Cat: MORK 012. Rel: 27 Mar 17
Techno
  1. Classe2 (Simple version) (6:06)
  2. D'or22 (8:04)
  3. Classe2 (Sunday Lit Reffaaax) (4:48)
  4. Healyrslfw Lee (5:47)
Review: Naturally, the Mork labels swaps and borrows artists from its parent label, Lobster Theremin, but this shouldn't take away the fact that the imprint very much focusses on its own quality of techno. Unlike LT, Mork has a much darker, techno-laden approach to club music, and Royer seems like the perfect associate to make the jump into the shadows. "Classe2 (Simple Version)" opens the doors to a moody yet noticeably soulful assortment of pads and grainy house rhythms, which fall elegantly into the even more lo-fi landscapes of "D'orr22". On the flip, the latter tune receives a sun-kissed, 'Sunday Lit Refaax' version, adding yet more analogue mystique to the original cut, which leaves "Healyrslfw Lee" to take a trip down greener pastures, and what we like to call 'beach house' vibes. Lovely stuff.

Techno
  1. Pentagons
  2. Ammonia
  3. Mirror
Review: More brain-melting techno from Rrose on the producer's Eaux label - and if you take the label's other releases into account: you've been warned. "Pentagons" is a gurgling self-modulating monster of climbing tones and destroyed frequencies - think Kevin Gorman's "7am Stepper" on a brutal overdose of steroids, while "Ammonia" sees Rrose return to the Sandwell District sound we all fell in love with in 2011, only cultivated further. Completing this monolithic release is the acid-tripping "Mirror", a minimal (by Rrose standards), resonance-fuelled trip down the rabbit hole every clubber should experience every now and then. Donato Dozzy eat your heart out!

  3. Protocol Machinery (6:25)
Review: Few producers know their way around a modern disco instrumental like Rudman. On-point for well over a decade and still true to the original soul and machine warmth, the "Pagoda" EP reminds us of his skills: Put the needle down and prepare to glide from the stylish, stripped back synth-boogie of "Front Era" face-first into the deeper, bass-led mid-tempo house hypnosis of "Outburn Memories" before floating away into the ether with the dubby, key stroking session "Protocol Machinery" where the walking bassline does all the talking.

Review: Spotted on his "Pagoda" 12", Zagreb nu disco OG refixes our focus and adds a new lease of life to its velvet keys, warm, measured funk aesthetic and occasional cowbell tickles. Each remix adds a new chapter; Pete Herbert brings a different twist and bigger sweeps to the synths, A Vision Of Panorama Balearic the Dickens out of things with loose legged gliding synths and slo-mo sunset finish while Greene Linez closes the show on a sweet and slinky two-step flex. Something for every occasion. Tip!

  1. Things That (6:42)
  2. Make You (8:05)
  3. Go Hmmm!? (8:48)
Review: Germany's Dana Ruh has been a consistent source of quality house and techno since her first recordings began to appear at the end of the noughties; the artist has offered new and compelling forms of the genres on a regular basis, and it's no surprise that she's earned spots on some of the most sought-after imprints like Ostgut Ton or Cocoon Recordings. Recently, however, she's decided to take things into her own hands thanks to the emergence of her own label, the aptly named Cave Recordings. "Things That" spearheads the Cave Jams EP with a lovely, full-bodied groove full of tribal spirit and improvisational drum sequences, while "Make You" takes a few lessons from early era NYC house thanks to some absolutely divine percussion work in the same vein as the great Romanthony. "Go Hmmm!?" is a proper live jam, all rough and raw, and ready for the true house heads to deploy onto the hungry underground masses.

  1. Overlapping Space Time (14:05)
  2. I See (12:23)
Review: New York's Kamran Sadeghi is back for Japanese imprint Fasten Musique with more rolling minimal tech house executed with fine precision. He last appeared on the label's previous release with his wicked remix of Chris Carrier aka Monsieur Georget's "Double Lune". On side A prepare for some seriously hypnotic vibes on the 14 minute trance inducing session that is "Overlapping Space Time" and it's quite a fitting title really on this dark, tripped out epic. On the flip it's a much deeper and mellower affair with "I See" a quirky microhouse groove that will appeal to fans of the Minibar or Perlon sound. Following up some great releases for All Inn, Meander and Russia's Nervmusic, Sadeghi continues to impress. Tip!

Review: From Another Mind, founded in 2014, presents its fourth and most capacious release to date. Having started off initially as a South-German Party series, this release sees commanders-in-chief SHDW & Obscure Shape invite back previous guests from the clubnight, just this time using their talents as remixers to breathe new life into the first three much praised From Another Mind records. The likes of Rodhad, Tale Of Us & Mind Against, Dax J, Konstantin Sibold and Shlomo all feature with contributions staying true to the Label's sound forged initially by its founders, and whether going down an epic or a more banging path, all versions pay respect to that special hypnotism which has found so many supporters. Veteran Producer James Ruskin masterfully condenses "Nachtblende" down to a loop while Ryan James Ford brings a touch of IDM-ish Bleep Techno to "Augen Der Nacht". Ed Davenport explores his Inland project further, contributing a stepping techno journey which is only matched by Rodhad's version in its sheer vastness. The release is split in two version EPs, namely FAM004.1 & FAM004.2. Both artworks function by themselves however its full glory shines when held next to each other as the paintings complement each other.

Review: Simbad Stanislas has enjoyed a fine start to 2017, with copies of his first outing on Funkineven's Apron label simply flying off the shelves. Here he transfers to Lo Recordings to deliver another collection of eccentric, off-kilter, hard-to-pin-down dancefloor treats. Stanislas' stock-in-trade is combining dusty, MPC-powered house rhythms with quirky, left-of-centre sounds. This fusion can be heard loud and clear on "Ping Pong Love", where a soulful vocal sample is combining with weirdo electronics and thrusting analogue noises, and amongst the intergalactic synths, bubbly electronics and bizarre spoken word samples of ambient closer "Message 045". There's a slightly breezier, break-of-dawn feel to the overwhelmingly loved-up World Air Hybird Remix of "Ping Pong Love", while "Backstreet" is a jolly, jammed-out chunk of loose-limbed deep house positivity.

Review: Chicago duo Kenny Gino and Mike T aka Solid Gold Playaz have consistently produced material since 1999 on a variety of labels. From Portland's Losonofono, through to Soulfuric Trax and even Berlin techno merchants Kanzleramt and not to mention their own Solid Gold Records. The Minds Beneath Atlantis EP comes courtesy of Jerome Deradji's esteemed Still Music and starts off with the absolutely sexy deepness of "Shhh (Quiet)" (feat DOT) which will appeal to proper deep house nostalgists like us, likewise "U With Me" has that Detroit style that calls to mind other great producers like Big Strick or Andres. On the flip, things take a turn for the more energetic and look more towards the Motor City than their Windy City again on the soulful techno workout "What Lies Beneath"

Review: Two years on from his last outing under the alias, Green Door Studio engineer Stuart Evans delivers a new Sordid Sound System EP. As usual, dusty old electronic instruments and analogue hardware are the Glaswegian's tools of choice, with hard-to-pigeonhole thrills being the result. He begins with the Golden Teacher-ish trip that is "The Grove", where echo-laden vocal snippets and dub-wise cut-ups wrap their way around acid-fired electronics and a chugging groove. The densely percussive "Fear Eats The World" sees him wander off towards post-punk krautrock pastures, while "Blues Pour Vivienne" is a slipped waltz beamed down from another planet. A fine EP is drawn to a close by "Sordida Discoteca", a delay-laden voyage into proto-techno territory in the company of a gaggle of Italo-disco and EBM freaks.

Now the duo are back with more goodies from their Studio OST project, and once again the fusion between gossamer threads of melody and delicately crafted machine rhythms is evident throughout this 12". "Eventide" comes as a full blown track and a sumptuous beatless version, while "Ascension" has a dubby original and useful drums-only cut, making this record both functional and an absolute delight to listen to.

Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

Now he steps up to Chicago label Perpetual Rhythms with some dazzling deep house confections that take their cue from the likes of Glenn Underground but then inject some star-gazing Detroit techno motifs into the mix for a truly soul-stirring end result. Both classically funky and future-minded in its execution, this is the kind of record that can turn heads without trying too hard to be different.

As himself, Tensal he has released on Modularz, Pole Recordings and his eponymous imprint in addition to Kynant who originally released Opposite Inertia in 2016. Now we're treated to a bunch of killer remixes by master hypnotist Mike Parker, where the New York native delivers his unmistakable trance induction via analogue psychedelia: brilliantly as always! On the flip, the Hessle Audio affiliated Pangaea make a surprise appearance and delivers a noisy and disjointed rendition soaked in gritty distortion and overdrive.

Review: LA not-so-confidential: Tetrad has been developing a strong reputation for slick sub aesthetics for a little while now, appearing on labels such as Sublimate and Sure State. Now bringing his emerging friend and sonic kindred spirit Ahkur along for the ride, the result is the smoke-stacked, toxic bass croaker that's "Ashes Fall", a powerful piece of darkness designed for 3am and later. "Crumble" sees Tetrad back on the solo flex with a sweet sub that sits behind everything anonymously until it starts to flop out behind the kicks in a dizzying, almost physical way. Authentic.

Review: It was undoubtedly a big moment for Hudd Traxx when they got Chez Damier on board to lend his vocal tones to Eddie Leader and Tomson's "I Am With You" back in 2014. A few years on and Huddersfield's premier house label are revisiting the modern classic with a raft of top shelf remixers on hand. Iron Curtis brings a bubbling, piano-enriched lilt to the jam, while Bristolian duo Outboxx go for an understated slice of straight up deep house. Ekkohaus gets busy with chunky tech house concoction, and then Sakro smooths the mood out with some jazzy keys and a steady groove.

Review: Casey Tucker has been synonymous with Boe's sister label For Those That Knoe, making a shining example of the imprint's mission to unearth music from long-serving, overlooked talents in the field of Detroit-flavoured house and techno. On this third installment, Tucker's distinctive style positively leaps out of the speakers. "Carpet Dancer" is a ragged yet effervescent twist of plush techno melodics and spirited beat manipulation, while "Juxtaposition" maintains the sparkling synth work while bringing the drums in line. "Whatever Comes To Mind" is the deeper offering on the record, bringing balance to another fine missive from a hidden gem of an artist.

Review: France's Varhat is back after some great tracks on Crocus and Aku but who can forget that killer edit of Stablo he did last year. This guy's is on a roll and one to watch, which says a lot considering the amount of talent coming of Paris at the moment. This time it's for Ukranian wunderkind Mulen's imprint and it's a as deep and as rolling as you'd expect. The whole EP is great as a whole but really shines on "Track 2 " with its pitched down acid bassline and those sweet immersive pads. "Track 3" is properly deep with its smooth bassline, tight rhythm and those swirling and hypnotic synths working a treat.

Review: Neroli bossman Enrico Crivellaro returns with his first 12" in quite some time. As always, it's a genuine odyssey that digs deep and runs the whole groove gamut... The light-stepping slap-bass and sugar-soul harmonies of "Things", the Clausellian spirituality (and mental percussion) of "City", the blushing soul haze of "Supreme", the piano-primed Italo flourishes of "Pistoleros" and the rich upbeat soul and prominent bass runs of "A Glass Of OJ"... Slam jam, thank you ma'am.
