Review: After making his debut with a delightfully dusty scalpel job on Canada's Common Edit imprint, Khotin spent 2014 showcasing home-made blends of new age deep house and intoxicating "intelligent techno" on 1080p and Normals Welcome. Here, he pops up on Heart To Heart with more melodious, dreamy, retro-futurist fare. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the relentless drum machine handclaps, swirling pads and crystalline hits of "AT03", to the intergalactic textures, thumping kick-drums and spacey electronics of "XP Waste". Best of all, though, is "For U To Feel", whose bubbling electronics and picture postcard melodies are brilliantly offset by a clattering drum machine groove.

Review: Since launching late last year, Bristol-based deep house imprint Shall Not Fade has made all the right moves. Their debut 12", from Aussie newcomer Mall Grab, was a jazzy deep house treat, and this follow-up is equally as impressive. It comes from Leeds-based studio buff Jordan "LK" Saxton. He begins in jazzy fashion, layering lilting jazz horns atop a driving deep house groove. "Unpressed" follows a similar formula, replacing the hazy horns with delicious electric piano loops, before he tips a wink in the direction of Soundstream and Moodymann on the rich, evocative "Jaded Rhythm". Finally, he effortlessly blends house, R&B and off-kilter modern soul on undoubted EP highlight "Oh U Sexy Thang". Top stuff.

Review: Aussie deep house producer Jordon Alexander has enjoyed a successful 2015, delivering a pair of deliciously woozy and evocative - yet pleasingly floor-friendly - EPs on Collect-Call and 1080p. Here, he rounds of the year with another sumptuous selection of tracks that should please anyone who likes their deep house warm, dubby and trippy. Both "Happiness" and "Orange County" make great use of dreamy, delay-laden vocal samples, placing them atop effortlessly tactile grooves and toasty chords. He subtly increases the tempo on the densely percussive but decidedly hazy "Alone", before delivering more horizontal, fireside deepness in the shape of "Real".

Review: In a week where there's been a veritable flood of vinyl-shaped goodness from Athens Of The North, this 7" stood out still. Look up the meaning of Deep Funk online and the smarter cookies will have this New World 7", The World Today, listed as a prime example; a huge cut for the master Keb Darge back at the turn of the 21st century and a very record whose original copies trade hands for silly money. Recorded and released back in 1974 for Frank Virtue's Philly label Virtue Records, both cuts from the 7" have been kindly licensed to Athens Of The North by the man's daughters. Form an orderly queue, thank the Virtues, thank DJ Fryer, and cherish this gem of a deep funk 7!

Review: With the likes of Batu drawing so much attention for his new bend on techno, how about a little appreciation for what Parris is doing. For an idea of what Parris has done with a 808 bass drum check out his Idle Hands debut then revert back to this 12"s woofing "Skeletal". With some light percussion added over the top, this track demands a proper dub soundsystem. It's a similar situation on "Bloom" too, only the bass has been turned down to allow for something a little more subtle... a little. Meanwhile "South East Of The Mountain" provides an alternative rhythm track with atmospheric marimbas and other African percussion giving the production as much an exotic flavour as it does an urban touch.

Review: The first ever Athens of the North 12" is a real pearler, presenting the unreleased full length mix of Symbol 8's classic disco burner "I Thought You Wanted To Dance." The track was originally pressed on 7" back in 1978, split down the middle with one part on each side, but it's a track that was made for the full 12" format and is done so here on a Full Midtown Mix. Charlie Adams versatile vocal flipping into falsetto with ease while the band holds the solid groove is a special thing. On the flip-side is a Shock Version of "I Thought You Wanted To Dance," which surfaced later and sounds very different, sitting pretty alongside a personal DJ Fryer favourite "Call Me". Essential as always.
