  1. 816 To Nunhead (6:21)
  2. 78 To Stanley Bay (5:07)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Amadeus sees it's catalogue graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead. Title track and aside, "816 To Nunhead," is tinged with what's left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It's a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, "I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever." What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, "78 To Stanley Bay," a tune built behind the every looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aseeli, '78 To Stanley Bay' tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

Review: J Rocc is rightly hailed as one of the best DJs out there, in possession of a vast music knowledge and the skills to deploy it with party-killing effect behind the decks. Last year saw J Rocc launch the Funky Presidents Edits series with the first two 7"s selling out immediately! We expect a similar situation with this third volume which leads out with a killer edit of Earth Wind & Fire classic "Brazilian Rhythm". That classic vocal harmony meets an equally iconic drum break with J Rocc's edit mastery coming to the fore over the course of the cut. The Bonus Beats version on the flip means the more dextrous DJs out there might want to consider doubling up on this beauty.

Review: Seb Wildblood's impressive rise among the ranks hasn't gone unnoticed around these parts and, in fact, we've been keen listeners of his work; his rapid career progressions have even taken him to the legendary Skint Records, home to material by little producers by the name of Fat Boy Slim and X-Press 2. This time, however, he's gone more local and back to Church, his own imprint that has had an equally impressive rise to the top as of late. Jazz Vol.1 is a delightfully soft-spoken house excursion that cements Wildblood's status as a new name to watch out for in the UK deep house movement, and if you're into material by the Detroit big-hitters, you'll certainly enjoy this little bit of lo-fi house.

Review: Junktion is Hans Peeman from Nijmegen, Netherlands, co-founder/A&R at Outplay. The deeper side of house and everything that goes with it is his thing and The Wide Awake EP is good evidence of this. There's a real Thomas Bangalter style vibe to this EP, as evidenced on the low-slung disco loop goodness of the title track and "What We Are" following in suit, with more wicked sample cut ups rocking the night away on this funky groove. On the flip we've got "Don't Mess Up" which is perfect for those Summer open-air parties with its dusty arrangement and hands in the air vibe; the real highlight on here.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Australia is known for its Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, the vast desert wilderness and unique animal species including kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses; but is also known for its well-crafted music output and deep love for optimistic sensual tunes. This is the case here with the first release of a mysterious project called Ponzu Island, there is absolutely no info available on the artist, so let your ears judge without prejudice. His first effort comes in the form of a 3 track EP including "Super Koto", "Ponzu Beach" and "Ponzu Logic", they sound like if Morgan Geist and Todd Terje took some acid and locked themselves in a room with a sea view, a synth, and a computer. Welcome to Ponzu Island.

To complete the EP the label counted with Andras Fox, another Aussie who has already gained much respect for his simply-perfect micro house productions (btw don't miss his live set if you ever have the chance). Andras revisits the track "Super Koto" in the form of an extended mix with a slower bpm and his magic touch here and there. On the flip side Apersonal's local producer Trujillo does his usual thing remixing "Ponzu Logic", closing the EP into a deep and darker territory. By now you will be in the middle in the desert asking yourself how you got there..

Review: London's Archie Hamilton breaks away temporarily from his usual home of Fuse London to throw down some fine hi-tech minimalist grooves for prolific Frankfurt imprint Pleasure Zone. When considering that they've previously offered up the likes of Vid and Ali Nasser, you can appreciate the Romanian influence on this 12" too; Hamilton's sound is really developing well. On the A side "Some Kind Of Arrangement" has the funky and cyclical hypnotism that could have him likened to the likes of Barac while on the flip "First Refusal" is more deep down and drugged up; perfect for the morning set with its paranoid and low slung groove.

Review: The first ever Athens of the North 12" is a real pearler, presenting the unreleased full length mix of Symbol 8's classic disco burner "I Thought You Wanted To Dance." The track was originally pressed on 7" back in 1978, split down the middle with one part on each side, but it's a track that was made for the full 12" format and is done so here on a Full Midtown Mix. Charlie Adams versatile vocal flipping into falsetto with ease while the band holds the solid groove is a special thing. On the flip-side is a Shock Version of "I Thought You Wanted To Dance," which surfaced later and sounds very different, sitting pretty alongside a personal DJ Fryer favourite "Call Me". Essential as always.

Review: Rohan Walder clocks in for this third Randomer outing on Clone's Basement Series in as many years, with Concierge arriving as the Londoner's first 12" transmission of 2016. The template is pretty much laid down now for the Basement series and there is always some real gratifying techno to be found from those who step up to contribute. Title cut "Concierge" finds Walder's well-documented talent for crafting unique drum patterns really come to the fore on a dramatic, meaty production and sits well next to the more bugged out B-side. "Woodwork" is, in a word, trippy, leading out like Felix Da Housecat's "Kickdrum" before veering off down a wormhole of crazed percussive notes and mangled samples that gets increasingly crazier as it progresses - we really need to hear this one on a big system wow.

Review: Alex Piccone has been steadily releasing some quality minimal house since the late noughties for acclaimed imprints such as Cadenza, Bass Culture and Bosconi. For new imprint Yay he serves up the Frequency Switch EP which four cuts of reduced analogue house like on opening track "M9" emotive and jacking but covered in the right amount of dust and so emotive! "M8" is more uptempo and uplifting with its blip melody and hypnotising chords doing most of the work against a minimal backdrop. Finally on the flip "M6C" is the kind of rusted and decayed electro that Frenchman TC80 is pushing too at the moment and the kind of thing you might hear Oner Ozer or Binh playing out; it's very cool!

Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Review: It's been some two years since Paramida established Love On The Rocks. In that time, the label has put out some memorable material, including essential 12" singles from Telephones, Khidja and Fantastic Man. The time seems right, then, for Paramida to step up and deliver her first EP for the label. Tehran Bomb also marks the start of a new, occasional re-edit series. She begins with the intoxicating late night throb of "Beyond Katovl", where fluttering vocal samples and psychedelic electronics ride a bombastic, high-energy groove. It's a muscular affair, all told, but strangely intoxicating. Flipside "Ms Bombastic" sees Paramida reworking an early house workout, cleverly emphasizing the original track's surging percussion and killer bassline.

One of the label's main contributors, Autarkic, heralds a new dawn for Disco Halal with his debut album, Can You Pass The Knife?, signalling a switch to original music. The brainchild of Tel Aviv artist Nadav Spiegel, we first got a taste of Autarkic's potential for original material with a 12" for Phil South's Golf Channel last year and this album superbly picks up where that single left off. Autarkic lifts the cold wave template into the modern age with Can You Pass The Knife?, crafting six songs rife with the sort of emotive intensity that work perfectly on the dancefloor in the trademark Disco Halal fashion.

Review: Stenny has been one of Ilian Tape's most reliable and prolific artists over the last few years. Consume IV marks his fifth appearance of the Zenker brothers' imprint, and sees him joining the dots between hardcore-era breakbeat house, techno and UK garage. Opener "Lights On" brilliantly fuses together loose rave breaks and spacey deep house chords, while "Consumer's Tool" is a bumpin' garage roller complete with skipping New Jersey beats and bass-heavy British attitude. Stenny heads back towards standard techno territory on the heavy and hypnotic "Scanner", before breaking up the beats once more on the bruk-goes-to-Detroit-via-Sheffield loveliness of "Westward".

Up top, Hype teams up with Naughty NMX for a heavy duty tweak of James Brown classic "The Get Down" with the added weight to the drums really sounding fresh on a good system. Review: From the label: Jakarta based Jonathan Kusuma delivers a new EP on Cocktail d'Amore Music. After his European debut on Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliche, followed by a successful EP on Berlin's imprint Love On The Rocks, the Indonesian artist keeps carrying the vessel of the Far East sound. The title track Black Magic is a fat disco-tribal inspired groove that builds fast, eventually climaxing with a cloud of acid synths and mystical vocals. Japanese duo Mascaras, Chida and Cos/Mes' 5ive, straighten up the groove giving a 4/4 beats restyling. The result is a Proto-Techno, Trance influenced soundscape, for foggy late-night dancefloors. Urban Sorcery is an Italo inspired maze of proto-acid synthesizers, sounding like an enchanted concrete-covered forest. 90's house inspired Redvox is an experiment of cosmic influences. As the vocal becomes part of the groove, the long pads fuel this spaceship pushing it to the borders of time and space.

Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.

Review: Some 40 years after releasing his first material, Cerrone continues to deliver new music. As the title suggests, Afro sees the French disco legend paying tribute to African music, with the assistance of two rather special guests. Drummer Tony Allen makes his mark on the rather brilliant "2nd Chance", delivering the loose, swinging, booty-shaking rhythm that underpins Cerrone's trademark piano work, clipped funk guitars and grandiose orchestration. Makossa pioneer Manu Dibango assists on "Funk Makossa", which appears to be a killer new version of his 1972 classic "New Bell". Todd Edwards delivers a surprisingly reverential Afro-house revision of that track, while Mind Enterprises get all cosmic and dubbed-out on their deliciously spacey rendition of "2nd Chance".

The Dutch imprint launches their new initiative in impressive style with four powerful techno cuts from the elusive and mysterious Gesloten Cirkel. "Yamagic" opens on an expansive experimental Detroit tip, with the rough percussive edges a nice contrast to the crisper jacking qualities that run through the guttural acid flex of "Moustache". Proceedings change up on the flip with the scratched industrial wooziness of "Insummer" brilliantly offset by a crunching half step kick. "Slample" closes proceedings on a decidedly odd note, sounding like Moodymann remixing Neucleus at the bottom of a well.

It's the second instalment of the Club Jazz series with this 45 a Hungary vs France sound clash.Hungary easily wins this one thanks to the sublime rhythm that is "Bamba" by Dimenzio, an inimitable jazz-dance leviathan that manages to mash-up all the right elements of jazz together with something a little weirder and electronic - a truly supreme piece of music that is recommended to ANYONE. Marius Culter's "Diamant" is a high calibre jazz funk missile, and works beautifully as a stand-alone, but its somewhat swamped by the sheer quality of its counterpart. Recommended. Here, he finally gets a chance to show us what he can really do, unfurling his debut album on Workshop. Allegedly set for release on Move D's Source Records back in the day, Hidden By Leaves was shelved due to bankruptcy issues, however the lovable Dave Moufang recently re-discovered the DATs leading to Alfa's work being belatedly released here. It's a brilliantly inventive and enjoyable affair, with the eight tracks variously doffing a cap to deep electro, cut-and-paste sound collages, mood-enhancing ambient, high-tempo techno, early hardcore, deep house and Motor City futurism. The breadth and variety of the album is impressive, but what makes Hidden By The Leaves stand out is its' warmth and melodiousness.

Review: From the label: J Morrison smashed it with his debut track on Maximum Joy pt. 1, the highly addictive deep house cut 'Some Fella'. This mid tempo Afro-house track had that rare combination of being super deep - but with the power to rock any dance floor. The Freedom EP, J Morrison's first Full EP release is the same, and more. The lead track calls up a looped and filtered afrobeat sample that just keeps on giving. Reminiscent of Cottam's early work, and sure to be a hit in the sunshine of a festival stage or a dark club. "Stay High" is more driving, tribal, druggy affair that reminds us Peace Division in their prime. Late night heads down dance floor vibes, with a killer vocal sample that creates real magic. "Soft Play" is a deeper track and just like 'Some Fella' the arrangement and choice of samples merge create another floor friendly that will be a useful tool for a wide range of DJs. Alfresco Disco co-founder Lukas steps up for remix duties and flips the samples of Freedom for a more choppy, chicago style bumping house track - which rounds off the E.P rather nicely we think. We hope you think so too!

  1. Dial Me In (6:34)

  3. Work It Out (10:19)
Review: Bang! DFA slip out a brand new slab from Factory Floor, Nik Void and Gabe Gurnsey's first tangible release in well over a year. Dominic Butler may well have departed to explore some orally-fixated rhythmic projects with L/F/D/M, but Factory Floor remain a very potent proposition with Void and Gurnsey at the controls as Dial Me In ably proves. Bubbling 303 lines, industrial percussion and robotic, dead pan vocal parts meet on the title cut, with DFA smartly comparing it to the meeting point between Chris & Cosey, Phuture and Paranoid London. A subsequent club mix does what it says on the tin, whilst "Work It Out" sees a little of the playful devil in Factory Floor rear its head with superb results.

Review: The Sofrito label rarely, if ever, get is wrong, doesn't it? Once again, the London label bursts through the dance with two utterly steaming Haitian destroyers from Dominica's no.1, and these two cuts are bound to satisfy just about anyone into GOOD music. "Las Mal Parle" is a swinging, instantly hummable rhythm that you can safely leave on repeat for hours at a time, while "Jam Jam" is more of a Latino groove for the big ball dance - another stunner and a perfect companion to the beast that is the A-side. Another solid, timeless record from Sofrito.

Review: The new single by Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain is "Sittin' Here" taken from his last self titled album released last year. The original's spiritual Afro groove was sublime but gets some pretty sweet remixes by the likes of Boddhi Satva; whose rendition stays true to the original's vibe but injects it with another authenticity which is fantastic. The always impressive Atjazz gets onboard and provides his signature deepness to the track which is one of the highlights. On the flip another track from the album "Real Blues" gets a terrific remix by French powerhouse DJ Deep & Roman Poncet. Their exotic and powerful remix is reminiscent of their Sergie Rezza material and just sublime!

Review: Enzo Siragusa's Fuse London imprint is back with more top notch minimal grooves for the afterhours shift. Londoner Anthony DiFrancesco teams up with newcomer Samuel Bellis team up on the DB Productions project who serve us with some deep and rolling high fidelity grooves like "One Way To Pluto" which is paranoid and trance inducing; just perfect for the morning set for when things get weird. "Adderall" gives you a good kick just like its namesake; this one is more energetic and on the deep house tip but still loopy and hypnotic enough for perfect dancefloor dynamics. Finally "87-88" gets a remix by French deep house maestro Alexkid with label boss Siragusa himself and it's a good one: stripped, bass driven and functional.

Review: DJ Deep is back again, does this man ever sleep? After Sergie Rezza and The Adventist projects with partner in crime Roman Poncet, not to mention running Deeply Rooted and being such an in demand DJ after over 20 years on this scene: he's a right powerhouse. Cuts Volume 2 maybe a blunt name but there's no mistaking the blatant utility of this release: fully functional techno tools for maximum dancefloor impact! "Stressed" sounds like an excerpt from one of Jeff Mills notorious 909 drum solos while on the flip "Stressin'" chugs away in stripped yet hypnotic fashion with equally tough rhythms. Second B side cut "Surge" is the most restrained but probably our favourite, reminding us of the steely and infectious funk grooves of early noughties Neapolitan techno. Tip!

Review: Lars Bartkuhn is the co-founder (alongside brother Marek Bartkuhn and Yannick Elverfeld) of revered Frankfurt label Needs Music. The Nomad EP features the absolutely sublime "Nomand (Full Experience)" a bittersweet and emotive journey through techno-soul that's reminiscent of Jazzanova via John Beltran; this track is pure ecstasy and when that Spanish guitar comes in, it's one of those 'wow' moments! The reprise of the track is pure bliss, focusing in on that guitar sound and some immersive ambient atmosphere. On the flip we've also got the uplifting deep house vibes of "Tokyo Burning" which sounds more on the Ron Trent tip; this one's great too!

Review: Moscow's Arsenii is up next on New York City edits imprint Razor N Tape. Following up the great Allegria on Basic Fingers last year, he's back with some more obscure oddities spliced to perfection once again. He takes the razor to "Son of the Sun," which the label themselves describe as "the Shaft-in-outer-space drama" (and we agree completely) to the 'proto-balearic lilt' of "Jungle Melody" by Pierre Dalmon and of course the big band funk of "Fool Like A Child"; more commonly known to some as Christian Gaubert's "Sweet And Fool Like A Child" from 1979.

Review: Glasgow imprint Dixon Avenue Basement Jams are really on a roll at the moment aren't they! After some great releases by the likes of Casio Royale and Big Miz they now present the return of Detroit producer Jared Wilson, who last appeared for the label back in 2012. The Communing With Ghosts EP features "Pheo Acid" which is a dark and epic 303 excursion that will no doubt appeal to hardcore fans of the classic Chicago sound. "Acid River" (getting the theme now?) is more restrained with the relentless squelch of that little silver box, but still pumps along at a nice pace. On the flip we've next got "Smartbar Acid" which we really can imagine sounds like a night up at the infamous Windy City institution. Finally the title track might break the pattern of names thus far but not the sound (thankfully) and it's definitely the most high octane acid track on here that would make even DJ Pierre himself stand up and notice.

  7. PTU - "Taorak" (3:43)
Review: Irrespective of whether one buys into the appeal of Nina Kraviz as a DJ, there is little doubt about her ability to A&R a label. The latest split release on Trip features Kraviz herself, label regular Bjarki and a rare Aphex Twin track. Recorded under his AFX guise, "P-String" originally surfaced back in 1995 on a Peel session. Its combination of pounding drums and chilling strings stills sounds fresh and, to Kraviz' credit, is in keeping with the tone of the release. Bjakri's "Baepolar" chops up mid-90s jungle bass with glitchy rhythms, while his "Naked Naked" is a storming techno affair, led by pounding kicks. Even Kraviz gets in on the 90s mood, with the deep, abstract groove of "Don't Mind Wrong Keys".

Review: We can think of a fair few disco diggers who will be more than a little annoyed by this re-issue. Originally released on the obscure La Shawn label back in 1980, "Take Me I'm Yours" is widely considered to be one of Patrick Adams' best productions. It's certainly something of a dusty gem, with Mary Clark's soulful, country-tinged vocals simply soaring over a reggae-tinged, string-drenched disco groove. It would have been nice to have seen original flipside "You Got Your Hold On Me" included, but it's not a major issue; given the in-demand (and hard-to-find) nature of the A-side, we should be pleased it's come back round again.

This vinyl only release contains 3 tracks, each with it's distinct flavor and time/place on the dancefloor. You may know by now the quality to expect from Roundabout Sounds...and this EP keeps the bar raised high. Review: In truth, most of 1080p's vinyl releases have extolled the virtues of a Mellow Vibe, though few have been quite as dreamy and picturesque as this debut EP from Sophie Sweetland's new DJ Zozi alias. While each of the four tracks makes its' dancefloor intentions clear, it's the typically Canadian dreaminess of the accompanying chords, melodies and textures that catches the ear. Throughout, there are plenty of nods to early British hardcore breakbeat (see the cheeky "Zozi Theme" and "Up (Slammin Vers)"), as well as early 808 State ("Mellow Vibe") and bouncy, cut-up deep house (the hugely enjoyable "Snow Globe"). As you'd expect from both producer and label, the whole thing is vibrant, colourful and decidedly loved-up
