woman Yukimi Nagano. It's also one of those tracks that always get the more inquisitive ears sidling up to the DJ booth to make polite track ID enquiries, something which will only increase if you drop the Ovo remix that staples on a verse from Drippy Drake for good measure - this being the first time the remix has appeared on a format more tangible than low bitrate mp3.

Intuit
Feed The Pigs
Whiskey
Review: Coming on like boogie for the apocalypse, Anstam isn't pulling any punches on this new EP on 50 Weapons. There's a definite funk to the industrial beat and hooky lead synth that propels "Intuit". It just so happens that it's placed in the hands of a madman who sets the pitch off on tangents while flinging borderline disharmonious diversions into the mix as well. "Feed The Pigs" is no less easy on your senses, with a rapidly disassembling beat and erratic synth washes. "Whiskey" makes sounds like it was maybe an attempt to make a sweet-natured track. Instead the brilliant horror of Anstam's musical vision gets woven into the core, much to our delight.
