  4. Skirt - "Angracia" (7:30)
Review: What better way to highlight your standing within the music community you serve, than call on the great and the good to contribute to a series celebrating this service? That's the approach Enrique 'Svreca' Mena has taken with the arrival of Semantica's ten year anniversary, pulling together a frightening array of techno and electro talent to feature on a series of 12" releases spread across the rest of 2016. We could fill this space with the names of everyone that's pencilled in, with Regis, Surgeon and DJ Nobu just the tip of the iceberg!! Instead lets focus on those that feature on this inaugural 12", with opener "Rotary 3" finding Donato Dozzy doling out some reduced acid techno, which is well complemented by the slowly unfurling alien tundra "The Smell of Sand" from Semantica newcomer Mod21. Face down and the slightly perturbing mood remains on Stan Tolkachev's "Stockholm Syndrome", whilst the excellent DJ Skirt discards with the techno for the funereal ambience of "Angracia".

  1. In The Meadow Under The Stars
  2. Ikaros
  3. Six Hours
Review: Frozen Border sub-label Horizontal Ground returns with this haunting EP from Birmingham-via-Texas producer DJ Skirt. "In The Meadow Under The Stars", which meanders across the entirety of the A Side, seems unsure as to whether it is delicate or strong; brittle or robust - droning atmospherics and ethereal vocal sweeps mark give the track a menacing sheen. There are no such contradictory messages "Ikaros", which sees a granite hard kick looped deep beneath a hanging synth line, while "Six Hours" could easily be the soundtrack to the scariest Japanese horror flick you've never seen. A stunning reminder of how emotive, moving and frankly terrifying techno can be.

Cat: SEM 028. Rel: 16 Dec 13
  1. Wish In The Maze
  2. Wish In The Maze (Inigo Kennedy remix)
  3. Wish In The Maze (Ancients Methods remix)
Review: Having already graced Semantica with the Tumulto EP earlier this year, Skirt returns to Svreca's label with Wish In The Maze, whose title track provides some eerie halfstep techno with a delicate approach to sound design and as labyrinthine a structure as its name suggests. The remixes are top notch as well, as Token regular Inigo Kennedy provides a version that offers only the merest of regular pulses to the sprawling original, and Ancient Methods adds some slippery breakbeats and overwhelming low end which beef things up considerably.
