Gone Too Soon EP (12" repress)
Cat: SNKR 008. Rel: 26 Dec 16
  1. Limit Of Paradise (5:16)
  2. Snake Charmer (6:27)
  3. Gone Too Soon (5:55)
  4. Zero Fifteen (6:20)
Review: Rave legends 2 Bad Mice return with their first release since 2004 and suddenly the world doesn't feel like quite such a bleak place. Naturally we're treated to the full spectrum from running man, heads-down rolling breaks ("Snake Charmer") to the absolute, unabashed piano heaven and hands-in-the-air euphoria of the title track. With the classic loose drum rolls and dubby subs of "Zero Fifteen" and the stretched out drum trippery of "Limit Of Paradise" completing the set, it's a welcome (and highly timely) return for one of rave music's most influential collectives.

Review: Hot on the heels of "Super Jam" is "Rec", on the Fun Weapons label, a mid-tempo juiced track that All Good Funk Alliance is famous for. The track fuses dancehall-like vocals with darker edged beats, horns and bass. The Ancient Astronauts (Switchstance) drop a more relaxed remix.

  3. Queue A (5:24)
  4. 22:22 (5:54)
Review: Italy's Andrea is now a trusted member of the Ilian Tape collective, having only released for the German label thus far. But, why would he go elsewhere? These guys are on fire, and releasing some of the most interesting shades of industrial 4/4 these days. This is his fourth EP for the throng, and "Floating" starts off with a beatless, wide-eyed landscape of soft pads to introduce the twisted, shifting, break-driven tech of "Timed". "Queue A", on the flip of the disc, is a driving pile of rusty kick drums and oceanic pads that head into the deeper end of the techno sphere, while "22:22" goes all-out on the jungle patterns with its broken groove that recalls the likes of LTJ Bukem or Dego at their more pacy moods. A killer of an EP!

  4. The Night Is Mine (Funkanomics remix)
Review: Emerging German funksters CMC & Silenta bag themselves a team of iron-lipped vocalists for their most accomplished single to date. Both "The Night Is Mine" and "Big Up Booty" bounce with a distinct Freestylers or Deekline & Solo twang - unashamed big room beats coated in chants and sing-along potential. The remixes aren't too shabby either: DJ AKA chunks and chops it while Funkanomics flops his slap bass out. Serious party starters.

Review: Those who missed out on the third volume of Jazzy Sport's Japanese CD only compilation Pound For Pound can take solace in this special 7" that draws some fresh produce from the release. Strictly for the nimble fingered selectors only! Fans of the label will need no introduction to the Cro Magnon trio of Shigekazu Otake, Tsuyoshi Kosuga and Takumi Kaneko and "QP Funk" finds them collaborating with hip hop DJ and producer DJ JIN on a fantastic funk fusion. Breaks fanatics will be all over the flip side vinyl only version "QP Funk (drums)" which lows the organs and lets Shigekazu Otake's drumming take centre stage.

  3. Pressing Matters (Robag Pinvoldex Sull NB) (7:43)
  4. Push (feat Tanaya Harper) (5:51)
Review: Irish tape throb enthusiast The Cyclist adds Bristol house bastions Hypercolour to his discography with this fine four-track 12", Pressing Matters, which features a remix from Pampa and Kompakt legend Robag Wruhme! The title track is a fine example of The Cyclist's warped charm, conjuring bendy bass lines, faltering breakbeats and wavy synth lines over seven delightfully heat-treated minutes. The Robag Wruhme is just as epic, sounding like a lost breakbeat artefact dug up for gleeful 21st century consumption. "Born In '92" adds plenty of pirate radio chatter into it's deep and spectral house bump, whilst Tanaya Harper's vocals lend a palpable edge to the brittle garage swing of closer "Push."

  4. Don't Play Around (acappella)
Review: Nu Mark's been teasing his fans since May, releasing selected cuts from his new album Broken Sunlight in coloured vinyl 10" instalments. With the attention reaching fever pitch, he's unleashed one of the biggest cuts on the LP. Hooking up with the dollar-hungry Aloe Blacc, it's a horn-heaving slice of hip-hop funk that pushes all the right buttons. "Tough Break" is a double-time deal sealer. With more horns and a frenetic rhythm, it's Nu Mark at his very best. Essential.

  3. Get Lit (4:42)
Review: Joining DJ Relationship Goals, DJ Longdick, DJ Windows XP, DJ Playstation and DJ Boring on the recently-ignited, insatiably burning E-Beamz imprint, DJ Swagger lays down an all-corner-covering fusion session the flips mischievously from thumping house jam "Lost" to the sci-fi b-boy broken jam "Ones N Twos" at the flick of switch. "Get Lit" joins the dots between the two in true lo-fi glory as a weirded out vocal loop grumbles beneath a series of clunky filtered layers that open out majestically as the track progresses. Beam us up Swagger.

Review: Four furiously funky floor-busters from Aussie nu-funkateer Tom Drummond, each of these well-executed hip-hop-minded bootlegs guarantees a raucous reaction. "Thick Shake" takes the Nate Dogg vocals from Eminem's "Shake That" and fuses them with classic Zapp & Rogers funk flavour while "Work It" takes UNK's "Walk It Out" and introduces it to a bouncy soft-skank riddim with horns galore. Elsewhere we find Marlena Shaw getting a big beat style facelift on "Ghetto Blaster" while "Satisfaction" smelts Benny Benassi with Rolling Stones and plenty more.

Review: It's been a while since we last enjoyed an acid house handshake with the Frothy one but it's been worth the wait as "D.O.C" sees him returning with four rusty, rambunctious analogue constructions that work in all corners from techno to dub. "HR22" is a clattering ghetto-bound tech funk jam, "Joint Loose" breezes with his native Balearic charm, "DOCs" pays homage to the SUAD-side of our hardcore heritage while his own remix of his previous WNCL EP opener "A Broad Range" makes sense of his fuming cauldron spirit with an air of Vibert acid.

  3. Mackin' (6:49)
  4. Cide (5:35)
Review: Having made his 777 debut on the killer C'est La Vii compilation the label released a few months back, Futers now returns to helm the latest 12" from Ron 'the Wrecker' Wilson's Berlin operation. With little info out there on the artist beyond a SoundCloud page and Twitter account let's focus on the cuts, with Mr Futers laying down a booming, broken techno cut in titular EP opener "U Get Me" that will appeal to fans of Ilian Tape, though it's all washed down with some particularly emotive pads. It's quite the opening statement and Futers proceeds to show his versatility as a producer, veering off into acid breakbeat territory on "Slamming" (which features some right tasty record scratching) and similarly grin-inducing retro-vibes abound on the rough edged hip house business of "Mackin'". Closer "Cide" ends a fine 12" on a more serene note, with Futers easing out some bottom heavy ambient electronics reminiscent of Funki Porcini.

  4. Matrix Wave (4:44)
Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

Review: Jerome Hill's returns to his funkiest guise Itsu Uno for the first time in several years with this epic slice of sample madness. "The Riff" couldn't possibly be any funkier as we boom bap with vigour to a cut and paste narrative of heady homages. Han Do Jin jumps up on the B... We're unsure on HDJ's identity right now but the fusion of flavours he's cooked surpasses any traces of mystery; when early hardcore, acid house and Cuban horns are smelted as well as this, the name is superfluous. Get down.

Review: Strange happenings are going on down at Scrutton Street, EC1. With release after release
cementing the names of those based or working out of the studio bunker, a desire for
pushing the boundaries of electronic music is primary with little concern for what's hip.
So if anyone can Tim can and here with his newly birthed pseudonym comes Junior Fairplay.
With a one-sided release and remix to his name on Crimes Of The Future a glimpse has been
offered of what's in store, but How Do You Like Me Now? gives it straight.
Pioneering and back to the British techno of early Black Dog, Reload, Stasis and of course,
the seminal "Selected Works" clearly inspires, but so too does one of those musical moments
where genres clash, tear and stretch as something new is being born.
It all starts with the uplifting House anthem of Classic Version, eschewing the oft-tasted
horror stylings and aims direct for that 4am MDMA airfild rush, before the EP drops, locks
and spins on it's axis, with 3 pure breaks cuts to overload the senses and say, now is the time!
A voyage to another side to the mythical lost chord via a moment in time where open filds,
abandoned warehouses, the kick of 4/4 house, hip hop breaks and the dub of sound system
culture merged but for a short while. Not house, not rave or jungle. A proto sound born of
blood, sweat and Rage.

Review: Firecracker's impeccable UNTHANK series continues, with boss man Lindsay Todd securing a first collaborative EP from Lemme Kno, a surprise hook-up between Maxmillion Dunbar and Rush Hour 'No Label' alumnus Morgan 'DJ Isle O'Man' Buckley. "The Tie With The Most Stripes" provides an excellent opening, with the duo exploring their shared love of instrumental hip-hop, Luke Vibert and sparkling dancefloor electronics. "Way (188 Krew Mix)" continues in a similar vein (think vintage Kenny Dope-style Jeep beats and samples meets lo-fi synths), before they reach for the jugular on standout cut "1234567". Built around early hardcore style breakbeats, loved-up chord sweeps, new age synthesizers and bleep melodies, the track harnesses both the musical zeitgeist, and each producer's distinctive talents.
