Review: The legend DJ Pierre digs through the vaults for a 12 track/12 artist double LP showcasing acid's true pioneers from around the world. Acid 88 features new and original tracks from some of the style's top producers that are flying the flag today for the Roland TB 303: Luke Vibert, Tyree Cooper, Mr. C, Posthuman, K Alexi Shelby and many more. Dedicated to the memory of Phuture co-founder DJ Spank Spank and respected German acid producer Andreas Gehm: who both passed away before their time in the summer of 2016. Each of them have a track included. Black & Yellow Vinyl with DJ Pierre's acid history in the sleeve notes.

Review: Fans of jazz legend Thelonious Monk have long talked in hushed tones about the pianist's long-lost soundtrack to out of print 1960 French flick Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Thrillingly, the album is finally getting a release, some 58 years after Monk and his quartet of additional players gathered to record it in New York City. The original, unreleased soundtrack album - a superb mixture of softly-spun jazz mood-setters and fizzing up-tempo workouts - is featured on the first slab of wax, with the second boasting alternate takes, cuts from a hard-to-find period 7" single, and even an extended track charting the "making of" LP highlight "Light Blue". If you still need tempting, the album comes accompanied by a booklet containing extensive sleeve notes and rare, archive photographs.

  1. Leroy Hutson - "Get To This (You’ll Get To Me)" (Alex Attias edit) (6:39)
  2. Michael Gregory Jackson - "Risin’ Up" (Alex Attias edit) (6:19)
Review: For the first installment in the Vision Inc's LillyGood Party series, label founder Alex Attias (previously of Compost Records fame) returns from artistic exile to deliver two re-edits of forgotten gems. On the A-side, he takes his scalpel to Leroy Hutson's "Get To This (You'll Get To Me)", a 1978 chunk of glassy-eyed sweetness that sits somewhere between laidback disco and horn-heavy jazz-funk. Attias' version is fairly reverential, offering a club-friendly version created by extending key passages. There's more jazz-funk flavour on the flip, where Michael Gregory Jackson's 1979 cut "Risin' Up" - all ear catching clarinet motifs, bold pianos and fusion grooves - is stretched out in all the right places.

Review: Having spent much of 2016 focusing on the 20th anniversary of his impressive Freerange label, Jamie "Jimpster" Odell returns with his long-awaited sixth full-length, his first album since 2013's much admired Porchlight & Rocking Chairs. As you might expect, Silent Stars is a musically expansive affair, with the producer's usual floor-friendly deep house workouts being accompanied by tracks that pay homage to starry jazz-funk (brilliant opener "Migrations"), synthesizer-heavy new age ambient (the wonderful "Sylvanshine"), loose and languid Balearica (Jinadau collaboration "The Sun Comes Up"), Floating Points Ensemble style jazz ("Tau Tona"), modern soul ("Everytime") and even a touch of Osunlade style tribal bounce ("Silent Stars"). In other words, it's superb.

Review: For Record Store Day 2017 Razor-N-Tape presents "Icarus", a slice of chilled out analogue soul by Lovebirds aka Sebastian Doering with remixes. The original is a deep soul jam reminiscent of Roy Ayers' Ramp project, while the Tall Black Guy's remix gets more of an R&B swagger on in style. We particularly enjoyed JKriv's lush little boogie down rendition, which really hit that sweet spot in all its neon lit glory. Each mix gets its own side in this double 7" pack, with stunning full color artwork, making it a truly special package perfect for both

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

  3. Wu15 - "The Anthem" (5:04)
  4. Henry Wu - "Shahada" (2:53)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Henry Wu and K15 would link up with London's Eglo, and their respective prior releases for the likes of Wild Oats, Rhythm Section and 22a have earned them a spot in one of the finest house and broken beat labels around. "Love's Gambit" is a perfect example of the latter genre, a sublime blend of jazzy percussion swings and smooth melodic drifts, followed by the even more soulful bounces of the gentle "Space & Time" - one for the jazz fusion heads! "The Anthem" heads towards more housey spheres thanks to its stable beat pattern - it-s an absolute peach of a tune, by the way - but it's "Shahada" that governs the dancefloor with its rough MPC drum programming and finger-licking synth rotations. A beautiful and fitting addition to the catalogue.

Review: For the second installment in Dekmantel's ongoing 10th anniversary series, the well-regarded Dutch label has recruited two notable talents: man-for-all-seasons Call Super, and fast-rising producer Shanti Celeste. Call Super's A-side excursion is a pleasingly tactile, spacey and rubbery affair, with vintage bleeps and Motor City electronics crowding around a drum machine groove that sits somewhere between body popping electro and loved-up deep house. Shanti Celeste takes a different approach on the flip, fusing her usual mood-enhancing synthesizer chords and melodies with a raw, energy-filled rhythm track that owes more to late night techno than the sumptuous deep house of her early productions.

Review: First Word welcome an absolute musical legend to the fold: Kaidi Tatham has recorded and/or performed with some of the very best names in contemporary funk, soul and jazz from Amy Winehouse to Bugz In The Attic. Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. Ranging from the lounge-licking organ-massaging opener "Treacle Manifestations" to the Innervisions-era Wonder fusion frenzy "Shims", this - like everything he's done - is work of pure art. Essential.

Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton is a long time friend of the FUSE London family, having previously contributed to a number of releases. Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the three tracks; compare, for example, the shuffling tech-house grooves and flamenco guitars of B-side "Channelled", with the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.

Review: The number 13 may be unlucky for some, but it appears to have had no effect on the quality of the Secret Squirrels' club-ready disco manipulations. In fact, it could be argued that the series' 13th vinyl missive is amongst its best to date. A-side "Track 1" makes merry with a throbbing, piano-heavy disco number, adding expert chops, loops and house style drums for guaranteed dancefloor pleasure. The temperature is raised further on flipside "Track 2", where punchy horn lines, life-affirming organ solos, undulating electronics and dubbed-out vocal samples ride a beefed-up disco-funk groove. As usual, the original source material and editors responsible are closely guarded secrets, but neither really matters; these are scorching dancefloor jams, and that's all that counts.

Review: La Differencia, Dutch singer Hubertus Richenel Baars' 1982 debut, has long been considered something of a slept-on classic by those in the know. Charmingly lo-fi and homemade in feel, the cassette's 10 tracks - six of which are featured on this first ever vinyl reissue - brilliantly joined the dots between blue-eyed soul, spacey electro, disco, electrofunk and slap-bass wielding space boogie. As usual, Music From Memory has done a terrific job with the re-mastering; the tracks sound stronger than ever, if even they have retained some of the charming fuzziness of Baars' original production. All told, it's another essential reissue from Music Is Memory.

These custom-designed inner sleeves protect against all common problems associated with regular sleeves of all types, such as scratching, static build-up and contamination etc.

Your records are irreplaceable, these sleeves will guarantee they last a lifetime.

  6. Open Soul
Review: Given his renowned crate-digging credentials, it's little surprise that Floating Points is a big fan of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. The thing is, though, it's a terrific album, as this welcome reissue on the producer's Melodies International imprint proves. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

  4. Energy Theme (5:38)
Review: This attractive 12" marks a welcome return to Bahnsteig23 for rising star Kris Baha. In keeping with the label's decidedly off-kilter approach, the EP's four tracks variously draw influence from krautrock, post-punk disco, industrial, EBM and wonky, arpeggio-heavy Italo-disco. We're particularly enjoying the stretched-out, dub-wise drug-chug of opener "Lockdown", though the gently bubbling industrial funk and hard-wired dancefloor throb of "Relapse '83" and undulating, dubbed-out Italo flex of "Mind Unit Theory" are both quietly impressive. Closer "Energy Theme", an acid-fried slab of weirdo electro in the vein of Mark Stewart circa 1984, is also rather good.

Review: Julien Sabre and Konstress' Blind Box label is branching out with a new sublabel entitled Blind Box Basic, which seeks to explore "a more minimalistic approach to the dance floor." In order to get things rolling, they're turning to Chris Carrier and his Monsieur Georget alias for three tracks of on-point, rolling house grooves. Carrier's experience in handling heads down tracks is evident throughout, from the insistent surge of "Geogette" to the hazy tones of "Balade Sur Le Chemien De Fer", while "Mais Ou Se Cache Donc Le Zebu" heads straight to freaked out minimal territory.

Review: Melbourne techno larrikins Butter Sessions are back with more of their trademark blend of tongue in cheek grooves. Label head honchos Sleep D team up with one Albrecht La'Rooy here. Starting off with some deeply hypnotic techno in the form of "From 50" featuring some reverb drenched 303 action that'd make Andreas Tilliander stand up and notice. The sublime ambient house journey "Hotham" finishes up side A. On the flip, it's a deeper affair on "Banksia" while "Sleeping Patterns" finishes off the track with another lush and beatless journey that is perfect for drifting.

Review: Ireland's Lunar Disko is back in the game with another one of their immensely entertaining collaborative EPs, and this one is featuring a selection of artists whom we feel particularly fond of. For starters, our man man John Heckle is in the place repping the UK-side of techno, leading the lines with the wonky, off-kilter electro-acid cut named "Steel Sky", while label regular Conan comes through with an insanely lo-fi techno cut called "Neptune Racing" that feels like it was made in the basement of a sweaty Chicago studio circa 1989. On the flip, 214, who is another familiar face, drops an aerial attack in the form of a paranoid, brooding artillery of glitchy electro by the name of "Deep Ellum", whereas VC-118A's relatively more placid "Face The Waves" delves into a much deeper and floaty downtempo mode for the early, early sets...

Review: Simone Vescovo, better known as Simoncino, kicks off another venture for a regular haunt of his, Sydney's Thug Records, under the Ron Jason moniker. The invitation of Larry Heard on remix duties should tell you something about this release, and the classic deep house tones that come drifting out of the assembled tracks certainly take their cue from Heard's most tender moments. At each turn the beats feel stiff but soft, giving up as much space as possible to the warming bass lines, chiming keys and ethereal pads, and between the originals and Heard's two remixes there's little to tell between them, which should come as something of a compliment for Vescovo.

Review: The career rebirth of long-serving British duo 100Hz, whose fine debut 12" "Low Frequency Overload" dropped way back in 1989, continues apace. Following fine recent outing on Bosconi and Veniceberg they resurface on Howl. There's naturally much to admire, from the mildly foreboding electronics, swirling chords and rubbery drum machine beats of "Howl009.1" and vintage bleep-meets-Jaydee throb of "Howl009.2", to the bass-heavy, pitched-down weirdness of closer "Howl009.4". Arguably best of all, though, is the analogue positivity of "Howl009.3", where bright electric piano lines and Balearic synthesizer flourishes work in glorious union with ragged acid bass and a bustling, breakbeat house rhythm.

  4. Sune - "I'll Be Right Back" (5:27)
Review: The second instalment in the Tale of Tales series brings with it four more reasons to be cheerful. Dirt Crew regular Felix Leifur steps up first with "Eitt", a lovably loose, dusty and occasionally wonky trip into blazed jazz-house territory. The jazzy mood continues on Toy Tronics duo COEO's rolling deep houser "Clouds", before Moony Me peppers a bustling, organic-sounding groove with sparkling synth refrains and drowsy chords on the thrillingly hazy "Soul Mirage". Sune opts for a far more bustling, chunkier beat pattern on skewed disco-house caper "I'll Be Right Back", which features some superbly cut-up and rearranged vibraphone solos alongside punchy horn samples and a brilliant post-breakdown drop.

Review: Manchester lo-fi house imprint Natural Sciences return with another release by Japanese producer Aquarium aka Deepspace. Following up last years brilliant Midnight At The Tokyo Central. These tributes to the early days of techno and acid house emanate through the static hum of vintage machines and the dense hiss of tape saturation on this romantically futuristic concept album which you could imagine playing while Blade Runner shows in the background. Or as the label best describe themselves as 'a hazy bygone recollection of biological matter as we sink into concrete, junk and mechanical S&M.'

Review: London label Spinning Plates steps up for round three with the lesser known talents of Nekhsa throwing down some crucial electro styles. "132 Breaks" is an utterly minimalist slice of drum machine funk, and completely infectious with it, while "Some Jan" works a cheeky bassline rub into the sparse soundscape. "Back In 4" and "BIDNIZ" are both just as reduced in their construction, but then it's up to DJ Spider to weigh in with a pair of remixes that find the New York producer on savage form. His version of "BIDNIZ" is a dense, cloying workout loaded with sinister sound design, while "Some Jan" turns into an apocalyptic techno destroyer in his capable hands.
