Review: Hot on the heels of "Super Jam" is "Rec", on the Fun Weapons label, a mid-tempo juiced track that All Good Funk Alliance is famous for. The track fuses dancehall-like vocals with darker edged beats, horns and bass. The Ancient Astronauts (Switchstance) drop a more relaxed remix.

  4. The Blapps Posse - "Do What U Want To Do"
  5. The Dynamic Guv'Nors - "These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"
Review: Well ahead of their time, The Blapps Posse cut some of the most agenda-setting records during the late 80s and early 90s. Gnawing and slapping their way through hip-hop, funk, hardcore and acid house, they made the records that soundtracked those early halcyon summers of love. This selection of cuts gathers the crews various guises and off-shoots and comprises the broadest of their abilities; from innocent formative hip-house ("Don't Hold Back"), sample-smashing seminal big beat ("Religious B-Boy") and bleep-style rave hopscotch ("These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"). Unearthed by Fat Hop champ Jerome Hill and remastered to stand up to today, this is a bona fide document.

Review: Since establishing the illicit My Rules imprint earlier this year, New Yorker Justin Vangdervolgen has used it to deliver a mixture of sneaky edits, hush-hush remixes and sly, sample heavy original productions. "Sketch 2" is towards the rougher end of Vandervolgen's output, and sees the former !!! man laying down some seriously tough, twisted beats, jagged analogue motifs, bleeping melodies and mind-altering acid lines. It sounds like the sort of sweaty machine jam that will get dancefloors in a frenzy of flailing arms and legs. It has a kind of EBM-meets-techno feel, but at a house tempo. Either way, it's something of a breathless banger.

Review: Emerging German funksters CMC & Silenta bag themselves a team of iron-lipped vocalists for their most accomplished single to date. Both "The Night Is Mine" and "Big Up Booty" bounce with a distinct Freestylers or Deekline & Solo twang - unashamed big room beats coated in chants and sing-along potential. The remixes aren't too shabby either: DJ AKA chunks and chops it while Funkanomics flops his slap bass out. Serious party starters.

Review: Those who missed out on the third volume of Jazzy Sport's Japanese CD only compilation Pound For Pound can take solace in this special 7" that draws some fresh produce from the release. Strictly for the nimble fingered selectors only! Fans of the label will need no introduction to the Cro Magnon trio of Shigekazu Otake, Tsuyoshi Kosuga and Takumi Kaneko and "QP Funk" finds them collaborating with hip hop DJ and producer DJ JIN on a fantastic funk fusion. Breaks fanatics will be all over the flip side vinyl only version "QP Funk (drums)" which lows the organs and lets Shigekazu Otake's drumming take centre stage.

Review: Nu Mark's been teasing his fans since May, releasing selected cuts from his new album Broken Sunlight in coloured vinyl 10" instalments. With the attention reaching fever pitch, he's unleashed one of the biggest cuts on the LP. Hooking up with the dollar-hungry Aloe Blacc, it's a horn-heaving slice of hip-hop funk that pushes all the right buttons. "Tough Break" is a double-time deal sealer. With more horns and a frenetic rhythm, it's Nu Mark at his very best. Essential.

Review: Four furiously funky floor-busters from Aussie nu-funkateer Tom Drummond, each of these well-executed hip-hop-minded bootlegs guarantees a raucous reaction. "Thick Shake" takes the Nate Dogg vocals from Eminem's "Shake That" and fuses them with classic Zapp & Rogers funk flavour while "Work It" takes UNK's "Walk It Out" and introduces it to a bouncy soft-skank riddim with horns galore. Elsewhere we find Marlena Shaw getting a big beat style facelift on "Ghetto Blaster" while "Satisfaction" smelts Benny Benassi with Rolling Stones and plenty more.

  4. Pushin' Forward (DJ Alias & Benson remix)
Review: After firmly establishing their Nu Funk steez in the digital realm with countless releases, London label Boogie Boutique reach into the glamorous world of vinyl in fine style with this double 12" drop A Year On Wax. They continue their twelve inch shaped adventures with a label regular at the helm in the shape of Funk Ferret. The New Zealander has featured on many a Boogie Boutique release, as well as other Nu Funk labels such as Booty Pirates and Ghetto Funk, so keen observers of the scene will know what to expect. "Pushin' Forward" features the mic spitting skills of Imagine This, whose Mr Lif style delivery is the perfect foil for a trademark mid tempo bass heavy bump from the Ferret. Boogie Boutique have assembled a fine cast of remix talent too, with Big Beat veteran Cut La Roc dropping a fine sample heavy revision that allows the vox to shine. Fellow BB artist and Montreal dweller Nick Fonkyson adds some crunchy riffage to the mix, whilst the Funk Ferret's Regrooved Sound System partner DJ Alias concentrates on teasing out some bassline deviancy with some help from Benson.

Review: The mysterious Itinerant Dub outfit return with their third outing of raw machine music taking inspiration from classic jungle, dub, techno and grime. Those who have heard the first two records will know that Itinerant Dub have been responsible for some of the most essential music from the bass axis this year, and this third EP caps off their year in style. "Ur My ID" comes split into two parts, the first all rolling subs and whip crack snares with rusty delay trails taking the form of some kind of primitive UK funky, while the second takes a more frantic approach, with wobbling synth textures propelling some seriously hardcore vibes. Finally, "One Step" goes in a more explicit steppas direction, with something that sounds like Kahn & Neek's Gorgon Sound project filtered through subtle layers of tape hiss and distortion.

Review: Jerome Hill's returns to his funkiest guise Itsu Uno for the first time in several years with this epic slice of sample madness. "The Riff" couldn't possibly be any funkier as we boom bap with vigour to a cut and paste narrative of heady homages. Han Do Jin jumps up on the B... We're unsure on HDJ's identity right now but the fusion of flavours he's cooked surpasses any traces of mystery; when early hardcore, acid house and Cuban horns are smelted as well as this, the name is superfluous. Get down.

Review: Strange happenings are going on down at Scrutton Street, EC1. With release after release
cementing the names of those based or working out of the studio bunker, a desire for
pushing the boundaries of electronic music is primary with little concern for what's hip.
So if anyone can Tim can and here with his newly birthed pseudonym comes Junior Fairplay.
With a one-sided release and remix to his name on Crimes Of The Future a glimpse has been
offered of what's in store, but How Do You Like Me Now? gives it straight.
Pioneering and back to the British techno of early Black Dog, Reload, Stasis and of course,
the seminal "Selected Works" clearly inspires, but so too does one of those musical moments
where genres clash, tear and stretch as something new is being born.
It all starts with the uplifting House anthem of Classic Version, eschewing the oft-tasted
horror stylings and aims direct for that 4am MDMA airfild rush, before the EP drops, locks
and spins on it's axis, with 3 pure breaks cuts to overload the senses and say, now is the time!
A voyage to another side to the mythical lost chord via a moment in time where open filds,
abandoned warehouses, the kick of 4/4 house, hip hop breaks and the dub of sound system
culture merged but for a short while. Not house, not rave or jungle. A proto sound born of
blood, sweat and Rage.

Review: Given the success of their first vinyl excursion - a selection of tracks from Project Pablo's brilliant I Want To Believe cassette - it was almost inevitable that Vancouver's 1080p would deliver more goodness on wax. This second EP comes from Max McFerren. The 12" hits hard from the off, with "Sipps" delivering an attractive blend of tough drum machine rhythms, early '90s intelligent techno riffs and cut-up soul vocal samples. "Der Funke" sits somewhere between this and classic ambient house, while "Yer Bad Sister" is a thrilling blend of house-tempo hardcore-era breakbeats, winding electronics and baggy synthesizer riffs. He repeats the trick on "Hard To Say", which sounds like a toned down take on early Squarepusher, after a night inhaling Jamaican strength smoke.

"Chinchillas" takes Snoop to the disco, "Cele-FUNK-Tion" stomps with walloping 80s boogie flavour. "Ready Ready" gets Dizzee and spins with vibrant jazz funk fusion. "Party Time" finishes the set with Rick James/Bootsy style groove garnished in a healthy sprinkle of ragga. Lovely.

"The Turnaround" sees Mr Confuse turning his slap-happy focus to the bongos as a conga rattles hard beneath another insistent key-line. Essential modern funk.

  1. LaLaLa (original mix)
  2. LaLaLa (Funkanomics remix)
  3. LaLaLa (DJ Alias remix)
  4. LaLaLa (Will Styles remix)
Review: Breaks and hip-hop producer Ninelives The Cat comes through with a nagging slice of solid production and catchy vocals in the form of "LaLaLa". The chorus hook will claw into your head like the feline in control, while the choppy funk licks that make up the beat will find a comfortable home on dancefloors all over. On the remix tip, Funkanomics bring an uptempo 80s flavour with filtered guitars and brash drum machine beats, while DJ Alias does a more subtle turn in tightening up the groove of the original. Will Styles rounds things off with an electro-indebted workout full of chunky synths and club-ready construction.

  1. Gangster's Rock (feat Blade)
  2. Break It Down (feat Hanzee)
  3. Istambool
  4. La Petit P
Review: Swinging, bass-bitten, glitch-ridden funk ahoy! Nynfus Corporation return with four stellar party pieces that are likely to garner you all manner of proposals at your next gig. Seriously; one member of the Juno staff played "Gangster's Rock" in a bar last Friday and he's now married to three beautiful women. It's best not to dwell on the legalities of such a saga and just focus on the music; "Gangster's Rock" is precision glitch-hop at its finest, complete with a real block-rocking sing-along chorus, "Break It Down" is a more upbeat peaktime number with Hanzee spitting lyrics so quickly they'll make you dizzy. "Istambool" flips the switch for a swashbuckling low-swung horn-heaver while "La Petit P" ends the set with wonky warped bass and a fantastic sample that you will not 'regret' playing.

  2. You Are Me
Review: With two critically acclaimed albums to his name, Omid 16B is in the midst of creating a third! And whilst we await fulfillment through its fruits, here are two new prized productions providing a sweet taster of his forthcoming project. Omid's 'Psco' is an atmospheric, breaks driven beauty that seems to create its own impetus, soaring, swirling and dipping as freely as a bird in flight. An immense masterpiece sculpted from a sophisticated range of syncopated rhythms, it is saturated with the moody melodies and fierce 'Squelch Factor' of pulsating synthesisers, hypnotic key patterns and deep, growling sub-bass. With a subtle but captivating Giorgio Moroder/Midnight Express flavour, 'Psco' sounds like a fresh, electrifying soundtrack to a movie that is moving clubland. 'You Are Me', meanwhile, is a classic 16B production. A radiant metamorphosis of electronic funk, its inspired drum programming, sweeping synth patterns, crisp hi-hats and driving percussion all pave the way for a solid, uplifting 4/4 groove that is second to none. The breakdown is heavenly, honing in on cascading colours, piano melodies and infectious rhythms as the bubbling analogue-sounding bassline is dropped. Twisted, tweaked and filtered to perfection, the arrangement is achingly beautiful, its drama addictive. 100% pure16B productions, these tracks are guaranteed to move the crowds, play them loud!
