Review: Over the last decade, Bournemouth-based Chris Moss has become one of the more reliable sources of hardware-driven acid house revivalism. Here he turns up on Polyibus Trax with a trio of razor-sharp, analogue-heavy techno workouts. There's a refreshingly no-nonsense feel about the industrial strength riffs, woozy chords and slamming drum beats of "Black Philip", while "The Waiting Room" is the kind of nasty, muscular acid house shuffler that will get dancers sweating at 5am. Arguably best of all, though, is bizarrely titled flipside "48858275 2294438", which builds up slowly via psychedelic acid lines and positive chord progressions, before morphing into a Brown Album-era Orbital style British techno workout.

Review: Marketed as a "funky laboratory trying to deliver the positive vibes", Germany's Born To Shine imprint is now a reliable and incredibly accessible source for the best in contemporary funk, soul and that buzzword we sometimes refer to as 'jazz-dance'. This new compilation, Funk'n'Shine, is the imprint's testament to the enlarged genre of funk, and all of its associated sub genres and parallel influences. Six cuts means six fine, house-relied excursions that meander into jazz, breakbeat and beyond; our picks have to be L33's cosmic boogie stepper "I Care 4 You", Paul Whitey's insanely funky house melter ""Zodiac", Kali Boog's downtempo electro swings on "Dreams Of You", and Nightmoves' excellent house trip "Not Tonight". What a tidy lil' TIP this is!

Review: For the first release on their Ghetto Disco imprint, Edinburgh-based daughter-and-father duo Natasha and Dennis Probert has turned to the cheekily named Serge Gamesbourg. Having already impressed via contributions to Rahaan's Street Edits series, monsieur Gamesbourg is sure to enhance his reputation further with these two reworks. "The Cool, The Hip & The Square" sees him reworking the track that initially inspired the label, extending, chopping and rearranging the killer disco original in all the right places. Arguably even better, though, is the B-side sensuality of "Bring Them Back Together", a glassy-eyed rework of a Philly soul gem that's as sultry as the come.

Review: Nearing its tenth anniversary, and making us feel like 2008 was just yesterday, it's easy to forget just how much the Mannequin label has contributed over the last ten or so years. This album by Survival, from 2012, was a prime example of the imprint spreading its cold waves good and proper, and it's no wonder that the Holodeck label has decided to reissue it in all its glory. What's more, the record isn't just an essential must have for any fan of dark, brooding stoner rock, it's also a glorious specimen of modern post punk music; too often we've faced with expensive reissues from the 80s, but at least here we have the comfort of knowing that good music is still very much alive. The self-titled LP travels from electronica through to ambient and glitchy lo-fi with utter ease, but we're even more fascinated by its deconstructed sonics and rough, grainy shards of noises. Tunes like "Floating Cube" will no doubt please the bass heads looking for some rarity and glam in their sets, while "Hourglass" offers some wavy techno vibes, and others like "Shunting Yard" are brewed of the finest cocktail of industrial noise and climatic melodies. Heavily tipped!

Review: Our first release on is/was comes courtesy of Detroit's own Dwayne Jensen. For those in the know, Dwayne requires no introduction. Behind the decks since the 80's, Dwayne has carved himself a spot in the history books of Detroit house and techno. He's equally accomplished in the studio with releases on KMS, Dockside, Landed and his own Fathom Records imprint. This 4 tracker sees Dwayne in top form with 3 straight ahead, swung and stabby house tracks and 1 slow burner for the after hours.

Review: Alin Crihan isn't one of the better-known producers on Bucharest's thriving minimal house scene, but he is certainly one of the most talented. The Grosso Mondo EP is his first release for two years, and follows on from two superb - if arguably underappreciated - 12" singles. The A-side title track sets the tone, wrapping semi-discordant orchestral notes, manipulated electronics and phased dub effects around a rich bassline and swinging tech-house groove. Flipside "Circa" is an altogether warmer and dreamier affair. While Crihan utilizes similarly trippy effects and intricate percussion programming, the bassline and melodic flourishes draw far greater influence from dub house and dub techno.

Review: The Air Texture series of ambient compilations is amongst the best around. This fifth edition features a disc's worth of selections from San Francisco-based Brit Spacetime Continuum (AKA long-serving producer Jonah Sharp) and Amsterdam-based eccentrics Juju & Jordash. Sharp's selection is reflective of his love of deep and spacey fare, some of it influenced by the Motor City (check the cuts by Fred P and Patrice Scott), but also includes vintage material from I:Cube, Sunshine Jones and old pal Move D. Juju & Jordash serve up a slightly more wide-ranging and occasionally grandiose selection, drawing together sublime contributions from the likes of Gigi Masin, Max D, Planet Love and Magic Mountain High, their acclaimed collaboration with Move D.

Review: Ukrainian producers Outstrip return on their eponymous imprint with the Booben EP. Anton Sever and Denis Borisov provide some surefire tech house grooves in th form of the title track an stripped and dubby DJ tool that relies on bare bone elements for its functional sense of groove therapy while "PravaK" on the flip channels that very Ukrainian tech house sound that rolls deep and full of swing like homeboys and current scene favorites iO Mulen and Silat Beksi. There's some wicked remixes on here too: the Fuse London affiliated Seb Zito gives "Salat" a truly deep makeover using some tight rhythtms and some really emotive chords to full effect over some druggy vocal treatments which will work a treat at the afterhours session.

Review: Making his debut appearance with the Magic Circles Music label, Smashed Atoms lays down the law with a bubbly, warm and disco-inflected vision of contemporary house music for the groovier end of a warm up session. "Holding On" bursts with positivity as chirpy organ stabs and plush pads swirl around the slow but strong rhythm section. "The People Come Together" meanwhile gets a late 80s boogie kink in its swagger, ramping up the bass and throwing in some powerful chord progressions to get the soul stirring. "Wonderlust" finishes the EP off with a breezy, summer-ready jam for feel-good times in the sun or under the stars.

There are delicate ambient tones with vocals from Soul Plateau, crafty breakstep constructions from Shocko, off-kilter beats from Hylo and much more besides. What binds the release together is a strong sense of melody and emotion, bringing all manner of tempos and rhythms together in one strong statement of what the Derry underground is all about.

Review: Legendary techno and electro duo Frak jump up on Madrid's newest label, the enigmatically named Femur. This is great news for us - and you - because we still believe that these two make just about the best, and rawest, dance music available over the shop counter, and we're endlessly fascinated by their altruistic take on the perennially pleasing 4/4 formula. In fact, it would be fair to say that "Span Clarity" spreads much further than the inevitable four-to-the-floor, and we're faced with a classic slice of rolling Frak-funk, driven by harsh snare drums and wonky analogue melodies. The B-side kicks off the moodier, more menacing hooks and bass stabs of the Detroitian "Cromos Faction", a killer of a tune that melts effortlessly into the bleeps and gargles of the utterly nutty groove named "Imagined Rash". Rough, effective and bound to destroy the floor...

Review: We can think of few more fitting producers to put their spin on Telephones' colourful, head-in-the-clouds "Vibe" than Call Super and DJ Sotofett. On this 12", both take on remixing "DTMF", one of the standout tracks from the Berlin-based Norwegian's superb Vibe Telemetry set. Call Super steps up first, wrapping the original's bleeping melody lines and swirling electronics around a sub-heavy bassline and shuffling, UK garage influenced mid-tempo groove. On the flip, Sotofett offers up an epic "party jungel" [sic] version that surrounds Telephones' ear-pleasing melodies with roughneck, jungle style breakbeats and a booming bassline. It sounds like something you'd hear on an old school mixtape, which is no bad thing on our eyes.

Review: Since his last full-length outing in 2014, Actress has been keeping a low profile, seemingly content to focus on running his WerkDiscs imprint. AZD, his sixth album, is a welcome return to the limelight. While it doesn't pull his trademark style in many new directions, it does contain rather a lot of impressive material. As usual, we're offered a blend of electronic intensity, rhythmic dexterity and occasional moments of blinding beauty. Other reviews have commented that it feels less introspective than his claustrophobic 2014 set Ghettoville, despite being named after his studio. We tend to agree, and it's this blend of introspection and bare-knuckle intensity that makes the album so appealing.

Review: Last year, Patchworks man Bruno Havart indulged his long-held love of Afro-disco via a fine album under the Violaa alias. Here, Africaine 808 and Dimitri From Paris take it in turn to remix tracks from that set. The latter serves up two epic interpretations of album title track "On Te L'avait Dit". There's a full Disco Blend, in which he carefully teases out the track by layering up the original production before unleashing the catchy vocal, and a pleasingly percussive, groove-driven Dub. Interestingly, Africaine 808's mix of previous single "Spies Are Watching Me" sticks fairly close to the original, craftily emphasizing Havart's percussion, punchy horns and rich, Afro-disco bass.

Review: In his usual no-nonsense fashion, Theo Parrish has not said much about the surprise release of Gentrified Love Part 2, despite it being his first fresh material since 2014. The EP features contributions from two of the Detroit's legends oldest friends: Rotating Assembly member Duminie DePorres, and original Slum Village member Waajeed. A-side "Warrior Code" is a quietly foreboding proposition, with spiraling electronics, jammed keys and cosmic chords riding a chunky, West London style broken beat groove. Flip for the altogether brighter and breezier "Leave The Funk To Us", a jaunty and jazz-wise 4/4 excursion blessed with some superb, Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk keys.

Review: Parallel Dimensions was first released in 2000. Since then, this seminal LP has been reissued on numerous occasions, and it's easy to understand why. Much like the work of his Detroit compatriot, Moodymann, Parrish's early work helped to define the sound that we now refer to as 'Detroit house'. Through an intricate, soulful blend of the Motor City's infamous Motown funk sounds, Parallel Dimensions has been one of the albums to showcase a particular style of sampling, one which focusses on rhythmic concoctions and a palpable sense of the city's struggles. Don't get us wrong, this LP is very much playable on the dancefloor, but it can't possibly be reduced to being categorised as a 'dance' piece. Hip-hop, soul, funk and disco are important parts of the formula, and the house and techno nuances that do emanate from the tunes are strictly a filter for Parrish's more jazzy, musical tendencies. It's an album to get lost in, to enjoy in different scenarios, and one in which you'll find something new every time you approach it. Unmissable.

Review: Surely not even the most ardent Bowie fan saw any of this coming. Yet to offset the justified grief and mourning at the most otherworldly and mercurial of all musical icons departing our realm, he's left us with one of his greatest albums to date and certainly his best in a full quarter century - one that returns him spiritually to the dizzying collision of bracing experimentation and melodious drama that typified the so-called Berlin trilogy of the '70s yet transplants that ambience to a new more complicated age. Jazzy inflections, electronic filigree and stark soundscapes collide elegantly amidst that stentorian voice, and whether or not Bowie put this together as a farewell, he couldn't have done it better if he'd tried. We'll truly never see his like again, alas.

Review: Emotional Rescue pulls deep from the esoteric well with the first of several avant albums over the coming year. The self-styled 'Ethno-Industrial' Vox Populi! present their 1989 Aither album, remastered and repackaged with love nearly 30 years later. Initiated by artist Axel Kyrou in 1982, Vox Populi! was soon joined by long term collaborator Pacific 231 on a series of coldwave/industrial cassette only recordings. Things changed considerably, however, with the meeting of the siblings, Mitra and Arach in 1984.The consequential use of 'traditional' instruments and, especially, his wife Mitra's Persian folklore vocals gave a specific tonality, incorporating the band's expanding passion for oriental sounds, electronics and psychedelic music. Involving numerous musicians and friends in often-spontaneous studio sessions, the melting pot of varied cultural backgrounds added ethnic, electronic, concrete music, funk, dub and experimental flavours. This feeling of the subjective absence of the artist was achieved via a communal way for making music, but still with an aim to entertain while leading the listener to experience something unique - mind elevating, non-egotistical, ethereal music - all pushing the intellect towards a more artistic transparency. Welcome to Aither.

Review: "Give Me Your Love" was produced by Roy Ayers and James "Jaymz" Bedford in 1981, this digger's delight was the one and only single by American singer Sylvia Striplin. It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Notorious B.I.G. production) on their song "Get Money" in 1995 and also by Armand Van Helden on "Full Moon" in 2000. On the flip is the sexy and lo-slung "You Can't Turn Me Away" featuring some sexy funk guitar licks and bass beneath Striplin's powerfully seductive vocals.
