  4. Into A Liquid Broken Space (5:15)
Review: Last autumn, Andrea La Pietra impressed with a debut double-pack on Melliflow that variously doffed a cap to Detroit futurism, jack-tracks, off-kilter electro and deep techno. Unsurprisingly, this follow-up EP boasts a similar amount of dancefloor eclecticism. After beginning with the bleeps, wobble bass and funk-fuelled tech-house beats of "Theoretically", he variously doffs a cap to classic Swag material (the undulating machine funk of "Dream Catcher", deep and woozy house ("Random Continuity"), and UK garage-influenced electro (the sub-heavy, funk-fuelled surge of "Into A Liquid Broken Place"). Happily, it all sounds club ready, with the latter track sounding like a late night anthem in the making.

  1. Clone (8:08)
  2. Defense (6:47)
  3. Piranha (6:06)
Review: British techno legend Dave Angel has returned. The Rotation Records head honcho has teamed up with forward thinking Los Angeles label Halocyan Records for a brilliant EP aptly titled Incoming. On opening track "Clone" you'll be mesmerised by this veteran producer's knack for some of the best hi-tech soul this side of Detroit; this track is awash in hypnotizing pads, tight rhythm patterns and strong energy throughout. On the flip, "Defense" is aimed squarely at the dancefloor on this adrenalised and funky escapade full of cyclical chords, driving bass and tough enough drums; after all, this is the man known for his legendary Twisted Funk night back in the day with Darren Emerson. Finally, things get a bit more uplifting and tech house with this feelgood vibes of "Piranha" taking you back to the late nineties where fellow producers Stacey Pullen, Sound Patrol and Terry Francis likewise pushed new frontiers.

  3. Majnoon (5:00)
  4. Ma'afunk (3:55)
Review: Debutants Anony and Mous (we see what they've done there) describe themselves as "international men of mystery" who hold "multiple personalities" and divide their time between the Middle East and Europe. On this first 12", they serve up a quartet of eccentric edits of thoroughly obscure old cuts from around the world. They begin with a dash of cheeky Arabic disco (the wonderfully camp "Pyramid Disco"), before reworking a post-punk era fusion of winding synthesizer lines, low-slung bass and dense North African percussion ("Nefertiti's Blues"). Over on the B-side, check the restless percussion rolls, trigger-switch synths and rubbery funk bass of "Majnoon" and the high octane thrills of "Ma'afunk", where wild, wobbly synth lines wrap themselves around layered drum beats. File under: "brilliantly bizarre".

  3. Lost (6:12)
  4. Mama Loves You (6:03)
Review: Having been approved by labels as respected as Underground Quality and Autoreply, Brazilian producer Apoena returns to his Allnite label with yet more of that pure and heartfelt deep house music for those who like it classic and classy. "I Know You" punches and tickles in all the right places with its dreamy keys, soulful vocal lick and rock solid drum lines, while "Tristeza Nao Tem Fim" heads into even more blissed-out territory with its rolling groove and heavy-lidded chords. "Lost" has a solid bottom end thrust that wouldn't sound out of place on a Mike Huckaby record, and "Mama Loves You" brings more of that sweet, laid back, feel good feeling to finish up this impeccable collection of house jams.

Review: After making an intriguing start with a 12" from Hephaestus last year, the god-minded Olympos label returns with Apollo at the helm. Quite whether this music is in fact the handiwork of mythical deities remains to be seen, but it does result in some fantastic techno. "Ena" is a proper trance-inducing workout full of undulating synths and nagging percussive threads, while "Dyo" goes even further into intricate beat patterns and spooky atmospherics. "Tria" opens the sound out into a blissful trip through ambient techno with a backbone, while "Tessera" places more emphasis on mellow chord pulses to stake its own claim on this 12" of advanced techno explorations.

Review: The first release on our was / is sublabel, Glyph03 was intially set for release in 2002 on Charles Noel's (aka Archetype) 21/22 Corporation. This was slated to be the 4th in his Glyph series, a raw and freaked out exercise in pumping, tweaked-out midwest techno. Each of these records featured 4 tracks cut at 45rpm to create a true play-at-your-own-speed adventure. Since their release, the original Glyph 12""s have become timeless tools in the bags of the most respected techno jocks. We are happy to say that after a 15 years hiatus the drought is over. Stay tuned for more from Archetype, Glyph and 21/22 Corporation on was / is.

Review: The legendary Spaniard Juan Rico (Reeko) aka Architectural on Maceo Plex's Ellum Audio? We're just as perplexed (no pun intended) as you are! But if this is welcoming a sudden change of direction for the label, then we're all for it. Expanding on previous efforts, Rico further explores the dubbier shades of hypnotic techno once again for the Heaven Can Wait EP. "Dream Driver" opening proceedings in a droney and trance inducing fashion, with main room/pre-peak time adrenaline in mind. It's a more subdued, deeper and minimal affair on the rather lush atmospherics of "Hidden" while on the flip we've got "Surreal Restaurant"; which is most likely inspired by grabbing a doner kebap after a long hight of clubbing in the German capital and musically it's fully of icy, cavernous delay drenched aesthetics drifting off into nice trails of reverb.

  4. Track 2 (6:15)
Review: That's right, folks, this ain't no reissue! When the names Chiwax and Robert Armani come together, heads instantly turn and think about what year the tunes might be from, but these four house killers are from late 2016, and it's clear that Armani has absolutely no intentions of slowing down any time soon. "BacardI" has the essence of golden era Armani, but there's something more subtle at play, an polished aesthetic that dives deeper into modern techno while retaining all of his original style and flair; the lead tune "Fourty Nine" reinvents the classic Chi-town sound and bursts through the place with a minimal sort of guise. Over on the B-side, "Give You All My Love" slams some hard-ass drums over a skeletal melodic rift and the man's classic use of repetitive vocal samples, which leaves "Track 2" to deliver that inimitable Armani acid...raw and uncompromising as when we first heard it. BIG!

Review: William Arnaldo Smith has released everywhere from Greta Cottage Workshop, Smallville and UntilMyHeartStops. We've heard the great effort that was the label's inaugural release entitled Good Music Hips, Bad Music Fists E.P. but he appears to have backdated this release as NATURIST 000. "Ceramics" displays the producer's usual 'airy' and organic deep house sound while "Heritage On The Sign" has faint Oriental aesthetics over its broken house beats and lush vintage synths. Finally on the flip is the breathtaking ambient journey "Sleeping Assault" full of splendid bell textures and emotive keys floating away in trails of endless reverb.

And they're doing so with this exclusive vinyl-only four piece that covers some of the finest corners of house music known to man. Art Of Tones gets busy on the loose drums and slappy bass, DJ Spinna puts a new twist on a classic rising hook while Sean McCabe takes us right back to Nu Yorican soul heaven. Corrado Bucci closes the book with a dusty, pensive hypnotic stomper that will have you locked in seconds. Here's to another half a decade and a bit.

Review: Last year, Dutch producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien impressed with a couple of contributions to EPs on Prologue and Tikita under the Artefakt alias. Here, they've been given a chance to showcase their sound further, via a debut 12" for the mighty Delsin imprint. As the title suggests, they're stargazing sorts, and all three tracks feel like they were inspired - in part, at least - by the original futurist ethos of Detroit techno. Of course, there are other influences - see the tumbling, intelligent techno style synthesizer melodies and acid flashes of "Transit", or the attractive depth and ambient chords of "From Our Mind To Yours" - but these simply serve to enhance the prevailing mood.

Review: More from Liverpool-based analogue freak ASOK, a producer who is quickly becoming "Mr Reliable". Inner Circle marks his first appearance on Lobster Theremin offshoot Mork and sees the Scenery Records founder showcase a quartet of analogue deep house jams. Both "Inner Circle" and "Planetfall" are marked out by an appealing combination of spacey chords, Motor City electronics and on-point - if pleasingly off-kilter - drum machine programming. Intergalactic melodies, drawn-out sub bass and Chicago influenced machine drums come to the fore on the superb "30 Hours", while closer "Terran Envoy" sees out hero make merry with distorted drums, ghostly chords and some seriously trippy vocal samples.

Review: With the dust of their new album Fenix still settling, Far Out and Azymuth flex back 37 years for one of their finest and most indelible records in their illustrious and consistent career: "Dear Limmertz" slaps and pops with the same ridiculous soaking wet slap bass it did when it first blew your mind. With dreamy chords, that yearning vocodered vocal and the pensive prelude thrown in, it's still an incredible one-of-a-kind record. And that's before we get to the way-ahead-of-its-time breakbeat and deep groove of "Maracana". This is still piping hot and always will be.

Each cut hitting with a classic Chicago bounce and layers of Fingers-style uplift and hope in the melodic layers, we're consistently tapped into a feeling and narrative that's both on-point and heavy in heritage. From the daydream twinkles of "Porno" to the soft-focus jazzier twist of "Let's Play", this pushes all the right buttons.

Review: UK IDM duo Steve Rutter and Michael Golding aka B12 continue on with their new found winning streak and another brilliant release on their FireScope imprint. "In Vain" features Yonii's sultry vocals accompanied a minimal and bass heavy arrangement that calls to mind the 'grey area' experiments by the Autonomic crew several years back while also on the A side we've got the lush dark ambient journey "Shotgun" which perfect compliments the vibe of this vocalist's truly amazing vocal range. On the flip "Sympathy Beatz" deconstructs UK bass music with subtle pop-inflections much like dBridge did some time ago on this catchy number while "Moth Beatz" distills the A side track into its essence brilliantly.

  4. The Future Sound Of London - "Monolith" (4:00)
Review: The seventh and final instalment of De:Tuned's brilliant Unboxed Brain series - an unashamed tribute to 1990s IDM and ambient techno featuring contributions from many of the artists who defined that scene - is predictably special. It features a slew of new remixes of previously released tracks, plus "Monolith", a previously unreleased ambient track from the Future Sound of London that's every bit as weird, wonderful and out there as the duo's greatest work. Elsewhere, Kirk Degiorgio (as Future/Past) and Mark Broom both drag B12's "World's End" towards the dancefloor (the latter providing a punchy electro re-make), while The Black Dog provides a brilliantly blissful, string-drenched ambient interpretation of Scanner's "Eros".
