Review: Like many of Detroit's deep house and beatdown producers, Delano Smith has been an integral part of the city's musical landscape for nigh on 30 years - something amply demonstrated in the fascinating booklet accompanying his long-promised debut album. Musically, An Odyssey is typical of Smith's previous output, mixing smooth, hypnotic groovers and jazz-flecked deep housers with just the right amount of basement soul and melodic complexity. Given that the tracks - all previously unreleased - were recorded in the last two years, it's no surprise to find that the tracks sit together beautifully. Making a high quality deep house album is notoriously tricky, but Smith has achieved that feat - and with a style and grace that marks out house music's true masters.

  2. Free To Explore (Makam interpretation)
  3. Behind The Shadows (Steve O'Sullivan interpretation)
  4. Free To Explore (Oracy interpretation)
  5. Inspiration (Convextion interpretation)
Review: Here's an intriguing prospect: a doublepack of "interpretations" of tracks from Delano Smith's two albums for Sushitech, with the likes of Marcel Dettmann and Convextion at the controls. It's a simple idea, executed impressively, with plenty to enjoy. Oracy's dub techno take on "Free To Explore" is particularly delicious, while Dettmann's rework of "Inspiration" is an energetic romp through warm and inviting techno pastures. There's more of a minimal influence behind the remixes from Makam and Steve O'Sullivan, leaving Convextion to steal the show with a stunning - not to mention slightly trippy - ambient re-invention of "Inspiration". Impressive stuff, all told.

Techno
  1. A Tale Of Two Cities (Efdemin mix) (7:44)
  2. A Tale Of Two Cities (Tobias mix) (6:35)
Review: Here's something to get the juices flowing: an "ultra-limited", white label 12" featuring reworks of material by Detroit veteran Delano Smith, by two powerhouses of Berlin techno: Efdemin and Tobias. The former handles side A, laying down a thrillingly cyclical, hypnotic concoction built around crackly textures, floaty, dubbed-out synthesizer motifs and Efdemin's usual driving, rolling percussion. Tobias opts for a bolder approach on the flip, filling out the sound-space with spacey pads, fizzing beats, a typically tactile Motor City bassline, delay-laden woodblock hits and effortless melodies.

  2. Track 2 (8:06)
  3. Track 3 (8:59)
  4. Track 4 (7:11)
  5. Track 5 (7:10)
Review: 13 months on from his last outing for the label, Detroit veteran Delano Smith returns to Sushitech. From Silence is typical of his output for the imprint, and presents an evocative late night fusion of shuffling techno hypnotism and locked-in deep house. "A1" sets the tone, with warm, delay-laden riffs stretching out across a hazy, trance-inducing groove. The more up-tempo "B1" keeps a similar ethos while moving further towards techno territory, as does the more obviously dubby "C1". "D1" is a deep, picturesque treat with a brilliant extended breakdown, while closer "D2" is as toasty and comforting as a drunken, fireside cuddle. It's this track - dreamy and tactile, with slightly looser beats - that arguably stands out, despite the high quality threshold throughout.
