Review: Amazingly, it's five years since the last volume of the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series, in which the London crate digger and turntablist gets to showcase the depth and diversity of his record collection. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections, from the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and steel band madness of Amral's Trinidad Cavalivers, to the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings". Mr Thing shows his immense turntable skills on disc one, chopping and looping breaks while keeping things moving, while the second disc features unmixed versions of his ludicrously obscure selections. In a word: essential.

Review: Those in the soul scene should be familiar with Soul Survivors magazine, a well-produced freebie edited by DJ, journalist and record collector Fitzroy Anthony Facey. As part of the magazine's forthcoming tenth anniversary celebrations, Expansions Records has invited Facey to gather together some of his "dance, disco, boogie, jazz and fusion" favourites. There's plenty to enjoy, not least a swathe of organic, disco-flecked soulful house cuts featuring the unmistakable vocals of boogie legend Leroy Burgess. Highlights come thick and fast, and include Yam Who's deliciously loose and hazy remix of Incognito's "Show Me Love", the hard disco-funk thrills of Beggar & Co's cover of Kool & The Gang's "Open Sesame", and the sultry dancefloor brilliance of Soul People's "Our Time Is Coming".

Review: Black Sands, the eagerly anticipated fourth album from Simon Green AKA Bonobo, is no revolutionary change from his signature sound but does come with perhaps even more subtlety and complexity than his previous offerings. Having constantly instilled a degree of integrity and value back into chill out music following the influx of Cafe Del Mar and Coffeeshop compilations, Green once again displays a musicianship that sets him apart as a true artist and producer amongst a sea of downtempo and chillout DJs.
His undeniably clear understanding of composition and arrangement of live instruments has enabled Green to make an album that reaches out through diverse styles, taking influence and inspiration from wherever possible. On Black Sands, Green delves into electronic music and bass more than he did across Animal Magic, Dial "M" For Monkey or Days To Come but does so with enough subtlety and finesse to refrain from causing a radical shift in his product. Tracks like "Kiara," "We Could Forever" and "All In Forms" all utilise beats and bass in a more contemporary outlook than we are used to with Bonobo. Of course the instrumental feel is still there for all to see. Title track "Black Sands" takes this position for almost seven minutes of a horn infused waltz whereas "Kong" assumes the traditional soul-jazz Bonobo take and "Animals" lets delicate drum patterns guide us through pleasing tempo shifts.
The instrumental vibe is highlighted further in the album's approach to vocals. Unlike his last album, Days To Come which was littered with vocals, Black Sands houses only three tracks that contain vocals. The breathy vocals of Andreya Triana complete tracks like "Stay the Same" and "The Keeper" turning them in more traditional songs. Black Sands is another loving crafted offering that uses orchestral arrangements but this time merged with more of a dance aesthetic. As he continues to make chillout more credible in his experimental way, it's no wonder that Bonobo is one of the biggest artists to come from the excellent Ninja Tune.

Review: While he may now be best known for his dusty deep house excursions, Scott "Thatmanmonkz" Moncrief was once primarily known as a maker of off-kilter modern soul under the Small Arms Fiya alias. Interestingly, this debut album for Delusions of Grandeur smoothly combines both of these musical threads with other soulful and jazzy influences, resulting in a set of dancefloor soul that bristles with laidback authenticity. The Sheffield producer is clearly talented, and barely puts a foot wrong throughout Columbising. Whether paying tribute to George Benson style jazz-funk ("Boogie Down"), A Tribe Called Quest ("A Fly New Tune"), disco ("Another Night Under The Glitterball"), and bumpin' jazz-house ("For Bae"), Moncrief always hits the spot.

Review: Afro/Latin/tropical fusionists The Souljazz Orchestra have long established themselves as one of the most incendiary live acts on the circuits, reinforcing this rising reputation with a string of fine albums. Here, they deliver their seventh full-length, adding notable French Caribbean and Francophone West African into their already distinctive musical melting pot. Predictably, the results are impressive, with the Ottawa-based sextet effortlessly flitting between humid, Afro-Cuban workouts ("Ware Wa"), Hammond-heavy dancefloor freak-outs ("Bull's Eye"), slick soul sing-alongs ("As The World Turns"), and highly politicized Afrobeat jams ("Greet The Dawn", "Shock & Awe"). As usual, it's all impeccably played and produced, resulting in another killer dose of cross-cultural dancefloor fusion.

Review: Italian twosome Alessandro Trebo and Andrea Benini are virtual veterans, having released their debut album under the Mop Mop alias way back in 2005. Here, they deliver their first new studio set in three years, serving up a warm, rich and evocative set rooted in their usual blend of nu-jazz, reggae, hip-hop, Latin beats and hazy downtempo grooves. The expansive credits reveal just how many live session players were involved (think marimbas, glockenspiel, steel drums, kalimba, modular synthesizers, double bass and a variety of pianos), while beat poet Anthony Joseph adds his distinctive spoken word vocals to a number of tracks. The result is an enjoyable and entertaining set that offers a good balance between stoned, late night explorations and more densely layered compositions.

Review: Hot on the heels of his No Beginning No End album, Jose returns with yet another arresting tale of modern day soul. His distinctive baritone humming with raw emotion he covers a broad soundscape that includes contemporary off-beat fracturisms ("U R The 1"), dreamy psychedelia ("Were Sleeping"), heavy bluesy rock ("Anywhere U Go") and Bonobo-style string drama ("4 Noble Truths"). Far-reaching, arresting and delivered with real authenticity, Jose's repertoire is as spotless and creative as it was when Giles Peterson first signed him 10 years ago.

Review: It would be fair to say that Gregory Porter is a man on the rise. In the four years since he made his debut, the jazz singer-songwriter has become one of the most name-checked soul men on the planet. Take Me To The Alley, his first album for three years, sees him flexing his musical muscles more impressively than ever before. Much of the material sits somewhere between Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sammy Davis Jnr and Nat King Cole, with Porter's effortlessly evocative vocals accompanied by smooth jazz pianos, winding horns, shuffling drums and undulating double bass. This 'Deluxe Edition' comes bundled with a DVD containing a wealth of videos, alternate versions and, most interestingly, a 20-minute interview with Don Was.

Review: A decade has passed since Italian experimental jazz trio Chat Noir released their debut album, Adoration. Their sound has subtly shifted over the course of the four full-lengths they've released since, but their ability to craft evocative, emotion-rich music remains undimmed. Nine Thoughts For One Word, their sixth album, is a particularly atmospheric selection, and sees them blend their usual hushed jazz instrumentation with influences including Arab Strap, Spiritualized, The Cinematic Orchestra, trip-hop, folk-rock, and moonlit ambience. The most impressive aspect of the album is the way in which these varied inspirations are perfectly balanced, allowing the trio to be fuzzy and psychedelic on one hand, and delicate and finely crafted on the other.

Some nineteen tracks deep, Steven Ellison uses all the available space to draw you deep into the afterlife as he sees it, veering through heavily psychedelic jazz passages and next level beat explorations that demand you pay full attention. The iconic Herbie Hancock leads a high profile cast of contributing artists to Fly Lo's fifth studio LP and his most ambitious to date with Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa also adding to what is a transcendental listening experience.

Review: After a busy year that saw releases on Funkineven's Apron and Classic, Seven Davis Jr returns to London's Ninja Tune with a new LP, his second to date and a follow-up to this year's Wild Hearts EP for the same label. Universes is a stunning body of music comprised of fifteen tracks, all of which showcase Seven's many different styles and abilities behind the mixing desk...after all, it is called Universes! Our favourite moments have to be "Everybody Too Cool" because it reminds us of Outkast at their most daring, the off-kilter beats of "Karma", "Options" and its pseudo techno stance, and the abstract soul wails of "Fighters". Check it, there's plenty of goodness inside.

Review: It would be fair to called Joined Ends, Oliver Thomas Johnson's second album under his familiar Dorian Concept alias, "long-promised". It was being touted for release back in 2011, soon after he signed with Ninja Tune. Interestingly, it's a very different beast to his 2009 debut album, When Planets Explode, and the club-friendly singles that followed. A veritable technicolour blast of warm chords, shimmering synthesizer melodies, dream-pop vocals and skittering low-end rhythms, Joined Ends ripples with unfussy positivity. It's far from a straightforward set - Johnson is too imaginative a producer for that - but it certainly has a singular vision. It may not be the album we were expecting, but it's an impressive set nonetheless.

Review: There's no doubt that Berliner's Max Graef and Glenn Astro are some of the biggest success stories to emerge from the deep house sound and creating their own signature style that's often copied of late, but seldom ever matched! Sure, the dusty hip-hop inspired jams are no doubt indebted to Detroit legends such as Theo Parrish or Andres but they've certainly put their own slant on it and created a new sound for the German capital to be synonymous with. Testament to their success is this LP for the legendary Ninja Tune; The Yard Work Simulator. Nearly a dozen tracks of chilled, sampledelic, MPC driven dope jams that are the perfect soundtrack for a misspent youth in Berlin this Summer. In particular check the raggedy junkyard joint that is "Where Fuck Are My Hard Boiled Eggs" or the psychedelic urban soul jam that is the title track.

Review: Ninja Tune's relentless release schedule continues apace here with the much anticipated debut album from Romare. Under the name, London producer Archie Fairhurst first made waves with a couple of excellent 12" releases for the Black Acre label which revealed a quite distinct approach to production. Inspired by the collages of noted US artist Romare Bearden, Fairhurst's fascination with African-American culture is explored through his productions which deftly weaved in untold amounts of samples in an illuminating fashion. How Romare applies this approach to the album format is one of the most compelling thoughts you will have when listening to Projections. The resultant 11 tracks suggest Fairhurst has achieved it with aplomb.

Review: Four years on from the release of his superb debut album, Mirrorwriting, Jamie Woon returns with an arguably even better sophomore set. Whereas his first album looked towards dubstep and bass music for inspiration as much as his beloved soul, Making Time draws more heavily on neo-soul, hip-hop and R&B influences. It makes for a more classically slick and radio-friendly set, though there's enough depth to the production - not to mention inventive musical touches - to reward repeat listens. The album's best feature, though, is Woon's immaculately evocative voice, which drips with raw emotion through the set's ten-track duration.

Review: Like the best instalments in the long-running DJ Kicks series, this mix from Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow gives a far better insight into his musical inspirations than his own productions ever could. While there are, naturally, great deep house moments included (Tevo Howard, Mr Fingers, Latecomer etc), these largely take a back seat to Plessow's other musical passions. So, we get soft-focus electric jazz (Sun Ra), dub wise explorations (Tony Allen, Basic Channel), sweet soul (Peven Everett), dusty afro-funk (Geraldo Pino), urgent leftfield disco (Loose Joints, Walter Gibbons) and even a dash of instrumental jazz-funk (James Mason). That it all makes sense musically, flows brilliantly and is effortlessly entertaining is testament to Plessow's skill as a DJ.

Review: Melbourne-based Lance Ferguson takes time out from producing funk bank the Bamboos to lay down a second solo album under the Lanu moniker. "Her 12 Faces" is a curious choice of title, but neatly sums up the eclectic patchwork of beat-driven songs and instrumentals on display. While largely downtempo think vintage Aim after dosing himself up on Prozac Ferguson offers a few thrillingly uptempo excursions (most notably "Der Hotel Blume" and "1988"), as well as a slew of memorable songs featuring vocalist Megan Washington. She's probably at her beguiling best on string-laden torch song "Fall" a cut that wrestles with the dreamy steel guitar workout "The Coral Route" for the title of the album's stand-out track.

Review: It's some eight years since electronic soul outfit Belleruche released their debut 7" on Hippoflex. Since then, they've become one of Tru Thoughts' most reliable acts, delivering a series of albums that join the dots between nu-jazz, funk, soul and wide-eyed downtempo beats. Here, Rob Luis' label celebrates their career to date, offering a warranted Best Of... that includes remastered versions of many of their greatest moments. Highligthts are plentiful, from the string-laden soul shuffle of "3 Amp Fuse" and jazz-flecked bump of "Minor Swing", to the lo-fi soul-rock of "Stormbird" and the downtempo beats of "16 Minutes".

Review: K7's Tape series has already seen the indie royalty likes of Foals, The Rapture and The Big Pink compile mixtapes of mix their favourite tunes. That considered they've still outdone themselves by securing Bloc Party's frontman Kele Okereke for this time round. The thirteen track mix shows surprising range from Okereke, with garage standards such as "RIP Groove" and the Wookie classic "Battle" rubbing up against party grime from Wiley and more 4/4 fare from Larry Heard, Cajmere (in Jamie Jones remix form) and Carl Craig's award winning Junior Boys remix. A pleasant curveball appears in the form of the Samoyed remix of Vagghe Stalle.

Review: Everything about Birmingham-based singer/musician/producer Laura Mvula is striking; her appearance, voice, lyrics and adventurous musical approach all suggest a star in the making. This major label backed debut album, Sing To The Moon, is pretty special, too. It touches on a myriad of styles, from the Charles Stepney/Rotary Connection-ish gospeldelia of "Diamonds" and grandiose "Like The Morning Dew", to the twinkling soul-jazz of "That's Alright" (like Emile Sande, only 100 times better) and mournful strings of the beautiful "She". Throughout, Mvula's voice provides a constant reminder of her immense talents. Atmospheric, entertaining and immaculately produced, it's some debut.

Review: Since 2012, Soul Jazz's Sounds of the Universe offshoot - named, of course, after the imprint's London store - has delivered a string of inspired 12" singles featuring exclusive cuts from the likes of Andres (the brilliant, Latin-tinged house gem "Ribena"), Tevo Howard (the yearning, deep, instrumental synth-pop of "Summer Romance"), and Heatsick (the deliciously wonky "Snakes & Ladders"). Here, they gather together these inspired, previously vinyl-only moments on CD for the first time, alongside a second disc of never before heard cuts. This selection is, of course, every bit as good, and boasts stunning contributions from DJ Stingray (the fluid Detroit electro of "Cytokines"), Seven Davis Jnr, Ras G and Golden Teacher (the dubwise, off-kilter pulse of "Maladroit").

Review: Que sonzeira! This is Gilles Peterson's most ambitious project to date... Last year he shipped himself and various key creative producers to Rio to build a document that celebrates every quarter of Brazil's broad sound by way of 18 original productions. Working the likes of Floating Points, members of 2 Banks Of 4 and local maestro Kassin, they sourced some the country's most authentic, exciting imaginative performers to create unique compositions that transcend any idea of homage to become their own entities that speak a universal groove language. The other-worldly rain forest flute-wheezing mists of "The Plum Blossom", the star-gazing lullaby harmonies of "Estrelar", the weeping chord phrases and soft whispers "City Saints", the scruffy dubby loops and percussive insistency of "Where Nana Hides"...
