Review: Following up the runaway success of Crooks & Lovers was always going to be a daunting task for Mount Kimbie, and they've wisely taken their time to come back with a step forwards from a sound which gave rise to the more folky strains of the dubstep aftermath. Sounding fresh and invigorated on their LP for Warp, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker have built on their love of shoegaze indie and brought their component parts into a clearer vision where they used to hide them behind heavy editing and microsampling. There are plenty of reminders that this is a Kimbie record, not least in the winsome melodies that shape the LP, but the duo have succeeded in shearing away their self-conscious trickery to write full-bodied songs that hit on first listen, rather than ten spins down the line.

Review: As played by Sadar Bahar two more slices of official dance floor dynamite from the Disco Fuentes catalogue get unleashed on the strictly vinyl only, singles only Mukatsuku Record label for summer 2013. First up is an unreleased version of the popular Wganda Kenya club favourite 'Tipit Hayed' which Blundetto had done a few years ago for his own DJ sets but never surfaced commercially. On the flipside a bona fide salsa funk monster which a piano intro to die for from Fruko Y Sus Tesos. Review: Mercury-nominated Soul subverters The Invisible drop the second single from their album Patience with top shelf results: not only are we treated to brand new non album track "First Time" (a slinky exercise in futureproofed electro boogie), not only do we enjoy the hazy string safari "Life's Dancers" but we're also provided with an immaculate Floating Points extension. Doubling the length of the already beautiful original with his own subtle kaleidoscopic soul textures, it's a triple win scenario for all concerned - especially you.

Review: OYE crew and Berlin purveyors of dusty, hip-hop inspired deep house make their major label debut for Ninja Tune and good on them. It really is their time at present, what with their Money $ex and Box Aus Holz imprints going from strength to strength. "Magic Johnson" inspires the greatness of the song's namesake. All dusty jazz breaks, dreamy rhodes and xylophones and whirring organs are the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday stroll through Prenzlauer Berg after a night of clubbing on no sleep, finishing off in Mauerpark for falafel and record digging. Want something moodier and sleeker? The pair are on hand with the dubbed up "Tape Johnson" take on the B Side.

  1. On Our Way Home (feat Fatima & Jimetta Rose) (5:41)
Review: Experienced producer Shafiq Husayn first appeared on Eglo back in 2014, delivering a fine EP of hip-hop framed modern soul, with the assistance of a battery of collaborators. Two years on he returns to Alex Nut and Floating Points label, with Eglo regulars Fatima and Jimetta Rose lending a hand. It sounds like Husayn has been listening to Floating Points, because "On Our Way Home" is a sumptuous, string-drenched affair, with orchestral parts rising and falling over a skittish electronic rhythm. The focal point, of course, is Fatima and Rose's harmonious lead vocal, which is as sweet, evocative and addictive as you'd expect. It may only be a single-sided release, but it's one killer cut.

Review: It's been almost five years since Four Tet's last LP. However, you could never accuse Kieran Hebden of being lazy, having spent the years since 2005's Everything Ecstatic working on a number of EPs, collaborations and mixes, not to mention enough remixes to keep any student going throughout their perpetual revision period.

His fifth studio album to date forms a combination of minimal dance and amalgamations of sounds and ideas from his career so far. It serves a timely reminder of the joy of genre mashing in what is one of the first important releases of the new decade.

After the delicate and disjointed vocal-led opener 'Angel Echoes' we move into what will be Four Tet's next single, the hypnotic nine minute colossal, 'Love Cry.' Jazz percussion is layered over a sprawling house sentiment that builds exponentially throughout the saga. The aptly named 'Circling' uses hazy synthesizers to progresses from a soft, folk-like beginning to flamboyant end before we are treated to the fantastically warped female vocal that gives the defining factor on 'Sing.' Following 'Plastic People's' clap-infused melodic wandering, we reach 'She Just Likes To Fight' which seems to capture the emotional undertones that lay covered throughout the whole LP in a heart-warming sense of utter contentment.

It seems the long wait for an LP was more than worth it as Four Tet delivers guides through a labyrinth of musical tastes and genres whilst never losing his way in experimentation or self indulgence. Pushing limits, but in an ear-pleasing way, 'There Is Love In You' is yet another reason to jump aboard Four Tet.

Review: Since 2012, Soul Jazz's Sounds of the Universe offshoot - named, of course, after the imprint's London store - has delivered a string of inspired 12" singles featuring exclusive cuts from the likes of Andres (the brilliant, Latin-tinged house gem "Ribena"), Tevo Howard (the yearning, deep, instrumental synth-pop of "Summer Romance"), and Heatsick (the deliciously wonky "Snakes & Ladders"). Here, they gather together these inspired, previously vinyl-only moments on CD for the first time, alongside a second disc of never before heard cuts. This selection is, of course, every bit as good, and boasts stunning contributions from DJ Stingray (the fluid Detroit electro of "Cytokines"), Seven Davis Jnr, Ras G and Golden Teacher (the dubwise, off-kilter pulse of "Maladroit").

Review: When Peggy Lee slinked around in the 50s to the sultry strains of "Fever", could she ever have imagined that half a century later, people like Romare would be turning her tune into a weed smokin', love makin' slo-mo RnB jam? Unlikely to say the least, but "Your Love (You Give Me Fever") is on the money and respectful, if different to the original's mood. Elsewhere on Romare's latest Black Acre release, "Jimi & Faye" is a warped take on blues, "Taste Of Honey" recalls the days of daisy age hip-hop and "Hey Now" is a weary and haunting piano lament.

Review: Vanishing Twin's recent explosion on the scene has been met with excitement and wonder from both ourselves and the rest of the industry. That's because it's made up of some serious talent: Innerspace Orchestra's Cathy Lucas is at the helm with her vocals, Raime's drummer Valentina Magaletti is on the percussion, the bass comes from Floating Points' collaborator Susumu Mukai, and Man From Uranus tweaks the knobs. As you can see, it's a rather eccentric collection of artists. This mysterious and, at times, spectral strain of high-powered jazz follows in the footsteps of Sun Ra's mythical work, where we're dropped into a dark and compelling world of percussion, Eastern chimes and progressive jazz grooves. There's plenty of moments of oddity, too, and that is exactly where this outfit thrive. It's the short moments of madness between the more composed shreds of jazz that make this album stand out among the crowd. Excellent.

Review: After last year's brooding 7", Regis and Silent Servant return to Minimal Wave with their Sandra Electronics project and to be honest, we couldn't be more excited. Hearing what these two techno leviathans are up to in their more industrial modes is both a privilege and a pleasure to the ear-drums. Exploring the genre-less corners of coldwave and post-punk, this six-track EP is probably one if this year's hottest releases so far. From the crisp, metallic drum twists of "It Slipped Her Mind" to the almost Middle-Eastern sounds of "Protection Now!", and the noisy, Gristle-like bounce of "Publicity (demo)", it's a total winner in our books. You also get a live version of "Want Need", where the duo culminate into total insanity and tie things off in fine style. Are these two going to concentrate on this kind of stuff form now one? We hope so, this is it. Highly recommended.

Review: ** Repress in new DBA new labels and sleeves courtesty of Optigram design agency ** The Sun Goddess EP is Beatnick's second outing for the DBA imprint, impressing further on our ears his undeniable talent for crafting housier tackle than the smudged out boogie he came to the fore with for labels like Burntprogress and Altered Vibes. It would take an uneducated ear to not bask in the glory of the title track, which positively reeks of glowering warmth and rhythmic intricacy that's reminiscent of Theo P in his more laidback moments. This approach to programming of subtly introducing track mutations - either melodically or rhythmically - seeps through the rest of the EP ensuring each track reveals all new moments of delight with each listen.

This belated, mixtape style follow-up is something of a beast, with 28 cuts, interludes and quick-fire rhythm tracks to enjoy. Like its' predecessor, Rye Lane Volume II & III is similar in ethos to the work of his friend and contemporary Mo Kolours, with tropical rhythms, African drums and low-slung hip-hop beats being combined with dusty vocal samples, rich Rhodes chords, freshly baked electronics, and all manner of tasty global influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the Middle Eastern shuffle of "Overseas Lebanese", and Afro-jazz drum workout "Malful (Nebetia)", to the eyes-down deep house bliss of "Peru Timing (Part 2)

Review: On the cover of his first album for a decade, saxophonist Kamasi Washington stares intently out, the universe stretching out to infinity behind him. You see, Washington is something of a Sun Ra acolyte, and there's something of the great man's spiritual, psychedelic and far-sighted feel about The Epic. Rooted in a loose, soulful and occasionally riotous blend of spiritual jazz, it more than lives up to its' name, stretching across three themed CDs. While Washington's tenor sax offers a focal point throughout, it's merely part of a greater ensemble effort - Sun Ra Arkestra style - that helps The Epic fly by in a flurry of loose-limbed drums, rubbery double bass, hammered-out pianos and intoxicating vocals.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

His haziest, softest and most consistent set so far, his falsetto dulcets wrap around a whirlwind of styles that are tailor made for vinyl. Sloping and sliding into each other all the way, from the slippery wah-wah guitar disco of "Them Changes" to the Plantlife-style funk of "Lone Wolf & Club" to the trippy ambience of "That Moment", we're gradually moved slowly, softly and sweetly throughout.

Review: There's something wonderfully hazy and fluid about this debut album from German producer Hodini. Built around a combination of unapologetically blazed instrumental hip-hop, Moodymann influences, and the sort tumbling, swinging, sample heavy deep house promoted by Andres, Seven Davis Jr and others, M$03 sound tailor made for humid, lazy summer afternoons. There are collaborations with Glenn Astro and Max Graef, amongst others, and an overriding sense that Hodini is a producer on the rise. Grab a beer, slouch against the nearest tree, light up a jazz cigarette and get lost in the groove.

Review: Having previously impressed with a range of loose, organic deep house jams blessed with delicious live instrumentation, Max Graef has decided to go one further. Dog is the debut album from the Max Graef Band, a five-piece featuring the producer on bass, plus a drummer, guitarist, percussionist, and both synth and piano players. Apparently, the majority of the music was the product of impromptu jam sessions, and you can hear it. Throughout their journeys through cosmic funk, deep disco, jazz-funk and organic deep house, you can sense a frisson of excitement and a pleasingly unpolished looseness. Initial copies of the vinyl edition come bundled with a bonus 7". This includes a brilliant, dancefloor-focused Gerald Astor edit of LP highlight "Cbolx".

Review: Once upon a time, this kind of gathering of broken beat and nu-jazz masters - not to mention the stellar cast list of guest instrumentalists and vocalists - would have caused major ripples. As it is, Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks will probably fall through the cracks. That would be a crying shame, because it's actually pretty tasty. Soulful, deep, jazz-flecked and brilliantly produced, it sounds like a long lost collaboration between IG Culture, Herbie Hancock and Bugz In The Attic (unsurprising since it features many Bugz collaborators and members, from Mark De Clive-Lowe and Bembe Segue, to Mark Force and, of course, Kaidi Tatham). Highlights are plentiful, from the liquid funk of "Mr Pickles", to the sweet modern soul of "Get Up, Lift Up", via the floor-friendly pulse of "Kenny".

Review: DC chill dons Thievery Corporation first released this LP 18 years ago. And, like all classics, it still sounds as timeless and immersive as it did when it first hit our ears. From the swooning chords and easy-groove bedrock of "2001" to the heavy tabla-induced meditation of "Transcendance" via the ever-delicate breakbeat lullaby of "Incident At Gate 7", Sounds From The Thievery HiFi spawned the first generation of hippies the 21st century ever saw. This album is many things; a lesson in chill, a lesson in sample magic, a lesson in long and languishing grooves. If you haven't got this in your collection yet, you know what to do.

Review: Not a lot is known about this Berlin-based project right now, besides rumours of a full album of originals later on this year. For now we have two awesome bootleg/edits... "My Wild Love" gives The Doors a smoky, mid 90s rolling D&B twist they've always deserved while "Twisted" takes Wayne G's heavily sexual spoken word hard house anthem from 1997 a Latin twist that no one could ever have predicted... And is about a trillion time better than the original. We need more of this.

Review: From the bones of Staff Benda Bilili, Congolese misfits Mbongawna Star arise to make their debut. And it's clear their intention to turn African music completely on its head. From the hip-hop style chants and processed vocals of "Masobele" to the punk-like fury and frenzy of "Nganshe" via the soft, yearning bluegrass slides and soul of "Coco Blues", From Kinshasa fuses, amuses and at points confuses. Most importantly it keeps you coming back for more. Genuinely an album like no other.

Review: DJ Junior's multi-skilled, many-souled in-house label troupe gets the reversion treatment with two fantastic dancefloor twists: Osgage adds a nicely loose and free-spirited house twist of "Batucada" that's reminiscent of Recloose's records. On the flip Sol Power All Stars take "Pela" and give it a beautiful sun-splashed Balearic polish. Both capture the sound of a carnival warm-up of the deepest marmalade sunset you've ever experienced, Record Breakin' have delivered something very special right here.

Review: Very few acts can reach their 16th album and still sound as exciting, fresh yet consistently slick and reassuringly familiar as Incognito. Delivering the finest jazz soul goods since 1979, Bluey Manuick has chiselled his band (fresh faces and old) to perfection once again on Amplified Soul. From the immense chorus impact and dreamy slides of "Wanna Be Loved" to the tight funk stutters of "Day Or Night" via the epic, heart-stopping two-part title track saga and the cinematic jazz majesty of "Wind Sorceress", this ticks every box you'd want it to. Timeless compositions, pristine production and that smooth yet solid Incognito signature we've fallen in love with so many times before.

Review: Following the summer-sizzled "LOVE Song" comes another smooth soul schooling from Victor Lavender. Smoking keys and a lolloping bassline set the scene as Diviniti's vocals cause a spell-binding ear roadblock to great effect. For something deeper and more percussive jump on ReelSoul's drum-heavy instrumental while Josh Milan Honeycomb extends the soul aspects and injects a tiny bit of jazz to recipe giving it a confident MAW-like polish. "1929" completes the set with more jazzed out leanings thanks to the dreamy keys and piano work, tied together neatly with a funky squidgy bassline and subtle percussion elements.

Review: Canada's Funky Lester duo have travelled below the radar in recent years, but the true funky collectors know them very well and will surely lap this up once they see a fresh 7" reissue of the duo's classic "Amigos" tune, a sweet part track featuring the Hispanic vocals of Don Gringos and the perfect balance of 4/4 beats and brass instruments. "Bboy Trombone" is a different sort of beast, an instrumental cut with a fast-moving percussion and cinematic horns wrapped up in a Brazilian jazz coating. Funky, easy on the ears and built for you to move. Cop it before it's gone!

Review: Given that Nina Simone's 1958 debut album, Little Girl Blue, is something of a stone cold classic, it would be fair to say that DJ Maestro was taking a huge risk when he decided to get it remixed by contemporary artists. Thankfully, most involved have done a fine job, balancing the need to put their own spin on things, while paying due reverence to the source material. Highlights include a slick Reflex edit of perennial favourite "My Baby Just Cares For Me", a fast-paced, jazz-dance flavoured interpretation of "Love Me Or Leave", a sumptuous deep house take on "I Loves You Porgy" by Medd Dierdrop, and, best of all, a fantastic Latin house rework of "African Mailman" by Opolopo.
