Review: BOOM! Talk about a bombshell landing on us like a ton of bricks! Or, rather, a load of locked grooves for us to bash out on any unsuspecting club-dweller. Big boys Willie Burns and DJ Overdose team up for a collaborative pack of stripped-down rhythms on DJ Haus' constantly inspiring Unknown To The Unknown, and we think these two are a perfect match. The former's been running his own strain of house since the beginning of the 2010s, while the latter's offered a very special sort of electro sound that takes plenty of influence from The Hague's school of thought and of course, the Miami sound. This is only a 12" but it feels like much more than that; the A-side is made up of two swinging house grooves that recall the best of the Chicago warehouse days, whereas the flip is comprised of 15 banging locked grooves for you to mash up and warp as you please throughout for your Saturday night jamboree. Absolutely sick - cop it!

  4. Love Is Over (4:58)
Review: When Kerri Chandler wrote the tracks that make up the Panic E.P way back in 1992, he was little more than an up-and-coming producer from East Orange, New Jersey. Much has changed in the quarter of a century since, but Panic remains one of the now legendary house producer's finest 12" singles. Check, for example, the snaking sax samples, thumping kick-drums and fluttering vocal samples of late night classic "Get Up", the bouncy New Jersey drums and undulating synth-bass of "Something Wrong" and the basement-bothering, disco-sampling wooziness of "Love Is Over". These are raw, stripped back house tracks from the top drawer that don't seem to have aged since the moment they first appeared in stores.

  2. Spok (Nektar Agu remix)
Review: Leading minimal label The Untold Stories are at it again, and after their star turn from STL recently they've now invited down another legend in the shape of Franco Cinelli. The original is classic Cinelli, pivoting around crisp, clean percussive lines and the bare essential atmospherics. Nektar Agu steps up for a remix that continues the minimalist theme, but adds some looming bass tones into the mix that pushes the track into a dubbier headspace. It's another slab of refined, stripped down tackle for the reductionist dancefloor, as you would expect from The Untold Stories.

Review: Cucumb45 is a new pseudonym from Bjarki, a fearlessly forthright producer who already boasts a shed-full of alternative aliases. Something Weirdcore is predictably bizarre and off-the-wall, but also really rather good. The five tracks offer a whistle-stop tour of some of his influences, from the late '90s, trip-hop era Ninja Tune bounce of "Music For Advertising" and electrofunk-goes-braindance business of "14 Comstack 3", to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink hardcore/house mash-up madness of "[Karate Latte Heep Mix 4]". Arguably best of all, though, is "Something Weirdcore4", a pirate-radio friendly trip into warped '93 jungle territory with bleep techno style sub-bass and sampled children's voices. In two words: delightfully bonkers.

  4. Big Foot (Danyb Re-Vision) (6:25)
Review: Roman in Brooklyn, Danilo Braca continues to pay homage to his new home with the second instalment of his edit series. Tapping deep into the city's tradition, each cut is as authentic and deeply dug as NYC's culture commands. Across the four tracks we're taken through the layers of Braca's make-up (and, most likely, DJ sets): the energetic disco funk of "Excuse Me Sir", the almost Nuyorican twangs of the jazzier "Illas", the hazy disco swoons of "Got Time For Love" and the beautifully psychedelic finale; the pipe-smoking, guitar-twanging cosmic trip that is "Big Foot". Big cuts.

Review: Since he moved from Rome to Brooklyn, Danilo Braca has spent the last six years deep in NYC club culture as a DJ and soundman. Constantly soaking up the sounds and spirit, he's now ready to unleash his own contributions with the "Busted" edit series. Consummately excavated and creatively extended we're hurtled deep into the high energy funk on the epic 13 minute "Love Is Torturing Me" and turbo gospel freak-out "Play Me Harder" before taking a deep hazy breath on the cosmic swampy funk of "Have A Cake". An accomplished debut. "Busted" makes us feel good.

Review: After making occasional appearances on compilation style EPs, deep house artist Demuja - AKA Salzburg-based producer Bernhard Weiss - finally made his solo vinyl debut last month. Here he delivers a speedy follow-up on Austrian imprint RTCT. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the drowsy chords, classic vocal samples and punchy drum machine hits of "Feel Like Me", to the driving, Detroit techno influenced, acid-laden stomp of "Volt". Steve Urulu is on hand to provide a tasty remix of the latter track, toning down the techno influences in favour of a locked-in deep house groove, darting synth stabs and sparkling electronics.

Review: Unlike seminal Vancouver EBM/industrialists Skinny Puppy, Digital Poodle had only a cult following in Toronto and some parts of the North American continent; a real shame considering their impressive body of work. However, tracks such as 1995's "Head Of Lenin" got some international airplay, not to mention being played at quite a few goth clubs back in the day (not that we'd know, of course!). Finally there's a a renewed enthusiasm around them among a new generation of fans and die-hard nostalgists alike. 1992's Soul Crush" gets a worthy reissue on local analogue freak Solvent's Suction imprint and gets a some pretty nifty reworks. Sonic Groove main man Adam X serves up a pounding, droning and hypnotic rendition that stands in stark contrast to the slow and steely funk groove of the original. Also worthy of mention is British legends Soviet France and their "Virtual Mix" a B side to the original release which is 13 minutes of epic ambient house bliss.

Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

Review: This awesome piece of early 90's New Jersey garage still works today. The first release on Madhouse Records which was produced by Kerri Chandler and featuring the raw vocals of James 'Dreamer G' Gordon. This classic bears all the hallmarks of the legendary producer's trademark sound. As the label themselves said best "fans of 'proper house music will be all over this, whether long time followers of the man like Kerri or new to the game - Either way, this is some essential reissue business!" This is the first in a series of official Madhouse/Kerri Chandler reissues for 2017. Every title has been remastered by Chandler himself, from all original sources and each reissue has been legitimately released in full conjunction with Kerri and Madhouse records.

Review: Thanks to delivering some tip-top material over the last 12 months, Emperor is widely considered to be one of drum & bass's most exciting young talents. His style isn't exactly left-of-centre, but he's not afraid to tamper with the drum & bass blueprint in search of next-level dancefloor thrills. Take opener "Defect", for example, whose fusion of choppy, breakcore-influenced drum programming, mutilated Dalek voices and mechanical bass is undeniable off-piste. Elsewhere on this impressive double-pack, you'll find the full-frontal assault on the senses that is "Shadow", the precise-but-punchy rhythms and mind-melting industrial bass of "Calypso", and the weighty horror-jungle of "Tireless".

Review: Yu Asaeda's been putting out a whole range of quality, bass-centric sounds under the name ENA since the late 2000s, but these have come out on a rather sporadic basis. Appearances for the infamous 7even Recordings was followed by material on Samurai Horo, the excellent Hidden Hawaii and, more recently, the Samurai label's offshoot, Horo. Divided: Body is so much more than a mere 'bass' EP, and it actually manages to veer off into some pretty strange and imperceptible sounds that remind us of the material emanating from the PAN consortium. For instance, the opening "11th Divided" manages to create a raw, loose groove out of fractured synth sounds, which is followed up nicely by the swarming drones operating in the higher ends of "12th Divided". Over on the flip, "13th Divided" launches a subtle yet hefty groove made up of what sound like bass pops made from a monophonic synth, which leaves "14th Divided" to linger in its dreary pool of fuzzy drones and washed-up sonics. A massive, merited TIP!

  4. F-on - "Alpengluhen" (10:50)
Review: Up to this point, the only artists to have surfaced out of the Antimatter label have been F-on and Bule. This is is no way a criticism. In fact, we like it this way, and are secretly hoping that these two minds keep on coming up with this dope material. That's because the Antimatter sound is very much their own; it's a strange and singular style of electronic dance music that doesn't pretend to be a part of any particular sub-genre. Moreover, although the two don't actually collaborate on these tunes, they've successfully managed to conjure a similar sound to one another, an abstract and temperamental shade of house with a vividly loose edge. From F-on's "Take Care Of Yourself" through to Bule's "Photon", we're taken on a journey through mid-tempo beats that have been utterly engulfed in oceans of vast and endless pads circling in mid-air. It almost feels like dub-techno, but it's still one step behind. One place lower in the evolutionary food chain. They're a bunch of head-spinners, and we're sure that we'll see more of these two in the near future.

The two have been present and very much in the frontline since the turn of the millennium, but their collaborative project under the Fixmer/McCarthy banner has been more of a recent conception. They've released plenty of effective dance material for Fixmer's own Planet Rouge imprint so, it was time to branch out, and what better way to do that then release an EP for Adam X's gnarly Sonic Groove? The label's been a staple of the NYC techno diet since the 90s, and it really is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down as it reaches its 30 year birthday. There's two cuts to the electrifying "Chemicals" tune, a first version with the vocals intact, and a second instrumental cut; the base of the tune is high-powered techno with a bubbling electro bass line, and a malevolent flurry of punked-out vocalism. "Wrong Planet" is a stranger sort of beast, a tune that lurks in the depths of the techno underbelly, but that has no problems in launching continuous arial threats in the form of sinister screams and spectral melodies. Enter if you dare...

Review: Amsterdam's Nachtbraker heads up Quartet Series which launched in 2016 and after four various artists EPs now presents its first solo artist 12" by local newcomer Scott Franka with The Gym EP. Starting out with the title track, which is a dubby and emotive exercise in deepness that has a classic, Larry heard style nostalgia about it, he also gives us "Toenail" which by comparison is much more rough and dusty but again utilising some really soulful pads and bumpy bass over its absolutely wicked drum patterns. On the flip things take a turn for the slightly more experimental on "Sorry" taking on the kind of UK sounds of Actress or the like, while "Street" goes for some electro style ghetto techniques.

Soul
  1. Watchin' You (4:09)
  2. To The Sky (4:39)
Review: Little is known about Friction Band's hyper-rare 45" besides the fact it's a brilliant example of outsider, slightly experimental style of modern soul, it's passed hands for strong triple figures in recent years and it's just been injected with a whole new lease of life by Fryer. "Watchin' You" is a footloose boogie jam with unabashed use of freeform keys while "To The Sky" flips for a softer, more sentimental soul affair that's fringed by just the right amount of dreamy cosmicity. Another precision find by AOTN.
