Dirty Dubstep/Trap/Grime
  1. Fireworks
  2. Fireworks (T++ Aussen Vor remix)
  3. Undeadman
  4. Undeadman (Mordant Music remix)
Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

  1. Headcleaner (11:35)
  2. In Norwegen Ganz Verwegen (6:25)
Review: Yes! Our main man Shack is back on his own Woe To The Septic Heart with his undeniably singular take on electronic music. Taking string influence from the likes of Muslimgauze, Shackleton has consistently blurred the lines of UK dance music over the years, never truly heading into techno or dubstep, but also never too close to total electronic abstraction. "Headcleaner" is a rich and vibrant blend of his familiarly hypnotic percussion, eerie background sonics and that wavey whirlpool of melodies. "In Norwegen Ganz Verwegen" is broken and disjointed, loose and genre-bending, offering the groove a sort of trans-like state that never quite seems to break free. Wonderful stuff, as always.

Review: Yes, the sonic explorer known as Sam Shackleton returns with some new material on his Woe To The Septic Heart label! Hardly the most prolific of artists in the aftermath of Skull Disco shutting down, the Berlin-based Shackleton has nonetheless maintained and developed his own very singular music vision across releases for Honest Jon's Perlon and Woe To The Septic Heart. This latter label has arguably seen some of the producer's most striking work, experimenting with bright psychedelic tones mirroring the vivid artwork from longstanding visual collaborator Zeke Clough that adorn the label's sleeves. Following up his last release - and most bulging statement yet - in the shape of the much coveted Music For The Quiet Hour/The Drawbar Organ box set was always going to be tough. Instead of matching it, Shackleton has opted for something smaller in scope, with Freezing Opening Thawing a three-track 12? that still retains the brighter explorations of his recent work whilst moving away from sample based material. Essential Sonics!

  1. Be At His Command
  2. Vor Und Zuruck
Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.
