  2. John Shima - "Thought Wave" (5:31)
  3. Toby Tobias - "Sword Art Arcade" (6:07)
  4. Tim Smith - "Graphene" (7:24)
Review: The revered Halal Prepared series on boe extends to its fourth volume with four new acts fresh to the label. Hotly tipped duo, Invisible Menders, made up of outstanding DJ Jane Fitz and thus far underrated producer Dom Ahtuam contribute a stunning Balearic bass-heavy house cut "Fifth Time Lucky". Fresh from his solo EP, John Shima slots in a deep techno workout "Thought Wave". Toby Tobias of Rekids fame pumps out some raw basement lofi vibes with his jacker "Sword Art Arcade" and rounding off the EP on a delicate note is Tim Smith's soft and melodic 707 jam "Graphene".

Review: Toby Tobias has been synonymous with the combined sound of deep-house and disco for the past six years, and his latest release on Quintessentials continues to cement his reputation for quality music. "One Night Onmare Street (Original)" has a thumping bass line and energetic science-fiction synthesisers firing out from deep space cannons. This track drives in all sense of the word, a fast paced house workout powering forward. The Weekend Express remix is our pick of the tweaks; his version of "One Night Onmare Street" holds onto the main chord progressions but rams the drive into high gear, forcing the beat to go faster with a raw, squelching acid line that only drops to let the soul-flecked synths shine through.

Review: The Toby Tobias comeback campaign gathers yet more pace. Here, two tracks from his fine second album Rising Son get a single release, backed with a pair of fine remixes. Versatile don I:Cube remixes "Love Affair", turning the deep, woozy and glassy-eyed Italo-disco chugger into a spacey, expansive chunk of Detroit techno-influenced deep house. Full of deep space electronics and chunky, rolling grooves, it feels like a love survivor from the early '90s. Label-mates Session Victim delivers an interpretation of the dreamy Balearic slow jam "Sloflava". Their version is impressively floor-friendly, using Tobias' original elements - plus some carnival-leaning percussion - to deliver a delicious chunk of soul-flecked, ultra-positive deep house.

Review: Some seven years on from the release of his debut album, Space Shuffle, London producer Toby Tobias is ready to drop the follow-up. Clearly a labour of love, Rising Son touches on many of his now-familiar influences - the futurist synth sounds of Detroit techno, deep house, Chicago jack, Balearica, leftfield boogie, Italo-disco - whilst focusing on a predominantly hardware-based sound that allows his lovingly produced melodies and gorgeous chords due room to breathe. As a result, the album sparkles, with highlights - both dancefloor-focused, such as recent single "Wonder", and more downtempo - cropping up on each of the double-album's four sides. It's actually the more atmospheric downbeat moments, such as the brilliant "Sending Signals" and IDM weird-out "Broken Computer" - that really shine.

Review: It's been seven years since Toby Tobias dropped his debut album on Rekids, Space Shuffle. This sophomore set, then, is long overdue. Seemingly more reliant on hardware - and, in particular, analogue synths and drum machines - Rising Son is an altogether more mature, tightly executed album than its' predecessor. The London producer includes nods to many of his familiar influences - think saucer-eyed Balearica, Italo-disco, acid house, Larry Heard style '80s deepness, modern boogie, Detroit techno and Chicago jack, capturing just the right balance between downtempo curiosities, fuzzy mid-tempo grooves and bona fide dancefloor hits.
