Review: Florian Kupfer and Luke Wyatt (Torn Hawk) met through the Ron Morelli Long Island matchmaking service that has done such a global favor by producing relationships and collaborations between previously isolated weirdos all around the world.

As solo artists they have produced work for some of the most adventurous labels around, including LIES , Technicolour, and Rush Hour's No 'Label' imprint.

Now they join forces for this haunting and darkly hilarious trip.

Candy-mongering ghosts of Halloweens past drag chains down dim hallways, punctuating the gloom with the clank of metal on wet concrete.

Who's that knocking on your door? Just a couple of 16 year-old boys wearing face paint with fake blood coming out of their mouths...hungry for candy.

Review: Valcrond Video, the label of Brooklyn-based visual artist and producer Luke Wyatt presents it's very first vinyl issue in the shape of two new tracks from Torn Hawk, one of Wyatt's aliases. First coming to the fore in a musical sense with a set of distressed guitar and asphalt beat attacks on the LIES White Label series, Torn Hawk has been closely associated with Ron Morelli's label ever since with Wyatt subsequently working with Karen Gwyer, Secret Circuit and Willie Burns. Distancing himself a bit from the grime and grit some associate with his productions, the two new tracks have more in common with the more expansively voiced compositions on Emotional Response release Teen Hawk, or the cinematic melancholy of the untitled EP he released under the alias Lossmaker. Clearly Wyatt is building towards housing all his musical instincts under one roof.

  8. There Was A Time
Review: Aside from boasting arguably the album title of the year, there's plenty to enjoy on this third full length from Luke Wyatt's popular Torn Hawk project. By and large, there's an enjoyable playfulness throughout, with Wyatt variously turning his hand to glistening, shoegaze-inspired ambience (the shimmering guitars of "She Happens"), jaunty, instrumental kraut-pop ("Return to the Pec Deck"), droning, off-kilter soundtrack chic ("Because of MASK"), bubbling, delay-laden electronica ("Under Wolf Rule") and thrillingly gorgeous, pedal steel-flecked Balearica ("I'm Flexible"). Whisper it quietly, but Let's Cry & Do Pushups At The Same Time is an undeniably fun set. Even his most ardent of fans may not have expected that.

Review: Luke Wyatt returns with a second Torn Hawk album for Mexican Summer entitled Union & Return and the eleven tracks mark a move away from the self-styled 'video mulch' that has characterised much of his work under the name. Backed by a campaign of fake self-help motifs, Union & Return will no doubt please fans of Wyatt's work as Teen Hawk and Lossmaker, offering a cleaner and almost orchestral sound across the 11 tracks. Hints of Byrne & Eno and The Penguin Cafe Orchestra are present throughout, but what really shines through is Wyatt's innate talent for crafting complex arrangements that sound cohesive. A real pleasure of a listen.

Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.
