  1. Bring Me Down (9:32)
  2. Bring Me Down (Theo Parrish translation) (9:35)
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

Review: Arriving in the same week as that crucial Floating Points 12" drop Wires is Circle, the first offering from the upcoming debut album from the 'Queen Bee of Eglo' Fatima. Described as an ode to the stars, the title track sees Fatima drop vocals over production work from Los Angeles duo Computer Jay and Shafiq Husayn of Sa Ra Creative Partners fame. It's backed with "Technology" which features button pushing from Stones Throw artist (and Madlib's younger brother) Oh No, whilst this 12? edition features a wonderful ten minute live rendition of "Red Light" done in collaboration with the Eglo Live Band.

Review: "Clockwatching" is the first single taken from Belleruche’s third album 270 Stories, with singer Kathrin DeBoer delivering her usual charismatic vocal charm with submerged harmonies. On the flipside you’ll find a low slung reggaefied cover version of "Mirror In The Bathroom", originally recorded by The Beat. Lovely stuff.

Review: The Man sees certified UK soul legend Omar return with his seventh studio album and first in seven years! Finding a perfect home on the long running Freestyle Records, the man known as Omar Lye-Fook sounds in fine form on this thirteen track long player which features guest spots from fellow UK icon Caron Wheeler (of Soul II Soul fame) German funk troupe Hidden Jazz Quartett and bass player to the Gods Pino Palladino. Anyone that caught lead single "The Man" will find the rest of this album as much of a joy and pleasantly there are a few concessions to Omar's interest in Latin sounds which give The Man a bit more bump!

  1. On My Way To Harlem (Jazz & Cole edit)
  2. 1960 What ? (Jazz & Cole edit)
Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Review: Serious jazz dance fusion from 1974, Norman Connors' cover of Carlos Garnett's "Mother Of The Future" drives with shamanistic fury before the firing keys, heaving horns and deep soul vocals fly into the mix. For a more contemporary jazz take, flip for Bembe Segue's emphatic live version. Lavished with her distinctively rich vocals and stern spoken word and complete with wild bass runs and a thick bed of percussion, it's an instant show-stopper. Two incredible covers, one special 10".

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: In the early-to-mid 2000s, when nu-jazz was at its' peak, Compost Records' annual Future Sounds of Jazz compilation was always essential listening. This surprise 13th edition appears five years after its' predecessor, re-introducing the series to a whole new generation of listeners. Happily, its' every bit as essential as the series' earliest installments, and draws together all manner of jazz-leaning productions. You'll hear a string-drenched broken house gem from Falty DL, some Afro tech-jazz from Mr Raoul K, a supremely Balearic rework ofMatanza's "Existencia" from Acid Pauli, an epic electro-jazz throw down from Butch & C Voigt, and an essential remix of Tony Allen by Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer. Throw in fine contributions from Peter Kruder, Axel Boman and Chaos In The CBD, and you've got an essential collection.

Review: The ever-mutating twists and turns in Bolangassa's musical history continues. From his early '80s involvement in Congolese National Ballet in Paris to the roles (and instruments) he's played on various afro disco records to this new chapter. A wholly tribal affair that takes right back to his Congolese roots. Concentrated percussion where the drums sing for themselves, each of these three cuts are Shamanic in their arrangement, drive and insistency. "Disna Ngai" is the most tribal and ceremonial of the three as many hands make the rhythm work, "Rikikida" is a much slower, more rounded dynamic while "La Vie" is the peak of physical coercion as the pounding staccato hypnotises with a loopy vibrancy that most techno producers would dream of. Eye opening.

Review: Agogo's latest release features a quartet of artists remixing tracks from Mop Mop's fine - if a little overlooked - 2016 album Lunar Love. There's naturally a noticeable dancefloor focus, with Sub Modo delivering a pleasingly bass-heavy rework of Anthony Joseph hook-up "The Serpent" that also boasts some shuffling, intricately programmed, Innervisions style tech-house percussion. Also impressive is the trippy, late night voodoo of DJ Khaleb's version of "Totem", which is rich in tribal drum hits, feverish audio textures, chopped-up organ stabs and rolling grooves. If you're after something a little more horizontal, the Nicola Cruz re-make of "Totem" bobs along at a slower tempo, at the same time making more of Mop Mop's original, Afro-influenced instrumentation.

Review: Peace and football: not only the best compilation album title of 2006 (and possibly every year since) but also an immaculate collection of Brazilian folk, funk, disco and soul by Sonar Kollektiv champs Jazzanova. Ten years on and the SK dons are back with a second edition of Paz E Futbol, compiled with just as much care as an homage to football's spiritual home as that debut record. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Peace out.

Review: He's jazzed all over Bob. He's filled Grandmaster Flash with jazz too. Shucks, he's done Jacko several times over. But Ed's back and he's jazzing all over the place. This time they focus on the later stages of Jackson's career: "Dangerous" rolls with sneaking minor key twinkles and smoky spoken word before the melody softens to allow a little Michael in the mix. "Do You Remember" is more a jazz boogie joint with funky piano rolls on the fills and much more engaging groove.

Domu's always been a classy producer no matter what he turns his hands to and this pair of edits really do deserve to be preserved on the vinyl format - kudos to Kat! Up top, "Love Vibes" by The Emotions is given a slightly upwards pitch adjustment by Domu, with plenty of skilled filtering to boot, whilst the B-side sees Claudia Barry's classic 1978 jammer "Give it Up" is embellished with some extra raunch sauce.

Review: A winningly presented live experience, Robert Glasper and his partners in time signatures perform a whirlwind set of favourites from the Black Radio collection. Highlights include the mindboggling rhythm and dexterity of "Stella By Starlight", the throaty monologue of the legend that is Harry Belafonte on "Got Over" and the softer, more reflective "The Worst". Live recordings go one of two ways; they either alienate you from the fun or they make you feel like you're right there in the front row. This is, without question, the latter. Beautiful.

Review: It would not be fair to think of United Vibrations without the word "masters". That is, masters of the future jazz category, a deeply exploitive and diverse strain of pseudo electronic music that has its roots firmly weaved into the dynasty by greats such as Sun Ra. Their new album, The Myth Of The Golden Ratio, has dropped on Ubiquity, and it's nothing short of a spectacular 8-track journey into the deepest, most soulful realms of nu-jazz. Tracks like "Scion" and "Sophia" also contain an indie element to them, while others like "I Am We" could almost be categorised as broken beat, or some form of deranged house music with a soulful edge. All in all, it's a sublime piece of work.

Review: Esteemed deep house producers Glen Astro and Max Graef have much in common musically, not least a shared love of crusty chords, fuzzy textures and dusty, soul-flecked samples. It's good to see the pair joining forces, not only in the studio, but also to launch the Money Sex label. This first collaborative EP (for both artists and label) is packed full of warm-but-distorted, immersive deep house, with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure. That's certainly how we'd describe the eccentric "Caribbean Screwdriver" (all loose, densely layered percussion, distant vocal samples and tactile electric pianos) and "Echoed Gehema", a tipsy chunk of enveloping deep house built around a shuffling but locked-in MPC style groove.

Review: Some 21 years on from the release of their much-loved debut album, Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are still going strong. The Temple of I & I is the Washington DC-based duo's eight studio full-length, and their first for three years. It features a wide range of guest vocalists, most seemingly drawn from the world of Caribbean sound system culture, and offers an extensive exploration of dub in its myriad forms. There are plenty of traditional-sounding workouts, along with a string of cuts that blend the duo's usual warm, hazy and bass-heavy sound with elements of hip-hop, easy listening and sensual modern soul.

Review: The Galaxy Sound Company continue their quest for the ultimate disco edit with this new mystery 12" by Starmachine. It's more house than disco this time, to be honest, but this EP makes for a fine crossover between the two genres, and will surely appeal to corresponding DJs. "As Long As I've Got You" is instantly recognisable for its famous Rhodes keys, while "Hands On 120 BPM" is a house chugger that samples Mulatu Astatke's most famous piece - essential tune! "Star Machine" swaggers from left to right with a sleek groove and sexy trumpets, while "Too Far 122 BPM" provides a glorious wail of vocals and house beats to tie this fabulous EP off in fine style.

Review: Following a series of self released albums over the past three years which saw them expand on hip hop classics with an auspicious level of jazz virtuosity, Canadian jazz trio Badbadnotgood grace the Innovative Leisure imprint with this enlightening collection III. Consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums, it's not hard to see why Badbadnotgood have been getting the usually hushed toned Gilles Peterson all exciting after a few listens of the nine tracks here. If you dug those cover versions you will love this album.

Review: Up until Peter Gordon's recent revival, excerpts from Arthur Russell's 1975 composition Instrumentals - inspired by his studies of Indian and western music while in San Francisco a few years previously - had only ever been performed in public on a handful of occasions. While this may have partly been due to the Russell's desire for it to be performed in a single 48-hour cycle, it has meant that the few recordings that do exist have remained hidden for decades. This superb double album gathers together those excerpts, recorded between 1974 and 78 in New York, alongside recordings of two other early Russell works. Musically, it's as strange, imaginative and touching as you'd expect, with Instrumentals variously fusing pastoral classical music, Indian mysticism, and (then) contemporary Americana.

Review: Chicago's Tony Rainwater delivers a great full length after impressive appearances on Hamburg's Lehult last year. The Rockberry Jam EP is actually his solo debut for the label and is a 'thick, crunchy concoction of sweet and sample-heavy grooves'. Each track was recorded live, according to the American artist, who claims that his production methods involved realtime sampling of his music collection via iTunes, alongside additional loops ripped from vinyl; also employing a spontaneous methodology. "The record is really like my record collection randomly coming together above a kick drum."

Review: Theo Conrad (better known for his work under the Paxton Fettel alias) has long been one of Greta Cottage Workshop's most intriguing artists. His first album for the Devon imprint, Everything Stays The Same, inhibited similar territory to the classic deep house/downtempo/soul/jazz fusion of fellow West Country dwellers The Rurals. Described by the label as "instrumental contemporary jazz-funk", Nothing Stays The Same sees Conrad combining loose jazz breaks and jazzy synths with the kind of rich grooves, fireside chords and dreamy electronics more often found in vintage deep house productions. It's a formula that results in a string of hugely impressive tracks.

Review: The seventh release for Parisian label Sampling As An Art comes courtesy of Atlanta's Byron The Aquarius with the Euphoria EP. If you checked Byron's prior 2016 releases for Sound Signature and Wild Oats, you'll know to expect a diverse range of styles all produced with consummate expertise and that's exactly what we have on the Euphoria EP. There's some dusty hip hop joints like on "Intro", Coming To Detroit" and "The Essence" but there's also some real proper deep house. Like when we get treated with the wonderful "The Love Below" which is reminiscent of Fresh 'N Low and the rather KDJ sounding collaboration with S3A "Nights In Tokyo".

Review: Ready for a strange soul sensation? Say hello to Henry Wu. After a smattering of outings on 22a and XVI, the Londoner jumps aboard Ho Tep with his first extensive extended document. "Don't Want The Regular" is a hazy twist on slo-mo broken beat, all dreamy and just the right amount of abstract. "Expensive Ghetto" takes the abstract even further with a jazz trumpet that wanders so free it's nearly off the page. "Black Rigsby" is more floor-focused as it looks towards the likes of Detroit with strange filtered synth wriggles and spacy overtones, "Just Negotiate" sits somewhere between Andrew Ashong and Amp Fiddler with its yearning lyrics and hugely enveloping synths and finally "Joint September" closes the show on a reflective jazzy note. Dreamy.

Review: It's been ten years since Italian percussionist Tommaso Capellato released his debut album, the relatively traditional jazz-funk opus Originals. Aforemention, his fourth full-length, is an altogether more cosmic affair. It sees Cappellato combine his own loose-limbed drum work with intergalactic synths, space age Rhodes solos, copious amounts of delay and reverb, and electronic elements borrowed from futurist techno. There are occasional nods to out-there modern soul and R&B, but for the most part it's a loose, languid and thoroughly intergalactic romp through the furthest reaches of the jazz galaxy. It also includes a sublime slice of psychedelic exotica in the shape of ambient cut "Gentle Glide".

These two Soul II Soul edits say it all... "Back To Life" gets a powerful tease on the pay-off while "African Dance" gets brand new drums and a whole new boogie section. Damaging.

Review: Polar Bear, the five-piece post-jazz outfit that has released golden material for almost fifteen years, are no strangers to a reissue or to, and in fact, their original work is rather difficult to come by these days. Luckily, labels such as Leaf have no problem in repressing their best stuff, and this is why we're treated with this utter gem of an album. Peepers is certainly regarded as one of the band's best moments, and it takes their experimental jazz edge to the very limit; the sounds are freer than free, and they are certainly for those of you who like their instruments played rough and tough.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.
