Review: Last year, someone set up an online petition calling for Warp to re-release The Other People Place's brilliant Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe album on wax. Happily, Warp has responded to the strength of feeling from electronica fans - most of whom bristled at the high online prices for second hand copies - and re-pressed it. Drexciya man James Stinson's 2001 solo set remains a timeless electronic classic; a perfectly pitched and immaculately produced fusion of downtempo electro rhythms, spacey electronics and twinkling synthesizer melodies. In fact, you'll struggle to find a better electro album full stop, making this reissue an essential purchase for anyone not lucky enough to own an original copy.

Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Review: Folamour's brand new label is For Heaven Use Only... But don't worry - we won't tell him if you play them at any dancefloor in the real world. The Moonrise Hill hero takes the lead with a lush brushed drum tropical boogie cut that's all light in the synths and woozy in the horns while Lo Life sedates us to the very soul with the lush and loopy "Gucci Tennis 84". Wrapping up the second side we have a Carter-level boompty tub-thumper "Baciami Subito" from Kaffe Creme and an energised jazz techno jam from Marc Bianco that features the slipperiest fretless bass runs this side of Azymuth HQ.

Review: Music From Memory has a reputation for doing the unexpected. It would be fair to say that few would have predicted the Dutch label's decision to release a collection "electronic and contemporary music from Brazil". As usual, the Red Light Records affiliated crate-digging crew has done a superb job with Outro Tempo, which was compiled by label affiliate John Gomez. Musically, it's predictably varied but always beautiful. It mostly focuses on tracks that fuse traditional Brazilian instrumentation, percussion and musical ideas, with elements of electronica, ambient, jazz-fusion and Reich style minimalism. The accompanying liner notes do a great job in putting the collection in context, explaining how the music was often inspired by political changes within Brazil during the 1980s.

Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

  2. Brotherson (Strings & vocal shorter album version)
Review: Repress of the sought after Mukatsuku Records 12 containing two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Juno copies come in an exclusive branded card sleeve + stickers and a signed insert.

Review: Sounds Of The City continues to fly the flag for soul enhanced house music from unsung heroes as Javonntte joins the fray with some absolutely un-missable grooves. "Fantasy" seems to capture some of the heated romance of the Cassio Ware classic but reworks it into a fresh, bumping concoction of the highest order. "Late Night People" meanwhile heads into slinkier territory with its killer chord flourishes and tightly wound beat, and then "MRDJ" turns the heat back up with a powerful lead hook purpose-built to get hands held aloft. This is the best kind of upfront house music, oozing soul and sophistication while keeping things utterly funky at all times.

Review: Starting a solo venture alongside his work running the UntilMyHeartStops label, Leif kicks off the new 10" Tio Series with two stunning tracks that once again demonstrate his unstoppable progression in the field of broken beats. "July V" is a true head-spinner, using dazzling arpeggios and fractious drums to create a wondrous crystalline slice of leftfield rhythm science. "Shoulders Back" on the flip is a completely different concern, but no less astounding in its use of cyclical, percussive melodies to create a hypnotic, and truly distinctive workout. At a time when more and more producers are moving away from traditional 4/4 rhythms, Leif's particular style is as natural and inspiring as it gets.

Review: **REPRESS ALERT** Chicago's The Nite Owl Diner originally released "Stay" by local heroine The Black Madonna back in 2014 to much fanfare. A wonderful edit geared for some life affirming moments on late night dancefloors that was no doubt honed by the artist's (known to her Dad as Marea Stamper) skills behind the decks for several years at Windy City institution Smart Bar. On the flip there's the even funkier and discofied "Venus Requiem" full of neon-lit synths and cracking Linn drums; there's an odd familiarity throughout as it builds and builds.. and drops right at that moment to set the dancefloor alight again. It's just one of 'those' kind of tracks and here's your chance to snap up another copy of this remastered gem before it flies off the shelf again.

Having kicked off his Secret Angels label last year with an EP and an album, he's already back with yet another long player spread across two discs and dripping with that irresistible, neo-soul enriched boogie. This is house music how it should be done, channelling the influence of P-funk, Prince and D'Angelo to make some of the sweetest party-starting material you're likely to hear all year. Do you need any more convincing?

Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Review: Felix Dickinson's long running Bastedos disco edit label comes back from a couple of years out with some certified heaters to get the party cooking just right, and he's not doing it on his own. Dickinson does take the reins for the A side, which finds "I Just Wanna Boogie" roaring out of the stocks on an uptempo, borderline Hi-NRG tip. This is definitely one to push the dancers to the limit. Meanwhile Scandinavian nu-disco legend Rune Lindbaek takes on the B side with a remix of "Supermann" that takes a much smoother, low slung route through disco funk.

Review: Step up House Running, a label making its first steps with this release, welcoming some new talent into the fold and making a strong first impression in the process. Tell keeps things deep with the undulating warmth of "Floating Lands", while Meemo has a fractured soul mood hovering over "Therez". Baltra's "Paris La Nuit" is a more feisty affair with its gnarly, acid lead line but it's balanced out by a fun and funky disco flair, and then Kiani's Virunga rounds the record off with a lovely arpeggio-powered remix of Deced's "Sound Curiosity".

Review: Freshly minted imprint Triassic Tusk is the brainchild of two little-known Scottish record collectors. Screamers, Bangers & Cosmic Synths is the label's first stab at putting together a compilation, and draws together tracks that have done the business during the first year of their regular Moon Hop party. Predictably, the track list is chock full of ludicrously obscure, quirky and eccentric cuts from artists that even their own parents have forgotten about. As a result, there's plenty to enjoy, from the hustling boogie of Steve Monite's ludicrously expensive "Only You (Disco Jam)" - previously only available on an album that will now set you back over L1500 - to the spiraling, Latin-tinged funk swing of Francis Guillon's "By My Side" and Juan Pablo Torres' bizarre cosmic disco wig-out "Nocturno Op 1".

If it soundtracks any particular time of a pool party it's when everyone starts pushing each other it. Joyously buzzy. "BFODAAS" takes us back to the earlier chapter of the party where the vibe is warming up, drinks are sliding down and there's not a cloud in the sky. Having released the Human Beings album last year, Vogel invites a stellar cast to come and remix several tracks with predictably fantastic results. As usual, there's scant info about artist or release - just the way I like it - so you'll have to draw your own conclusions. YYY323 doesn't try too hard for attention, presenting two groove-based DJ tools that should appeal to those who like their techno bass-heavy, percussive and hypnotic. A-side "Tool A" peppers an undulating rhythm track with fluttering electronics and bold, mind-altering bass, before things get rougher on the flip via the thrusting drum machine hits, pulsating sub-bass and subtle acid style electronics of "Tool B".

It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. Review: The Detroit badman always delivers the goods, but he'd recently focussed on his more house-centric style thanks to a series of sleek, soulful releases. This time, he's come out all guns blazing with this new four-part killer, led by the absolutely nutty groove that is "Sink Holes" - a proper slice of Omar S acid, delivered in fine style and with his inimitable rawness. "HELL ON EARTH" is a moodier, funkier house tip with a jazzy side, while the flipside's "Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!)" is a fast, upbeat house bomb with a crazy little disco sample that floats amid the grainy bass drums. "Party Marty" is a no nonsense kind of lick, pouncing away with a steady, yet unmistakably Omar S-style percussion, and a heavy bass blow. This is one hell of a way to make an appearance this early in the year - highly recommended!!

  3. Long Night Ahead (7:15)
  4. Pajama Stomp (6:36)
Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Review: Following a recent dalliance with Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape Reserve, COEO returns to the loving arms of Toy Tonics with another solid four-track excursion. Happily, they hit the ground running with the rushing positivity of "Mydonna", a bumpin' chunk of peak-time house goodness built around some superb disco samples and a bustling groove. The accompanying, "alternate cut" smartly emphasizes some of the original instrumentation, whilst adding some subtle swing to the disco-house drums. On the flip, you'll find the deep, smooth and sensual "Torrow", and the breezy, atmospheric, piano-laden shuffle of "Coast To Coast".

Review: Larry McCarthy aka Bruce is back. Having appeared on a who's who of Bristol labels such as Dnuos Ytivil and Idle Hands, it seems it's time for Untold's mighty Hemlock for the great Before You Sleep EP. It's another fine example of how artists on this scene flirt with industrial/experimental aesthetics to interesting effect. The title track is a sublime and mysterious ambient journey that will hypnotise you into a trance state blissfully. It's more like the artist we know on the quirky and jagged groove of "In Line" awash in static, rusty analogue drum computer sounds and dubby aesthetics: prepare to be immersed by this deep underwater journey. Finally on the flip, we've got another beatless excursion with the rolling and hypnotic "Sweat" where slow arpeggios and dreamy drones face off with various analogue bleeps and squeals and it's calming as much as it is violent. Great release here.

Review: Pictu doesn't put out Unanim releases anywhere near as much as we'd like. But when he does, we all need to pay attention. After almost two years since Herodot's release Dutch deepsmith Ludwig jumps on board with two dense but sparse grooves that instantly suck you in. His sound fits the label instantly: "Mania GR" pops and jerks with a classic jacking, bubbling funk while "Wishkey In An Icejar" is drenched in total sub pressure as the drums are smothered with layers of low end frequencies and a tripped out spoken narrative. Let's hope both parties don't it leave us hanging too long.

Review: Following the well-deserved hype and love for the re-released "What's A Girl To Do?", Dutchman Bas Bron returns with three brand new FY tracks. "Araya" is condensed disco positivity, crafted in a similar way to the Norwegian lot 10 years ago: unashamedly vibrant. "Piayes Beach Bar & Grill" takes more of a G-funk swagger with big pitch bent synth licks and Roland hits while "Romantic Bureaucracy" rounds up the triplet on a more whimsical, trippy tip where off-kilter pianos gradually come more and more into focus. On point.

Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Review: As Yse Saint Laur'ant, Ant Plate (one half of ever productive duo Rhythm Plate) takes some time out from crafting refined deep house music to indulge his more wayward tendencies. Amongst the music coming to light in this intriguing diversion from a prolific artist is the fantastic "Just Because...", which comes on like early Wagon Christ material with a modern production sheen. "Space Is Defunct" meanwhile slaps down some chugging 80s flavoured grooves, "2106" reaches for the boogie and "Don't Make Me Think" channels a laid back Balearic mindset. It's a mixed bag of a record, make no mistake. That's also what makes it marvelous.

Review: When it comes to dusty-fingered disco re-edits, few dig deeper than Sweden's Albion Venables. We'd be surprised if all bar a few hardy collectors recognizes any of the source material behind this latest collection of scalpel rearrangements. "African King" is a chunk of percussive, low-slung, Afro-influenced disco-rock sleaze, while "Riviera Walk" is a particularly Balearic chunk of loved-up proto house. Flip for the slap bass propelled, boogie-era disco breeziness of "Fire Dance", and the synthesizer-heavy, Euro-eccentricity of "Midnite Magic". This latter cut is arguably the EP's standout moment - it gets just the right balance between camp Italo-disco and intergalactic cosmic disco - though all four edits are superb.

Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is one of the better-known Italo-disco anthems, which makes it all the more surprising that Dark Entries has chosen to reissue it. This is not a criticism, though; they've given Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani's original the remaster treatment, and it sounds even more alien, exciting and oddball as it did back in 1983. The original vocal version - all woozy synths, throbbing arpeggios, wonky beats and typically eccentric vocals - is backed by the Instrumental version, which is the preferred mix of choice for many Italo DJs. If it's not in your collection already, it should be.

Review: Death Waltz has pulled of something of a coup here, obtaining permission to release Angelo Badalamenti's score from David Lynch's controversial Twin Peaks movie spin-off, Fire Walk With Me. The film was panned by both critics and fans of the original TV series on its 1992 release, but has since becoming something of a cult classic. Badalamenti's fine score is as atmospheric and beguiling as his work on the original Twin Peaks series, and contains a number of tracks that rework musical themes from that acclaimed production. Death Waltz has gone all out on the production, too, housing heavyweight, cherry-splattered vinyl in a luscious gatefold sleeve.

Review: Under the now familiar Spacetravel alias, Luca Cara has released some fine music over the last couple of years, most notably a fine debut album for Perlon. Here he pops up on Japan's Cabaret imprint with a four-track EP that largely looks to Detroit for inspiration. The sci-fi inspired futurism of the Motor City can be clearly heard in the darting synth lines, fizzing cymbal programming and undulating bass of opener "Axion", before "Change Planet Stacion" adds a little acid-fuelled Chicago jack to the late '80s Transmat template. "Spirit" is darker and creepier in tone, while "Ankor What" successfully fixes vintage techno percussion and synths to a rich, deep house style bassline and chords.

Review: Late last year, previously unheard outfit Bongo Entp released a digital-only debut album via Kenneth Bager's Balearic-minded Music For Dreams EP. Here, they make their first appearance on wax via a set that showcases both tracks from that samba-soaked set, and a string of new remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the heady, Azymuth-influenced samba-goes-jazz-funk shuffle of opener "Foto Felita Do Avaio" and synth heavy, dub-flecked warmth of "El Rey Do Pollo", to the near ambient, slo-mo dreaminess of "Lujon". Carrot Green turns that latter track into a mid tempo Balearic house shuffler, while Selvagem contributes a jaunty, dub-house interpretation of "Foto Filita Do Avaio" that's arguably the EP's finest moment.

Review: Roving Romanians Khidja take us on a trip of a lifetime with "Impossible Holiday"... We take off with the stately, cavernous and slightly fuzzy "Die Wilde Spirale" and land in our improbable destination to the spiked out synth washes and dubby bass palpitations of "Pinnacles". We enjoy all sorts of unperceivable activities to the bouncy, analogue bed and fluttering, head-soothing arpeggios of "Haetrin" then fly home to our comparably dismal existences on the droning, groaning and ever-morphing "Kraftfield". Happy travels.

Powerful in the lyrical, technical and party dynamics this is a huge dancefloor record... This reissue is long overdue. You know what to do.
