Review: On the cover of his first album for a decade, saxophonist Kamasi Washington stares intently out, the universe stretching out to infinity behind him. You see, Washington is something of a Sun Ra acolyte, and there's something of the great man's spiritual, psychedelic and far-sighted feel about The Epic. Rooted in a loose, soulful and occasionally riotous blend of spiritual jazz, it more than lives up to its' name, stretching across three themed CDs. While Washington's tenor sax offers a focal point throughout, it's merely part of a greater ensemble effort - Sun Ra Arkestra style - that helps The Epic fly by in a flurry of loose-limbed drums, rubbery double bass, hammered-out pianos and intoxicating vocals.

Review: Given that this is the first album from the great Theo Parrish since 2007, it's unsurprising interest in American Intelligence has rocketed over the course of the year as Sound Signature left a trail of hints. Happily, American Intelligence is a fine album; deep and woozy in parts, undeniably soulful, shot through with jazz influences and full to bursting with killer cuts. By now, everyone should know the brilliant "Footwork" single (arguably one of the records of 2014); soon, clubs will swing to the off-kilter dancefloor jazz of "Make No War", the 21st century broken house of the epic "Fallen Funk" and the decidedly odd - but brilliant - "Helmut Lampshade".

Review: K7's Tape series has already seen the indie royalty likes of Foals, The Rapture and The Big Pink compile mixtapes of mix their favourite tunes. That considered they've still outdone themselves by securing Bloc Party's frontman Kele Okereke for this time round. The thirteen track mix shows surprising range from Okereke, with garage standards such as "RIP Groove" and the Wookie classic "Battle" rubbing up against party grime from Wiley and more 4/4 fare from Larry Heard, Cajmere (in Jamie Jones remix form) and Carl Craig's award winning Junior Boys remix. A pleasant curveball appears in the form of the Samoyed remix of Vagghe Stalle.

Review: Bristol musician Pete Josef is probably best known for his role in The White Lamp, a collaboration with former Underworld man Darren Emerson that proved quite popular several years ago. Indeed, it was Sonar Kollektiv's licensing of The White Lamp track "Make It Good" that proved the genesis of Josef working with the German label which now results in his debut album Colours. Some 11 tracks deep, Colours features a real blend of styles with Josef's wonderfully warm vocals the one element that binds them all together. Brushed with jazz, soul, broken beat, and more, there is a clear sense of melancholy and nostalgia to much of Colours, with Josef impressively responsible for all elements of production and recording! A real gem from the SK crew

Review: Given the quality of his eponymous 2014 debut album, hopes are naturally high for Mo Kolours sophomore set, Texture Like Sun. Happily, the Peckham-based producer appears to have neatly sidestepped "difficult second album" syndrome, delivering another blazed, humid set that effortlessly blends off-kilter, MPC-programmed beats and dusty soul, jazz and reggae samples with the tropical sounds and rhythms of the producer's Mauritian heritage. There's perhaps more of a dub-soul feel than the previous set, which only serves to emphasize the sticky, sun-drenched haziness of Mo Kolours' impeccable productions. It all adds up to another horizontally inclined amble through the One Handed Music man's unique aural world.

Review: Ukranian house mystic Mikhaylo Vityk returns with a suitably epic new Vakula LP, A Voyage To Arcturus, issued through his own Leleka label. Those with a more considered grasp of literary matters will no doubt recognise that Vityk has taken titular inspiration from A Voyage To Arcturus, the 1920 novel penned by Scottish writer David Lindsay with each of the sixteen tracks also named after chapters from the book too. By his own admission, this is more of an imaginary soundtrack than outright album, and as a result there is little here one could call deep house. Spending some time with it does however confirm what a singular talent the Ukrainian is!

Review: Amazingly, it's five years since the last volume of the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series, in which the London crate digger and turntablist gets to showcase the depth and diversity of his record collection. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections, from the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and steel band madness of Amral's Trinidad Cavalivers, to the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings". Mr Thing shows his immense turntable skills on disc one, chopping and looping breaks while keeping things moving, while the second disc features unmixed versions of his ludicrously obscure selections. In a word: essential.

Review: Pitched somewhere between the gritty, propulsive beats of Los Angeles, and the exploratory jazz of Cosmogramma, Flying Lotus's fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes is arguably the most delicate record he's ever produced. Described as a "collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies", it steers away from bigger moments, choosing instead to present an understated patchwork of breezy jazz samples, dusty hip-hop beats smeared vocals seemingly inspired by DMT hallucinations. While previous efforts were wildly futuristic at times, Until The Quiet Comes is confidently classicist - and seals Flying Lotus's position as one of our generation's visionary producers.

Review: Arriving with some truly mind bending artwork from controversial guro manga artist Shintaro Kago, the new Flying Lotus album You're Dead! Is quite alot to take in upon first listen. Some nineteen tracks deep, Steven Ellison uses all the available space to draw you deep into the afterlife as he sees it, veering through heavily psychedelic jazz passages and next level beat explorations that demand you pay full attention. The iconic Herbie Hancock leads a high profile cast of contributing artists to Fly Lo's fifth studio LP and his most ambitious to date with Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa also adding to what is a transcendental listening experience.

Review: Black Sands, the eagerly anticipated fourth album from Simon Green AKA Bonobo, is no revolutionary change from his signature sound but does come with perhaps even more subtlety and complexity than his previous offerings. Having constantly instilled a degree of integrity and value back into chill out music following the influx of Cafe Del Mar and Coffeeshop compilations, Green once again displays a musicianship that sets him apart as a true artist and producer amongst a sea of downtempo and chillout DJs.
His undeniably clear understanding of composition and arrangement of live instruments has enabled Green to make an album that reaches out through diverse styles, taking influence and inspiration from wherever possible. On Black Sands, Green delves into electronic music and bass more than he did across Animal Magic, Dial "M" For Monkey or Days To Come but does so with enough subtlety and finesse to refrain from causing a radical shift in his product. Tracks like "Kiara," "We Could Forever" and "All In Forms" all utilise beats and bass in a more contemporary outlook than we are used to with Bonobo. Of course the instrumental feel is still there for all to see. Title track "Black Sands" takes this position for almost seven minutes of a horn infused waltz whereas "Kong" assumes the traditional soul-jazz Bonobo take and "Animals" lets delicate drum patterns guide us through pleasing tempo shifts.
The instrumental vibe is highlighted further in the album's approach to vocals. Unlike his last album, Days To Come which was littered with vocals, Black Sands houses only three tracks that contain vocals. The breathy vocals of Andreya Triana complete tracks like "Stay the Same" and "The Keeper" turning them in more traditional songs. Black Sands is another loving crafted offering that uses orchestral arrangements but this time merged with more of a dance aesthetic. As he continues to make chillout more credible in his experimental way, it's no wonder that Bonobo is one of the biggest artists to come from the excellent Ninja Tune.

Review: Ninja Tune's relentless release schedule continues apace here with the much anticipated debut album from Romare. Under the name, London producer Archie Fairhurst first made waves with a couple of excellent 12" releases for the Black Acre label which revealed a quite distinct approach to production. Inspired by the collages of noted US artist Romare Bearden, Fairhurst's fascination with African-American culture is explored through his productions which deftly weaved in untold amounts of samples in an illuminating fashion. How Romare applies this approach to the album format is one of the most compelling thoughts you will have when listening to Projections. The resultant 11 tracks suggest Fairhurst has achieved it with aplomb.

Review: It would be fair to called Joined Ends, Oliver Thomas Johnson's second album under his familiar Dorian Concept alias, "long-promised". It was being touted for release back in 2011, soon after he signed with Ninja Tune. Interestingly, it's a very different beast to his 2009 debut album, When Planets Explode, and the club-friendly singles that followed. A veritable technicolour blast of warm chords, shimmering synthesizer melodies, dream-pop vocals and skittering low-end rhythms, Joined Ends ripples with unfussy positivity. It's far from a straightforward set - Johnson is too imaginative a producer for that - but it certainly has a singular vision. It may not be the album we were expecting, but it's an impressive set nonetheless.

Review: After a busy year that saw releases on Funkineven's Apron and Classic, Seven Davis Jr returns to London's Ninja Tune with a new LP, his second to date and a follow-up to this year's Wild Hearts EP for the same label. Universes is a stunning body of music comprised of fifteen tracks, all of which showcase Seven's many different styles and abilities behind the mixing desk...after all, it is called Universes! Our favourite moments have to be "Everybody Too Cool" because it reminds us of Outkast at their most daring, the off-kilter beats of "Karma", "Options" and its pseudo techno stance, and the abstract soul wails of "Fighters". Check it, there's plenty of goodness inside.

Review: Melbourne-based Lance Ferguson takes time out from producing funk bank the Bamboos to lay down a second solo album under the Lanu moniker. "Her 12 Faces" is a curious choice of title, but neatly sums up the eclectic patchwork of beat-driven songs and instrumentals on display. While largely downtempo think vintage Aim after dosing himself up on Prozac Ferguson offers a few thrillingly uptempo excursions (most notably "Der Hotel Blume" and "1988"), as well as a slew of memorable songs featuring vocalist Megan Washington. She's probably at her beguiling best on string-laden torch song "Fall" a cut that wrestles with the dreamy steel guitar workout "The Coral Route" for the title of the album's stand-out track.

Regardless, this Tru Thoughts release is amazing.

Review: Afro/Latin/tropical fusionists The Souljazz Orchestra have long established themselves as one of the most incendiary live acts on the circuits, reinforcing this rising reputation with a string of fine albums. Here, they deliver their seventh full-length, adding notable French Caribbean and Francophone West African into their already distinctive musical melting pot. Predictably, the results are impressive, with the Ottawa-based sextet effortlessly flitting between humid, Afro-Cuban workouts ("Ware Wa"), Hammond-heavy dancefloor freak-outs ("Bull's Eye"), slick soul sing-alongs ("As The World Turns"), and highly politicized Afrobeat jams ("Greet The Dawn", "Shock & Awe"). As usual, it's all impeccably played and produced, resulting in another killer dose of cross-cultural dancefloor fusion.

Review: Will "Quantic" Holland is a seriously talented guy. The veteran producer seems to be able to turn his hand to almost any genre, often assembling an all-new band to fit the brief. That's what he's done here, gathering together a sextet of Los Angeles-based jazz musicians under the Western Transient guise. A New Constellation, then, indulges his love of jazz, and specifically the classic material that emerged from L.A throughout the '50s, '60s and '70s. As you might expect, the playing is impeccable, with the emphasis on warm, rich sounds - think lilting horns, yearning guitar solos, rich Rhodes chords and gentle rhythms framed by his now familiar influences (bossa-nova, samba, soul, and so on).

Review: Earlier in the autumn, Tru Thoughts announced the signing of Moonchild, a hotly tipped "neo-soul/jazz" trio from Los Angeles. Here, they deliver their first full length for the Brighton-based label, following two hard to find, self-released sets. Please Rewind is a decidedly rich, sumptuous and comforting affair, with Amber Navran's Jill Scott-like vocals providing a sweet, intoxicating focal point. These are frequently combined with hazy horns, twinkling electric piano lines, simmering strings and head-nodding, hip-hop soul beats. The result is a set of smoldering songs that recall the Halcyon days of neo-soul in the early 2000s.

Review: It's some eight years since electronic soul outfit Belleruche released their debut 7" on Hippoflex. Since then, they've become one of Tru Thoughts' most reliable acts, delivering a series of albums that join the dots between nu-jazz, funk, soul and wide-eyed downtempo beats. Here, Rob Luis' label celebrates their career to date, offering a warranted Best Of... that includes remastered versions of many of their greatest moments. Highligthts are plentiful, from the string-laden soul shuffle of "3 Amp Fuse" and jazz-flecked bump of "Minor Swing", to the lo-fi soul-rock of "Stormbird" and the downtempo beats of "16 Minutes".

Review: Four years on from the release of his superb debut album, Mirrorwriting, Jamie Woon returns with an arguably even better sophomore set. Whereas his first album looked towards dubstep and bass music for inspiration as much as his beloved soul, Making Time draws more heavily on neo-soul, hip-hop and R&B influences. It makes for a more classically slick and radio-friendly set, though there's enough depth to the production - not to mention inventive musical touches - to reward repeat listens. The album's best feature, though, is Woon's immaculately evocative voice, which drips with raw emotion through the set's ten-track duration.

Review: Like the best instalments in the long-running DJ Kicks series, this mix from Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow gives a far better insight into his musical inspirations than his own productions ever could. While there are, naturally, great deep house moments included (Tevo Howard, Mr Fingers, Latecomer etc), these largely take a back seat to Plessow's other musical passions. So, we get soft-focus electric jazz (Sun Ra), dub wise explorations (Tony Allen, Basic Channel), sweet soul (Peven Everett), dusty afro-funk (Geraldo Pino), urgent leftfield disco (Loose Joints, Walter Gibbons) and even a dash of instrumental jazz-funk (James Mason). That it all makes sense musically, flows brilliantly and is effortlessly entertaining is testament to Plessow's skill as a DJ.

Review: The Greg Foat Group are arguably one of Britain's most potent jazz combos of recent times - a fact that no doubt helped them secure a residency at the Playboy Club in Mayfair, London. Those who've seen them live will confirm their quality; while their recorded output is very good, in pales in comparison to their performances. It's good to see, then, that they've finally got round to recording a live album. Recorded straight to tape over two nights earlier in the year, Live at The Playboy Club sees them fusing soundtrack-influenced jazz grooves with modal wig-outs in front of a rapturous audience. As live albums go, it's particularly atmospheric. More importantly, it's arguably their strongest set to date.

Review: Since stepping out of the shadow of Massive Attack, Tricky has enjoyed a mixed career. While there have been undoubted highlights - and not just the acclaimed Maxiniqauye - his output has been hit and miss at best. False Idols, his first album since 2010's decidedly hit-and-miss Mixed Race, is thankfully more hit than mix. As paranoid, intoxicating and atmospheric as you'd expect, it mixes the fuzzy, rock-influenced darkness of recent years with glorious hints at his storied past (see the string-laden "Nothing's Changed" and horizontal trip-hop of "We Don't Die"). There are thrillingly macabre moments throughout, from the murky pulse of "Hey Love", to the sparse "Somebody's Sins".

Review: The Greg Foat Group likes to keep busy. Following hot on the heels of their fantastic Live at the Playboy Club, London set - a particularly potent recording of the jazz ensemble at their best - comes their first studio album since 2012. Like its predecessor, Girl & Robot With Flowers, Dancers at the Edge of Time is a suitably spiritual, out-there affair, with wild horn lines and fizzing rhythms supplemented by atmospheric strings and oodles of post-production effects. While there are plenty of impeccably beautiful downtempo numbers - see the near-perfect "Hygela" and the intricate piano work of "The Eye of the Horus" - it's the up-tempo workouts that make the biggest impression. "Riff For Raff" and "The Hunt", in particular, are brilliant.
