  1. Saints (feat Cazeaux OSLO) (6:36)
  2. Nothing Better (5:32)
  3. You Shall Know The Truth (6:32)
  4. Walken (7:06)
Review: Melbourne-based DJ and producer Prequel returns to the Rhythm Section fold for a second release after getting his debut with the much-loved Polite Strangers 12" back in late 2014. After a few appearances here and there in the interim period, this Freedom Jazz Dance 12" suggests Prequel has really expanded his production parameters with four tracks that add spoken word samples and subtle vocal lines to his stellar instrumental flourishes. Local Melbourne beat poet Cazeaux O.S.L.O. brings his distinct vocal tones and inspirations to lead track "Saints", a fine blunted opener that nods to KDJ classic "Amerika". You can see this one being played for months to come! Following this, Prequel throws down some effervescent jazz house on "Nothing Better" and "Walken" with a deviation into more beatdown territory, "You Shall Know The Truth", wedged inbetween.

  1. Love Vibe (5:07)
  2. Give It Up (6:05)
Review: The Kat Edits label have scored a real coup here, licensing a pair of tweaks the legend Domu originally committed to a super-rare Japan only CD compilation for the ESP DJ Classics series back in 2009. Domu's always been a classy producer no matter what he turns his hands to and this pair of edits really do deserve to be preserved on the vinyl format - kudos to Kat! Up top, "Love Vibes" by The Emotions is given a slightly upwards pitch adjustment by Domu, with plenty of skilled filtering to boot, whilst the B-side sees Claudia Barry's classic 1978 jammer "Give it Up" is embellished with some extra raunch sauce.

On Our Way Home (limited hand-numbered 1-sided vinyl 12")
Cat: EGLO 52. Rel: 29 Aug 16
  1. On Our Way Home (feat Fatima & Jimetta Rose) (5:41)
Review: Experienced producer Shafiq Husayn first appeared on Eglo back in 2014, delivering a fine EP of hip-hop framed modern soul, with the assistance of a battery of collaborators. Two years on he returns to Alex Nut and Floating Points label, with Eglo regulars Fatima and Jimetta Rose lending a hand. It sounds like Husayn has been listening to Floating Points, because "On Our Way Home" is a sumptuous, string-drenched affair, with orchestral parts rising and falling over a skittish electronic rhythm. The focal point, of course, is Fatima and Rose's harmonious lead vocal, which is as sweet, evocative and addictive as you'd expect. It may only be a single-sided release, but it's one killer cut.

Review: Byron The Aquarius resurfaced earlier this year after a nine-year absence, delivering the future jazz/deep house fusion of High Life on Sound Signature. This speedy follow-up on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats label is, if anything, even better. Warm, rich, soulful and evocative, it includes six superb cuts. These variously touch on off-kilter modern soul ("Co$mic $hit"), Herbie Hancock-influenced deep house (the jazz-funk synths, woozy chords and smooth beats of "Moments In Life"), intergalactic hip-hop beats (the impeccable "Space N Time"), blissfully Balearic house (the hazy positivity of "The Sun"), and jazz-influenced house rollers ("Better Tomorrow").

Review: Ninja Tune know how to come up with the goods for RSD, and they've truly hit the nail on head with this epic two-tracker from legendary French jazz bassist Henri Sexier, reimagined by the mind of Bonobo. The original cut of "Les La-Bas", which resides on the B-side, is a wonderfully loose blend of raw guitar strings and violin cello strings held together by a delicious beat jingle; the Bonobo remix manages to carry that musical power onto an effective house swing that ends up somewhere in the region of a Larry Levan classic. Don't miss it!

  1. Kuiper (17:45)
  2. For Marmish (part 2) (14:04)
Review: Having co-founded the now mythical Eglo Records, Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has, more recently, begun to release his music through his own Pluto label, an imprint with a clear vision from the music to the artwork. Moreover, the label also gives Shepherd room to explore outside of his more traditional housey framework, and the majority of the releases on Pluto have consisted of wild and diverse shreds of broken beat and nu jazz. "Kuiper" is his latest excursion and it's a psychedelic journey through high-powered percussion and airy synth experimentations all wrapped up in a suave jazz coating. "For Mamish (part 2)" is something altogether sparser and less concrete, but there is still plenty of movement amid Shepherd's crystal sounds and Balearic riffs in what sounds like the perfect new age sort of amalgamation. Excellent.

Review: Emotional Rescue starts 2016 digging deep in to the early 80s Bristol post punk scene of Pig Pag, the Wild Bunch and the Dug Out club. A short lived project of just 3 releases, Mouth trail-blazed leftfield percussive jams in the rich vain of Liquid Liquid and ESG but in their own jazz-infused way. Centered round the cultural melting post of the St Paul's district, it's pubs, clubs and blues parties threw together young and old to the sounds of dub, funk, jazz and soul and took the spark lit by punk rock and new wave and spawned music that still resonates today. Here then, on one EP are their complete recordings, including as the title cut, their best and deepest, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Featured on a compilation LP from the legendary Y Records, its bottom heavy dub sound is augmented by female and toasted vocals riding a top a heavy stepper style riddim. This is followed by an increasingly dizzy array of percussion jams. Acab (Part 2) is all skips and trumpets, while the versions of Take Your Coat Off perfect skat vocal / tom interplay, before the finale busts out the rockabilly influences in full effect with jagged guitar, skipping hats meets double bass punk style.

Review: Those in the soul scene should be familiar with Soul Survivors magazine, a well-produced freebie edited by DJ, journalist and record collector Fitzroy Anthony Facey. As part of the magazine's forthcoming tenth anniversary celebrations, Expansions Records has invited Facey to gather together some of his "dance, disco, boogie, jazz and fusion" favourites. There's plenty to enjoy, not least a swathe of organic, disco-flecked soulful house cuts featuring the unmistakable vocals of boogie legend Leroy Burgess. Highlights come thick and fast, and include Yam Who's deliciously loose and hazy remix of Incognito's "Show Me Love", the hard disco-funk thrills of Beggar & Co's cover of Kool & The Gang's "Open Sesame", and the sultry dancefloor brilliance of Soul People's "Our Time Is Coming".

Review: Since last year, this is Fred P's fourth album and while this would seem like recycled news for any other artist, we're always eager to hear more material from the NY house specialist. That's because all of Fred P's work has both a meaning and a direction, often centred on deep space or a general reinterpretation of black jazz music for the next millennium. Also, this Sound Destination LP comes on his own Soul People Music, and it is much more of a classic album rather than an associated collection of dance-friendly material. From "Leaving You Behind", through to "Longing For You", and all the way to "Boundless", the artist paints a full and vivid picture of his vision of electronic music, a dense and spectral future jazz that spirals naturally into something darker and more cerebral. Highly recommended material, as usual.

Review: There's something wonderfully hazy and fluid about this debut album from German producer Hodini. Built around a combination of unapologetically blazed instrumental hip-hop, Moodymann influences, and the sort tumbling, swinging, sample heavy deep house promoted by Andres, Seven Davis Jr and others, M$03 sound tailor made for humid, lazy summer afternoons. There are collaborations with Glenn Astro and Max Graef, amongst others, and an overriding sense that Hodini is a producer on the rise. Grab a beer, slouch against the nearest tree, light up a jazz cigarette and get lost in the groove.

  1. Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)

Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

Review: There's no doubt that Berliner's Max Graef and Glenn Astro are some of the biggest success stories to emerge from the deep house sound and creating their own signature style that's often copied of late, but seldom ever matched! Sure, the dusty hip-hop inspired jams are no doubt indebted to Detroit legends such as Theo Parrish or Andres but they've certainly put their own slant on it and created a new sound for the German capital to be synonymous with. Testament to their success is this LP for the legendary Ninja Tune; The Yard Work Simulator. Nearly a dozen tracks of chilled, sampledelic, MPC driven dope jams that are the perfect soundtrack for a misspent youth in Berlin this Summer. In particular check the raggedy junkyard joint that is "Where Fuck Are My Hard Boiled Eggs" or the psychedelic urban soul jam that is the title track.

Review: Panorama Bar resident and Ostgut Ton mainstay Virginia is back with a full length. Whether she's lending her fine vocal talents to home girl Steffi (who co-produced the album with fellow Dutch legends Dexter and Martyn) like she did on her Power of Anonymity album a couple of years ago (like on the fabulous "Yours") or getting behind the console herself to pump out some sweet grooves; she sure is versatile. Fierce For The Night is a fitting title, the dozen or so tracks on here are the perfect soundtrack to a long evening and morning experiencing her acclaimed residency and all inspired by the classic and timeless sounds of Chicago via NYC. Highlights include the sexy dancefloor drama of the mighty opener "Bally Linny", the Chaka Chan inspired boogie playground that is "Obstacle" or the emotional and bittersweet slow-mo pop of "Believe In Time" . Not to mention the high octane dancefloor bomb that is "Raverd"

Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

Review: It's been almost five years since Four Tet's last LP. However, you could never accuse Kieran Hebden of being lazy, having spent the years since 2005's Everything Ecstatic working on a number of EPs, collaborations and mixes, not to mention enough remixes to keep any student going throughout their perpetual revision period.

His fifth studio album to date forms a combination of minimal dance and amalgamations of sounds and ideas from his career so far. It serves a timely reminder of the joy of genre mashing in what is one of the first important releases of the new decade.

After the delicate and disjointed vocal-led opener 'Angel Echoes' we move into what will be Four Tet's next single, the hypnotic nine minute colossal, 'Love Cry.' Jazz percussion is layered over a sprawling house sentiment that builds exponentially throughout the saga. The aptly named 'Circling' uses hazy synthesizers to progresses from a soft, folk-like beginning to flamboyant end before we are treated to the fantastically warped female vocal that gives the defining factor on 'Sing.' Following 'Plastic People's' clap-infused melodic wandering, we reach 'She Just Likes To Fight' which seems to capture the emotional undertones that lay covered throughout the whole LP in a heart-warming sense of utter contentment.

It seems the long wait for an LP was more than worth it as Four Tet delivers guides through a labyrinth of musical tastes and genres whilst never losing his way in experimentation or self indulgence. Pushing limits, but in an ear-pleasing way, 'There Is Love In You' is yet another reason to jump aboard Four Tet.

Review: As well as being an incredible album title, Girl & Robot With Flowers was a true delight as a stand-alone long player with reprises, narratives and twists throughout. Taking the tunes out of context for a remix EP may have proved challenging, but Jazzman have enlisted the right skills to create four enticing pieces of floor-ready burnage. We kick off with a Greg Foat original (the Latin-licked "Part V") before dropping into jazzy, echo-chamber deep house from Linkwood, breezy subaquatic lounge from Vakula, smoky trumpet croons from Francis Dosoo and sleazy, woozy space travelling big beat. An accomplished remix collection.

Review: The Greg Foat Group are arguably one of Britain's most potent jazz combos of recent times - a fact that no doubt helped them secure a residency at the Playboy Club in Mayfair, London. Those who've seen them live will confirm their quality; while their recorded output is very good, in pales in comparison to their performances. It's good to see, then, that they've finally got round to recording a live album. Recorded straight to tape over two nights earlier in the year, Live at The Playboy Club sees them fusing soundtrack-influenced jazz grooves with modal wig-outs in front of a rapturous audience. As live albums go, it's particularly atmospheric. More importantly, it's arguably their strongest set to date.

Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

Review: For the second instalment of the ongoing Sonzeria project, Gilles Peterson and pals have "reimagined" one of the Worldwide radio show host's favourite Brazilian albums - Jose Prates' ludicrously hard-to-find 1958 cast recording of touring cultural show Tam Tam Tam. The original album is considered to be one of the most important artefacts in the story of modern Brazilian music. On this re-imagining, Peterson and collaborators Will Horrocks (LV) and Rob Gallagher (2 Banks of Four) have taken key phrases and snippets, and used them as starting points for new compositions. Drawing heavily on samba, bossa-nova and Latin jazz, as well as dub and contemporary electronics, it's a set that skillfully tiptoes the fine line between paying due reverence to Prates' album, and using it as an inspiration for fine new works.

Review: There's something admirably epic and far-sighted about Soundway's Ten Cities compilation, which draws together producers from five European Cities (Berlin, Bristol, Lisbon, Kiev and Naples) with instrumentalists, producers, rappers and vocalists from five African cities (Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, Luanda and Nairobi). With more than 50 artists involved across the 17 tracks, it takes a little time to sink in. It is, though, worth the effort, as this is global fusion and electronic cross-pollination on a colossal scale. From deep house-Afrobeat hybrids and techno-afro jazz-fusion, via kuduro, kwaito and hard-to-pigeonhole global hip-hop, Ten Cities is an eclectic, open-minded and groundbreaking delight.

Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Review: Seven years since the last Smith & Mudd album kissed our ears... Gorthlek is a long-awaited treat that's landed (by no coincidence we suspect) right at the start of prime sandy season. Picking up where they left us (together and as part of the Bison collective), it's every bit as soul soothing, soft-focus and poised as you'd expect. It's the weight and richness that will grab most fans the hardest; amid the floral pastoral instrumentation on tracks such as "Alrick" and "Gorthlek Part 1", there's real swampy bluesy fusion such as "Mr Coats", there's fiddle-flipping cosmic folk on "Enos" and naked piano striking drama on the closure "Gorthlek Part 2". Instrumental Balearic bliss.

Review: 2015 is fast turning into Henry Wu's year. Having already delivered killer 12s of baked deep house/instrumental hip-hop fusion for Ho-Tep and Odd Socks, he now pops up on Rhythm Section International with another brilliant EP. While as deep and blazed as previous excursions, there's a sun-bright freshness to the pleasingly varied selections on offer. Contrast, for example, the deep space, boogie-house slickness of "Yellow Brick", the bruk revivalism of "Neezy (Wok)" - think I.G Culture after a few too many bongs) - and the brilliant deep house/jazz-funk fusion of "Dubplate Special". Arguably best of all, though, is the Latin jazz-goes-deep house warmth of "Croydon Depot". Everyone will have a different personal favourite, though; it's that kind of EP.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

His haziest, softest and most consistent set so far, his falsetto dulcets wrap around a whirlwind of styles that are tailor made for vinyl. Sloping and sliding into each other all the way, from the slippery wah-wah guitar disco of "Them Changes" to the Plantlife-style funk of "Lone Wolf & Club" to the trippy ambience of "That Moment", we're gradually moved slowly, softly and sweetly throughout.

Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Review: Some five years after it was released digitally, Aybee's Deepblak label revisit the wonderful Afrikan Sciences LP Means &Ways to grant it a double LP vinyl edition. For those unfamiliar with the album, the 11-track set showed Eric Porter refusing to stand still, variously touching on polyrhythmic IDM, dusty jazz-hop, dense post-techno wonkiness, hard-to-pigeonhole madness (see "Alpha Male Syndrum"), sparkling aural experiments ("Ways & Means"), and pleasingly off-kilter dancefloor fare. Amongst this category you'll find deliberately out-of-time deepness, slipped broken beat, and dense drum workouts ("NanoRock Skank"). As usual, Porter's tunes are bizarre but brilliant.

Review: Esteemed deep house producers Glen Astro and Max Graef have much in common musically, not least a shared love of crusty chords, fuzzy textures and dusty, soul-flecked samples. It's good to see the pair joining forces, not only in the studio, but also to launch the Money Sex label. This first collaborative EP (for both artists and label) is packed full of warm-but-distorted, immersive deep house, with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure. That's certainly how we'd describe the eccentric "Caribbean Screwdriver" (all loose, densely layered percussion, distant vocal samples and tactile electric pianos) and "Echoed Gehema", a tipsy chunk of enveloping deep house built around a shuffling but locked-in MPC style groove.
