Review: 45 years and 30-odd albums deep and still cooking up incredible, exciting fusions Brazilian jazz troupe Azymuth are set to update their near-unparalleled repertoire with a new album later this year. In the meantime they're keeping us warm with their sixth album, 1980's Outubro. In places you can really hear big synthetic influences instantly, like the heavy Yamaha riff on full-powered opener "Papasong". In others it's more subtle and aged (thanks to Daft Punk) with class, like the sexy robo-voxed sleazy funk strutter "Dear Limmertz". Elsewhere you can hear the band at their percussive prime ("Carta Pro Airto") and at their damn right sexiest ("Outubro")... And get all excited for their new material.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Fenix (Ron Trent remix)
  2. Fenix
Review: Here's something to get the blood pumping: a fresh Ron Trent remix of the title track from legendary Brazilian jazz-funk outfit Azymuth's most recent album, 2016's "Fenix". The original version is, of course, rather tidy - think darting synths and vocoder lines, dexterous slap-bass and rich, life-affirming chords - but Trent still manages to serve up a seriously good alternative version. He appears to have utilized every bit of individual instrumentation found on the master tapes, offering a subtle deep house/jazz-funk fusion cut full of loose-limbed drumming, intertwined solos and chords that pulse with sun-kissed positivity. It's not a particularly revolutionary remix, but when the musicianship is this good, why change it?

Review: Joe Davis' Far Out Recordings has always been at the top of our list. Without this fundamental imprint, we wouldn't have discovered a lot of Brazilian funk, soul and disco material from the 70s, and the likes of Gilles Peterson have much to thank Davis for. This particular release is even more special because, unlike the plethora of reissues on Far Out, it's a brand new album from the legendary Azymuth group, leaders in jazz-fusion and disco since their first album back in '73! Sadly, the original keyboardist, Jose Roberto Bertrami, passed away in 2012 but the younger Kiko Continentino has done a fantastic job at accompanying Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros on this new LP. Fenix is an album of energy and magnetism, leading with the jazzy, wonked-out disco of Batucada Em Marte", and continuing into the myriad of tropical flavours that span the entirety of this excellent LP. It's disco for those that don't like to dance, or jazz for those that do - warmly recommended, of course.

Review: With the dust of their new album Fenix still settling, Far Out and Azymuth flex back 37 years for one of their finest and most indelible records in their illustrious and consistent career: "Dear Limmertz" slaps and pops with the same ridiculous soaking wet slap bass it did when it first blew your mind. With dreamy chords, that yearning vocodered vocal and the pensive prelude thrown in, it's still an incredible one-of-a-kind record. And that's before we get to the way-ahead-of-its-time breakbeat and deep groove of "Maracana". This is still piping hot and always will be.
