Review: Arguably no producer made a greater contribution to the Italian dream house sound - that most loved-up of deep house sub-genres - than Don Carlos, AKA Carlo Troja. If you need proof, then we advise checking out this collection of overlooked gems hand-picked by Echovelt Records. Opener "Inspiration" (taken from 2001's The Music On My Mind LP but reminiscent of his early '90s work) and closer "Moment" are both pure distillations of the colourful, sauced-eyed ethos of dream house. "Ambient Underground" - one of three selections from 1993's Aqua - is more tech-tinged and hypnotic, despite the presence of a spine-tingling breakdown, while "Dharma" is closer to his New Jersey-inspired work with Stefano Tirone under the Montego Bay alias.

Review: Some of you may remember Ricardo Vincenzo from his 2015 debut Pororoca Transatlantica, a two-track missive that blended South American production with all the warmth of sun-kissed downtempo electronica. If anything, this belated follow-up for esteemed Finnish label Sahko is even better. Vincenzo begins with the farmyard animal samples, rolling tribal percussion, African chants and rich electronic bass of "Cabras No Elevado Quilombia", before chopping and looping a dusty old tango track on the mid-tempo house pulse of "Onna No Yujo". On the flip you'll find the low-slung, post-dubstep creepiness of "Haru", where exotic vocal samples drift across a sparse but heavy beat pattern, and the aural trip to Morocco that is "Excellent Drom".

Review: No one can stop Joaquin Joe Claussel from delivering the absolute best in house. It's just what the man does best, and he's likely to continue churning out eats and new productions on a constant basis for the foreseeable future. This is the third part of his Unofficial Edits Overdubs & Unreleased Remixes, and it all starts with the moody, soul-induced lament of "You Owe Me", followed by the livelier and more danceable disco banger "Pass It On". On the flip, "Never Danced Before" is a banging little revisioning of the cult disco hit, and "Queen Africa" breaks out the jazz horns to come through with an 11 minute journey that will please everyone from the house heads to the soul divas. Yes, Joe!

Review: Themes From Great Cities' latest chunk of inspired, hard-to-define goodness comes from Mekine U Teksi, a fresh outfit formed by Murat Goktas and Irfan Derin. Dedicated to legendary, currently closed Dusseldorf venue Salon Des Amateurs, the mini-album - the duo's debut release - is shot through not only with the arpeggio-driven pulse of vintage '80s new wave, but also the chugging attitude of psychedelic nu-disco and the exotic, intoxicating melodies of traditional Arabic music. Of course, there are other influences that make their presence felt throughout - krautrock, dark Italo-disco, punk funk and dub disco - but these merely serve to enhance the duo's core sound, which is rarely less than enthralling.

Review: Berlin's Noha is back with a great three tracker for Archie Hamilton's vinyl only imprint Moss Co: a division of Moscow Records. The Nabuco boss serves up the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Loop Di Mare" on the A side: with its sleek arpeggios and rolling rhythms bringing the heat. On the flip, there's the strongly percussive and deeply dubby house that you've come to know from the label on "Cat", while head honcho Hamilton himself appears with a remix up next. His version is rolling and funky with the main room at pre-peak time in mind: White Isle here we come!

  4. Jack Wickham - "1122" (8:09)
Review: Five years on from its debut 12", In Haus Wax reaches double figures. Like many of the label's releases, EP number 10 contains cuts from a number of different artists of In Haus Wax. Miffy & Miller lead the charge with two tasty morsels: the rolling, bass-heavy beats and darting Underground Resistance melodies of "Groove Like Me", and the undulating, electro-influenced minimal house shuffle of "Exactly That". Elsewhere, Cntrl impresses with the vintage Swag blips, starburst electronics and swinging, late night percussion of "Modest", while Jack Wickham builds a chunky, stretched-out groover around incessant analogue bass, wavy synthesizer motifs and deep space electronics.

Review: Prolific experimentalist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe returns to Demdike Stare's quietly impressive DDS imprint, some 12 months on from his last outing on the label. Like many of the modular synthesizer and analogue hardware-loving artist's albums, Levitation Praxis: Part 4 (we're not sure what happened to parts one to three) is made up of two long, meandering and hugely atmospheric pieces. Intriguingly, these both use a human voice - largely the improvisations of a lone female singer, which are in turns haunting and enchanting - as much as Lowe's usual droning sonic textures, gently throbbing synthesizer figures and outboard effects. The results are naturally hugely impressive, though we'd expect nothing less from the one of electronic music's most distinctive composers.

  4. Slow-Drifting Years (6:31)
Review: Chicago underground legend Da Rand Land presents his Urban Imagery imprint, now onto its fifth release. This is the reflection of the struggles and emotions of the inner city through music, where Jose Lau delivers his second release entitled Uprooted Soul. Here are four tracks from familiar territory by a producer who originally hails from Nicaragua. Evident in Lau's debut release are the unique melding of traditional deep house elements with unassuming latin/funk style percussion, as heard on the slinky and sultry "Slow-Drifting Years". A constant throughout is his masterful use of Chicago house style basslines ("Keep It Deep") and delicate pad movements alongside minor-key melodic underpinnings, like on "Mysterious Shaker". The outcome is buffered by lo-fi harmonics and dub overtones. This is late night introspective music to its core.

  6. Blending Light (10:32)
Review: According to their online profile, Amorf is a "live experimental techno project". Quite how much improvisation went into this debut album is unclear, though we can confirm that it's really rather good. The Romanian trio begins by smothering a glitchy, minimal techno groove with tumbling piano lines on "Ouverture", before offering a warmer, richer and more musically expansive variation on the same theme ("Marquis of Dust"). There's a pleasingly deep and breezy feel to "Haze" (all smooth bass, electro-influenced beats, acid-style electronics and jazzy flourishes), while "Curiosity Step" sees them make merry with fuzzy electric piano solos and hypnotic, locked-in beats. Arguably best of all, though, is "Blending Light", an immaculate fusion of deep house and tech-house that's as dreamy and picturesque as they come.

Review: There are no boundaries for Fun Records when it comes to spreading its refreshing sounds, beyond trends or what's predictable. That's why its fifth release comes courtesy of Mariano Mateljan. The infamous Croatian DJ/producer (Baile Musik/Gilesku) is one of the most talented and recognised electronic music artists in the country and abroad. The Nibong EP comes with four tracks, traced by the analogue details that characterise every one of Fun's releases. But there is even more behind the pristine minimal house on offer. The title track's analogue bounce is reminiscent of early Daniel Bell, while the rolling and hypnotic "Slippery Slope" is perfect for Berlin or Bucharest style afterhours weirdness. On the flip, things take an even wackier turn for the EP's finest moment: mini-funk/microhouse tripper "Lotus" which channels those Perlon style vibes.

Review: Hannah "DJINN" Garvey has yet to break through as a producer, despite contributing some tight tracks to a number of well regarded, multi-artist EPS. Dark Reference is her debut solo EP and shows rather a lot of promise. Check, for example, the clandestine creepiness of opener "Nine Grounds", a dark jungle rinse out full of authentic early '90s breakbeat edits, moody aural textures and delay-laden ragga vocal samples. The paranoid darkness continues throughout, from the rolling, bass-heavy bustle of "Destructive Consequence" and dubwise hustle of closer "Pressure", to the sweaty madness of title track "Dark Reference". In other words, it's a superior collection of revivalist jungle workouts.

Review: Serious summertime loving right here from Wah Wah's right hand maestro Scrimshire. Continuing to build on his impeccable editry reputation, here he provides three floor-ready feel good twists that do nothing but add to the originals' legacies. Chaka Khan's iconic slinky bassline gets all looped and tonked on "Sommer Love", Merry Clayton (who he's edited before with "Grandma's Hands") gets a little tempo injection and much more extension in the groove while McNeal + Niles' classic lolloping hazy soul jaunt enjoys a wry little electronic dusting. Slow, low and loaded with love...

Review: Tsuruda and Huxley Anne's Paint bridges the parallel movements of LA beats and UK halftime with a resounding quartet of unclassifiability. Gritty, strange and coated in warped textures throughout, at one moment we're being hurled into space (the build on "Beast Mode"), the next we're swimming against the waves of mystical 23rd century Wu beats ("Gaiden") before being pushed deep into a toxic bass swamp where the kicks shift beneath your feet. "Reverie" finishes on a more contemplative note as far-away humanised elements and lolloping beats remind us just how much more fusion potential there is between the two movements.

Two sides, one super-tight groove; the original pressings of "Ham Hocks & Beans" have fetched a tasty $600 as recently as 2015. Review: Nomadico is Dan Caballero aka the Underground Resistance affiliated DJ Dex. His new Gentefication EP is inspired by the movement of the same name in East Los Angeles that's striving to maintain the local street culture without selling out to real estate developers and hipsters. More power to 'em we say! The title track on the A side is emotive hi-tech soul: just the way we like it and sounding like his old days with Los Hermanos or Ican. The gritty B side cut "Graff Walk" was probably our favourite of the bunch. With its buzzy sub bass snarl and rusty spitfire rhythm patterns going for some proper 'street techno' style. This really is a soundtrack for 'young barrio coders, digital artists and community organizers.' as Yaxteq claim. And they'll certainly continue to honour high-tech urban innovation that goes against all expectations.

Review: Cong Burn is a new label that features a range of producers plying a more interesting twist on the standard deep house formula. Take opening case in point Haddon, who uses oodles of processing to create a slippery, shifting tripper out of "Not Coming To The Club" and instantly stepping aside from the run of the mill milieu. Howes then pops up with the snaking, ultra-deep electro abstractions of "Untitled". L Pearson is in a particularly cheeky mood with the scratchy micro-sampling fun of "PSR1170", calling to mind the crafty chops of Paradroid et al, and then Perfume Advert book end the release with some beautifully horizontal deep house for the subliminally minded to revel in.

Review: Stephen Brown's "Deep In" first surfaced last summer, delivering a breezy dancefloor punch to the guts full of bouncy techno drums, analogue synth-bass and fluttering vocal samples. A year on it returns, this time reworked by long serving Berlin producer Len Faki. On the A-style you'll find the "Hardspace Mix", in which Faki puts a rocket under the Edinborough producer's original. While it remains bouncy and the female vocal samples take pride of place, the percussion is tougher and closer in feel to classic Motor City rhythms. Turn to side B and you'll find the "Deepsace Mix", a thrillingly hypnotic interpretation seemingly tailor made to cause commotion in German clubs at 7am. Deep, driving and percussive, it's a real Teutonic treat.

Soul
  1. Let Your Light Shine (3:28)
  2. Somebody Help Me (2:31)
Review: Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has described Willie Dale's "Let Your Light Shine" as "one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years". Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

Replacement stylus for M44G cartridge, ideal for techno/house DJs
Notes: The Shure N44G/N44GQ stylus is the replacment stylus for the Shure M44G cartridge. Shure are slowly but surely building up a dj customer base. These DJs will not use anything but shure cartridges and styli. The look is oldskool and the performance is groundbreaking, if you have not yet checked out shure products then now may well be the time. This particular stylus is rich, warm, tight, with high skip resistance and is decribed as being ideal for house/techno DJs.

  3. Chimicalissimo (dub mix) (8:02)
Review: Considered the anti-hero of disco music, Argoman literally means 'lazy man', however it's also a combination of three Italian producer's names who started the project about one year ago. Any guesses who they might be? We will leave that to you! The track "Chimicalissimo" is new wave Italo disco at its finest, featuring peak-time dancefloor energy completely produced with analogue synths and drum machines. Gerd Jason and Fabrizio Mammarella team up again as Black Spuma and their remix turns the track into a slow burning disco monster. The dub version gives more space to a melancholic piano melody that culminates through analogue arpeggios to an unstoppable build.

Review: Emotional Rescue continue to mine hidden corners of esoteric music to bring your rarified delights in a freshly mastered form. This time the label has turned to cult Spanish label Auxilio De Ciento, who have been quietly picked up by more tuned in heads for their excellent new wave, synth pop and industrial wares. La Caida De La Casa Usher present the most abrasive material on here, but largely it's a relaxed affair. You can lose yourself in the bubbling synthesizer goodness of Bene Gesserit and Danny Alias, or trip out to the pattering drums of Zazou, Nodland, Lema.
