  1. Russian Woodpecker (6:09)
  2. Repeater (5:41)
  3. How To Ruin The World (5:16)
  4. Lone Star (6:02)
Review: Following well-regarded outings on Banoffee Pies and Linoli Industries, FYI Chris returns to the loving arms of Rhythm Section International, and its 'Executive Producer' Bradley Zero. He's in fine form, too, delivering a quartet of tracks that largely steer clear of predictable deep house tropes. Check, for example, the curious - but rather good - "Russian Woodpecker", where spacey synth hits and Scanner style mobile field recordings join forces with a jumpy bassline and off-kilter rhuthm track. The loose and dreamy "Repeater" adds a little dub-wise flavour to a loose and lo-fi, MPC head's take on dream house, while "How To Ruin The World" is an undeniably melancholic journey that's as melodious as it as lo-fi. Closer "Lone Star", meanwhile, is a stripped back groove joint of the highest calibre.

Review: Flying Lotus collaborator Thundercat returns to Brainfeeder with his first full album since 2013's superb Apocalypse. Presented over four coloured pieces of 10" vinyl, Drunk is a thrill-a-minute, mix-tape style trip through the multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker's various inspirations (think skewed hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, left-of-centre electronica, and so on), all of which have been fused and mutated to fit his unique musical perspective. His high standing within the leffield hip-hop community has allowed Thundercat to snag some impressive guest stars, too, including Kendrick Lamarr, blue-eyed soul legend Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Pharell and jazz man Kamasi Washington. Old pal Fly-Lo also lends a hand.

Review: Highly respected Frenchman Alexandre Gouyette makes his debut on Berlin institution Cabinet Records with two perfectly contrasting grooves: "Soothing" naturally lives up to its name with soft focus dubby synth ripples and a classic drum arrangement while "Visions" rolls and punches like a Kenny Dope beats track. Broken, spacious, dubbed-out and physical, Brawther's reputation for rough finesse is so strong you can properly feel it.

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

Review: Chiwax wlecomes DJ Haus aka Rupert Cogan (the hardest working man in show business!) head of Uttu & Hot Haus Records. He teams up with Mak & Pasteman here on this killer 12'. He's released already on the respected Clone Jack for Daze series, Creme Organization and of course his own imprints to name a few. The new three tracker comes around in good Dance Mania style. Chicago House meets UK Garage. On the A side is the early rave of "X-Mod" reflecting a love of all things early Plus 8, while on the flip "Bang It" continues on with some Relief Records style Chicago hard house shenanigans the the relentless jack-attach-drum-track that is "Drive MF".

Review: It's been a quiet year for Kai Alce, but finally the Atlanta house hero returns with a new pair of tracks that will surely satisfy any fans of his instinctive, expressive take on club-ready deep house. This latest drop comes on Sounds Of The City, which has also supported the likes of Walt J and Brian Harden. "Just Wanna" is a sure and steady workout peppered with woozy chords and a nagging vocal lick, but "Movin Thru" is surely the record's stand-out moment. With just the right balance between the edgy chords and the rounded bassline, it's a simple cocktail that plays to Alce's strengths perfectly.

Review: Absolute classic from the Blaze camp, this has never been repressed officially since its initial release in 93. Those clipped reedy synths, the nagging looping vocal on the chorus and sweet honeyed soul of Roger Harris, soul seeps off every hook, nook and shuffle. "Blaze Theme Track" set the benchmark: jazzy, dubby and oh-so-funk with its soft live bass keys jamming away with a life of their own. 24 years old and still untouchable.

  1. DJ Boring - "Winona" (8:35)
  2. Magma - "You" (6:22)
Review: The E-Beamz label recently debuted with a fine 12" of jungle-influenced haziness from Tim Shug and DJ Playstation. Here, they swiftly move on to EP number two, showcasing tracks from debutants DJ Boring and Magma. The former's A-side cut, "Winona" - so called because it utilizes vocal samples from an interview with actress Winona Ryder - sounds like a long-lost early '90s cut: an ultra-deep treat full of deep space chords, analogue deep house beats and psychedelic TB-303 abuse. Magma's dustier flipside cut, "You", explores similar old skool pastures, making use of both barnstorming techno drums and sweaty jungle breaks. Throw in ridiculously deep chords and riffs, and some eyes-closed vocal samples, and you have another late night winner.

Review: The history of dance music is littered with one-hit wonders. The mysterious Sahara-Ja, whose one and only 12" appeared on Australian label Central Station back in 1989, is a perfect example. Since slipping out in limited quantities 18 years ago, the Egyptian Lover-does-'80s soul cut "I'm An Arabian Knight" has become something of an in-demand record amongst collectors. This timely reissue contains all four versions included on the original '89 release, including a tasty instrumental and the must-heavy Funky Arabian Mix. This sublime version puts more emphasis on the producer's killer electro rhythm, dreamy chords, and cascading, Persian style synthesizer melodies.

Review: The latest 12" from long-running Sahko offshoot Keys Of Life is the first of two split 'Balearic' releases from Sex Tags man DJ Sotofett and SUED co-founder SVN.. Sotofett's "Current 82" is a thing of rare beauty; an ambient house inspired chunk of lucid, mid-tempo dreaminess full of fluid chords, subtle, loved-up melodies and early Italian deep house bottom end. SVN continue the deep theme whilst doffing a cap to techno on flipside "Dark Plan 5". Their chords and pads are every bit as life-affirming as Sotofett's - even if they are a touch on the bittersweet side - but the accompanying up-tempo rhythm has a more ready-made dancefloor feel. Either way, both tracks are superb.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Through the years, he's appeared under the names Black Soyls, Madball Scientists, Mankoora and Rengades Of Jazz, among many others. Dem Juju Poets is his latest creation and, needless to say, it is perhaps his most accomplished and mature project to date. We don't want to take anything away from his previous productions but there's just something utterly fluid about this latest reincarnation. Matasuna is the new label to launch this new Liberated Thoughts LP, and we're sure this will go down a storm with all the jazz-funk crew, particularly the followers of Giles Peterson's DJ sound. Hanke's approach is playful and diverse, branching out into all sorts of jazzy vibrations that are tied together by funky, off-kilter outernational vibes. Plenty of breaks, bass bumps, and party moves for all sorts of vinyl playaz - oh boy, check those horns on the masterful "People's Republic"!

Review: Rewind to 2014: Mr Bird and Greg Blackman released an immaculate LP on BBE. As well received as it was, however, it didn't get the vinyl justice it deserves. Until now... "Where Did The Party Go?", one of the albums many highlights, gets a limited pressing with two beautiful updates from the don Beedle. Really relishing Greg's falsettos and the swooning horns, Ashley seduces us with his slow and low North Street remix then casually undresses us with raw organ and percussion on the stripped back remix. Smouldering.

The fire fanned by flamenco strums and layers of both percussive and cosmic textures, it's another glistening gem from Church and Spencer. Review: This is big: a collaboration between Balearic nu-disco heavyweight Pete Herbert and "the voice of house" himself, Robert Owens. In its original form, "Pass Me By" is bubbly and attractive, with Owens' adding deep, soulful and emotion-rich vocals to a sparkling, synth-heavy backing track that effortlessly joins the dots between freestyle, proto-house and Italo-disco. The equally impressive remix package is headed up by a fine rework from Daniele Baldelli and DJ Rocca: a chugging, undulating cosmic disco revision that's surprisingly more organic in feel. Elsewhere, Aussie adventurer Dr Packer gives it an electrofunk flavoured house makeover and Pete Herbert turns in a fluid, Balearic-inspired rework full of heady synth lines and tumbling pianos.

With Billy Love's sumptuous vocals to the fore, there's much to enjoy throughout - not least the organic, undulating, live deep house warmth of sublime opener "It's The Life". Theo Parrish's Sound Signature Remix of "Illumination" - ultra-deep, jazzy, spaced-out and hypnotic - remains one of the Detroit producer's greatest reworks. On the flip, beatdown pioneer Norm Talley takes on remix duties to deliver two contrasting versions of "Fly Away". There's the sparse, jazzy and intricately programmed West End Blue Mix, and the slightly smoother West End Lounge Mix, where Love's immaculate vocals take centre stage.

Review: The name Francisco Tenorio Cerqueira Junior, or simply Tenorio Jr, has always been clouded in mystery. Not only did the renowned Brazilian pianist pass away under dubious circumstances in Argentina back in 1976, but he also put out a surprisingly limited number of albums throughout his short-lived career. Having said that, these are all very valid reasons for why his music remains among the most coveted of items in the jazz scene. Embalo is his only album under the Tenorio Jr name, but its 1964 release is still as fresh today as it was back in a cloud of psych-driven hedonism that permeated all arts scenes back then. Fun and uplifting throughout, the album will satisfy both the jazz traditionalists and those with a slightly more left field taste. The percussion driving the arrangements isn't exactly something to ignore either, with its typical South American flair infusing sublimely into Tenorio's own excellence behind the keyboard. This is an important album which has helped to define a whole generation of later Brazilian musicians, and we recommend you to make it part of your life. It's an essential piece of history.

Review: Thus far Lost City Of Atlantis has been spotted on just one 12", released on Emotions Electric two years ago and supposedly the handiwork of a producer active in the late 80s between New York and Detroit. Whether the providence is correct or not hardly matters, the most important thing is the quality of the tunes, and on this new release for Slow Town there's an abundance of hardware delights to get freaky to. "Secret Code Of 7" is a particularly bugging synth jam, while "Four" piles the swinging funk on heavy. This is certainly rough and ready house music, whenever and wherever it was made.

Review: Frankfurt innovator Rajko Muller returns as Isolee, working his magic this time for The Drifter's rather impressive Maeve imprint which in recent times has brought us fantastic work by Ed Davenport, Baikal and Ripperton. "Pisco" is a slow burning groove with phased marimbas that cause a hypnotic dream state, while "L5 Syndrome" dives deeper: this smooth and introverted trip is definitely suited to the early night as it is to the afterhours and reminds us of his earlier seminal works in the nineties, on labels like Playhouse. Finally, the title track is where Muller saves the best for last; this dubby, lo-slung groove is drenched in delayed and reverberated aesthetics.

The former is a dense weave of horn samples and well-known vocal hooks over some deliciously swashbuckling beats while the latter is a sweatier funk groove that's reminiscent of the classier end of big beat's golden era but with more original funk spirit. Techno
  1. Accidents & Romance (6:39)
  2. Country Life (5:57)
  3. Private Death (4:14)
Review: Oliver Ho's Broken English Club has been a revelation of sorts since his first release appeared on Jealous God back in 2014. What's particularly impressive about this artist is how he successfully managed to align himself with all the right labels; all the right labels for his particular form of techno, including Cititrax, a label we have much love for. The man returns to Regis' and Silent Servant's Jealous God for the label's sixteenth instalment, and "Accidents & Romance" kicks the EP off with a familiarly rolling bassline that hints at the emergence of 303 tones without ever unleashing a full blockade of acid. On the B-side, "Country Life" enters the realm of nightmares thanks to sharp, bruising bass stabs and an ominous swarm of voices, leaving the foreboding elements of "Private Death" to linger in their own pool of broken drum patters and percussion shots. This is a keeper, and probably one of the best JG missiles yet!

Review: Long serving producer Retrogott (AKA German studio boffin Kurt Tallert) is no newcomer to the Ava label, having made his first appearance on the imprint a couple of years back. Like that EP, Funky Beats & A Supersonic Turbojet offers a range of tracks that effortlessly join the dots between loose, organic house and a variety of tasty old school influences. Across the five cuts, you'll hear party-starting boogie/hip-hop/house fusion ("We Do It Right"), bouncy, ska-influenced blues-house ("Something Serious"), GAMM style cut-up disco business ("In Your Hands", "Linie 6"), and even a dash of languid, jazz-funk fuelled house dustiness ("Like This"). In other words, it's a fine collection of DJ-friendly workouts.

Review: Naples duo Whodamanny and Milord are anything but normal. Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Throw in unabashed bumpers like the acid tweaked "Momentum" and you've got the perfect soundtrack to an entire party from warm-up to sesh, club to beach.

Review: More seminal material by the legendary Spencer Kincy aka Gemini up for grabs once again courtesy of the newly created Another Day imprint out of London. As before, this release has been licensed directly from the man himself, so unlike some other reissues out there, the money made from its exploitation will go directly to him. Originally released in 1995 on Curtis Jones' Cajual Recordings, this one has been a favorite among those in the know for sometime. Starting off with the woozy Afro house of "Untitled I", the wicked jack of "Untitled II" is probably more familiar to most others as the Gemini sound. On the flip, "Untitled III" is a raw and stripped back drum track/DJ tool.

Review: Last autumn, Andrea La Pietra impressed with a debut double-pack on Melliflow that variously doffed a cap to Detroit futurism, jack-tracks, off-kilter electro and deep techno. Unsurprisingly, this follow-up EP boasts a similar amount of dancefloor eclecticism. After beginning with the bleeps, wobble bass and funk-fuelled tech-house beats of "Theoretically", he variously doffs a cap to classic Swag material (the undulating machine funk of "Dream Catcher", deep and woozy house ("Random Continuity"), and UK garage-influenced electro (the sub-heavy, funk-fuelled surge of "Into A Liquid Broken Place"). Happily, it all sounds club ready, with the latter track sounding like a late night anthem in the making.

Review: A mere four years after making his 12" debut on Fathers & Sons Productions, Samuel Andre Madsen delivers his debut album on Delaphine, the label he set up to release his music back in 2013. There's much to admire about Dream State of A Bellmaker, which attractively drifts between undulating ambient bliss, deep and melodious techno shufflers, evocative electronica, becalmed drone explorations, and atmospheric compositions that define easy categorization (see the electronic jazz/ambient/dream house fusion of "Better To Have Loved"). It's a hugely enjoyable and entertaining set, full of intricately programmed and life-affirming music.

Review: Sleepers has been a little vague about the identity of the producer behind the Cool & Frank project, though it appears to be a newcomer from New York. Interestingly, the music on Golden Wall sounds vintage, as if it was recorded in the mid 1990s as a response to intelligent techno and "braindance" style releases. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the Ceephax Acid Crew style madness of "When 4 Ravers Come Crashing" and spacey, IDM-acid of "Golden Wall", to the intergalactic electro shuffle of "Bergone" and Polygon Window-era Richard D James loveliness of "Pipe Pope Grape". As debut 12" singles go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: House Plants Records is a French based label spreading lovely music around the world. Releases are available in vinyl and cassette by the likes of Nerea, DJ Longdick, Monodominical and Ayrton H. Botanic House Vol 1: Arecaceae is a lo-fi house affair which features Underground City Loop with the sunny classic house of "Mission Beach", Australia's Silentspook with the gritty percolator jack of "Organic Matter" and British producer Jon Chmielewski aka Zobol with the saturated vintage electro of "Metabolic Rift" awash in as much tape compression hiss as you like. More meme house for the heads!

Review: The Bulgarian don returns to DGTL with two originals and four cool creative tools for our pleasure. "Dynamo" has an air of Bodzin about it thanks to the strident trance-like uplift and restrained momentum that builds on its own euphoric terms. "Neutrino" is the complete switch; a gnarly and alarming piece of techno that relentlessly twists, morphs and when the sweeping bass comes in, takes you to places you didn't know existed. Precision as always from Kink.

Review: Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape has some serious pulling-power these days. Having already released material from Dirtytwo, Mr V, Loz Goddard, Kraak & Smaak and Fouk, the New York imprint has managed to score an EP from Mister Saturday Night regular Nebraska. Predictably, it's a party-starting affair from start to finish. Bouncy, horn-heavy disco-house A-side "Drill Deep" - a weighty chunk of unashamed peak-time goodness - leads the way, with beatdown-tempo shuffler "Keep On Keeping On" snapping at its heels. This bubbles along tenderly via swirling disco orchestration, before bursting into life midway through thanks to the introduction of a sublime female vocal. "Instant Pressure", a chunkier, dub-flecked fusion of dewy-eyed soul and low-slung acid bass, is also superb.
