Single voice patchable synthesizer
Notes: The 0-COAST is a single voice patchable synthesizer. Its name reflects the fact that it utilizes techniques from both the Moog and Buchla paradigms (aka "East Coast," and "West Coast," due to their locations), but is loyal to neither and thus implements "no coast synthesis."

While the 0-COAST utilizes classic modular synthesis techniques, it's designed to operate with or without the use of patch cables. The necessary connections have been made from circuit to circuit so it operates as an expressive, musical MonoSynth. Using only the MIDI controller of your choice you could apply new timbres to your existing musical forms!

Using the included Patch Cables you could get more scientific, experimenting with new ways to wire up the circuits. You might even forgo MIDI altogether, disappearing into a cloud of analog FM induced Sidebands and harmonics scattered around a single fundamental drone that has nothing to do with any form of music you've ever known.

Review: This latest reissue from Awesome Tapes From Africa is the whole reason for founder Brian Shimkovitz starting the blog and the label that grew out of it. Some 13 years ago, Shimkovitz stumbled across a cassette copy of Obaa Sima whilst travelling Ghana and his love for Ata Kak's music lead to the foundation of the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog and the commencement of a long running effort to track down the Ghanaian musician. Some four years after ATFA became a label, Shimkovitz finally tracked down the musician, real name Yaw Atta-Owusu, and was granted permission to reissue Obaa Sima, using the second hand tape purchased in Ghana as the source. The seven tracks on this LP are a winning tinny combination of highlife, rap, pop, and more with "Daa Nyinaa" sounding like a cover version of William De Vaughn's "Be Thankful For What You've Got".

Review: Ant Plate's Vinyl Only ventures continue unabated, taking a break from the Yse Saint Laur'ant releases and turning to Minus The Majors instead. Whether it's just Plate in another one of his guises or not is unclear, but the music certainly fits in with the more exploratory, downtempo nature of previous Vinyl Only releases. "He Looked" is an especially funky number that revolves around crafty beats and warm Moog-esque synth ripples. Things get more broken on "Jizz Jazz", and then "Drongo" manages to go even further out to sea in its quest for the perfect balance between funk and freakiness.

Review: On this groovy and entertaining 12", Stassy welcomes sometime Elephant Moon producer Lee Burton to Taverna Tracks for the first time. Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.

  2. Edwin Starr - "Easin' In" (3:12)
Review: The label says it all... Neither of these tracks have ever been released outside the original albums they came on. Until now. The legendary Candido steps up for the A-side with an uptempo, percussion-heavy groove from his 1971 album Beautiful; with big brassy fills and a stripped back, sample-addict's dream breakdown, this still punches as hard now as it did over 40 years ago. Flip for a funk trip from the equally revered Edwin Starr. Taken from his Hell Up In Harlem soundtrack, it's quintessential Blaxploitation funk with slippery bass, sleazy guitars and Edwin's velvet vocals that can go from purring to roaring in 0.03 seconds. Limited to one per customer, jump on this as soon as you can.

Review: Having enjoyed a little time off from releasing music, David Kennedy returns with a two-tracker on his Pearson Sound imprint. While flipside "Tsunan Sun" is naturally impressive, it's A-side "XLB" that everyone's been talking about. It's not hard to see why. After opening with sustained moody notes and gently pulsing electronics, the track builds into an intoxicating techno thumper, complete with alternately rising and falling synth lines, thunderous sub-bass, and a killer combination of stomping kick-drums, snappy snares, and seemingly relentless drum machine handclaps. Even by his standards, it's something of a colossal beast... and that's saying something.

  3. Electro Technology (4:17)
  4. Rector (4:27)
Review: Dutch electro enigma Cliff Lothar has picked an interesting selection of labels to reside in ever since his debut on Viewlexx back in 2013. Instead of going for the big shot imprints, which no doubt have come calling, the producer has decided to be associated to lesser known but perhaps better respected stables like Riverette, Turbo or Midlight Records. After the launch of his own Clifftraxx, he's been called up by Jared Wilson's sublime 7777 label, and what better way to open an EP than with the ferocious hooks of "Bass Destruction"? The tune is a solid electro killer, charged-up by a murky, deafening bassline, which make way for Jared Wilson and Todd's more straight-laced techno reinterpretation. "Electro Technology" heads into some classic Detroit territories thanks to that inimitable Drexciyan swing, an art form based around the elements of water and fluidity, which leaves "Rector" to launch an all-out arial attack on us with its nasty, hazardous folds of acid-ridden distortion. Gnarly.

Review: Made up of tech house trippers par excellence Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo, Doublet have been steadily issuing forth their wares with aplomb since starting out back in 2013. Most of this material has been on their own label, and so it is on this fifth installment that finds them in especially fine form with the shimmering delights of A side track "Beautyfull". "Mush" is no slouch in the attractive stakes either with its sultry chords and slinky grooves, while "Robin & Maikel" takes a more esoteric route through tech house on the B side. It's a superbly produced EP full of imaginative ideas to match the proficiency of the beats.

Review: The vibe stays low down and nasty as Unknown To The Unknown sublabel House Crime rolls into its fourth release. Whoever DJ Club 1235 is, they known how to make a no-nonsense hardware house jam, and "Constant" that leads this record is just that. Straight up gnarly bleeps over a basic stomping beat - sometimes that's all that you need to make a club wrecker. "Trust" is also a particular treat with its slightly more developed lead line and urgent drums, but don't overlook the shorter interlude tracks that make this an EP with many different shades of jack to it.

"Get Lit" joins the dots between the two in true lo-fi glory as a weirded out vocal loop grumbles beneath a series of clunky filtered layers that open out majestically as the track progresses. Beam us up Swagger.

Review: Interplanetary Criminal, whoever they may be, seems perfectly suited to the sort of ironic, laissez faire attitude that spews out of the E-Beamz label. The imprint has gotten a name for releasing artists who, first and foremost, make stunning house music with a distinctively raw edge, but ones who also like to take the whole underground scene with a pinch of salt. DJ Boring, DJ Playstation and DJ Longdick have all appeared on the catalogue and, if we were one day to find out that they were actually all the same two or three artists, we wouldn't be surprised. Concerning the music, however, "Intergalactic Jack" churns its 4/4 beats through subtle jungle influences and aquatic bass tones, while "Work" takes a step deeper into the analogue aesthetic with some seriously crusty drums and sharp synth work - a beauty! "Destiny" opens the flip with a surprisingly UK kind of sound, reminding us of the best of the garage days, while "Shawty" unleashes a magnetic dose of old-school hip-hop sounds in the form of rough but effective vocal samples. Some true swing in here.

Here he makes his debut on Enemy LTD, kicking things off with the metallic techno-funk brilliance of "Drag". The original, a no-nonsense blend of dexterous percussion programming, sludgy bass and complimentary electronics - is given a dark and distorted, no-holds-barred makeover by Amotik, while Dustin Zahn delivers a sparkling, intergalactic interpretation. Fittingly, Ambivalent finishes things off with "Buck", where wavering riffs and looped noises ride a thrusting, kick-drum dominating rhythm track.

Review: While he may not be a household name yet, Lamusa II shows great promise and a single on the ever strengthening Gravity Graffiti only supports this idea further. The Paris-based producer more than steps up to the esoteric qualities of the label with a rich spread of jams that channel 80s production values into curious grooves and plush vistas of ambience. "Rhythms# 1" and "Unknown Flute" are both ready for the floor, even if their respective synth rich atmospheres reach out to exotic climes, but elsewhere on this record there are even more wondrous places to travel to, where plastic piano, flute and harp sounds more magical than you could possibly imagine.

  2. Amnesia Beats (12:20)
Review: Here is one artist who has always stuck by what he does best. Ricardo Villalobos is no ordinary house or techno producer; he's a man with a simple vision who has preferred to carry on stripping techno down to its bare essentials. This new collaboration with Argenis Brito for the Melisma Limited label is Villalobos at his best: "Amnesia" rattles its bubbly, complex beat structure over diluted melodies and a Hispanic vocal sway, whereas "Amnesia Beats" acts like the dub-not-dub mix, a tribal dance structure with little care for big pads or storming chords. What these guys do best is work with as few elements as possible and take them to their very limits.

  3. Malouane - "667746" (4:32)
  4. Manuel Nie - "Brasilholzschlaeger" (4:18)
  5. Ibn Sabaa - "Stupid Loop" (1:35)
Review: Following last year's launch release Lyon lotharios In Any Case deliver another easy-vibe serenade with five more deliciously deep grooves from house to hip-hop. The currently unavoidable Tell kick starts with a warm jack that conjures feels on a Parrish level while fellow Lyon artist GS2 gets grainy and choppy with his feather ruffling heads-down session and Malouane takes us deep underwater with a blurry loop mesmeriser. Elsewhere Manuel Nie really jazzes it out with a sparse, break-based intro before splashing into sedate Iz & Diz and style soft jacks and Ibn Sabaa returns to the label to close the show with a deviant wonky cosmic beat session "Stupid Loop". There's nothing stupid about any of this.

  6. NightMoves - "Not Tonight" (5:22)
Review: Marketed as a "funky laboratory trying to deliver the positive vibes", Germany's Born To Shine imprint is now a reliable and incredibly accessible source for the best in contemporary funk, soul and that buzzword we sometimes refer to as 'jazz-dance'. This new compilation, Funk'n'Shine, is the imprint's testament to the enlarged genre of funk, and all of its associated sub genres and parallel influences. Six cuts means six fine, house-relied excursions that meander into jazz, breakbeat and beyond; our picks have to be L33's cosmic boogie stepper "I Care 4 You", Paul Whitey's insanely funky house melter ""Zodiac", Kali Boog's downtempo electro swings on "Dreams Of You", and Nightmoves' excellent house trip "Not Tonight". What a tidy lil' TIP this is!

Review: Our first release on is/was comes courtesy of Detroit's own Dwayne Jensen. For those in the know, Dwayne requires no introduction. Behind the decks since the 80's, Dwayne has carved himself a spot in the history books of Detroit house and techno. He's equally accomplished in the studio with releases on KMS, Dockside, Landed and his own Fathom Records imprint. This 4 tracker sees Dwayne in top form with 3 straight ahead, swung and stabby house tracks and 1 slow burner for the after hours.

  4. Dreamware (5:43)
Review: Another shadowy techno producer in the form of Kepler Sound District. Well, it is actually Southern Californian producer Urulu truth be told, who has had releases on Lets Play House and Voyage. After the promising debut of the first volume on Kepler Sound, he continues on with some cyclical and functional techno which starts off in explosive fashion on the adrenaline fulled "Metric" while thew A side also features the deep tribal house jam "Mylar". On the flip there's some deep down, dubby and dirty acid to be enjoyed on "Helix" while "Dreamware" continues on in a dubby percussive affair too much in the vein of Dorisburg.
