  4. 14 Comatack 3 (3:33)
  5. Music For Advertising (3:41)
Review: Cucumb45 is a new pseudonym from Bjarki, a fearlessly forthright producer who already boasts a shed-full of alternative aliases. Something Weirdcore is predictably bizarre and off-the-wall, but also really rather good. The five tracks offer a whistle-stop tour of some of his influences, from the late '90s, trip-hop era Ninja Tune bounce of "Music For Advertising" and electrofunk-goes-braindance business of "14 Comstack 3", to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink hardcore/house mash-up madness of "[Karate Latte Heep Mix 4]". Arguably best of all, though, is "Something Weirdcore4", a pirate-radio friendly trip into warped '93 jungle territory with bleep techno style sub-bass and sampled children's voices. In two words: delightfully bonkers.

High Hill (12")
Cat: WHITELOOPS 3. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. High Hill (7:36)
  2. The Spirit (7:24)
Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

Remember Me EP (12" repress)
Cat: EBEAMZ 003. Rel: 17 Apr 17
  1. Lost (5:00)
  2. One's N Two's (4:13)
  3. Get Lit (4:42)
Review: Joining DJ Relationship Goals, DJ Longdick, DJ Windows XP, DJ Playstation and DJ Boring on the recently-ignited, insatiably burning E-Beamz imprint, DJ Swagger lays down an all-corner-covering fusion session the flips mischievously from thumping house jam "Lost" to the sci-fi b-boy broken jam "Ones N Twos" at the flick of switch. "Get Lit" joins the dots between the two in true lo-fi glory as a weirded out vocal loop grumbles beneath a series of clunky filtered layers that open out majestically as the track progresses. Beam us up Swagger.

  2. Grand Mothers Funck - "The Dog" (Throw Me A Bone mix) (3:16)
  3. Nasa Funk - "Stand Up" (3:36)
  4. A Man About A Dog - "Pollos" (3:23)
Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

Square Sun/Anapo (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GRA 003 . Rel: 20 Mar 17
  1. Yoshinori Hayashi - "Square Sun" (10:58)
  2. Yoshinori Hayashi - "Cooling" (8:17)
  3. DB.Source - "Anapo" (5:24)
  4. DB.Source - "Ciane" (GG Records Trance mix) (7:55)
Review: The Gravity Graffiti label is fast establishing itself as an outpost for uncompromisingly strange records, and that's just fine with us. After the wonderful slouching boogie of the Soichi Terada / Whodamanny split 12", this time they've called upon none-stranger Japanese maverick Yoshinori Hayashi to turn out an A side that veers from free jazz esoterics to the best kind of mutant rave throwback imaginable. On the flip side DB.Source gets into a delightful tropical melee on "Anapo" before "Ciane (GG Records Trance Mix)" sends the release off into an exotic wilderness. This is the kind of record you wouldn't be able to imagine before you heard it, making it a perfect addition to the Gravity Graffiti canon.

  1. D.a.t (5:25)
  2. Save Lite (4:26)
  3. Rexperiance (6:07)
Review: The Canoe label comes to life with some rough and ready cuts for the wilder kind of dance, courtesy of Nyra's gritty studio approach. Having previously been found on the likes of Never Learnt, Elastic Dreams and more besides, there's no doubt the plucky producer has experience in the field, and the diversity of the styles on CANOE 001 is testament to that. "D.a.t" is a stripped down machine workout that keeps things punchy and urgent throughout. "Save Lite" meanwhile is a wound-up, bleepy techno number with soul, and then "Rexperiance" aims for the rave jugular with a stab-tastic lead and some crunchy breaks.

  1. Boost The Whip (I-95 mix) (7:01)
Review: Bumping ghetto house with a strong twang of mid 90s rawness, POI hits hard once again with this grainy roller. Drenched in dense pads, cries and chimes but arranged with more than enough space and pace for the industrial strength b-boy breakbeats to cut through, this can crossover into any set from any direction. Highly limited, too.
