  1. Mysteries Of The East
  2. Mysteries Of The East ('88 Mecca mix)
Review: A planned reissue for many years, the untimely passing of Steve Coe shortly after the label's rerelease of The Ganges Orchestra's The Dream put everything on hold. However, time moves and so now seems a fitting time to revisit this "world dance" classic with fonder hearts. Long cherished, it is a reminder of Steve's enduring studio mastery. After the initial success of his work with Sheila Chandra in Monsoon, Steve expanded his musical scope, working on an Indipop compilation as clubs looked to Eastern flavours to add a new dimension for the dancefloor.

Teaming up with tabla disciple turned teacher, Jhalib (Millar), as well as long time collaborator Martin Smith, it's hard to imagine Mysteries was first heard in 1982. Hailed as an all time classic, it's enduring appeal can be seen in how it became a staple for the likes of Danielle Baldelli at the infamous Cosmic club and beyond to become an original Evissa "balearic" secret play for Weatherall & co in those fateful summers of love and beyond.

Remastered especially for this release, the orchestral Eastern melody and mid-tempo chugging rhythms and vocals marry in perfection with a dub bassline of Wobble inspired depth. This alone would be enough, however, the original is at last backed with the 1988 remix. Aimed at the then burgening New Beat scene, a subtle straightening kick is added, but it's the unmistakable vocals of Sheila Chandra that finally brings this release together in melodic harmony. Peace be with you Steve. I AM x

  1. Birds (8:21)
  2. Tubular Bells (Oldfield) (7:46)
Review: There's been much online chatter about Levon Vincent's latest 12". Sadly, it's not been about A-side "Birds" - a thrillingly ragged, aggressive and powerful acid thumper that's up there with the producer's most potent work - but rather what's lurking on the flip. As the title suggests, "Tubular Bells" is a cover of Mike Oldfield's most famous work, whose twinkling melody remains one of the most famous and well known in popular music. Vincent retains that melody line, looping it up and tweaking it out over a typically rubbery and fuzzy 4/4 house groove. Some will love it, others won't; either way, A-side "Birds" is superb, making Vincent's latest Novel Sound 12" an essential purchase.

Review: Jago's 1983 debut single, "I'm Going To Go", is largely regarded as something of an Italo-disco classic. Much of the track's infamy comes not from its' cheery original version or superb instrumental - which makes copious use of reverb and tape delay - but rather from Frankie Knuckles' Plant Mix. The house great's killer proto-house remix was a favourite with dancers at The Warehouse in Chicago, and has been bootlegged numerous times in recent years. Here, it gets an official repress on Dark Entries, alongside Jago's original vocal and instrumental mixes. All three versions are killer, making this 12" an essential addition to any record collection.

This is his latest EP, Alderaan, named after an extinct planet in Star Wars. Review: Following the hazy brilliance of last year's outing on UNTHANK, Canadian deep house explorer Lnrdcroy makes his debut on local label Mood Hut. Intriguingly, title track "Ooze City" eschews the wavy, new age vibes and ultra-deep melodies he's previously been associated with, turning instead to the world of wonky, late night acid house (think undulating TB-303 lines, hypnotic grooves, distorted electronics and hissing cymbals). Those seeking more pastoral pleasures will love the heady ambient house electronics and spaced out bongo lines of "Aquabus (Plaza Of Nations Dub)", while the delightful "Kali Yuga" recalls the dreamy brilliance of his 2014 classic "Sunrise Market", whilst moving further towards the tribal intensity of traditional African drum recordings.

  4. 1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

Ideal for filling any holes in your collection, the likes of Uptown Funk Empire's Pharoah Saunders cover "Freedom", Manmademusic's gospel-level "Circles", Eddie C's tweaking, freaking drum funk "What It Is", Stacy and Peven's stuttering funk "Body Jerkin" still slap and tickle just as stylishly and smoothly as they did when Marcel first prised them from the editor's clutches... And still will in 10, 20 or 50 years-time. Proper dancefloor clobber.

Review: Lavish gospel disco action from AOTN: longstanding gospel writer Calvin Bridges gets the 45 salute he deserves with two powerful 1978 flashbacks. Reminded by Floating Points just how relevant and timeless "The Power Of Your Love" sounds, AOTN bossman Fryer has licenced its vibrant, floor-shaking sermon with complete blessing from Bridges himself. "He's Alright", already a staple for Fryer for years, enjoys the coveted b-side status; with its big piano roll intro and gutsy gospel vocal, if there's a bad vibe in sight after dropping this then you're in the wrong job. Review: Patrick Keel started his career as a drummer with various unsuccessful bands, before buying a synthesizer in 1980 and forming "one-man-band" The Pool. While he released numerous albums and singles over a five-year period, it's 1983 single "Dance It Down" that has stood the test of time. This Dark Entries reissue features the punchy, electro-influenced new-wave original and spacey Dub from the U.S 12", plus the lesser-known European Mix (closer in style to Italo-disco, though actually made by a Belgian). Arguably even better is flipside "Jamaica Running", where glistening melodies cluster themselves around a proto-dancehall rhythm, and its' stoned, pitched-down alternative mix, "Jamaica Resting".

Review: 1982's "Life Without You..." by the Expansives is a longtime italo disco classic, the sort of tune that makes you pass out upon finding it in its original format in one dusty record store bin. However, it's alright, that's not likely to happen because this is as rare as hen's teeth and that is also why the lovely Dark Entries crew have reissued it for us. The original is magical and explorative, a photo house tune with visionary robotic vocals and FX tricks that make you wonder just what sort of stuff Franco Rago, Gigi Farina and X.Monneret were toking up in Italy back in the 80's. That instrumental, too...so highly recommended.

Review: Melbourne-based DJ and producer Prequel returns to the Rhythm Section fold for a second release after getting his debut with the much-loved Polite Strangers 12" back in late 2014. After a few appearances here and there in the interim period, this Freedom Jazz Dance 12" suggests Prequel has really expanded his production parameters with four tracks that add spoken word samples and subtle vocal lines to his stellar instrumental flourishes. Local Melbourne beat poet Cazeaux O.S.L.O. brings his distinct vocal tones and inspirations to lead track "Saints", a fine blunted opener that nods to KDJ classic "Amerika". You can see this one being played for months to come! Following this, Prequel throws down some effervescent jazz house on "Nothing Better" and "Walken" with a deviation into more beatdown territory, "You Shall Know The Truth", wedged inbetween.

Review: Brazilian scalpel fiend Selvagem has been on fine form in recent times, delivering essential EPs for Disco Halal, B.I.S (Beats In Space's lesser-known re-edit offshoot), and Barefoot Beats. Given this impressive track record, it's little surprise to see him starring on Dicky Trisco's long-running Disco Deviance label. "Chitty Disco" is a grunting, throbbing, horn-heavy delight, with Selvagem successfully beefing up the bottom-end whilst retaining the original's natural swing. Flipside "Pontonic Por Favor" is an altogether more South American flavoured treat, with lazy tumpet lines tumbling down over carnival-ready disco beats and a slick, synth-heavy groove. There are occasional chanted vocals, too, which should have the more enthusiastic dancers singing along on the dancefloor.

Review: The fifth release on the ever-improving Church label comes from Chaos In The CBD, a duo who switched from sweatier, bumpin' flavours to deeper, jazzier pastures via a fine recent EP on Rhythm Section International. The three tracks here are similarly blazed and musically expansive, beginning with the stargazing chords, intergalactic melodies and zippy rhythms of "Constraints of Time Travel". It's a little different to what we've come to expect, but no less thrilling. The duo cover more familiar ground with the Theo Parrish influenced bossa-house loveliness of "Phantom Melodies", and the deep, Rhodes-laden broken-house haziness of "Similar Stories".

Review: Serious reissue business: Be With take us back to 1971 for Air's one and only album. The brainchild of Googe Coppola (who you may recognise from Fire Island or cameos with Jeremy Steig) and her partner in jazz Tom Coppola, you can hear vapour trails of the pastoral, laidback folk of the late '60s with a more forthright funk energy and jazz mindset as the lovers and their bandmates dazzle us with meandering melodies and stories; from The Doors level organ frenzy of "Baby I Don't Know Where I Love" to the galloping momentum of "In Our Time" that suddenly stops dead into an almost medieval breakdown by way of ballads such as "Sister Bessie" and Afrobeat-style horn chaos like "Lipstick", this really captures an exciting time in music and, if the music is as honest as it seems, a rather exciting time in the lives of the Coppolas too...

“We are very happy to return on One Records, it’s really like a family. Adam

why it’s always special to release on One.” - Yamen & EDA

part of a One Records showcase.
Over the past few years the pair have been hard at work in the studio refining

release last year on Early Dub and this latest offering on One demonstrates
this clearly, which has gained them support from the likes of Appolonia and
Raresh amongst many.

On the A-side, they take their rusty scalpel to Pilou's "Ca Va", a tongue-in-cheek Belgian disco treat that originally landed in 1982. Their version makes much of the original's rubbery, low-slung bassline, hustlin' funk riffs and camp, tongue-in-cheek vocals. On the flip, they turn their attention to Isabelle Mayereau's 1980 new wave cut "On A Trouve", stretching it out for maximum cosmic disco pleasure. It's a fine rework, of course, but lacks the sheer party-starting thrills of the quirky A-side.

Review: The latest sneaky 7" from Eddie C's Red Motorbike imprint is a split affair, with the Canadian producer being joined by sometime Conga Radio man Robert S (this time under the previously unused Roberto alias). The latter delivers "Safari", an unfeasibly tactile fusion of sensual, slo-mo beats, looped new age synthesizer refrains and sleazy, late night saxophone. In contrast, Eddie C's "Slippin Away" mines the world of disco-rock for inspiration, re-editing a chunky, break-driven, organ-laden groover and turning it into a real dancefloor treat. As he often does, the Canadian has added a touch of dub delay and a few filter sweeps to keep things cosmic.

He's here courtesy of Shall Not Fade, a young and vibrant independent with a lot confidence and flair about the way they release music, and if you're looking for some sketchy, utterly analog house music then you've come to the right spot. "Saturday Morning (Headache Mix)" is a warm, placid house gem with driving piano keys at its core; "Stash" is deeper, moodier and unleashes rolling bassline over its percussion; "Tragic Ending" is the off-kilter nugget for those wanting something a little looser; and "That Old Feeling" is a mesmerising house abstraction with an aqueous breeze floating through its mix. A quality bunch of outsider house tools.

On the A side, Zarate serves up "Sands Of Time," a smooth low-slung groove carried by exotic vocals reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard; a nice touch. On the flip, Sotofett takes it down to grinding and slow-burning pace with the lysergic EBM styles of "Coiled (Acid mix)" which is one gutsy groove indeed; with a seriously nasty arpeggio covered in the right amount of rust and dust as we like!

  3. The Joneses - "Sugar Pie Guy" (Tee Scott club dub) (6:13)
Review: The Edit & Dub Recordings label out of Tokyo is seriously impressing us as of late, with this new remix EP being the best of their material to date. That's because they have the house master, Chicago dance wizard, Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers remixing Original Love's "Love Vista" into a gorgeous house track with a sublime dub sensibility that suits it down to the bone - this is tune of the week for us and we cannot recommend it enough. However, the dub version of "Ouch" by the Shantell Sisters & Keva Band, which is actually more of a disco banger, is no less masterful in its execution and italo-leaning tendencies. Finally, Tee Scott delivers a dub of "Sugar Pie Guy" by The Joneses, a percussion-heavy boogie monster with a buzzing bassline ready to conquer the floor good and proper.

Review: Rudy (aka Robin Lee from Faze Action) makes a welcome return on FAR, taking in the atmosphere of sunnier climes.

The title tracks opening cascades and swirling synths fall into an easy Balearic groove, with singing melodies, exotic marimbas, a chugging synth bass and production echoing a mix of Compass Point, Grace Jones et all on holiday in Europe, whilst setting the scene for the EP. The 2nd track is introduced by hypnotic tones against analog synth arpeggios and haunting synth solos, invoking the "Sky Goddess". Back down to earth on the flip side is an invitation to sail down the "Shimmering Coast", with its relaxed guitar groove and keyboard flourishes all underpinned by a stunning 80s sounding bass line. Dropping anchor at "Fortune Lagoon", we are treated to some of Rudy's personally designed analog keyboard sounds, which mange to challenge yet retain tropical warmth.

Finally live chorus bass introduces us to "Body Wave" which manages to fuse easy French Disco with jazzy Fender Rhodes hooks. By Nature is a reflection of white washed houses, palm trees, refreshing coastal beaches and yacht parties. Don't forget your sunglasses and tanning oil!

  2. Lovelee Dae (Bicep dub) (7:05)
Review: Given their well discussed love of vintage U.S house and garage, it's little surprise to see Bicep taking on the potentially tricky task of remixing Blaze's 1996 New Jersey classic, "Lovelee Dae". Wisely, the Belfast boys have retained many of the original's sumptuous elements -sweeping strings, rich chords and summery vocal included - and expertly fused them with carnival-friendly drums and a deliciously tactile, Italian house style bassline. The fine vocal mix is accompanied by a similarly impressive Dub, where the duo makes merry with floating, delay-heavy vocal snippets, filters, and their own dense, party-rocking rhythm.

Review: Leipzig's finest M Ono and Luveless are back on Houston via Detroit's Kolour with volume three of their new limited 10" series. Starting out with the deeply uplifting soulfulness of "Never Gonna Leave You 2K16" they are then into "Losing Memory" on the flip which gets more reduced, dubby and emotive, giving a nod to the kind of loopy deepness as heard on labels like Office or Slices Of Life. There really is something in the water out in Leipzig at the moment, great stuff!

Review: Tony Donson unveiled his DJ Sonikku project earlier this year, delivering an impeccable EP of humid deep house for Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii. All My Friends sees him transfer to the crustacean-themed parent label, in the process adding a little more analogue crunch to his previously dreamy productions. There's much to admire, from the Bobby 'O' inspired high-energy cheeriness of opener "Chemical Plant", to the proto-house melodiousness of "Sand Oasis". Best of all, though, is "Track 3", a wonky, back-to-basics bumper that takes a left-of-centre approach to classic New Jersey garage.

He first came to our attention with the Transcendental Numbers ep on Jamal Moss' Mathematics label in 2012 and we've waited on each release ever since, including last year's huge Future Shock Disco ep (a collaboration with Jamal himself). Here DeViere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for UMHS to hit double figures.

Review: Junes delivers another trio of distinctive, whacked-out shufflers to Galdoors. First up it's Trails, stomping through glimmering, trippy textures with an emphatic groove. Shift State brings dubby delays and heavyweight bells that bounce back and forth over another potent rhythm to heady effect. Precipice makes use of a more menacing combo: clipped congas and swinging highs gang up with a bullish sub bass, before the icy pads grab hold - not for kids.

Review: Not just content with hammering out minimal/tech house bangers on his eponymous imprint, East End Dubz upped his game on new sub legal Eastenderz, bringing some killer heat courtesy of Romanians lime Priku and Lizz. Next up is Nami who inaugurated the label back in 2014. "The Secret Of Nim" is a deeply hypnotic groove that you could imagine a crowd full sun-drunk youths on the beach at Sunwaves totally losing their heads to; this one is as bumpin' and funky as we like it! "Tahiti Exploration" is more on the traditional deep house tip but still quite enjoyable; Finally "Terza Rima" gets tough and rolling on you; this is what you wanted all along. This trance inducing groove will really rock the dancefloor.

Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick and more...

Review: The Optimo Music Disco Plates series returns with a reissue of a vaunted Y Records classic by Disconnection. Optimo man Keith McIvor is a self-professed Y Records freak so he must be thrilled the label granted him permission to fully license a 12" edition of Disconnection's mutant disco cover version of a song from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical, South Pacific. This Optimo Music Disco Plate edition is an exact replica of the original Y Records 12" from 1982 - aside from the fact it arrives in a shrink-wrapped black disco bag with a 12" x 12" insert featuring the original front sleeve artwork. Look out for the extra freaky UK Discomix version that sits on the flip alongside the "faux exotica delight" of "Aaaah".

Review: Finally, the tenth instalment of the tight-as-hell Secret Squirrel label, another two-pronged nu-disco attack to satisfy each and every one of your DJ needs. Sticking to their strictly anonymous look-and-feel, the ambiguously named "Track 1" wraps a fuzzy twist of guitar riffs around a heads-down groove that emanates sexy strings from all angles; "Track 2" on the B-side meanders towards a more synth-pop kinda sound, where a busy beat flex gives charge to an ultra-sleek and carefree 80's sound. Oh, lord, those riffs!

Review: Junktion is Hans Peeman from Nijmegen, Netherlands, co-founder/A&R at Outplay. The deeper side of house and everything that goes with it is his thing and The Wide Awake EP is good evidence of this. There's a real Thomas Bangalter style vibe to this EP, as evidenced on the low-slung disco loop goodness of the title track and "What We Are" following in suit, with more wicked sample cut ups rocking the night away on this funky groove. On the flip we've got "Don't Mess Up" which is perfect for those Summer open-air parties with its dusty arrangement and hands in the air vibe; the real highlight on here.

Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is one of the better-known Italo-disco anthems, which makes it all the more surprising that Dark Entries has chosen to reissue it. This is not a criticism, though; they've given Maurice Cavalieri and Giorgio Stefani's original the remaster treatment, and it sounds even more alien, exciting and oddball as it did back in 1983. The original vocal version - all woozy synths, throbbing arpeggios, wonky beats and typically eccentric vocals - is backed by the Instrumental version, which is the preferred mix of choice for many Italo DJs. If it's not in your collection already, it should be.
