Review: Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has been on our map since the late 00s, but it was his recent two-tracker for the excellent Type label which really cemented his strain of electronica into the back of our minds; an even more recent EP for Latency sealed the deal thanks to a magnificently percussive swarm of outsider electronics. More Than Human feels like precisely the sort of imprint that he should be landing on, especially if it's with an album like the present Two Orb Reel. Across 14 tracks, Lowe unleashes a controlled whirlpool of sonics, masterfully coaxed into a muddy, swamped sort of amalgam that explores the uncharted frontiers of ambient and beyond. Tunes like "Interzone Bureau Desk" provide movement amid the loose atmospherics, and others like "Telassar" offer a more tribal perspective to the equation. This is a fine LP, and one which will endlessly please those looking for something deep and mystical. 10/10.

Review: Continually on-point, Spirit follows his recent Function 12" with two more outstanding moments in musical futurism. "Think" surfaces from the dubplate ocean once and for all with its overwhelming dub tidal waves and soul-shuddering pads while "Bounty Killer" just goes straight for the jugular with a vicious riff that stinks of The End around '99. Classic Spirit.

Review: Now this is the way for a new label to launch... Celebrate the music of one of Romania's most on-point techno exports in recent times on a limited coloured vinyl. Sonath is off to a firing start with those stats before we even get to the gilded aquatic harmonies and warm kicks of "Umblet In Sihla" or the latent drum funk and barbed sub-melody of "Pealoc De Barbizon". Soulful, robust and tailored for deep mix pleasure, this is a serious statement of intent.

Review: While Nick Hoppner's 2015 debut album, Folk, was rather impressive, it would be fair to say that this follow-up is even better. While that set was largely rooted in hazy and evocative deep house and melodic techno, Work sees the Panoramabar resident drawing from a far deeper pool of influences. So, he begins with a superb chunk of melodious IDM ("All By Themselves (My Belle)") and the throbbing, warehouse-friendly jauntiness of "Clean Living" before dropping the album's first tech-tinged house roller ("In My Mind"). The pattern continues throughout, as he variously turns his hand to future garage (the jazzy "Hole Head"), watery dub techno ("The Dark Segment"), sumptuous late '80s dream house ("Fly Your Colours") and superb electronic/acoustic fusion (clarinet-sporting closer, "Three is a Charm").

  1. Right My File (8:09)
  2. I Want Your Back (6:05)
Review: Suave Parisian scalpel-botherer Dimitri From Paris continues to churn out top notch re-edits, slightly altering his famous production persona from label to label. Here, he delivers a second 12" for Razor 'N' Tape under the Dimitri From Brooklyn alias. Like its' predecessor, it features a couple of stone cold bangers. "Right My File" offers a thunderous, housed-up take on a lesser-known cover version of Dan Hartman's grandiose disco smasher "Relight My Fire" - all vocal breakdowns, big builds and big-lunged sing-along moments. As for "I Want Your Back", it re-casts Dimitri as The Reflex, laying down a version of The Jacksons' "I Want You Back" that sounds like it was done from the multi-track parts. It is, of course, dancefloor dynamite.

Review: Recent reviews of Spirit, Depeche Mode's first studio set for four years, have remarked at how angry and frustrated the band seems to be throughout. Messers Gore, Gahan and Fletcher are not particularly happy with the way the world is right now, and have laid down an album of rare intensity, seemingly fuelled by a growing desperation at political events on both sides of the Atlantic. Producer James Ford undoubtedly played a role in defining the sound of Sprit, but the combination of raucous, punk style guitars, thrusting electronics and big choruses is what we've come to expect from Depeche Mode.

Review: Imagine that you're slumped atop a steep hill, watching the sun slowly rise as birds begin to tweet in the surrounding trees. It's that sensation - if not this very specific scenario - that seems to have been the inspiration behind Dawn Chorus, the third album from Joe Acheson's Hidden Orchestra project. Smothered in evocative field recordings, the album's ten tracks - each with a location-specific title - are a joyous celebration of the first flush of morning. With Acheson and friends delivering quietly positive, beautiful and picturesque pieces that join the dots between jazz, electronica and dawn-fresh acoustic music, the result is a concept album that not only justifies its overriding theme, but also sounds spectacular.

Review: Chuck 'em in a black bag and give 'em a blotchy stamp. That's Delsin's modus operandi when it comes to re-releasing their favourite older material. And following their re-up of Son.Sine's beautiful Upekah 12", Claro Intelecto's first ever release makes its way on to the prominent Dutch label, a solid decade after it was first released on the now defunct Ai Records. For that 'must have' feeling "Tone" is the track you want to hear first; a gnarly acid work out of Drexciya-influenced techno that's been dragged through the mud and sounds all the better for it. Before that though there's a deeper and electro-leaning "Peace Of Mind (Electosoul)", and while "Signifier" mirrors it somewhat, it's deep house that's pure as the driven snow. And if you needed any more proof that Intelecto is the master of a phat-bassline, look no further than "Contact".

Review: Amsterdam-based graphic designer turned producer Young Marco has previously shown hints of greatness, most notably with a pair of superb 12" singles on ESP Institute that layered picturesque melodies atop huggable analogue grooves. Here, he delivers his debut album, Biology, and it's every bit as warm, imaginative and luscious as his previous work. Each of the album's seven tracks is something of a gem, from the crystalline, new age house of "Sea World" and Vangelis Katsoulis-inspired ambience of "Out of Wind", to the Italo-influenced dancefloor pulse of "Suzaku" and rush-inducing, synth-heavy brightness of "Can You Really Feel It". It's one of those albums that will brighten up even the dreariest of days, and those sets are arguably few and far between.

Review: Emotional Rescue continue their exploration of the cult Miami label Dancefloor Records with this slice of sensual deep house heaven from the obscure Eighth Ray. Originally released in 1991, this is tripped out dance music of the highest order that, as the press release rightly says, aligns with the honey-coated grooves that were emanating from Italy at the time. With its effortless joie de vivre and warm, clear production, "Axis Of Love" is a perfect warm up or melt out jam. "8th Ray" is a more bleepy affair that wouldn't sound out of place rubbing up against some of the early Warp Records jams.

Review: Adam Beyer teams up with Pig & Dan on the new Capsule EP and they sure aren't messing around. The Drumcode boss knew he could call upon his label stalwarts for EP packed full of main room power tools with the peak time in mind. The adrenalised, forceful stomp and grind of the title track gets things off to a good start, while the druggy and head rush inducing muscle of "In Love" is bound for some real hands in the air moments. On the flip "We Are E" leaves little to the imagination on this heady and bass driven trip through the early hours of a heaving stadium dancefloor... where things are starting to get real weird. Then those ravey church organs come in and it starts getting right crazy!

Review: Pure Japanese gold... The multi-aliased Jun Kamoda serves up a freaky disco bomb right here. "Blind Disco" is a frenzied blend of afro-stutters, carnival spirits and thumping Optimo-style drums that's tailor-made for summer silliness. "Ramen Funk" restrains affairs slightly with its lofi haze and big swing breakbeat. With insistent cowbells and a juicy-bottomed bassline setting the scene, things get really exciting when the glistening guitars stroke into the jam. B-boy to the very core.

Review: Kon and The Reflex team up on 12" with two neatly contrasting edits of Chaka Khan's premiere lady bomb "Every Woman". Kon plays the lavish extension card, adding extra emphasis on the instrumentation while The Reflex goes for a warmer finish, squaring his focus on the juicy bassline while adding a little cymbal magic to the rhythm. Both authentic and hugely respectful to the original, this is effectively an edit masterclass that we all need to pay attention to.

Review: The number 13 may be unlucky for some, but it appears to have had no effect on the quality of the Secret Squirrels' club-ready disco manipulations. In fact, it could be argued that the series' 13th vinyl missive is amongst its best to date. A-side "Track 1" makes merry with a throbbing, piano-heavy disco number, adding expert chops, loops and house style drums for guaranteed dancefloor pleasure. The temperature is raised further on flipside "Track 2", where punchy horn lines, life-affirming organ solos, undulating electronics and dubbed-out vocal samples ride a beefed-up disco-funk groove. As usual, the original source material and editors responsible are closely guarded secrets, but neither really matters; these are scorching dancefloor jams, and that's all that counts.

Review: There's a bountiful amount of chunkiness to be savoured on this prime reissue of classic Kerri Chandler, reaching back to '98 and the bastion of soul-enriched house music, Nervous Records, to deliver the kind of heat that has made Chandler one of the undisputed greats of the scene. "Just Livin'" positively oozes class with its wigged out synth lines, dense and clattering drums and unmistakable bump, while "Dream Scape" takes things in a softer direction buffeted along by a pumping beat while the melodies stay smooth and sweet on top. "Union City Nights" injects a little Latin passion into proceedings, and "Rain" is of course one of Chandler's most iconic moments, all shuffling hats, delicate chimes and soulful vox. A highly worthy reissue.

Released 1969 (just three years before Linda died, aged 27), both sides hit hard with raw soul power. "I Just Can't Live My Life" stomps with Stax gutsiness while "My Heart" eases back off the tempo and gives the backing singers and soaring strings a chance to shine with Linda. Review: Japan's disco don Matthew Bruce aka Max Essa is back with a three part track, namely Themes From The Hood, The Cad & The Lovely, on one side of vinyl, plus two more on the flip. Recording for a decade, this prolific producer has big hits like "Panorama Suite/Uptown Vibration" that have long been in Hell Yeah boss Marco Peedoo's record bag. The story goes that Essa first approached the label with a bunch of tracks until a good correspondence alchemy ensued and together the artist and label decided to put out the most timeless 12" possible. This is music that will calm busy minds now and forever.

Review: This attractive 12" marks a welcome return to Bahnsteig23 for rising star Kris Baha. In keeping with the label's decidedly off-kilter approach, the EP's four tracks variously draw influence from krautrock, post-punk disco, industrial, EBM and wonky, arpeggio-heavy Italo-disco. We're particularly enjoying the stretched-out, dub-wise drug-chug of opener "Lockdown", though the gently bubbling industrial funk and hard-wired dancefloor throb of "Relapse '83" and undulating, dubbed-out Italo flex of "Mind Unit Theory" are both quietly impressive. Closer "Energy Theme", an acid-fried slab of weirdo electro in the vein of Mark Stewart circa 1984, is also rather good.

Review: Canadian label Silent Season continues its mission to marry modern electronic music processes with the ancient nature of the label's base on Vancouver Island, this time turning to Mosam Howieson to deliver a four track EP of ambient techno experimentation. The Melbourne-based artist has a unique approach that should appeal to lovers of heavyweight bass pressure and subtle, moody cinematics, not least on opening track "I". There's a submerged acid throb to "Ii", but only after time spent lingering in a beatless reverie. Loaded with surprises at every turn, this record has a lot of depth that should it rewarding faithful listeners for a long time to come.

  2. Kazumi Cycle (7:48)
  3. Contagion (5:30)
Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: After the success of his debut album, Burnski returns to Constant Sound with a 4 tracker designed for the dance floor. "Circuits" opens this new EP - for his own Constant Sound label - with a fiery, electrifying procession of telly drums and fidgety percussion folds, and this is stripped back even further on the magnetic banger entitled "X". Over on the B-side, "Flight 723" aptly takes us on a deeper journey, filled with mysterious synths tricks and imperceptible pad sounds, while "Lost In Translation" clicks away to a more familiar minimal tone, rounded off and sleeked into motion by deep, wondrous gleams of dubbiness.

Review: Archeo are at it again, finding yet more hidden delights from Italy's bountiful musical past. Paolo Modugno's Brise D'Automne originally came out in 1988 and has since been highly coveted by record collectors fascinated with the new age delights contained within. Archeo have gone all out for this reissue, pressing the album on heavy vinyl to allow the music to really breathe, and adding a second disc with two tracks previously unavailable on vinyl. The curious fusion of organic and electronic elements with a daring approach to production makes for one of the most unique records you're likely to hear all year.

Review: Absolute DJ pleasure... Most Excellent take a break from their buy-on-sight Krivit edit series with this beautiful collection of groove tools that will bring rhythmic, loopy magic to any mix in any dancefloor style. Intricate and refined enough to vibe to as stand-alone tunes, but best when places in the heat of a mix we range from lean percussive hypnosis such as Phil Moffa's "Kings & Queens" and Photay's "J Tain Squeak Break" to gutsy soul persistence like Justin Van Der Volgen's "High In NYC". Those looking for total gospel immersion should jump on Devin Dare's "WatCanUDo4Me" while those in need something grittier and more machine-funk need to be acquainted with Non Stop's "Whatever / Whatever" and Jex Opolis's "CR78 Sharing" stat!

Review: After releases on Goodgroove and Riddim Fruit, The Allergies, aka Bristol nu-funk duo DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat, found a welcome home in Jalapeno for their debut album, As We Do Our Thing, which was released earlier this year. Vinyl fans sore at the lack of the album in their preferred format will find consolation in the fact two gleaming highlights now feature on this 45 for Jalapeno. Up top, the smart soul sampling and tight breakbeat patterns of "Love's Supposed To Be" represent all that is good about the party-starting style of The Allergies, whilst "As We Do Our Thing" is a more midtempo horn funker.

Review: Cinthie's Berlin Based house imprint returns with a new EP entitled Beste Modus 07, featuring tracks from the label boss and former Stattbad resident herself on the A side. There is the early '90s Jersey sound of "Back To Garage" then the equally stateside sounding throwback sounds of "Hold'em". On the flip, label co-founder stevn.aint.leavn. serves up the soulful and emotive boompty business of "Isn't It" and the raw and jackin' stomp of "Sub Marino": a fine DJ tool closing out this nice EP in style. Fresh from a strong January release, the Beste Modus crew look set to take 2017 by storm, this time with a versatile record that yet again raises the bar within the contemporary house scene.
