  1. (You've Got) That Something (extended version) (10:43)
  2. Dancing Into The Stars (extended version) (11:05)
Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

  2. 020202
  3. 030303
Review: Burnski and Jon Woodall's Constant Black sublabel follows up a strong opening gambit from Noha with this single from Michael James. It's a refined exercise in minimal house with plenty of warmth and character woven in between the sleek, shuffling beats. "010101" bubbles away on melodic delay ripples and slow drifting pads, while "020202" gets into freakier territory with its nocturnal sound set. "030303" is the dreamiest jam on the record, reaching skywards with its soft synth tones while that insistent groove rolls away underneath. As far as classy minimal house goes, it doesn't get any better than this.

  3. Reunion (8:14)
Review: Finale Sessions are always ready to support emerging talent in their corner of deep house and techno, and so it goes with Pola who pops up with a clean slate on the 34 Sessions EP. Even if the artist is a newcomer, they clearly have a gift for crafting the kind of kinetic, immersive body music that Finale is known for. "Fallen Idol" keeps things funky and subtly dubbed out, while "Winds Of Vengeance" prefers a tougher rhythmic undercarriage and punchy acid lines. "Reunion" equally moves with purpose, but as with the other tracks on the record there's plenty of soul to match the intensity.

Review: Pocket Money is an independent label based out of Manchester dedicated to releasing modern underground house music with rhythm and soul, influenced by New York, Detroit and Chicago. They return with their fifth release to date, this time collaborating with Polish artist Soul Habitat: an artist firmly rooted in the deeper end of the house pool and this EP is a shining example of his commitment to it. Starting off with the smooth and sexy late night deepness of "8th Avenue" which is reminiscent of local Manchester legend Greg Fenton, the flipside shows off some real panache too with "The Feeling" which is an emotive and uplifting vocal house scorcher (with a razor sharp bassline) and then the absolutely electric Mr Fingers tribute "Class Of 909".

  3. A Message For The DJ (Jimpster Red Light remix) (7:27)
Review: Delano Smith's "A Message For The DJ" was first released in a distant 2005 haze, but the EP has remained a classic ever since. That's because it's a prime example of the combined powers of old-school Detroit techno and more contemporary waves of European deep house; Smith is a master of this artform, and this particular release, out on Detroit's own Still Music, has the ability to please all sorts of listeners and club-dwellers. The lead tune is full-bodied groove, taking inspiration from the US' heritage, but taking the percussion that one bit closer to what many would term 'minimal'. "Inception Dub" is just as classy and laid-back, a dreamy house assemblage with seductive jazzy nuances, leaving main man Jimpster to remix "A Message For The DJ" into a more driving, more charging tech-house monster that is perhaps the pinnacle of the entire subgenre. A piece of contemporary dance music history, right here...

Review: French label DDD now present Society of Silence composed of two Parisian artists and friends Benoît Legrain (Fareed) and Nicolas Villebrun also known as Tite. They usually appear on their eponymous imprint in addition to Fragil Musique or legendary local labels Versatile or Concrete. On "Ambivalent" they throw down a deep and dusty groove that is covered in a thick haze of smoke, you can smell the dust coming off those dense beats supporting some rusty/analogue groove aesthetics. Quite fitting then that they get in NYC's finest DJ Nature for some equally dope but more summery deepness; similar to that great stuff he threw down on Cottam's Ruff Draft last year.

He had his very first release in 2012 on Beats Delivery and gave a solid impression of what was to come. He went on with outings on Tusk Wax, Arma, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials. He inaugurates Burnin Music here with the cheeky indie house of "Black Magic" which calls to mind recent work by Moscoman or Red Axes. The blasphemy continues on the A side with the lo-fi house of "God Bless Atheism". The driving deep groove on the flip entitled "Secret Sunbath" has some summery and tropical retro vibes to balance out its tough Robert Hood style bass loop before he closes out the EP nicely with the esoteric afro house jam "Hidden Object".

Review: Dutch analogue punk Vincent Koreman returns as Drvg Cvltvre for some retro devoured techno that suits Bintus' Power Vacuum just perfectly. The New York Haunted boss throws down the tough rave stomper "Bunkerpunch" on the A side which sounds like a euphoric 6AM party down at the Packard Plant Detroit circa '93. On the B side we have got "Air Raid" where the rave theatrics continue, complete with siren sounds, on this wonderful homage to early Underground Resistance with its hands in the air chords and intermittent breakbeat action. Reaching near anthemic moments like Koreman's 2015 killer "Crack Spirit Guide". Following up wicked releases on Poverty Is Violence, Shipwrec and Pinkman: this guy absolute kills it as always!

Review: From Moods & Grooves to Sistrum, Brian Harden has served up more than enough soulful, synth-led house and techno in his time. It's just the kind of style that suits the mood on D3, and so the label has picked up his essential "Chicago To Detroit" jam and called upon a fine selection of remixers to rework the track. First up is Byron The Aquarius, who drops some expressive broken beat drums into the mix to spar with the illustrious melodic tones to great effect. Meanwhile the label boss Brian gets busy with a classic, straight-up adaptation on his "Chicago Sur Seine Mix" before Patrice Scott opts for an energised variation with poignant new Rhodes-esque keys floating on top.

Review: The Manuscript mission rolls on unabated as the Ukranian label pairs long lost deep house gems with more contemporary productions. Slam Mode's "Morning Side Dr" is a gorgeous cut laden with plush synth tones to melt the hardest of dancers, while Dennis DeSantis' "Leisure" feeds touches of EBM into a mellow, dubby construction that spans styles with ease. Label boss Vincent Inc joins up with Jon Da Silva for "Thinkin About U", which Questionmarq turns into a delightfully quirky remix before Sasha Makin and Suntetic round the EP off with the epic "Drumatik".

Review: For the second installment in Dekmantel's ongoing 10th anniversary series, the well-regarded Dutch label has recruited two notable talents: man-for-all-seasons Call Super, and fast-rising producer Shanti Celeste. Call Super's A-side excursion is a pleasingly tactile, spacey and rubbery affair, with vintage bleeps and Motor City electronics crowding around a drum machine groove that sits somewhere between body popping electro and loved-up deep house. Shanti Celeste takes a different approach on the flip, fusing her usual mood-enhancing synthesizer chords and melodies with a raw, energy-filled rhythm track that owes more to late night techno than the sumptuous deep house of her early productions.

Review: Different Shapes & Sizes is a new, three part series of EPs from Berlin resident Spencer Parker forthcoming on his Work Them Records imprint over the next few months. Conceived as a neat way of showcasing Parker's love for different shades of house and techno, The third installment takes a walk through the Rekids artist's love for the subtle differences in the genres he tends to focus on in most in his sets. On the A side is the tough and rugged DJ tool "Riff Shapes" with its steely funk groove and hypnotic piano loops geared for some proper Sunday afternoon debauchery up at Panorama Bar: where Spencer is a regular at. On the flip "Size: Yes" goes for en equally stomping and attitude driven house jam more inspired by an early '90s NYC basement vibe.

Review: Over the course of his 11-year career, Ambivalent has already notched up releases on (deep breath) Kompakt Extra, Ovum, Minus, Valence, Cocoon and Last Night On Earth. Here he makes his debut on Enemy LTD, kicking things off with the metallic techno-funk brilliance of "Drag". The original, a no-nonsense blend of dexterous percussion programming, sludgy bass and complimentary electronics - is given a dark and distorted, no-holds-barred makeover by Amotik, while Dustin Zahn delivers a sparkling, intergalactic interpretation. Fittingly, Ambivalent finishes things off with "Buck", where wavering riffs and looped noises ride a thrusting, kick-drum dominating rhythm track.

Review: LA-based producer Mor Elian has already scored big releases with her two previous transmissions, landing on Prime Numbers and Hypercolour, as her reputation rises in the field of dynamic deep house music. On this turn for Finale Sessions she lays down some of her strongest work to date, amping up the dubby tendencies on "Orionids" before heading into a propulsive techno dimension on the wonderfully airy "Light Pollution". EP closer "Echo Park" meanwhile fuses a disparate spread of electronic sounds into a mechanical yet strangely inviting construction for adventurous heads to get lost in.

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market.
