Review: There's no doubt that Berliner's Max Graef and Glenn Astro are some of the biggest success stories to emerge from the deep house sound and creating their own signature style that's often copied of late, but seldom ever matched! Sure, the dusty hip-hop inspired jams are no doubt indebted to Detroit legends such as Theo Parrish or Andres but they've certainly put their own slant on it and created a new sound for the German capital to be synonymous with. Testament to their success is this LP for the legendary Ninja Tune; The Yard Work Simulator. Nearly a dozen tracks of chilled, sampledelic, MPC driven dope jams that are the perfect soundtrack for a misspent youth in Berlin this Summer. In particular check the raggedy junkyard joint that is "Where Fuck Are My Hard Boiled Eggs" or the psychedelic urban soul jam that is the title track.

Review: Panorama Bar resident and Ostgut Ton mainstay Virginia is back with a full length. Whether she's lending her fine vocal talents to home girl Steffi (who co-produced the album with fellow Dutch legends Dexter and Martyn) like she did on her Power of Anonymity album a couple of years ago (like on the fabulous "Yours") or getting behind the console herself to pump out some sweet grooves; she sure is versatile. Fierce For The Night is a fitting title, the dozen or so tracks on here are the perfect soundtrack to a long evening and morning experiencing her acclaimed residency and all inspired by the classic and timeless sounds of Chicago via NYC. Highlights include the sexy dancefloor drama of the mighty opener "Bally Linny", the Chaka Chan inspired boogie playground that is "Obstacle" or the emotional and bittersweet slow-mo pop of "Believe In Time" . Not to mention the high octane dancefloor bomb that is "Raverd"

Review: Yes Eglo! Alex Nut and crew turn to two elder statesmen of London beat science in Dego and Kaidi Tatham for a killer induction into the art of crafting 'broken beat bullets'. For those who don't possess the necessary knowledge, Dego is the most familiar handle of Dennis McFarlane, founding member of 4Hero and responsible for so much good music over the years, and Tatham has an equally important role in the whole Broken Beat movement, being an integral member of the Bugz In the Attic collective. The pair have worked together previously on numerous occasions and they are on top form here with lead track "Ankle Injury" demonstrating a perfect balance of melody and crafty rhythm. Imagine Theo and Floating Points collaborating and your heads in the right spot to enjoy this track and "Acting Up On That Shit Don't Count" which is the sort of music you could imagine RAMP to be making if they were on the rise today. Do check the sumptuous piano and Rhodes vibes on final cut "Carrots & Sesame"!!

  3. Backchat For Toprock (5:12)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

Review: New Orleans nine-piece, The Hot 8 Brass Band, return to their breakthrough track. Arguably one of the best Marvin Gaye covers in the history of versions, Tru Thoughts have commissioned a brace of contemporisations and pressed them limited edition gold vinyl: J Felix adds a light-footed P-funk bedrock, Ibibio Sound Machine add a dubby weight to the drums, light synths and a cheeky guitar lick, Maddslinky lays down a straight up house strut, Werkha gets his jazzy shuffle on while Jonny Faith twists up a little Jamaican flavour with a dancehall beat and light skanks. Sexual.

Review: It's been almost five years since Four Tet's last LP. However, you could never accuse Kieran Hebden of being lazy, having spent the years since 2005's Everything Ecstatic working on a number of EPs, collaborations and mixes, not to mention enough remixes to keep any student going throughout their perpetual revision period.

His fifth studio album to date forms a combination of minimal dance and amalgamations of sounds and ideas from his career so far. It serves a timely reminder of the joy of genre mashing in what is one of the first important releases of the new decade.

After the delicate and disjointed vocal-led opener 'Angel Echoes' we move into what will be Four Tet's next single, the hypnotic nine minute colossal, 'Love Cry.' Jazz percussion is layered over a sprawling house sentiment that builds exponentially throughout the saga. The aptly named 'Circling' uses hazy synthesizers to progresses from a soft, folk-like beginning to flamboyant end before we are treated to the fantastically warped female vocal that gives the defining factor on 'Sing.' Following 'Plastic People's' clap-infused melodic wandering, we reach 'She Just Likes To Fight' which seems to capture the emotional undertones that lay covered throughout the whole LP in a heart-warming sense of utter contentment.

It seems the long wait for an LP was more than worth it as Four Tet delivers guides through a labyrinth of musical tastes and genres whilst never losing his way in experimentation or self indulgence. Pushing limits, but in an ear-pleasing way, 'There Is Love In You' is yet another reason to jump aboard Four Tet.

Review: Emotional Rescue starts 2016 digging deep in to the early 80s Bristol post punk scene of Pig Pag, the Wild Bunch and the Dug Out club. A short lived project of just 3 releases, Mouth trail-blazed leftfield percussive jams in the rich vain of Liquid Liquid and ESG but in their own jazz-infused way. Centered round the cultural melting post of the St Paul's district, it's pubs, clubs and blues parties threw together young and old to the sounds of dub, funk, jazz and soul and took the spark lit by punk rock and new wave and spawned music that still resonates today. Here then, on one EP are their complete recordings, including as the title cut, their best and deepest, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Featured on a compilation LP from the legendary Y Records, its bottom heavy dub sound is augmented by female and toasted vocals riding a top a heavy stepper style riddim. This is followed by an increasingly dizzy array of percussion jams. Acab (Part 2) is all skips and trumpets, while the versions of Take Your Coat Off perfect skat vocal / tom interplay, before the finale busts out the rockabilly influences in full effect with jagged guitar, skipping hats meets double bass punk style.

Review: One of the most exciting singer/songwriters to have emerged in contemporary jazz this century, Jose James' first album - The Dreamer - enjoys a new master and 180g picture vinyl. These new touches are superfluous when it comes to the actual sounds and ideas Jose laid down on his first LP. From the lavish keystrokes, brushed drums and hushed whispered vocals of James on "Blackeyedsusan", the modern day gospel throwdown that is "Spirits Up Above" to the lolloping momentum of "Red" that builds into a funky, almost furious, frenzy, Jose excelled himself with this near-immaculate debut in 2006... If it's not in your collection yet, you know what to do.

Review: Que sonzeira! This is Gilles Peterson's most ambitious project to date... Last year he shipped himself and various key creative producers to Rio to build a document that celebrates every quarter of Brazil's broad sound by way of 18 original productions. Working the likes of Floating Points, members of 2 Banks Of 4 and local maestro Kassin, they sourced some the country's most authentic, exciting imaginative performers to create unique compositions that transcend any idea of homage to become their own entities that speak a universal groove language. The other-worldly rain forest flute-wheezing mists of "The Plum Blossom", the star-gazing lullaby harmonies of "Estrelar", the weeping chord phrases and soft whispers "City Saints", the scruffy dubby loops and percussive insistency of "Where Nana Hides"... While most Brazilian collections rehash or reboot the original source, this has created its very own. The fact it's the first release on Talkin Loud in over 10 years makes it even more special.

Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

Review: Well what can you say about a tune that has already blown up on the drum & bass scene? This wicked release on Giles Peterson's Brownswood label features vocalist Ben Westbeach. The "Lovers Mix" rolls out in a Jazzy and soulful style before introducing a tight rolling groove. Flip it over and you will find the "Rockers Mix". This is the track that everyone is raving about. The "Rockers Mix" kicks off in the same vein as the flip before dropping into a monstrous, pulsating breakdown, a frantic build-up leads into a massive dancefloor drop that is instant rewind material. This one has been murdered by every big DJ including Groove, Friction, Zinc, Bryan, Hype, Brockie, Roni Size and Clipz.

Review: Pete Josef's album for Sonar Kollektiv, the aptly named Colour, was a fitting piece of future soul and downtempo for this now legendary leftfield jazz outpost. Luckily, the label are as open-minded as the music on their catalogue, and they've decided to have a selection of tunes from the LP remixed and rewired into minimal dance cuts by a fine group of names. LV adds a subtle kick-hat to "Hope", while Fabian Dikof's dub version of "Colour" spirals the listener into a deep, trip web of strobe-light minimal for the peak hours. On the flip, "Spring At Last" is retouched by The Black 80s and transformed into a delicate, bouncy house chiller, followed by another glorious remix of colour by Potatohead People Lights Off, this time taking the tune to slower, more hip-hop-leaning territories.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

Review: In case you've been living under a very thick layer of concrete for the past ten years, The Heliocentrics are a collective run by Malcolm Catto who explore everything form funk, to hip-hop and jazz, held together by their mutual - and spiritual - admiration for powers of Sun Ra, and the legacy that he's left behind. No, we won't tell you who Sun Ra is, you should know. Their new LP From The Deep comes on Now-Again, their usual home, and an offshoot of the mighty Stones Throw. With twelve tracks for you to get your head around, there's plenty in here for everyone, and the string jazzy element that carries the album forwards is only the backbone of the music. The rest, our friends, is pure experimentation of every sort, and from electronica to exotica and hip-hop, it's a true journey into outer space. God Ra would be proud.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

  20. Don Was Interview
Review: It would be fair to say that Gregory Porter is a man on the rise. In the four years since he made his debut, the jazz singer-songwriter has become one of the most name-checked soul men on the planet. Take Me To The Alley, his first album for three years, sees him flexing his musical muscles more impressively than ever before. Much of the material sits somewhere between Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sammy Davis Jnr and Nat King Cole, with Porter's effortlessly evocative vocals accompanied by smooth jazz pianos, winding horns, shuffling drums and undulating double bass. This 'Deluxe Edition' comes bundled with a DVD containing a wealth of videos, alternate versions and, most interestingly, a 20-minute interview with Don Was.

Review: A winningly presented live experience, Robert Glasper and his partners in time signatures perform a whirlwind set of favourites from the Black Radio collection. Highlights include the mindboggling rhythm and dexterity of "Stella By Starlight", the throaty monologue of the legend that is Harry Belafonte on "Got Over" and the softer, more reflective "The Worst". Live recordings go one of two ways; they either alienate you from the fun or they make you feel like you're right there in the front row. This is, without question, the latter. Beautiful.

Review: It has only taken two albums for Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka, and Rob Turner to land with an LP on the legendary Blue Note label, but they've done it, and they've done it in fine style. Moreover, it's also a bold move from Blue Note, who only usually steer away from pure jazz for the likes of Madlib and co, but in hindsight, the Gogo Penguin trio have what it takes to be remembered as fine producers of beat-driven free jazz. Mixing up elements of nu-soul, together with broken beat and classic jazz, the trio's music is wild and diverse, and fully representative of the label's vision and charisma. Also, it's exactly the sort of thing that Gilles Peterson is in to, so sit back, relax, and let Man Made Object take you away.

  1. Eventide (14:12)
  2. Introduction (4:42)
  3. Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Review: Ed Cawthorne goes by the name of Tenderlonious when he's in the mood to make dusty, sample-laced house with a soulful edge. The dude has previously released on London's 22a, and also Sounds Of The Universe's own imprint, but he's back and he's landed on Osunlade's Yoruba Records, releasing choice house magic since 1999. There's six tracks on offer here, and they're all as magical as you'd expect from the shady Tenderlonious; it's a mix of funky house and neo tribalism, just like Osunlade likes in his sets. We're loving the jazzy Latin percussions of "Sula", the flute-driven mind-bender that is "Mind That Window", and the daring, Rhodes-driven beauty in the name of "Without You".

Review: With a current tour including a date at London's Brixton Academy, it's safe to say that this New Zealand seven piece are big news. This could have something to do with the universal good times vibes of their output. Here, the self-proclaimed 'heavyweight soul providers' are back with album number three and it sees them delve pushing their sound deeper into the realms of Afrocentric, dubby electronica. Highlights include the brassy, sunny ska of the title track, "Blackbird", the electro-funk of "Silver & Gold" and the pulsating digital disco of "Never Moving".

Review: Not a lot is known about this Berlin-based project right now, besides rumours of a full album of originals later on this year. For now we have two awesome bootleg/edits... "My Wild Love" gives The Doors a smoky, mid 90s rolling D&B twist they've always deserved while "Twisted" takes Wayne G's heavily sexual spoken word hard house anthem from 1997 a Latin twist that no one could ever have predicted... And is about a trillion time better than the original. We need more of this.

Review: Anthony Joseph's roots run deep in the Caribbean, and the Trinidad native's singular spoken word style is full of colour and energy, just like the islands he hails from. All the music on Caribbean Roots is essentially a form of funked-out free jazz, but the vocals on the likes of "The Kora" are as powerful and evocative as the music itself. But the madness doesn't end there by any stretch of the imagination - the Miles Davis like speed of "Drum Song" is like a call to the Gods, "Slinger" is a fast-paced afrofunk shuffle, and others like "Our History" offer a more soulful edge to this wonderfully contained pandemonium. Fantastic music.

Review: Bones & Beeker are a nu-school hip-hop duo from Minneapolis, and their debut LP for Wax Poetics earlier this year was a true stand-out among the jazzy, broken beat end of the spectrum. They return to the label with their second EP, a two-tracker with awesome flair and a delightful injection of soulfulness. "Heartbroken In Love" is sweet and dreamy, with Anthony Newes' vocals gliding like silk over Brendan Kelly's multi-faceted beats and harmonics waves. On the flip, "Oh Lord" goes all psychedelic and hippy on us, but the pair still retain that distinctive soul edge that makes them unique among the contemporary beat-heads. This is a tip and half...

Review: From the bones of Staff Benda Bilili, Congolese misfits Mbongawna Star arise to make their debut. And it's clear their intention to turn African music completely on its head. From the hip-hop style chants and processed vocals of "Masobele" to the punk-like fury and frenzy of "Nganshe" via the soft, yearning bluegrass slides and soul of "Coco Blues", From Kinshasa fuses, amuses and at points confuses. Most importantly it keeps you coming back for more. Genuinely an album like no other.

Review: Active since 2011, London 'music venture' Wotnot have really hit their stride in the past few years with records from K15, Glenn Astro, and Deft. Wotnot's first vinyl transmission of the year welcomes back the Astro traveller who has been making waves with releases for Tartelet, Box Aus Holz and his own Money $ex Records. Astro is on fine form with Hologram which operates in a similar hard to define space as Mo Kolours, Henry Wu, Jeen Bassa, Max Graef et al, pulling influences from house and hip hop and flushing it all with his own vibrant palette of sounds. On first listen you'll probably gravitate towards the oven warm house business of "User's Guide To" but give it some time and it will be hard to really nail down one particular favourite such is the strength of Hologram as a whole.

Review: Brighton jazz/soul two piece Soccer96 get a makeover for their Jupiter Masterdrive release from 2014. NYC's legendary Danny Krivit gives "Flight Formation" a re-edit that only a true master of the artform truly can. He definitely emphasises the best parts of the track, not to mention all the uplifting soulfulness of it.. like he does! Berlin's purveyor of dusty hip-hop influenced deep house Glenn Astro also steps up to resplice the source material of said track too, giving it his Midas touch. Finally Danvers does a remix of "Step Overs" and does a fine job, remaking the track into a deep funky house jam that honours the late nineties sound, vaguely reminiscent of the French Touch style.
