Record Packer Part 4 (Soundtrack)
Record Packer Part 4 (Soundtrack) (green marbled vinyl 7")
Cat: AOS 2020. Rel: 17 Dec 20

Deep House
8 Bit Set Me Up (3:05)
8 Bit Set Me Up (instrumental) (2:11)
8 Bit Desert Eagle (2:19)
Review: Record Packer is a new video game scored by the one and only Detroit don Omar S. He's mostly reworked a load of tunes of his you will know and love in a crunchy, lo-fi, nostalgic 8bit style and is to real them all as part of his new Detroit based virtual and physical exhibition Conant Gardens Party Store. As well as that, some of them are coming on 7", including 'Set It Up,' one of our personal favourites with its aching vocal sample and ice-cold beats. There are two versions of it here as well one of pixelated melodic house jam 'Desert Eagle'.

Sidetrakx Volume #3
Cat: AOS 310. Rel: 15 May 15

Deep House
Ah Nother One (2:23)
Faahhuuuuuu (4:39)
Review: We're so used to Omar-S pursuing a very particular form of Detroit deep house, that when the legendary producer tries something different, it takes us by surprise. Sidetrakx Volume #3 is full of surprises. Take "Uluu", for example; while still a deep house track, its' undulating dub bassline, spaced-out soul vocal and sparse beats are pleasingly different to his traditionally rolling fare. It's mighty impressive, all told, while flipside "Another One 2 Love" almost eschews deep house completely. Instead, Alex Smith delivers a sweet, almost cute soul song built around head-nodding post hip-hop beats and sweet melodies. It, too, is hugely enjoyable, and once again proves his mastery of multiple genres.

Ever Green
Cat: AOS 248. Rel: 31 Jan 22

Deep House
Omar S - "Ever Green" (feat Supercoolwicked) (3:46)
Omar S - "Heaven Knows" (3:41)
Review: New Omar S on FXHE this week and it's the deep, super sultry basement jam that is 'Evergreen' featuring some irresistible vocals again by fellow Detoiter Supercoolwicked, who you may remember from last year's 'What's Good For The Goose'. They increase the pressure a bit more on the B side cut 'Heaven Knows', a late night dub that's perfect for those heads down moments on the dancefloor.

The First One Hundred
Cat: FXHE OAJ. Rel: 12 Aug 21

Funk
The First One Hundred (4:00)
Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler) (4:35)
Review: Any Omar S release is worth checking, but when it also features Detroit funk godfather and Motor City legend Amp Fiddler, as well as Andre Foxxe of Parliament-Funkadelic, then it's pretty much buy on sight. You never know what you're gaping to get with the FXHE boss, and never was that more true than here on this sweet little 7". A-side 'The First One Hundred' is a loop of Omar S's trademark dusty drums and a deeply buried bass guitar riff that is super funky, and 'Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler)' sounds like Prince making house music in Omar S's studio. They are short, but oh so sweet.

Can't Explain
Can't Explain (gold vinyl 7")
Cat: FXHE TORI. Rel: 27 Sep 22

Hip Hop/R&B
Can't Explain (R&B mix By Omar S) (2:39)
Can't Explain (House remix By Omar S) (3:35)
Review: Omar S sets his considerable dancefloor skills to something a little different on a new 7" featuring the vocal talents of TroiAlexis. A young talented Detroit female songwriter who was discovered by Omar S at the Conant Gardens Party Store when she sung acapella to him at a Hi Tech party, TroiAlexis lends an air of soulful class to Omar's trademark electro-slanted electronics on both sides of this single. There's a stripped down - and we mean stripped right down - bass heavy R&B mix on the A-side, while the flip has a sturdier house mix that still gives her voice room to soar.
