Taken EP (12")
Cat: TKN 001. Rel: 27 Feb 12
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
  4. Track 4
Review: The opening track on Taken is a piece of hypnotic, deep techno from one of the genre's pioneers, showing that Jeff Mills can still knock out some fantastic music. An all-encompassing rhythm structure drives the track along as subtle pads gently trample over a rock solid beat. We hit more traditional techno territory with the second track, a relentless attack on the senses with an almost inescapable sense of dread pervading throughout. The third cut takes us on a deep space exploration into sound, with robotic bleeps dancing through an unnerving series of textures and pads. The percussion and kick-drum take a back seat as Mills allows his depiction of the future to make the rhythm move. The intensity grows with each passing second making this another track that simply won't let go. The EP closes out with "Track Four" and another piece of Videodrome, nightmare techno. You'll be falling through a black hole as clocks whir backwards all around, and visions of your past wrongdoings flash in front of your eyes. This final cut keeps you spiralling down into the deepest pits of human despair until there is nothing left but your mind and a guilty conscious. Highly recommended.

The Power (12")
Cat: AX 058. Rel: 16 May 11
  1. Microbe
  2. The Exchange
  3. Spiral Therepy
  4. The Diagnosis
Review: Sir Jeff returns with this sampler 12" featuring highlights from his recent album The Power, released on his own Axis Records imprint. Exploring a similar, albeit slightly denser, sonic terrain to his recent Something In The Sky releases, A Side tracks "Microbe" and "The Exchange" are imbued with tense loops and an almost overwhelming sense of intangible menace. Flip over for the stunning, hypnotic chiming melody of "Spiral Therepy" - backed by a beat so delicate and fragile you have to really listen to realise it's actually there. The beats disappear entirely on "The Diagnosis", leaving ghostly echoes and synth washes to tiptoe cautiously across the bleak sonic landscape. A supreme exploration of restraint from one of electronic music's most relentlessly forward-thinking characters.

Review: Later in the year, Jeff Mills will release the long-awaited follow-up to his legendary Exhibition mix CD. Details are relatively scarce at present, though according to its creator the CD/DVD package "explains a lot about the mindset, and the concepts, and the procedure of how a DJ does what he does". In a bid to raise interest in the project - not that the Detroit legend needs much help in that regard - he's put together this 12" of previously unheard studio material. It's typical of Mills' floor-friendly exploits, with all four tracks fusing intergalactic, outer-space electronics (see opener "Signals To Atomix One") with rolling Motor City grooves (complete with the usual relentless cymbals) and bubbling basslines.

Review: Loaded in conceptual background and forming a follow-on to last years The Jungle Planet, Jeff Mills continues his Sleeper Wakes series with this highly developed album of forward thinking electronics both ambient and energized. "Stellar Black Connector" certainly hits upon his style of techno, albeit in a more cinematic and patient way, but much of the album is more concerned with atmospheric vistas that play out like richly realised incidentals that do a fine job of projecting the accompanying imagery into your cerebral cortex. With its masterful production and unapologetic forward focus, albums don't come much more techno than this.

Review: Eleven years ago Jeff Mills' Exhibitionist DVD undertook a rather ambitious project. An audio visual presentation where from varying camera angles, viewers got to witness the sheer dexterity of Mills' DJing style across three decks and a 909, warts and all. The second volume promises more of the same across two DVDs and a CD. So expect some epic mixes and the opportunity to witness The Wizard in true form in collaboration with a live drummer and even an interpretive dancer! But best of all; hear some brand new tracks, all exclusive to the mix. They're captured right here on this 12", the second volume. Hearing him do 303 acid over his typical 909 jam sounds as brilliant as you'd expect on "Studio Take 1" and "Studio Extra". On "Studio Take 3 & 4" he goes for the classic Axis sound complete with Millsian bleeps and dreamy pads and all with the trademark metallic hiss and crack of the 909, lurking in the background. Don't miss this.

Review: The third and final instalment of Jeff Mills Exhibitionist 2 series is a series of segments (much like his revered Live At The Liquid Room - Tokyo mix CD, released in 1996) from a live DJ performance in Leiden, Netherlands on 21st February 2015. What Mills set would be complete without "The Bells" (which appears on Part1), "Gamma Player" or one of his epic 909 drum machine solos (as heard on Part 4, to much fanfare). There's a whole bunch of other bleepy epics from the Purpose Maker/Axis back catalogue, all mixed with the kind of raw intensity that The Wizard himself can only portray. There's no doubt he's still one of the best in the business, and this one's definitely for the fans.

Review: For those less enamoured with the "USB cube" version of Jeff Mills' latest opus The Jungle Planet, it's finally available in the more standard 2LP format. It sees Mills in full-on sci-fi mode, recounting a tale (in instrumental form, of course) about "the last waking human" on a trip to "the planet of planets". In the wrong hands, this would be a pretentious mess, but there's no one better than the Detroit legend at creating alien worlds using synthesizers and drum machines. While not everyone will get the concept, few will have any complaints about his far-sighted blends of bleep-heavy ambience, swooping soundscapes and wide-eyed techno futurism.

Notes: Over 300 pages of history of Axis Records focusing on its design and art. Approx 280 pages of art/photographs and graphics and 20-30 pages of English text.

What started out as a dance music label evolved into a international force of creativity that is unquestionably responsible for the shape, color and textures of the Dance Music we know today and probably tomorrow. Formed in 1992 by the acclaimed Techno DJ producer and artist Jeff Mills, Axis remains one of the few independent labels that consistently pushes the boundaries of Electronic Music off the dance floors and into the Cosmos. Axis is the science of body and soul.

After 20 years of feverous activity, an archive of work and projects are assembled in this comprehensive collection of art, photographs and designs that certify the influence of vision, concept and production that many producers and DJs refer to then and now.
