  1. Manic Cinq (6:46)
  2. Fuzzy Detail (5:31)
  3. Buy Freedom (6:18)
  4. OCGC (6:06)
Review: It would be fair to say that Morgan Geist's Megaprojects series is an attempt to go "back to basics". Not only are the tracks created using - in his words - "cheap drum machines and vintage synths", but also pay tribute to some of his earliest inspirations. In practice, that means doffing a cap to fluid and ear-pleasing early deep house on the glistening "Manic Cinq", pitched-down Italo-disco and bass-heavy early British techno ("Fuzzy Detail") and tactile, breakbeat-driven late '80s house (the rather wonderful "Buy Freedom"). Arguably best of all, though, is closer "OCGC", whose psychedelic acid lines, tactile synth bass and cheery synth melodies make the track sound like a cross between vintage Metro Area and Orbital's "Halcyon".

  3. Freundchen (Phil Gerus remix) (5:58)
Review: In late 2016, Hamburg nu-disco hero Tensnake served up yet another irresistible lo-slung anthem in the form of "Freundchen" and here come some more killer renditions by a who's who of the scene at present. Bergerac's Red Rack 'Em is first up with a loopy tool version which distills the track into its true essence: a respectful edit, if you will. Tuff City Kid Phillip Lauer is up next and works his signature magic as always on this classic house styled version, which will take you back to the UK's second Summer of Love. Finally, on the flip we have got Moscow's Phil Gerus with a neon-lit boogie down version: which we actually thought was the EP's finest moment.

  4. Buck (PDL remix) (5:54)
Review: The boys behind South London Analogue Material return with their fifth edition (following up a great previous edition by ABSL) with some brutalist and no holds barred techno. Ansome and Ossian go for the jugular right from the get go on the pulverizing onslaught of "Butch" while Ayacarna's remix up next takes the track into pure sonic noise terror. On the flip, the lo-fi and cyclical grind of "Buck" calls to mind early Mills or Regis and the PDL remix up next provides the most subtle moment on the record on this deep and hypnotic slow burner which was a real treat we must say.

Review: When not manning their own imprint BCR, French duo Arcarsenal (Alan Mathias and Etienne Dauta) are serving up bombs on Finest Hour, Rue De Plaisance and Finale Sessions. They appear here for Chez Damier's Inner Balance with the Alter Realities EP which serves up four sublime cuts of dark, dub inflected tech house that will appeal to fans other proponents such as Samuel Andre Madsen or iO Mulen. A side track "Hurricane" gets all Arctic on you with its mesmerising 'deepchords' and rolling bass while on the flip "The Vessel" is the most serious offering on here: it's Aril Brikha style synth leads leading to some truly hypnotic bliss.

  2. Turn Me On (7:56)
Review: Over the past five years Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold have laid down all manner of sizzling disco edit grooves that veer into spaced out, cosmic territory, but on this new joint for Blue Velvet they aim for the jugular with an abundance of cheeky licks from familiar sources. "Angel Dust" is set to get all manner of parties going wild with its classic hooks, while "Turn Me On" takes a smoother approach into romantic climes with equally recognisable sounds repurposed for the modern dancefloor. The samples may be easy to spot, but that just makes this record's appeal even more universal.

Review: Last year, Wewantsounds paid tribute to the funk, soul and deep jazz productions of the late, great Bob Shad, via an essential compilation entitled Feeling Good. This follow-up changes tack a little, picking out tracks - most of which are impossible to find or unknown outside of record collecting circles - that showcases Shad's work with spiritual jazz and funk artists. It's a predictably impressive collection, all told, with highlights including Buddy Terry's lengthy 1972 workout "Inner Peace", the sprawling jazz-funk brilliance of Frank Foster's "Requiem for Dusty" and Pete Yellin's wild and wonderful fusion epic, "Dance of Allegra". In other words, it's an impeccable selection of jazz and funk oddities produced by a master of his craft.

Review: Leyland Kirby never ceases to disappoint thanks to the variety of material that comes out through his 'History Always Favours The Winners' label and although he's set up camp in Krakow over the last few years, we still very much see him as the beating heart of modern UK leftfield. Memories Live Longer Than Dreams is his fifth LP under his own name and, as you'd imagine, this is deeply introspective affair. Ambient is at the core of this music, but the sounds across the album have a lot more in common with neo-classical thanks to their tone and placement. In other words, although this is music for the open-minded, nothing is random and no sound is out of place. Each and every segment has a particular narrative, which is undoubtedly sullen, and there is a focussed thread running through it all. It's music for thinkers and shapers; Kirby's fascination with moody, cavernous sounds is a constant source of inspiration and meditation.

  1. V.O.L.A.T. (9:56)
  2. Hydroplane (7:16)
Review: Braiden's material has been slow to come out since he first landed with a bang on Doldrums back in 2010. A turn on Rush Hour confirmed his status as a producer in command of the chops necessary to get a dancefloor shaking, but this year's X Years In London OST cassette was a chance for him to expand into more experimental pastures. Not so on this new 12" for his Off Out label, which finds Braiden turning up the heat with some fiercely modern tech house workouts. "V.O.L.A.T" has the same kind of dangerous earworm armour that made Paul Woolford's "Erotic Discourse" so potent all those years ago. "Hydroplane" meanwhile takes some of the crisp but playful tropes of Pearson Sound et al and straps them to a thrumming motorik beat.

Review: Level up! Analogue funkers Martin Arceneaux and Chris Arenas make their debut on the ever-rising beat bum haven Hobo Camp. As with their previous workouts on the likes of Austin Boogie Crew and Superjock, the emphasis is on full cream 80s synth boogie/disco funk and teaming up with the most distinctive vocalists possible; Natalia & E warm up the dance with a little deep house provocation, B Bravo drapes herself over the fattest bassline of the Ep, Love Child brings the purple feels to the hip-flaring "I Let Go" while Jackie Rain brings us back to earth with R&B sensuality on "Livin It Up". Game over.

Review: Jongno Edits are back with their fourth release and they got two tracks of pure Korean groove, by editing wizard Mori Ra. Side A is "Heavenly Me" (edit) which is a boogie banger that embraces all the elements of the top tunes of that era: strong drum beat, slappy bass synth and a violin break down. On the flip, there's "No One Knows" (edit) which is your perfect sunset balearic cut for this summer. The lush bell melodies perfectly match the suave voices so prepare your ascension to the clouds accompanied by delayed organs and acoustic guitar 'where Jeju becomes Ibiza'.

Review: Given that Aleksi Perala has self-released a phenomenal amount of music based around "the Colundi Sequence" - a custom musical scale that boasts 127 frequencies chosen "via experimentation and philosophy" - it can be hard for newcomers to know where to start. We'd suggest this hand picked collection of project highlights, which is Perala's second such compilation. As you'd expect, it contains some seriously good electronica, IDM and ambient music, all with unfathomable titles. While largely positive and jaunty in tone, Perala finds space to include the ghostly, piano-fired bliss of "UKR74R1512020", the frankly chilling drone antics of "UK74R1407020" and the spaced-out techno paranoia of "GBBVT1337202".

  1. Move D - "Roll Split" (7:23)
  2. Reagenz - "460 Melrose Ave" (9:15)
Review: Since the dawn of the 1990s, David "Move D" Moufang has been one of house and techno's most reliable producers. It's no surprise, then, that this double-header - featuring a solo production, and a fresh collaboration with Jonah Sharp under the long-running Reagenz alias - is pretty darn hot. Moufang's "Roll Split" is a deliciously spacey, emotion-rich and enveloping affair that builds to a head-spinning conclusion via waves of undulating Motor City electronics, tactile riffs, surging bass and intergalactic chords. The Reagenz tune, "460 Melrose Place", is similarly cosmic in outlook, with the veteran duo smothering a superb drum machine groove with stretched out chords, pulsating sub bass, glistening, ambient techno style motifs, and shuffling bongo hits.

Review: NYC party crew Kaviar Disco Club has been making has decided to launch its own label. Fittingly, the tracks on this debut release - largely beefed-up, house-friendly versions of old disco cuts - come from New York and Philadelphia-based producers. Jacques Renault kicks things off with a chunky, tooled-up version of orchestral disco stomper "You're Gonna Want Me Back", before Matpat fuses sax-laden excerpts from a classic disco staple with Prescription style deep house grooves. Over on the flip, Evan Michael steals the show with the delay-heavy disco-house hustle of "Just Like That" - a sweat-soaked, celebratory treat - while KDC resident DJ Higgins gets busy with the exotic disco madness of "Good Times".

Review: Montreal's shadowy Solitary Dancer returns serving up more noir tained and retro infused electronics in a bold fashion. Following up that fabulous Dualism EP for Dark Entries which featured homegirl Marie Davidson, he's back on Midland's Graded with his second release for the imprint entitled Transmitting To Heaven. After the deep and sinister acid electro of the title track, the deep and bleepy retro techno of "Birth Of Saturn" finishes the A side in style on this homage to the early '90s UK techno sound. On the flip, the nearly 10 minute ambient house journey "At The End Of The Corridor Of Love, A Loss" is just as mysterious as the producer himself.

Review: With an immaculate string of cosmic constructions on the likes of Rupture and 117 in the last year, it was only a matter of time before rising London beatsculpter Outer Heaven landed on the consistently-hurting UVB imprint. Both parties credentials speak volumes, as do the beats: the continuous cycles and twists of the title track, the cavernous room for thought on "Azimuth", the sludgier roller damage of "Moonfunk" and the classic foundation breaks on "Outback". Even the title is spot on... If "Pathos" doesn't appeal to your emotions you're one stone cold cookie.

Review: The man behind one of last year's most mesmerising tunes "Levanter" returns with two more absolutely mesmerising sonic spells. There's a strong organic feel to the instrumentation and gradual build of "Hermetica" as we're fried and plied around oceanic spaces in a similar way to The Hidden Orchestra. "The Connection" builds on the story with an even deeper tone as an oboe weaves wonders around the loose jazzy drums. As with his previous releases on Narratives, this really is one of a kind.

Review: Old school purist retro house sounds with a mandatory side serving of acid and all done rather respectfully and most of all convincingly. Limited release of 300 hand stamped copies, this is the union of Parisian/London based underground house labels Soleil De Nuit and Signatune. This London based producer has appeared previously on Parisian imprints such as Djebali and Robsoul which should give you an idea of what this guy's is about: raw, funky, dusty and loopy deepness. On the A side is the smooth and hypnotic groove of "AlbadaRE", while on the flip it's all about "X" which is the kind of dark and sexy swing fuelled house on the minimal tip, that you could imagine Daniel Bell playing in some dark Detroit basement at 6AM.

Review: Japanese junglist Ishio Dai presses up another Effective96 heavyweight handstamped white. Harnessing the magic of Skatalite's Jonny Moore on both sides, "Mirage" takes us deep into his own cloudy atmospheric universe upon a rolling jazz-minded drum arrangement while "Island Dub" strips everything right back to the crucial constituent parts to allow each rhythmic and dubbed element to sing. Singular.

Review: Although Henrik Schwarz has kept himself busy in recent years, it's been a while since he released a full-throttle dancefloor workout. This debut appearance on Gerd Janson's Running Back label - the German producer's first solo single 2013 - is arguably his most forthright and floor-friendly missive since the turn of the decade. "Not Only You" is a thumping techno stomper, where ragged, mutant, repetitive lead lines are propelled forwards by some seriously good drum machine programming. Flipside "Not You Also" offers a slightly more eccentric riff on the same blueprint, with Schwarz adding some eccentric spoken word segments and a couple of bold synth fills.

Review: Having given the Dream 2 Science album the wider audience it richly deserved earlier this year, Rush Hour dig out another NYC garage classic from the archives of Ben Cenac for a much deserved reissue. Unlike that album, this Sha-Lor record Cenac recorded in collaboration with vocalists Sharmelle and Lorrie back in 1988 gained wider success, becoming a Summer Of Love staple. It's not hard to see why "I'm In Love" proved so enduring on the A Side Caught Up mix either, with the duo's vocals still retaining a power to move some 24 years on, while Cenac's stripped back bass heavy production is NYC garage at its finest. This being Rush Hour, there's also the bonus of a previously unreleased instrumental version occupying the flip.

Review: The Abstract Eye is Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, a producer who releases music most using the monikers GB, The Reflektor, Frankie Reyes and Julian Abelar. Five prolific, soulful/melodic tracks originally released in 2011 on Valentine Connexion, now available again courtesy of Amsterdam's always reliable Rush Hour. The extraordinarily gifted Los Angeleno creates striking electronic songs here which integrate the technological with the spiritual and ancestral. There's respectful nods to Motor City greats like Japanese Telecom ("Cool Warm Divine") and John Beltran ("Nobody Else") on here. "Nobody Else Pt. 2" channels the cyclical/minimal soul of Internal Empire era Robert Hood: absolutely sublime!

Review: Although they've delivered plenty of fine singles over the years, it's invariably Session Victim's albums that get us hot under the collar. This is primarily because it gives them a chance to showcase a wider range of grooves, tempos and instrumentations amongst the ear-pleasing dancefloor workouts. Their sunny disposition, noted sample-spotting ability and varied inspirations are all in evidence on the German duo's third full-length excursion. It's a deliciously evocative, enjoyable and mood enhancing affair that smilingly meanders between dreamy jazz-house bliss, Bossa-Balearic fusion, disco-sampling cheeriness, glistening slow jams, Afro-tinged deep house warmth and humid dub riddims (the impeccable "Castle For Sale"). In other words, it's another hugely enjoyable romp packed full of winning moments.

Review: Hot Creations gear up to drop the eagerly anticipated new release by Rowan Jones aka Route 94. Echoing the excitement that surrounded his number one hit "My Love" which propelled him to stardom in 2014, the release has been in serious demand for months. Title track "House & Pressure" contains the vocals from Joey Negro's classic "Ride the Storm" featuring Linda Clifford. The dominant female vocal on the track, combined with the force of the drum machines makes for quite a powerful production. The affectionately titled "Crazy Bitch" has more of a big room sound and incorporates ghetto house elements. "Dark Keyless" is the complete opposite, creating a groove that aims to grab the crowd and let them loose. With a wealth of new material still on the way and a hectic touring schedule in place, it's clear this is only the start for the young artist.
