The World Is Yours: 15 Years Of Real Music For Real People

  1. The World Is Yours
  2. It's Simple
Review: 4 Hero don Mark Mac's side project Visioneers gets a worthy vinyl reissue as part of the 15 years of BBE celebrations with this limited edition 45. "The World Is Yours" is a take on the Nas classic which originally (in this version) came out in 2002 on the Omniverse label. The flipside "It's Simple" turned up on the Dirty Old Hip-Hop album for BBE four years later. The Omniverse label was highly collectable at the time, so this will be a welcome release for those who missed the original 45 or just love the 7 inch format. Both tracks are a sweet hip-hop tinged instrumental ride with nice keys and jazzy vibes. Hot!

Review: Amazingly, it's 25 years since George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn and then production partner Kevin 'Boy Wonder' Harper sat down and recorded "Dextrous", their monstrous, bleep-era classic on Warp. A quarter of a century later, Evelyn is still going strong, though the grooves have mellowed a lot in that time. Here, Warp celebrate the producer's epic career with a much-deserved retrospective. All the familiar favourites are present, from the rush-inducing thrill of early dancefloor smashers "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath", to the sinewy downtempo goodness of the decidedly Balearic "Les Nuits", the blazed hip-hop dub of "195 Llbs" and stoner soul of "70s 80s".

Review: Having delivered a seventh studio album of a long and productive career as Nightmares On Wax last year, George Evelyn has been treated to the full retrospective programme by Warp in 2014. Earlier this year the label issued a best of, artfully punned NOW Is The Time, this week has seen Warp reissue in deluxe format all of Evelyn's six previous and widely loved long players. All of them are in stock at Juno and worthy of your time, though Carboot Soul is a particular favourite amongst the review team here. The Quincy Jones sample on opener "La Nuit" never sounded so good!

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

  2. Bookaloo (5:59)
Review: Pick up a dictionary, look up 'curveball' and you'll find "Rich Prick Poor Dick". You won't... But you should. After his experimental soundscapery on his In The Wild album, FaltyDL has decided to go all-out on our tooshes with two rather disparate club cuts. The unforgettably titled lead track is a rampant, near-150BPM, techno slapper with heavy elements of psy trance thrown into the mix for good measure and strong flavour. "Bookaloo" plays the cheeky, trippy antidote. A much slower (but still beat-heavy) beat jam, it's bedazzled in an array of both melodic and rhythmic leads and counter leads. Now look up the word 'essential'.

Review: Although it has pretty much always been the case, it has to be said that Falty DL is absolutely on fire at the moment, and the New Yorker has been releasing bangers left, right and centre since the start of the year. This time, he takes a break from his own imprint and lands back on London's mighty Ninja Tune with a couple of bangers, all nice and deep, like. "Visceral" is a gentle garage hybrid running at a fast pace and blending all sorts of melodies into its shell, while "The Ah Track" verges onto housier territories. There is, of course, plenty of the man's own flair and manipulation at its core. As per usual, it's rocking gear for the floor.

  1. Analogous

  3. I Feel It In My Forehead
Review: Living up to his most recognised name with every release, LA producer Gifted & Blessed joins the Eglo family with a quite excellent EP under the lesser spotted Abstract Eye moniker. This name was last used by Reyes-Whittaker on the Cool Warm Divine EP for the Valentine Connexion imprint, a release that impressed the Juno review crew despite the fact the Abstract Eye identity was under wraps at the time. The rich analogue techno explorations dipped in glowering warmth and soul that ran through that release are present and correct on Whittaker's Eglo debut, especially the opening track "Analogous". Commencing with a neck snapping percussive flex, it doesn't take long for the track to get consumed by flourishes of rich analogue texture and undercurrents of fuzzed out bass. Alongside this "Grandfather Fire" floats in more pensive strains of machine made funk, gradually unfurling into intricately layered bursts of kaleidoscopic colour that retain a certain restraint throughout. Whittaker reserves the best till last however, with "I Feel It In My Forehead" making full space of the B Side expanse for a gloriously paced sojourn through sumptuous electronic soul.

Review: ** 2015 repress of the Eglo essential from the don Shepard ** Eglo quietly slip out a double dose of Floating Points whilst no one is looking and sit back and watch the whole world scramble for a copy. A double A Side release from Sam Shepherd which finally sees him release the all conquering "Marilyn" - this is a track that's been dropped by thems in the know for a while now and is reason enough to indulge in this finely presented twelve inch. If your ears have not been graced by the sumptuous Dam Funk meets Theo bump of this track then you are in for a late week treat - beatdown future boogie of the highest order! Serving further notice of Floating Points' envious talent for arrangements ""Farukx"" echoes his recent Ensemble deviations, though the orchestral arrangements are complemented by delicately stuttering drums and an underlying bed of ethereal bliss which together proves to be quite captivating.

Review: UK legend Dego and killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham have been in a rich vein of form of late, dropping brilliant EPs on Eglo, Sound Signature and Rush Hour (the latter under their 2000Black alias). Here, they return to Eglo with four more slices of warm, rich, soul-flecked fluidity. As with previous outings, much of the material has a laidback jazz-funk feel, particularly "Orbiting Uhara" and the delicious "The Vault Descends" (think bustling bruk rhythms and darting boogie synths). They also offer up some tougher, synth-laden bruk-funk in the shape of "Man Made", while "Black Is Key" sees them unfurl a head-nodding vocal roller.

Review: Afro/Latin/tropical fusionists The Souljazz Orchestra have long established themselves as one of the most incendiary live acts on the circuits, reinforcing this rising reputation with a string of fine albums. Here, they deliver their seventh full-length, adding notable French Caribbean and Francophone West African into their already distinctive musical melting pot. Predictably, the results are impressive, with the Ottawa-based sextet effortlessly flitting between humid, Afro-Cuban workouts ("Ware Wa"), Hammond-heavy dancefloor freak-outs ("Bull's Eye"), slick soul sing-alongs ("As The World Turns"), and highly politicized Afrobeat jams ("Greet The Dawn", "Shock & Awe"). As usual, it's all impeccably played and produced, resulting in another killer dose of cross-cultural dancefloor fusion.

Review: Premiership fusionistas Souljazz Orchestra build on their inner fire with their seventh artist album. Marking 10 years since their debut Uprooted, Resistance reminds us of the band's incredible energy, tightness and latent funk in every note they play. Highlights can be found on every track but it's moments like the scat/percussive play off on "Shock & Awe", the feel-good chords and breakdown on "Bull's Eye" and the cowbell driven rhythmic switch on "Ware Wa" that really sparkle and compound the band's longstanding power. No other band of this nature have remained so tight and so consistent for so long. Resisting Resistance is futile.

Review: Given that this is the first album from the great Theo Parrish since 2007, it's unsurprising interest in American Intelligence has rocketed over the course of the year as Sound Signature left a trail of hints. Happily, American Intelligence is a fine album; deep and woozy in parts, undeniably soulful, shot through with jazz influences and full to bursting with killer cuts. By now, everyone should know the brilliant "Footwork" single (arguably one of the records of 2014); soon, clubs will swing to the off-kilter dancefloor jazz of "Make No War", the 21st century broken house of the epic "Fallen Funk" and the decidedly odd - but brilliant - "Helmut Lampshade".

Both were recorded in one take live direct to disc (a system which bypasses the use of magnetic tape) and features Will Quantic's band Combo Barbaro, including musicians from Peru and Columbia flown over to UK especially for the recording. Both releases are simply outstanding, with Alice Russell's vocals soaring in places and gentle in others. Collectable and, quite simply, essential.

Review: Young Turks clearly believe that Tahlilah Barnett, formerly known as Twigs (hence the FKA Twigs pseudonym) is a star in the making. They plucked her from obscurity last year and have since released a number of highly regarded singles. This debut album expands on her EPs to date, showcasing her woozy, intricate take on post-R&B. Naturally, her vocals - fragile and evocative, sounding not unlike Kate Bush on occasions - take centre stage, riding a bed of layered-up head-nodding rhythms, post dubstep grooves, trip-hop soundscapes, fizzing electronics and bubbling synthesizers. It's an intoxicating brew, all told, and one that delivers further proof of Barnett's immense potential.

Review: Emotional Rescue starts 2016 digging deep in to the early 80s Bristol post punk scene of Pig Pag, the Wild Bunch and the Dug Out club. A short lived project of just 3 releases, Mouth trail-blazed leftfield percussive jams in the rich vain of Liquid Liquid and ESG but in their own jazz-infused way. Centered round the cultural melting post of the St Paul's district, it's pubs, clubs and blues parties threw together young and old to the sounds of dub, funk, jazz and soul and took the spark lit by punk rock and new wave and spawned music that still resonates today. Here then, on one EP are their complete recordings, including as the title cut, their best and deepest, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Featured on a compilation LP from the legendary Y Records, its bottom heavy dub sound is augmented by female and toasted vocals riding a top a heavy stepper style riddim. This is followed by an increasingly dizzy array of percussion jams. Acab (Part 2) is all skips and trumpets, while the versions of Take Your Coat Off perfect skat vocal / tom interplay, before the finale busts out the rockabilly influences in full effect with jagged guitar, skipping hats meets double bass punk style.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Review: Hyperdub mainstays LV - Si Williams and Will Horrock - step on Gilles Peterson's Browswood consortium for the first time, bringing through their sophomore album, a mesmerising journey through deep electronic jungles coated in a jazzy atmospheres. Out of the 14 tracks, this leviathan of a release explores pretty much everything there is to explore within the nu jazz circuit, and we particularly love when the duo blend soulful piano keys together with slow-burning electronic beats, such as on "Ruiselede", or "Quick Return". There's also plenty of stepping sci-fi beat science in the form of tunes like "Transition", "Broken Movement", and "Balance Spring". The LP can be enjoyed both as a mood piece, and as a deep listening experience; whichever suits you best.

Review: Gerardo's first new material since last year's album Movement, the "Olympia" EP sees the Milano musician return to his club roots with five of his most floor-focused cuts. From the Shiffrin-style guitars and Jorge Ben licks of the dramatic cinematic title track we head deep into the dance by way of the cadent Latin soul of "Tin Tin Deo", the Hammond-squeezing "Talking Sticks" and the percussion-primed heads-down Arabic charms of "East Breeze". We climax with "The Obsession", a thumping drum-focussed samba number that tips a big nod to the likes of Master At Work.

Review: Italian twosome Alessandro Trebo and Andrea Benini are virtual veterans, having released their debut album under the Mop Mop alias way back in 2005. Here, they deliver their first new studio set in three years, serving up a warm, rich and evocative set rooted in their usual blend of nu-jazz, reggae, hip-hop, Latin beats and hazy downtempo grooves. The expansive credits reveal just how many live session players were involved (think marimbas, glockenspiel, steel drums, kalimba, modular synthesizers, double bass and a variety of pianos), while beat poet Anthony Joseph adds his distinctive spoken word vocals to a number of tracks. The result is an enjoyable and entertaining set that offers a good balance between stoned, late night explorations and more densely layered compositions.

Review: The first fresh material to appear ahead of their long-awaited second album, it's clear ROJ are still tighter than mosquitos tweeter and thrice as funky with this pant-blazing Aspects collaboration. A slick car chase groove, garnished by equally firing lyrics, it's a great come-back single. Each remix kills it, too; Skeewiff does what he does best on a classic 60s swing flex, Smoove goes loco with a Bassey vocal shot and Caiden get freaky on an electro boogie vibe. Some fires don't need putting out... Feel the heat.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Concepts for the annual Record Store Day don't get better than this. Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau and Kidkanevil were invited to Mr Thing's gaff and explore his sizeable vinyl collection. They could sample anything they wished... But, as the title says, no vinyl could leave his house. The result is four examples of pure sample artistry. Eric Lau's "Chop For Mr Thing" takes a Latin strummer and stretches out its harmony over a nagging beats with really cool edits and space. Kidkanevil opts for a sludgier hip-hop approach where one simple loop opens and closes at different spaces over a nod-heavy beat. Elsewhere Tall Black Guy gets dreamy with a tripped out vocal sample and some stunning slippery bass action while Mr Thing provides the best schooling with a classic Dilla style loop that twists the full emphasis on one vocal cry and a weave of classic hip-hop cuts.

Review: Soulist and Fulgeance's Souleance project delivers a 12" of album proportions. As ever, it's every bit as funky as you'd expect it to be. At points it's a steamy, emotional, come-to-bed affair thanks to the sultry keys and vibrating bass of "Hustle" and the hip-shaking slinky lo-fi samba of "Secoue". At other points it's aimed directly at the dance with the high energy disco boogie rattles of "Tartare" and big filtered house struts of "Ratatouille". At all points it's pristinely produced and coated in a Latin soul that Soulist and Fulgeance have made their own. Complete with remixes from Debruits and Uffe and this beyond album proportions.

Review: Ed Cawthorne goes by the name of Tenderlonious when he's in the mood to make dusty, sample-laced house with a soulful edge. The dude has previously released on London's 22a, and also Sounds Of The Universe's own imprint, but he's back and he's landed on Osunlade's Yoruba Records, releasing choice house magic since 1999. There's six tracks on offer here, and they're all as magical as you'd expect from the shady Tenderlonious; it's a mix of funky house and neo tribalism, just like Osunlade likes in his sets. We're loving the jazzy Latin percussions of "Sula", the flute-driven mind-bender that is "Mind That Window", and the daring, Rhodes-driven beauty in the name of "Without You".

Review: Once upon a time, this kind of gathering of broken beat and nu-jazz masters - not to mention the stellar cast list of guest instrumentalists and vocalists - would have caused major ripples. As it is, Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks will probably fall through the cracks. That would be a crying shame, because it's actually pretty tasty. Soulful, deep, jazz-flecked and brilliantly produced, it sounds like a long lost collaboration between IG Culture, Herbie Hancock and Bugz In The Attic (unsurprising since it features many Bugz collaborators and members, from Mark De Clive-Lowe and Bembe Segue, to Mark Force and, of course, Kaidi Tatham). Highlights are plentiful, from the liquid funk of "Mr Pickles", to the sweet modern soul of "Get Up, Lift Up", via the floor-friendly pulse of "Kenny".
