Review: James Clements continues his explorations into the depths of the grey zone as ASC with The Farthest Reaches double pack on Auxiliary. Samurai Music's Presha has excitedly called these four tracks "a definitive musical statement from one of the most important electronic musicians of our era," and who are we to argue with him? Making full usage of the format and available space, this is ASC in exploratory mode across a quartet of deep ten minute plus productions that have it all; sound design, atmosphere, groove, bass weight. To simply call these epic is selling The Farthest Reaches short!

  3. Neutron Star (6:19)
  4. Spatial Drift (6:37)
Played by: ASC
Review: ASC has gone from strength to strength production wise, since breaking away from the experimental drum and bass sound a few years ago. More recently dabbling in some tough techno tools and breathtaking ambient works like on 2013's Truth Be Told album. But thankfully it seems his old ways have crept back into his production in recent times particularly on Veil (a sub label of his own Auxillary imprint) and it's certainly pleasing to hear. He presents us with the dark and mysterious broken beat assault of "Sphaera" which takes up where he left off a few years ago and exploring that grey area of drum and bass, which is ever intriguing. On the flip is the experimental electro beats of "Neutron Star" with its sombre sci-fi atmosphere taking you on an epic journey. Not forgetting "Spatial Drift" whose sonar bass therapy session builds in resonance, creating a truly tunnelling and hypnotic trip.

Space Echo EP (blue marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SMGRS 07. Rel: 08 Feb 16
  1. Ignite (6:08)
  2. Space Echo (6:34)
  3. Reveal (6:55)
  4. Vanium (6:31)
Review: Modern auteur James Clements is back with more fascinating explorations of the grey zone. Starting out with the psychotic acid experiment of "Ignite" it is then business as usual on the title track, with its dark atmospheres and industrial textures contrasted by a belting gabber style beat; it's pretty brilliant. On the flip "Reveal" is another furious 170 BPM experiment, innovative as much as it is utterly confronting, while final track "Vanium" switches to cruise control on this mysteriously bleepy sci-fi epic somewhere between Sahko and the Autonomic sound. Sounds good enough right?
