Review: The career rebirth of long-serving British duo 100Hz, whose fine debut 12" "Low Frequency Overload" dropped way back in 1989, continues apace. Following fine recent outing on Bosconi and Veniceberg they resurface on Howl. There's naturally much to admire, from the mildly foreboding electronics, swirling chords and rubbery drum machine beats of "Howl009.1" and vintage bleep-meets-Jaydee throb of "Howl009.2", to the bass-heavy, pitched-down weirdness of closer "Howl009.4". Arguably best of all, though, is the analogue positivity of "Howl009.3", where bright electric piano lines and Balearic synthesizer flourishes work in glorious union with ragged acid bass and a bustling, breakbeat house rhythm.

Review: Berlin's Ewax are back with more lush yet tough deep house goodness, on another various artists compilation. Starting out on the A side with the smooth late night groove of "The Old Shit" by Spanish duo Carlos Vila & Hector Avila aka 2vilas while the second offering on the A side comes courtesy of The Willers Bros with "Quantise" where the EGG London residents throw down some loopy swing fuelled tech house. On the flip Julien Sandre & Mennie turn the heat up on "Spacer" (our personal favourite on here!) while Laurent Ci's "Turn" shows us something emotive to dance to.

Electro
  1. Black Hole (5:48)
  2. Fall To Our Knees (5:07)
Review: Italy's Emilio Urbano is no newcomer to the scene. The dude's A Credible Eye Witness project has been responsible for churning out electro since the late 90s, and he's cut from the same cloth as Rome's other important tech fiends like Leo Anibaldi and the great Lory D. His self-named ACEW label came back into action back in 2014, and is now on a steady pace to the top of our elector charts. This new two-tracker kicks off with "Black Hole", a nervous, itchy sort of excursion that heads into the nastier side of dark acid thanks to its noxious bass bumps; the latter comes in the form of "Fall To Our Knees", a less tenebrous, more high-pace sort of tune that recalls the likes of Stingray and the Drexciya alliance. Nice.

  4. Satore - "Keep On" (5:31)
Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Review: The Abstract Eye is Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, a producer who releases music most using the monikers GB, The Reflektor, Frankie Reyes and Julian Abelar. Five prolific, soulful/melodic tracks originally released in 2011 on Valentine Connexion, now available again courtesy of Amsterdam's always reliable Rush Hour. The extraordinarily gifted Los Angeleno creates striking electronic songs here which integrate the technological with the spiritual and ancestral. There's respectful nods to Motor City greats like Japanese Telecom ("Cool Warm Divine") and John Beltran ("Nobody Else") on here. "Nobody Else Pt. 2" channels the cyclical/minimal soul of Internal Empire era Robert Hood: absolutely sublime!

  3. Analicious (3:48)
Review: In recent times, Adalberto's regular outings on the Addicted label he first graced in 2011 have become more and more sought-after. The fact that the pressings are limited - there are just 200 of these doing the rounds - probably helps, but it's the quality of the music that's always driven demand. He's predictably in fine form here, too, lacing woozy vocal samples and tactile riffs over a fizzing, late night deep house beat on superb opener "Slip & Slide". The German producer pushes things up a notch or two further on the Detroit techno-meets-foreboding deep house number "Leave Me Alone", before ripping his shirt off on the muscular, Dance Mania inspired techno madness of "Analicious".

  4. Ortus (6:06)
Review: For their next release, Berlin institution Watergate welcomes back two of Hamburg's finest: Adana Twins. Last seen on the label's last compilation, the duo returns with a bunch of stunners which the label itself best describes as 'low slung, infectious cuts blurring the lines between house and techno' and truly showcase the signature sounds of these Harbour City heroes. The original version of "Flower Of Cane" sees the duo follow their darkest route into the abyss yet with this dark, druggy and heaving man room groove that follows in the tradition of classic Ruede Hagelstein or even local legends like Stephan Bodzin. "Ortus" is an adrenalised exercise in mood lighting; which is perfect to make a transition with its elevating EBM style bassline. The third offering "Relentless" (feat Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish electro-poppers Whomadewho) offers yet more quality but if you ask us: it's all about Andre Lodemann's vocal mix, which is so incredibly dreamy and evocative as always.

Review: Make Love In Public Spaces is a new but not so mysterious offshoot of a label which will be familiar to anyone who has been to a certain erotically charged discotheque with a big heart in East London over the last 4 years. They launch with a three track release from Adesse Versions that recasts underground 90s classics of some vintage in his own inimitable style - the lead track is destined to get club play for months to come thanks to it's deft vocal hook. Adesse Versions is the anonymous alias of a techno producer with previous work for Ostgut Ton and Curle, showing his house side and who you will no doubt recognise from his most recent work for Trus'me's Prime Numbers label as Adesse.

Review: The perennially-search-engine-unfriendly Bristol beatman Admin makes his Boogie Cafe debut with this trio of beautifully loose jazz-tinted grooves. Both "Flute Loops" and "Drifting Away" err more on the house side of the spectrum with relaxed, lo-fi drums and humming pads and harmonics that you'd expect to find on Kompakt or perhaps Drumpoet. For an even freer funk sensation jump on "No Problemo". A sprightly jazz breakbeat funk chunklet, if you're aware of Farina's Mushroom Jazz series then you'll be all over this. File in your 'to play' tray.

  1. Admin - "Flute Loops" (DJ Nature remix) (5:46)
  2. Chezz - "Bossa" (Admin remix) (5:13)
Review: More from Bristol-based party-starters Boogie Cafe, whose recent releases have impressively straddled the fine line between tooled-up re-edits and all-original productions. On the A-side, they've persuaded New York-based Bristolian DJ Nature to remix current Bristol resident Admin. The man formerly known as DJ Milo does a terrific job, too, offering up a trippy chunk of loose, breakeat-driven, deep house disco that boasts serious amounts of energy. On the reverse, Admin remixes Chezz's "Bossa", wrapping spacey synthesizer motifs and a killer synth bassline around a superbly fluid and crispy broken-house groove. It's a seriously soulful interpretation, and arguably the stronger of the two tracks.

"Daddy's Groove" is a perfect summer heater with its laid back horns that ooze over the wah wah licks and strutting rim-shots. "Let Me Be Your Lover" takes more of a Latin approach with its upbeat rhythm and bossa tendencies. Listen out for those cosmic guitars in the background... Dreamy business.

Review: Building on the heat of last year's "Devil Made Me Do It", Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy returns with more smoking jazz fusions. "Red Light District" is as hot and illicit as the title suggests thanks to its prominent drums and heated horn work. "The Game Of Love" plays the perfect counter with its much softer, sentimental swoons and loungey dynamics. Instant summer soul soothers.

The Berlin based producer and co head of No Matter What (with Scot James Johnston) and Closer To Truth (with Brit David Nicol) serves up some more of his timeless classic house jams here on Pocket Money: an independent label based out of Manchester that's dedicated to releasing modern underground house music with rhythm and soul, influenced by New York, Detroit and Chicago. This follows up a great release by Polish producer Soul Habitat. On the A side it's all about the raw NYC basement vibe of "A-Dubz #3" taking you all the way back to the glory days of The Red Zone. On the flip, the uplifting garage sounds of "A-Dubz #7" are reminiscent of classic Junior Boys Own while the thumpin' "A-Dubz #9" has that undeniably Kerri Chandler vibe happening. Tip!

Review: The last single Air released before Moon Safari catapulted them to a league of their own, "Le Soleil Est Pres De Moi" hasn't been repressed since 2004. Revived and repolished for Record Store Day (and its 20th anniversary), both cuts hint at the deep dreams and emotions the band were about to delve into. The remixes have matured impeccably, too. Dan The Automator's woozy west coast beats remain just as smoky while Chateau Flight's sweet percussive almost shamanic perspective can still take floors to new dimensions to this date. Don't let the sun set on this one.

Review: Although best known as the lead singer of well-regarded Japanese funk-soul band O.A.S.B, Amy Akaoka has long dreamed up recording a salsa album in the style of '60s and '70s pianist and bandleader Larry Harlow. This tasty two-track 7" single is her first release in the style - the album will appear later in the year - and is as summery, breezy and life affirming as you'd expect. She begins with "Tu Jamas", where male backing vocals, jaunty pianos and her own passionate lead vocal ride a sweat-soaked salsa rhythm. Review: Straight from '79, "We Like To Party" is an in-house Washington block party anthem from Carl Maxx Kidd's Al & The Kidd Records collective. Loaded with boogie drive from the relentless pianos and percussion and raw funk from the lavish bass thrills and runs, this more than testifies to its Go Go title.
