  3. Each Day Made New
Review: With the original pressing of the 2013 release long gone but still in great demand, Ornate is thrilled to revisit Leif's Each Day Made New EP and give it a lavish new repress on violet coloured vinyl. When the record originally dropped it received support from artists as well-respected as Larry Heard, Soul Capsule, Jane Fitz and Rhythm Plate, and continues to be spun regularly to this day.

Since then Leif has been on an incredibly productive run, releasing his debut album Dinas Oleu on Fear Of Flying as well as singles on Sudden Drop and Idle Hands. UntilMyHeartStops, the label he runs with Joe Ellis, has continued to build in notoriety with celebrated releases from Steevio, Arnaldo and Duckett, while Leif himself is preparing to release his much-anticipated second LP through the imprint soon.

It's the perfect time to be reminded of a true gem from the London-based artist's back catalogue, from the warm, ear-snagging chords of "Circumstance 4" to the low slung downtempo funk of the title track, and give a few more eager heads the chance to grab a copy.

Review: Arriving five years after the London trio's last album 'Co-Exist', this third effort shows a band ready to make a bold step on from the sound that haunted radio and TV links alike around the start of this decade. And in what could be said to be a move from innocence to experience, they're doing so with hitherto unrevealed confidence and chutzpah..'I See You' expands on their trademark intimate melancholia with considerable finesse, yet longtime fans shouldn't worry too much about them losing their gloomy charm in the process - more so this is a band brandishing an expanded palette where once they were content to paint their room black.

Review: Chicago legend Mike Dunn presents We R Tuesday Nights Vol #2 with three absolutely kick ass edits for serious DJ use only. The first track is a crafty cut-up of Prince's classic "Controversy". Yes, there's been many others before it, but this one is cleverly executed for maximum dancefloor satisfaction. Next up is a re-splice of a certain track called "I'm An Indian, Too" by Don Armando's 2nd Ave. Rumba Band which we found curious (yet not altogether unpleasant!) and finally we can never get enough of The Jackson 5 right? "The Life Of The Party" is presented here with the right amount of pizazz, yet again displaying Dunn's deft hand for revising classics for modern audiences.

Review: It's been a quiet year for Kai Alce, but finally the Atlanta house hero returns with a new pair of tracks that will surely satisfy any fans of his instinctive, expressive take on club-ready deep house. This latest drop comes on Sounds Of The City, which has also supported the likes of Walt J and Brian Harden. "Just Wanna" is a sure and steady workout peppered with woozy chords and a nagging vocal lick, but "Movin Thru" is surely the record's stand-out moment. With just the right balance between the edgy chords and the rounded bassline, it's a simple cocktail that plays to Alce's strengths perfectly.

Review: Fresh from an acclaimed outing on FACES, Giovanni Damico pops up on Marcel Vogel's inspired Lumberjacks In Hell label. The Italian producer is naturally in fine form here, with A-side "Tanzania" - a breezy, house-friendly rework of what sounds like a Tanzanian boogie cut - being one of the most addictive and life-affirming edits we've heard this month. You'll find more wiggling synthesizer lines on the deliciously dreamy and evocative deep house shuffler "I Need Me", while "Are You Somebody" is a successful exercise in subtly beefing up a low-slung disco-funk number. As if that wasn't enough to set the juices flowing, he completes a brilliant E.P with the jazz-fuelled deep house smokiness of "Humans After All".

Review: Monsieur Blue is already getting some keen internet heads casting their theories about the identity of this debutant producer, but while they fret over such issues the rest of us will be getting down to this impeccable selection of deep grooving wares. This is razor sharp club music surely crafted by someone with experience, as the muscular thrust of "Track 1" suggests. There's a rugged charm in amongst the minimal disposition of the beats, which stands in contrast with the aqueous delights of "Track 2" or the housey funk of "Track 3". It's high grade dance music for DJs and party people, plain and simple.

Review: For those of a certain age, the opening seconds of 808 State's 1991 rave anthem "In Yer Face" - a combination of memorable melody lines and loved-up chords - are still capable of setting the pulse racing. Bicep have taken on the task of updating Graham Massey and company's anthem for a new generation, serving up two fresh interpretations. Wisely, they emphasize the spine-tingling goodness of the Manchester outfit's chord progressions on their A-side remix, getting rougher, tougher and weightier as the track progresses. Their flipside acid dub - where electro-inspired breakbeats, heavy bass and floatation tank melodies are expertly combined with ragged TB-303 lines - recalls the similarly-minded thrills of DJ Parrot and Mark Brydon's 'Sunshine Dub' of DJ Mink's early Warp slammer "Hey! Hey! Can U Relate?".

Review: Live and direct from the slaughterhouse; Stabil Elite / BAR / The Kloom member Lucas Croon returns to Themes For Great Cities with his first full solo EP. Riddled with spacious kosmiche tones throughout, "Urania" sets the tone. A slo-mo sojourn on the trans Europe express, it succeeds in easing you into the EP and hitting you hard with rich synth textures. "Flotenmelodie" is a much more abstract affair with a delicious drone / wall of sound aesthetic that morphs and mutates and twists itself inside out for three minutes before lilting guitars completely change the atmosphere. Finally "Turkischer Tee" thrusts us back into reality with a heady dancefloor jam that's kinda reminiscent of Todd Terje's remix of Simon Baker's "Plastik" in its momentum but laced with heaps more musical elements.

Review: Given his impressive track record, hopes are naturally high for Bonobo's sixth album, Migration, which is his first full-length since 2013. Happily, it's a majestic affair, with the producer delivering another sumptuous set of tracks. It was partly inspired by an extended period musing on the nature of personal identity, and the role that nationality plays in that. This concept is translated via thoughtful lyrics, and songs that draw musical influence from the four corners of the globe. It's not a big stylistic leap, of course - his bread and butter remains yearning, emotion-rich downtempo music built around gently jazzy grooves and impeccable live instrumentation - but given that few artists do it better than Bonobo, we'll forgive him for that.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: According to their online profile, Parisian label Home Invasion is a concept based on the core ideals of house music. Inspired by twice weekly visits to his favourite record store in Paris, Franck Roger claims "this is 21st Century music influenced by interacting with the real world." Here he calls upon Spanish producer Carlos Sanchez of Lowwaxx fame, who serves up some tough and dusty all analogue house on the Alphard EP and the title track is testament to this. On "Raw Behaviour" he gets more raw and deeper with booming 808 business, emotive chords and dubby elements. On the flip, he saves the best for last on "Paradigm" which again goes for dubbier low end dynamics and dark atmosphere that is perfect for the afterhours.

Review: The final single to be taken from Moneyshot and Rackabeat's hugely successful debut album As We Do Our Thing, "You Wouldn't know" and "Special People" close the LP cycle with fitting party spirit. The former is a dense weave of horn samples and well-known vocal hooks over some deliciously swashbuckling beats while the latter is a sweatier funk groove that's reminiscent of the classier end of big beat's golden era but with more original funk spirit. Rumour has it they're already deep into their second album...

Here, Must Have Records gets in on the act, delivering a double 12" featuring four previously released classics - including a very early appearance from soul man Gregory Porter on the brilliant "Tomorrow People" - and a quartet of previously unheard gems from the archives. Highlights from the latter category include two chunks of heavy electro/deep house fusion ("Zu Mountain (Dub)" and "Inbetweener's Dilemma"), and the swirling, bass-heavy bump of "Freak Me (Dub)".

Review: The latest missive from Sweden's fine Local Talk label is a multi-artist affair, with fine contributions from label regular Sameed, Chicago legend Jamie 3:26, and rising star Masalo. The latter two join forces on fabulous A-side "Testify", a low-slung, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around righteous rhythms, impassioned, gospel-influenced blues vocals, and killer Clavinet parts. On the flip, Sameed's first contribution is a riff on the same basic cut, utilizing the same samples but venturing further towards dirty, late night disco territory. He also provides a fine bonus in the shape of "Dusty Jazz", a sample-heavy jazz-house workout complete with wavering horns, rich bass and twinkling electric piano solos.

The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Review: Detroit techno veteran Kelli Hand returns to action with her first EP of original productions since 2015. More impressively, it's the first volume in her Project series since the tail end of the 1990s (though, as nerds will point out, Project 5 was reissued in 2014). A-side "Boiler Room Teaser" feels like a product of the late 1990s, combining as it does no-nonsense Motor City techno drums and growling, razor-sharp riffs. There's a similarly dark, booming, warehouse-friendly feel to "K.Hand Live", a house/techno hybrid full of weighty kick drums and sparkling, spacey electronics. Curiously, the EP's other track - "You Stepped Right (K.Hand Re-Edit)" - is a pitched up, slightly beefed up rework of Melba Moore disco classic "You Stepped Into My Life".

This latest missive - the fourth in the series to date - is also shrouded in mystery. This much we know: it contains two versions of the same untitled track. The A-side is crisp and sharp, with an increasingly ragged acid bassline, slowly emerging chord progressions and clanking drum machine hits combining. It feels a little like a techno head's take on analogue deep house, if that makes sense. The flipside version moves further towards straight-up techno territory, with ghostly pads seemingly floating above a denser, chunkier rhythm track.

As usual, the featured deep house cuts tend towards the classic and U.S-inspired, variously doffing a cap to New Jersey, New York and Chicago, via ear-pleasing organ riffs (see DJ Steaw's excellent "East Orange"), soulful vocal snippets (Teflon Dons), clear boompty influences (Tristan Da Cunha's Salt 'n' Pepa-sampling "Hit Up On This"), and breezy disco (Ebony Cuts). Franck Roger's contribution, "For Me", is also one of his sleaziest, basement-friendly tracks to date.

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: The Vinyl Only label comes from Ant Plate (of Rhythm Plate notoriety), and following some turns from Ant himself as Yse Saint Laur'ant the label branches out to welcome brand new entity (or quite possibly alias) Bubbadog to the playing field. The quality of the music eschews any notions of who did what, as the tumbling Latin tones of "Alma" meet with the laid-back, handclap-heavy bliss of "Threshold". "Boodoo" on the flip deals in a more peppy kind of offbeat house, and then "Talkin' Talkin'" and "Harry" drop down into a classic bit of funk breaks business.

Review: Psychemagik's Danny McLewin doesn't do things by halves. His latest crate-digging compilation, Ritual Music, is stretched across three loosely themed double-packs. The first to land, Beach, gathers together obscure, sun-kissed gems from the depths of his vast record collection. In other words, it could be considered "Balearic", an assumption given credence by the presence of JM Black's quirky, White Isle disco fave "Lipstick (Shout)". Other highlights - and let's face it, they're abundant - include the deep space electrofunk of Tony Wilson's "Hangin' Out In Space", and the discordant, odd-funk insanity of Zru Vogue's "Do The Zru". Like Pokemon, you gotta catch 'em all.

Review: As always, Washington DC' Peoples Potential Unlimited have resurfaced another rare-as-hens-teeth boogie number and, while we are madly in love with this label, we need to appreciate more just how important they've been to the survival of funk music in recent years. This time, it's Donald Walker's only EP to grace their catalogue, an artist who went by the name of Dohnnie on his solo projects. "Dancin Is Your Love" exudes funk from every corner, backed by a badman bassline, some freaky guitar strings, and Walker's own seductive disco tone. It's a one-track EP precisely because this tune deserves to grace a whole side of a 12". Utterly unmissable, and heavily recommended.

Review: Music From Memory's Second Circle offshoot - an imprint designed to release fresh productions, rather than the reissues that the parent label is more famous for - reaches release number five, with Aussie audio explorer Tornado Wallace at the helm. He begins in typically atmospheric fashion with "Falling Sun", a lolloping, sunset-friendly cut that peppers a slack-tuned, tribal-influenced drum pattern with bubbly, eyes-closed melodies and spacey chords. His penchant for African-influenced drums is explored further on the dense but hazy "Singing Planet" and "Kakadu", where the bongo-heavy rhythms eventually come to the fore after a spellbinding, ambient introduction.

Review: Soundway has high hopes for the third album by "underground super-producer" Lord Echo. That set is due to appear in early 2017, and as a taster, they've decided to drop this fine single. "Just Do You" features the vocals of Mara TK of Electric Wire Hustle fame, and is a deliciously cheery chunk of Caribbean inspired dub disco indulgence. It's accompanied by a fine Dub - which, naturally, features more tape delay and a tougher, stripped back groove - and an instrumental version. There's also a bonus cut in the shape of "Only You", which features regular Lord Echo collaborator Toby Laing, best known as a member of globe-trotting Kiwi supergroup Fat Freddy's Drop.

Review: The Spacetalk label returns with this fine compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

"Get Lit" joins the dots between the two in true lo-fi glory as a weirded out vocal loop grumbles beneath a series of clunky filtered layers that open out majestically as the track progresses. Beam us up Swagger.

Review: After a very quiet 2016, in which he released just one low-key, digital-only EP, Ilario Alicante returns with two no-holds-barred techno heaters. Title track "Virgo Storm" is particularly alluring, combining as it does bustling machine drums, melancholic melodies that seem to tumble across the soundspace, and just the right amount of subtle acid tweaks. Adventice turns that track into a straight-up, peak-time techno thrasher, before Alicante serves up a blistering chunk of bass-heavy, acid-flecked techno-funk ("Hypno"). British techno legend Mark Broom remixes that track, delivering an interpretation full of distorted drums, industrial textures, and razor-sharp acid lines.

Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

Review: Given his prolific nature, it's perhaps surprising to find that 5 is actually Medhi Djebali's debut album. The title was apparently chosen as both a nod to the fifth anniversary of his self-titled label, and as a reflection of the number of months it took the Parisian to record it. As you might expect, it's an enjoyable collection of largely club-friendly cuts, with Djebali offering nods towards Robsoul style tech-house ("Nineties Playground", "Mister Bastard"), spacey ambience ("Heartgroover", "The Other Night"), acid (the funk-fuelled "D.B Cooper", "God's Dreams"), and warm, early morning deep house ("Seven Blessings", "Ideal Dawn"). To round things off, he also includes a head-nodding chunk of dreamy instrumental hip-hop (John Dimas collaboration "Suzaku").

Review: The general consensus is that We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service, A Tribe Called Quest's sixth and final album, is something of a triumph, with many critics hailing it as the best full-length of 2016. It's certainly a fine set, full of their trademark musically rich backing tracks (enhanced, this time round, with a greater reliance on live instrumentation), conscious lyrics and distinctive, on-point vocal delivery. Given their legendary status within hip-hop, it's unsurprising to see a string of similarly high profile guests dotted throughout, with Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, Kayne West, Consequence, Jack White and Elton John (presumably in sampled form) all lending a hand. Even if you're only mildly interested in hip-hop, this should be essential listening.

Vienna's Sam IRL is abck with more sultry deep house sounds on the Melting Memories EP. The Sampling As An Art imprint continues its ascension as one of the finest new labels in highly intelligent dancefloor sounds. The title track is testament to this, "Forward (Interlude)" goes for some dusty hip
-hop dopeness and "Suave" merges sensibilites of both previous tracks wonderfully much like the Money $ex crew out of Berlin can. Final track "Calm" sounds vaguely familiar too: think Raw Cuts era Motor City Drum Ensemble.. and that's a compliment!

Review: Polybius Trax is the subsidiary label of Clasicos Del Ruido, both part of a conglomerate that've taken the last few years by storm. Whether it's malicious acid, electro-driven house, or even industrial techno, there is little that this imprint has done wrong since its first records began to appear on our shelves. The Polybius chapter is best known for the Moog Your Body series but, as of recent, new, collaborative 12"s have begun to surface from its underbelly. East London's Posthuman brothers appear alongside Romania's The Model, and the results are bountiful. The former's "Feel The Heat" is a dirty, no nonsense club destroyer backed by a powerful infusion of gargling bass tones, while the latter's "Get Up" brings us back to '89 - a rave-fuelled house bomb for the heads.
