Review: Flying Lotus collaborator Thundercat returns to Brainfeeder with his first full album since 2013's superb Apocalypse. Presented over four coloured pieces of 10" vinyl, Drunk is a thrill-a-minute, mix-tape style trip through the multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker's various inspirations (think skewed hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, left-of-centre electronica, and so on), all of which have been fused and mutated to fit his unique musical perspective. His high standing within the leffield hip-hop community has allowed Thundercat to snag some impressive guest stars, too, including Kendrick Lamarr, blue-eyed soul legend Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Pharell and jazz man Kamasi Washington. Old pal Fly-Lo also lends a hand.

Review: Naples duo Whodamanny and Milord are anything but normal. Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Throw in unabashed bumpers like the acid tweaked "Momentum" and you've got the perfect soundtrack to an entire party from warm-up to sesh, club to beach.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

Review: First Word welcome an absolute musical legend to the fold: Kaidi Tatham has recorded and/or performed with some of the very best names in contemporary funk, soul and jazz from Amy Winehouse to Bugz In The Attic. Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. Ranging from the lounge-licking organ-massaging opener "Treacle Manifestations" to the Innervisions-era Wonder fusion frenzy "Shims", this - like everything he's done - is work of pure art. Essential.

Afro-focussed "Expensive Sheeeeet" comes with more switches than a cockpit as we flick between lolloping bass groove, deep tenor soul, rifle percussion and serious sprinkles of sunset magic. "Lando Disco" ventures west towards Brazil with rich orchestration, wondrous sweeping strings and a perfectly lamenting vocal. Sonic honey.

Review: Collocutor is British producer Tamar Osborn on baritone & soprano sax, and alto flute. 'The Search' is her second album together with her seven piece ensemble and follows up her great debut a couple of years ago named 'Instead'. Osborn has stated that "The album title refers to searching for a better way to exist in the world, but that could be emotional, spiritual or more simply a move to a geographically different place." Starting out with the sombre Sun Ra vibe of "Disappearance", things delve into deeper and darker territory on the suspenseful and cinematic "Conversation 2" while the 12 minute long epic "Here To There To Everywhere" is an incredible voyage down free jazz territories. The last track is called 'Arrival' and hopefully suggests something positive for us to aim for in these unsettled times.

Review: One of the UK's most distinctive, consistent and authentic male soul voices returns with his eighth album in 27 years... And it's a serious piece of work. Rich in range, warmth, creativity and a keen eye on the dancefloor, everything about him feels refreshed and energised. Highlights include the Dilla-meets-Iz & Diz style "This Way That Way", the glistening Balearic charm of "Feeds My Mind", the syrupy organs and harmonies on "Insatiable". Winding down with the almost filmic narrative "Grey Clouds", it's one of those records that will have you leaping up, flipping to side A and starting all over again. Feel the love.

Review: Destination Detroit as Randolph brings together a series of collaborations, remixes and productions with European producers. Dorfmeister kicks off with a deeply dubby house twist on "Heavy" while Austria's Rodney Hunter amps up the jazz on "No Gonna Let You". Wahoo's "Don't Take It Personal" glides us back to 2007 in street soul shoes while Kirk brings us back to the future in the dreamiest of states. Other sublime highlights include Opolopo's Sneak-style house chugs on "Shake House" and Dial 81's sludgy slo-mo buzzes and shuffles on "Luminous State". A fine collection and great showcase of Randolph's broad range and versatility.

Review: Alongside Schema label-mate Nicola Conte, Gerardo Frisina has been at the forefront of the Italian nu-jazz scene for the best part of two decades. In that time, he's released a string of fine albums, though this full-length excursion - his sixth in total - is Frisina's first since 2014. Like previous sets, it's rooted in jazz and the heavily percussive rhythms of South America, but also looks to dub and deep house for inspiration. While some of the album's more traditional moments are very good - see the breezy "Blue Latin" and "Naquela Base" - it's those blessed with heavy sub-bass and lashings of echo and delay (check "InCantao" and "Baracoa") that hit home hardest.

"Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

Review: Given his impressive track record, hopes are naturally high for Bonobo's sixth album, Migration, which is his first full-length since 2013. Happily, it's a majestic affair, with the producer delivering another sumptuous set of tracks. It was partly inspired by an extended period musing on the nature of personal identity, and the role that nationality plays in that. This concept is translated via thoughtful lyrics, and songs that draw musical influence from the four corners of the globe. It's not a big stylistic leap, of course - his bread and butter remains yearning, emotion-rich downtempo music built around gently jazzy grooves and impeccable live instrumentation - but given that few artists do it better than Bonobo, we'll forgive him for that.

  17. Reach One (With Two Fender Rhodes) (1973) (16:46)
Review: Up until Peter Gordon's recent revival, excerpts from Arthur Russell's 1975 composition Instrumentals - inspired by his studies of Indian and western music while in San Francisco a few years previously - had only ever been performed in public on a handful of occasions. While this may have partly been due to the Russell's desire for it to be performed in a single 48-hour cycle, it has meant that the few recordings that do exist have remained hidden for decades. This superb double album gathers together those excerpts, recorded between 1974 and 78 in New York, alongside recordings of two other early Russell works. Musically, it's as strange, imaginative and touching as you'd expect, with Instrumentals variously fusing pastoral classical music, Indian mysticism, and (then) contemporary Americana.

Review: Ready for a strange soul sensation? Say hello to Henry Wu. After a smattering of outings on 22a and XVI, the Londoner jumps aboard Ho Tep with his first extensive extended document. "Don't Want The Regular" is a hazy twist on slo-mo broken beat, all dreamy and just the right amount of abstract. "Expensive Ghetto" takes the abstract even further with a jazz trumpet that wanders so free it's nearly off the page. "Black Rigsby" is more floor-focused as it looks towards the likes of Detroit with strange filtered synth wriggles and spacy overtones, "Just Negotiate" sits somewhere between Andrew Ashong and Amp Fiddler with its yearning lyrics and hugely enveloping synths and finally "Joint September" closes the show on a reflective jazzy note. Dreamy.

  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

"Watusi Fever" sidesteps to the left with a more complex time signature, layers of subtle percussive texture and flutes that pepper with funk. Get on this.

Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: The Galaxy Sound Company continue their quest for the ultimate disco edit with this new mystery 12" by Starmachine. It's more house than disco this time, to be honest, but this EP makes for a fine crossover between the two genres, and will surely appeal to corresponding DJs. "As Long As I've Got You" is instantly recognisable for its famous Rhodes keys, while "Hands On 120 BPM" is a house chugger that samples Mulatu Astatke's most famous piece - essential tune! "Star Machine" swaggers from left to right with a sleek groove and sexy trumpets, while "Too Far 122 BPM" provides a glorious wail of vocals and house beats to tie this fabulous EP off in fine style.

Review: Arguably better known for his work as Kid Costa - or, for that matter, as part of Blue Mode - Roger "Chip" Wickham returns to Lovemonk with his first solo release for nigh on six years. It's a biggie two, marking his first trip into the full-length format. It sees him explore his love of jazz in all its form, flitting between Dave Brubeck-esque funkiness ("Sling Shot"), Kyoto Jazz Massive style workouts ("Red Planet"), spiritual epics (see "Tokyo Slow Mo"), cinematic fare ("Pushed Too Far") and thrillingly uptempo jazz-dance hits ("Le Leyenda Del Tiempo"). Throughout, his impeccable flute playing remains a constant feature.

Review: Theo Conrad (better known for his work under the Paxton Fettel alias) has long been one of Greta Cottage Workshop's most intriguing artists. His first full-length for the Devon imprint, Everything Stays The Same, inhibited similar territory to the classic deep house/downtempo/soul/jazz fusion of fellow West Country dwellers The Rurals. This follow-up is, if anything, even better. Described by the label as "instrumental contemporary jazz-funk", the album sees Conrad combining loose jazz breaks and jazzy synths with the kind of rich grooves, fireside textures and dreamy electronics more often found in vintage deep house productions. It's a formula that results in a string of brilliant tracks.

Review: There was much excitement surrounding Granit Records' recent reissue of Claude Rodap's sole album, 1982's synthesizer-heavy fusion of traditional Martinique styles and (then) contemporary electronic music, Syn-Ka. Now Rush Hour is getting in on the act, issuing three more obscure Rodap productions - this time made around the turn of the Millennium - on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the rainforest melodies, spacey synth-bass and gentle tropical rhythms of "Hiwa", to the glistening, guitar-laden Caribbean Balerica of closer "Zouklove". The track that sits in between, the denser, jazzier, solo heavy "Paco", is also superb.

Review: Since releasing his second album in 2013, James Blake has become one of the most in-demand artists and producers on the planet, recently appearing on Beyonce's much-hyped "visual album", Lemonade. On The Colour In Anything, it's very much business as usual, with Blake only occasionally veering away from his drowsy, atmospheric, piano-and-vocal template. These variations on a theme - the subtle, 4/4 techno-pop of opener "Radio Silence", the autotune-sporting R&B pop of "I Need A Forest Fire", tactile warmth of "Always", and frankly quite odd accapella throw-down "Meet You In The Maze" - add interest, though Blake remains at his best when concentrating on his most emotion-rich and heart-aching songs.

Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Review: Jose James is widely regarded as one of contemporary jazz's most talented vocalists. Previously, he's given his spin on the music of Billie Holliday on Yesterday I Had The Blues, and showcased his own jazz compositions on fine albums for Brownswood and Blue Note. On this album - his first since 2015 - he's completely flipped the script, turning his attention to the worlds of R&B, modern soul, trap and electro-pop. While it's a notable stylistic shift, there are still nods to previously explored influences - think Americana and gospel, in particular - while James' impeccable vocal delivery and lyrical dexterity shines through the polished beats, sparkling synthesizers, gritty bass and radio-friendly workouts.

The Rockberry Jam EP is actually his solo debut for the label and is a 'thick, crunchy concoction of sweet and sample-heavy grooves'. Each track was recorded live, according to the American artist, who claims that his production methods involved realtime sampling of his music collection via iTunes, alongside additional loops ripped from vinyl; also employing a spontaneous methodology. "The record is really like my record collection randomly coming together above a kick drum."

Review: As Skalpel, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo were long considered the most under rated act on the Ninja Tune roster with two sublime albums in the middle of the last decade and a slew of great 12"s. After a lengthy hiatus the Polish duo have re-emerged with a single that precedes Transit, a third album that's pencilled in for release later this year. Entitled Simple, this five track 12" is of course anything but simple with Cichy and Pudlo's effortless mastery of jazz and electronica fully on display. Skalpel fans will be spoilt for choice, with the tracks "On The Road" and "Simple (Version)" that close the A Side and open the B Side the two that have got most rotation in the Juno office.

Review: Serious funk vibes abound on this repress from 2011. London duo Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel lay down a stripped-back bass n' breakbeat combo allowing full emphasis on the tightly plucked bass, tight horn noodles and chanty Jay Kay flavoured singing. Think Kraak & Smaak circa Boogie Angst with just a bit more trad JBs style funk. Flip for an equally funky adventure courtesy of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Giving the Hot 8 Brass Band a run for their money, it's a sweeping series of dreamy horns that can't help but suck you deep into the mix.

Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".
