  4. The Drum Thunder Suite (6:43)
Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

  4. Endless Summer (Soulphiction remix) (5:17)
Review: To date, Swiss trio Alma Negra has carved a successful niche as makers of heavily percussive 12" singles that look to the rhythms of Africa for inspiration. This outing for Heist Recordings draws on many similar influences, but shuffles further towards original production than their rework style back catalogue. Opener "Afrorleans" is a jaunty trip into shuffling Afro-house territory in the company of a cabal of Cajun musicians, while "Luanda Dub" is a booming, bass heavy late night trip full of swirling vocal samples and densely layered drum hits. Flip to the B-side for the party-starting Afro-disco/deep house fusion of standout "Endless Summer" and a cracking Soulphiction remix of the same track that pushes a rubbery disco bassline to the fore to devastating effect.

Techno
  1. Outer Rim (13:34)
  2. Region 114 (12:54)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Alpha Delta Division, the little-known partnership of Marcus Butavicius and Theo Babacas. Remarkably, Outer Rim is their first single since 1999, when they delivered a double-pack of sleazy, late night TB-303 techno on Dirty Acid Tracks. As comebacks go, it's pretty good. There's something particularly dirty, sweaty and metallic about the hypnotic flipside "Region 114"; although they've abandoned the trademark acid lines, it has a similarly intoxicating feel to their previous work. Even better is A-side "Outer Rim", which sees the duo peppering a titanium clad, kick drum-driven techno groove with hazy audio textures, intergalactic electronics and drifting melody lines.

Review: Over the course of his 11-year career, Ambivalent has already notched up releases on (deep breath) Kompakt Extra, Ovum, Minus, Valence, Cocoon and Last Night On Earth. Here he makes his debut on Enemy LTD, kicking things off with the metallic techno-funk brilliance of "Drag". The original, a no-nonsense blend of dexterous percussion programming, sludgy bass and complimentary electronics - is given a dark and distorted, no-holds-barred makeover by Amotik, while Dustin Zahn delivers a sparkling, intergalactic interpretation. Fittingly, Ambivalent finishes things off with "Buck", where wavering riffs and looped noises ride a thrusting, kick-drum dominating rhythm track.

Review: Last spotted burning hearts as Amberflame on Claremont 56, Theomatic boss Andrei Zakharov dusts off his AN-2 controls for three blissful, starlit downbeat instrumentals. "Sigint" slithers and writhes with salubrious, warm soapy levels of liquid funk while "Mint" is a slow-motion jog through a field at sunrise, living up to every fresh and lush connotation its title suggests. "Dusky Downtown" adds a little warped mysticism as the bassline seems to fall over the sludgy breaks and the synths melt in the spaces between. To top it all off, Andrei also throws in a chunkier, slightly more upbeat Amberflame remix, too. Safe travels.

Review: Andres' return with the second La Vida 12" reaffirmed our belief that there's no-one out there doing it quite like the former Slum Village DJ. Second Time Around has the same insouciant, dusty charm that characterised New For U, the first drop on the Detroit deity's La Vida imprint, with the title track instantly entering the canon of house classics that change the shape of a party as soon as the needle hits the groove. The shimmying beats and cooing vocal snippets on "Skate This Way" work alongside captivating string samples. Flip over for some eloquent beatdown ("Second Time Around") and shuffling deep house exotica ("Hart Plaza").

Review: Anom Vitruv prefers to opt for mystique in everything that he does. By that, we mean that not only is he still a mysterious presence as a producer, but his music is equally glazed in a sort of hazy, opaque glow that shape-shifts between house and techno with the dexterity of a feline. The artist returns to Canada's Total Stasis for the label's eighth outing, and this one is an even deeper excursion compared to his 2015 appearance for the label. All four tracks, preferred to be left nameless, are largely non-genre, and it's difficult to pin them down into concrete shapes but that's exactly what is so unique about Vitruv's sonic experiments. While they might not work to full effect in the middle of a house race, they certainly have their own use and identity; the sounds are loose, sparse but filled with movement and sway, while the harmonies themselves recall the organic textures of field recordings and analogue equipment. A beautiful amalgamation of downtempo, new age and house, this is one producer who is doing things his own way. Gorgeous stuff.

Review: The boys behind South London Analogue Material return with their fifth edition (following up a great previous edition by ABSL) with some brutalist and no holds barred techno. Ansome and Ossian go for the jugular right from the get go on the pulverizing onslaught of "Butch" while Ayacarna's remix up next takes the track into pure sonic noise terror. On the flip, the lo-fi and cyclical grind of "Buck" calls to mind early Mills or Regis and the PDL remix up next provides the most subtle moment on the record on this deep and hypnotic slow burner which was a real treat we must say.

Review: The Bobby Hamilton Quintet Unlimited changed paid homage to the Greek gods in the mid 70s with this unique one-off offering. "Ecology" is a sweet, rolling soul slice with glistening guitars and a velvet almost Sun-Ra style jazz aesthetic. "Anubis" is more of a driving, evocative Troubleman-style groove with vocals that build and gather momentum around each other with an almost gospel-like sensation. Powerful... As always from Athens Of The North.

Review: After making an intriguing start with a 12" from Hephaestus last year, the god-minded Olympos label returns with Apollo at the helm. Quite whether this music is in fact the handiwork of mythical deities remains to be seen, but it does result in some fantastic techno. "Ena" is a proper trance-inducing workout full of undulating synths and nagging percussive threads, while "Dyo" goes even further into intricate beat patterns and spooky atmospherics. "Tria" opens the sound out into a blissful trip through ambient techno with a backbone, while "Tessera" places more emphasis on mellow chord pulses to stake its own claim on this 12" of advanced techno explorations.

Here he hits a new chapter with his brand new label Beatnik Boulevard, a place for even further, farer out fusions and considerations. This potentially Lord Of The Flies-referencing EP sets the scene and gives us high hopes for the future... Groaning drain bass and barbed synth bliss on "Conch Shell Motives", 23rd century b-boy funk on "Holistic Rider" and woozy, jazzy dub on "Glass Eye". This was slated to be the 4th in his Glyph series, a raw and freaked out exercise in pumping, tweaked-out midwest techno. Each of these records featured 4 tracks cut at 45rpm to create a true play-at-your-own-speed adventure. Since their release, the original Glyph 12""s have become timeless tools in the bags of the most respected techno jocks. We are happy to say that after a 15 years hiatus the drought is over. Review: That's right, folks, this ain't no reissue! When the names Chiwax and Robert Armani come together, heads instantly turn and think about what year the tunes might be from, but these four house killers are from late 2016, and it's clear that Armani has absolutely no intentions of slowing down any time soon. "BacardI" has the essence of golden era Armani, but there's something more subtle at play, an polished aesthetic that dives deeper into modern techno while retaining all of his original style and flair; the lead tune "Fourty Nine" reinvents the classic Chi-town sound and bursts through the place with a minimal sort of guise. Over on the B-side, "Give You All My Love" slams some hard-ass drums over a skeletal melodic rift and the man's classic use of repetitive vocal samples, which leaves "Track 2" to deliver that inimitable Armani acid...raw and uncompromising as when we first heard it. BIG!

Four tracks of dusty, loosely-hewn cuts ranging from the baggy, woozy pure jazz sentiment "Hold Me" and "Would You Tell Me About You" to the loopy chugging haze of "That He Man Of Hers" by way of the lolloping off-beat "One's Own Permanent Faith", Arnheim's fusion skills continue to explore unchartered territories remain on-point.

Review: Asa Moto duo Oliver Geerts and Gilles Noe impressed with last year's debut EP, the double A-side synth-pop delight that was "Stay Awake/Wanowan Efem". This follow-up for DeeWee, co-produced by label founders (and Soul Wax members) David and Stephen Dewaele, is every bit as impressive, even if its four tracks draw on a much wider palette of influences. Opener "System Naturae" wraps sharp, rave type stabs around a jaunty drum machine groove, deep melody flourishes and warped analogue bass, while "Make Me Prada" is an exercise in alien funk/ambient/synth-pop fusion. On the flip you'll find the bleep-laden analogue house thrust of "Athina", while closer "Syriacid" is a sweaty jog through acid-fired deep house pastures with wayward pop overtones.

Review: Lemmy Ashton made quite a splash with his first outing on his own TNC label last year, and now he's back to follow up with another salvo of premium heaters geared towards disco-friendly dancers. There's a chunky, looped up quality to "Silver Suitcase" with its insistent bass lick and slamming drums, but there's equal space for soul thanks to the string-loaded sample hook. By way of contrast "Lunaire" fires up the acid flare and heads straight into a babbling brook of 303-related goodness. "Amsterdam" rounds the EP off on a stomp, whipping up the kind of bombastic disco drama that would get Studio 54 moving were it in action today.

  2. Non Lasciarmi Andare (Regis C-Nova remix) (4:31)
Review: It's been a good week for Asylum, whose robust contributions to the Persistence's just-released third multi-artist EP have been picking up major plaudits. This limited-edition 7" single sees the unheralded producer mark his debut solo release with a decidedly spooky and foreboding chunk of industrial IDM. It boasts droning, fuzzy guitars and dystopian melody lines rising above a distorted, off-kilter drum rhythm. On the B-side, Downwards co-founder and '90s techno survivor Regis provides a remix that harnesses the inherent exoticism at the heart of Asylum's original while stripping back some of the darker elements that make the original version such a moody listen. His sparse but rolling drums are particularly impressive.

  3. Asymmetric + Limit - "Transzendental" (7:49)
  4. Asymmetric + Limit - "Jazz Is..." (6:35)
Review: Limit and Asymmetric are in fact both the work of St. Petersburg-based producer Evgeniy Sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary D&B productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. "Stormy" is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and "Quarantine" is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. The B-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of "Transzendental" and the soulful yet ruff mood of "Jazz Is..." making a smart counterpoint to the heavier A side.

  2. From Dusk Till Dawn (feat Daddy Freddy - TMSV remix) (5:20)
Review: Three years on from his last appearance on wax, Guido van der Brink dusts down the Atiq aliases and returns with something suitably heavy: a club-ready D&B smasher featuring the syllable-a-nanosecond rap of soundsystem culture legend Daddy Freddy. Van der Brink's original version, a weighty fusion of bustling breakbeats, ten-ton sub-bass, moody electronics and echo-laden reggae style stabs, can be found on the A-side, with TMSV handling remix duties on the flip. It's a sizeable rework built around a seriously sustained sub-bass assault and beats that sit somewhere in between Exit style experimental D&B and weighty dubstep.
