Street Halo
NYC
Stolen Dog
Review: Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

Instra:Mental - "Pyramid"
Trevino - "Chip"
Review: On this 12", Martyn's 3024 imprint delivers its first split single, containing two tracks apparently too good to wait for individual releases. On the A-Side Instra:mental deliver "Pyramid", a typically throbbing number from the duo that sounds more like a meeting of the pair's respective solo monikers as Boddika and Jon Convex, with the deep bass oscillations of the former melded with the weirdness of the latter to create a furiously paced techno roller. On the B-Side Trevino delivers "Chip", which combines a glitchy garage rhythm with a dark EBM bass arpeggio and sinister chords to recreate the warehouse sound of Sheffield circa 1990 by way of a chiptune rave.

Last Forever
Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

Convexations
Falling Again
Review: Considering the rich vein of form Al Bleek has enjoyed as Boddika of late, Martyn's 3024 seems the perfect launch pad for Jon Convex - the solo endeavour of Bleek's Instra:mental cohort Damon Kirkham. Convexations is purportedly the first of a raft of releases across a number of labels for the Convex moniker and you can commence finger licking now, as the two productions here are perfect breakout material. The title track sets the tone, commencing in dramatic fashion before quickly settling into menacing Detroit electro pulse of rattling percussion, sputtering chords dipped with intensity and uneasy vocal flourishes. Complementing this is "Falling Down" with tight percussive rhythms, drowned out warm vocal swirls and rich sounding bass patterns - the end result being much more than the sum of its parts, especially when the array of thick chord washes join the party!

Faithless
Acid Lie
Review: Not to be outdone by fellow Magnetic Man cohort Skream arising on the Non Plus imprint, the imperious Benga conjures up two hot steppahs for Kapsize. Perhaps a playful retort to all those "stadium step" slights aimed at the Croydon triumvate, "Faithless" marries a jagged guitar riff to an abrasive 4/4 beat whilst the bass heavy lower end gives proceedings the requisite swing. For us it is all about the "Where were you in 96?" hardcore dynamism of the B Side "Acid Lies", where a spacious industrial beat is attacked from all sides by the most devious of acid lines. Subtle klaxon pitching and ruff neck attitude patrol the nether regions with aplomb.

Shadower
Sanctum
Review: Throwing Snow's latest effort heralds the start of the Sneaker Social Club imprint. Whispering to life on an ectoplasmic synth line, "Shadower" continues the producer's penchant for ghostly ambience, while the beats are positively direct and simple. The gently building melodies blossom into soaring chimes with the pastoral quality of early Four Tet. On the flip, "Sanctum" takes just as long to reveal its true colours, letting the melancholic vocal interplay ride out before an Irish-jig kind of cello signals the drop. Driven by a fulsome bass line and a lean 2-step shuffle, this could certainly get some rumps shaking in the right setting.

Natalia's Song
Review: Zomby remains such a singular and interesting figure within the music industry that the mooted legal kerfuffle surrounding "Natalia's Song" led James Holden to recently remark (via Twitter) with more than a degree of humour that it was perhaps the first instance of a European intellectual stealing from a Russian. This one sided ten inch comes ahead of the producer's keenly anticipated new album for the 4AD imprint, sampling and stuttering Russian Star Factory singer Irina Dubtzova and wrapping her voice around skeletal programming and heart melting melodies. Housed in deluxe packaging and first heard closing out Mary Anne Hobbes' tenure on Radio One, it's a little slice of niceness this.

A Devil Lay Here
Basquiat
Review: Ahead of a highly anticipated album on 4AD, the endlessly enigmatic Zomby serves up this intriguing 7" serving as a teaser alongside the already well loved "Natalia's Song", which also dropped this week). The subtle melodic shuffle of "A Devil Lay Here" is an instant highlight, with glassy textures and bleeps held together in the most fragile, beautiful manner. The smoky piano of "Basquiat" on the flip makes this a damn near irresistible release - can the album hurry up and arrive please?

Speeding Blue

The Lick
Be Myself
Review: Cementing their rep as the busiest cats in electronic music, Modeselektor maintain the 50 Weapons pressure with a quartet of drops from Dark Sky. There have been waves of expectation surrounding the London based trio since they surfaced on the excellent Pictures Music label last year, and the Radius EP shows they can match the hype with aplomb. "Speeding Blue" is vintage 50 Weapons material, devious chords progressing at 45 degrees around expertly layered drum kicks, dropping into heavenly washes at all the right moments. Staying true to its title "Neon" essentially works as a battle of wits between luminescent melodics and a tightly wound marriage of keys, shuffling hi-hats and insistent bass dips whilst fractured shards of vocals add a yearning quality. On the flip "The Lick" continues this interplay between dark and light elements with basement level sub bass contrasting with the glacial vocal coos that flicker beneath a tinned can of tropical fruit 808 flex - that bassline! "Be Myself" rounds off proceedings with what is best described as The Neptunes arising on Swamp81. Pure class.

Radar
Vacuum States
Review: Having announced his new Jon Convex endeavour with two slices of formidable futurism for Martyn's 3024 imprint, Damon Kirkham returns to the familiarity of Non Plus with a double clutch of equally essential productions. Fans of cult TV might recognise the snatch of Badalamenti strings that announce "Radar" in such ominous fashion, though it's they way this element is weaved amidst ever groaning insect like bass and murderous strains of dystopian acid that truly impresses. And of course the brittle click clack of drums that always threatens to smash to pieces. In contrast, "Vacuum States" offers a more optimistic slant on the sci fi electro poise, gradually letting loose a succession of kaleidoscopic synth flutters over the stripped down kick thrust and glooping bass.
