Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

  3. DB.Source - "Anapo" (5:24)
  4. DB.Source - "Ciane" (GG Records Trance mix) (7:55)
Review: The Gravity Graffiti label is fast establishing itself as an outpost for uncompromisingly strange records, and that's just fine with us. After the wonderful slouching boogie of the Soichi Terada / Whodamanny split 12", this time they've called upon none-stranger Japanese maverick Yoshinori Hayashi to turn out an A side that veers from free jazz esoterics to the best kind of mutant rave throwback imaginable. On the flip side DB.Source gets into a delightful tropical melee on "Anapo" before "Ciane (GG Records Trance Mix)" sends the release off into an exotic wilderness. This is the kind of record you wouldn't be able to imagine before you heard it, making it a perfect addition to the Gravity Graffiti canon.

  3. Snow Globe (5:16)
  4. Zozi Theme (5:47)
Review: In truth, most of 1080p's vinyl releases have extolled the virtues of a Mellow Vibe, though few have been quite as dreamy and picturesque as this debut EP from Sophie Sweetland's new DJ Zozi alias. While each of the four tracks makes its' dancefloor intentions clear, it's the typically Canadian dreaminess of the accompanying chords, melodies and textures that catches the ear. Throughout, there are plenty of nods to early British hardcore breakbeat (see the cheeky "Zozi Theme" and "Up (Slammin Vers)"), as well as early 808 State ("Mellow Vibe") and bouncy, cut-up deep house (the hugely enjoyable "Snow Globe"). As you'd expect from both producer and label, the whole thing is vibrant, colourful and decidedly loved-up

  5. Music For Advertising (3:41)
Review: Cucumb45 is a new pseudonym from Bjarki, a fearlessly forthright producer who already boasts a shed-full of alternative aliases. Something Weirdcore is predictably bizarre and off-the-wall, but also really rather good. The five tracks offer a whistle-stop tour of some of his influences, from the late '90s, trip-hop era Ninja Tune bounce of "Music For Advertising" and electrofunk-goes-braindance business of "14 Comstack 3", to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink hardcore/house mash-up madness of "[Karate Latte Heep Mix 4]". Arguably best of all, though, is "Something Weirdcore4", a pirate-radio friendly trip into warped '93 jungle territory with bleep techno style sub-bass and sampled children's voices. In two words: delightfully bonkers.

  4. Rasputin (Mak & Pasteman remix) (7:06)
Review: The latest recruit to the Dext Recordings cause is Otik, a producer who recently impressed via a solid outing on Bristol-based Durkle Disco. The real killer here is title track "Deep Red", a deliciously percussive workout built around a superb broken beat style rhythm track, spacey chords and weighty sub-bass. It's given the remix treatment by Erosion Flow, whose dirty remix is propelled forward at a rate of knots thanks to some thumping techno beats and ragged acid lines. Speaking of techno, bonus cut "Rasputin" sees Otik wander towards the kind of dirty, post-dubstep techno territory once inhibited by Peverlist. Mak and Pasteman's remix feels like an intergalactic update of Jaydee classic "Plastic Dreams".

  3. Pensively (5:49)
Review: Vlad Gavrilov is only new to the scene, but the music that he makes under the DJ Heure moniker will gain traction among house heads in no time. His debut EP for Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii set the scene for what will surely become a constant slew of quality house releases from the young producer, and this follow-up EP for Sex Wildblood's newly crowned All My Thoughts imprint has all the makings of an instant hit. "Outsider Resource" is a magnificent slice of jungle-filtered house music, wavy and loose in all the right places, and exactly the sort of wayward dance music that the UK should be all about. On the flip, "Some Time Still" is a straighter affair; backed by a more traditional house groove, that is, but the sounds chosen are still very much of the hazy category, whereas "Pensively" adds in a little jazz sensibility by launching a heavy, beat-centric house groover with a solid punch. Heavy.

Review: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

  1. High Hill (7:36)
  2. The Spirit (7:24)
Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

Review: It's 30 years since Bomb The Bass gate crashed the UK singles chart with "Beat Dis", a seminal fusion of hip-hop sample culture, New York Freestyle grooves and Chicago house traits. To celebrate, Cherry Red has decided to reissue the outfit's 1988 debut album, Into The Dragon. Amazingly, the album has aged very well, and the production duo's cut-and-paste blends of heavy hip-hop breakbeats, electrofunk rhythms, cheeky melodic lifts (John Carpenter's "Escape From Precinct 13" gets the going over on "Megablast"), house references and early UK rap are still capable of raising the temperature on the dancefloor. The reissue also includes a number of tasty period remixes and bonus cuts, of which the original rap version of "Megablast" stands out.
