Review: The debut album from 1-800 Dinosaur sees a wealth of producers associated with the collective provide behind the buttons support for grime MC Trim. That means across the ten tracks, Trim spits over bars from James Blake, Airhead, Happa, Klaus, Bullion, Boothroyd and Dan Foat. Blake and Trim have plenty of form of course, with the producer delivering killer Harmonimixs of the MC back in 2012. A recent Trim 12" on 1-800 Dinosaur set the tone nicely for this album, and Happa's colourful bassline and shuddering drums on "Before I Lied" provides an early highlight as does "Man Like Me." This cut sees Trim trading blows with a super, stripped down production from Airhead, whilst Jim Blake's production on "RPG" recalls his dizzying early work for Hessle and Hemlock. Full marks to the whole crew!

Flesh (12")

  1. Felony Riddim (3:52)
  2. Sittin' Here Redux (4:01)
  3. Fallen (feat Organ Tapes) (3:12)
  4. Toxic Riddim (3:09)
Review: Bala Club collective co-founder and NTS host Endgame made his production debut earlier this year, serving up a fine EP for experimentally inclined imprint Purple Tape Pedigree. Clearly Kode 9 was impressed, as he's snapped up this follow-up for Hyperdub. There's much to admire throughout, including a fine collaboration with singer and producer Organ Tapes ("Flesh", the EP's tasty title track). Arguably best of the bunch, though, is opener "Felony Riddim", where cut-glass melodies and synthesized bells tumble over a punishing, stabbing sub-bass line and strutting, distorted drum machine hits. It's undeniably dark and murky, but with enough melodic positivity and exotic electronics to overcome the track's clandestine vibe.

  1. Iron Lungs (6:45)
  2. Number 24 (5:42)
  3. Footprints In Solid Rock (5:37)
Review: Ploy is a new project from Bristol-dweller Sam Smith, who previously impressed as Samuel via 12" singles on Idle Hands and Not So Much. This EP for Batu's increasingly impressive Timedance comes hot on the heels of a stellar Ploy 12" for Hessle Audio. He begins with the jazzy cymbals, spooky textures, heavy bass, ghostly electronics and metronomic techno pulse of "Iron Lungs", before exploring African style tribal rhythms on the ethno-techno drum workout "Number 24". Another superb three-tracker concludes with the blazed, bass-heavy broken techno shuffle of "Footprints In Soil", where Smith makes great use of quietly weighty sub-bass and pleasingly crispy snare hits.

Kazzt (limited numbered hand-stamped vinyl 12")
Cat: DIFF 004. Rel: 01 Aug 16
  1. Kazzt (4:59)
  2. Kazzt (Mumdance remix) (4:23)
Review: For their first release of 2016 on their occasional Different Circles imprint, Mumdance and Logos' have turned to Rob McAndrews' Airhead project. Since setting his stall out with a number of lauded EPs on R&S records a few years back, McAndrews has been relatively quiet on the solo front but kept busy in his capacity as guitarist for James Blake. "Kazzt" is quietly impressive, with trippy electronics, delay-laden percussion hits, out-there textures and fizzing builds creating energy atop a sparse but weighty kick-drum. Mumdance provides the obligatory flipside remix, increasing the low-end pressure and percussive intensity - mostly via machine-gun drum bursts - while retaining the sparse weirdness of McAndrews' original.

  5. Virtual Bodies (3:19)
Review: Glasgow's Lanark Artefax has been working at electronic music's fringes for some time, showcasing his peculiar brand of broken machine music via a number of self-released, digital-only EPs. The Glasz EP marks his first outing on wax, with Lee Gamble's UIQ offering a fitting home for his experimental, left-of-centre productions. Built around sparse but heavy electro rhythms and Autechre style beat manipulation - with a nod or two to the mutant R&B swing of local boys Rustie and Hudson Mohawke - each of the EP's five tracks pops and spits impressively. Yet despite the off-kilter, experimental nature of the drums, there's plenty of melodic beauty to be found throughout.
