Review: Having spent much of 2016 focusing on the 20th anniversary of his impressive Freerange label, Jamie "Jimpster" Odell returns with his long-awaited sixth full-length, his first album since 2013's much admired Porchlight & Rocking Chairs. As you might expect, Silent Stars is a musically expansive affair, with the producer's usual floor-friendly deep house workouts being accompanied by tracks that pay homage to starry jazz-funk (brilliant opener "Migrations"), synthesizer-heavy new age ambient (the wonderful "Sylvanshine"), loose and languid Balearica (Jinadau collaboration "The Sun Comes Up"), Floating Points Ensemble style jazz ("Tau Tona"), modern soul ("Everytime") and even a touch of Osunlade style tribal bounce ("Silent Stars"). In other words, it's superb.

  3. Long Night Ahead (7:15)
  4. Pajama Stomp (6:36)
Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Review: Born and raised in Eastern Siberia, Pavel Iudin found his way to the underground scenes of Moscow and Saint Petersburg where he firmly established his credentials. With previous releases on Arjunadeep, Treibstoff and Cyclic, the Probe EP marks his second release for Hamburg tech house institution Poker Flat. Starting off this fine release with the deeply sublime dub techno excursion "Probe 2" and the slinky main room tech house of "Halo" which is sure to make you sweat! On the flip we have a rolling and hypnotic groove in the form of "Groundlevel" which calls to mind the in vogue style of iO Mulen.

Review: After the impressive scope of the first volume of Dysphoria |Euphoria, Ka-One and St-Sene have returned to their Flyance label with a second installment that goes even deeper into adventurous electronic pastures. There's a cinematic quality to the original productions that make up the first disc of Chapter Two, using mournful melodic refrains and a widescreen approach to production that draws the listener in to their emotive electro and techno world. In terms of remixers on the second disc, they haven't held back as AWB, Setaoc Mass, Luke Hess and Anetha all provide a more propulsive, club ready perspective on these thoughtfully crafted electronic gems.

Review: John and Alice Coltrane's Cosmic Music has long been considered one of spiritual jazz's greatest moments. The album was recorded in 1966 and '68, features amongst its backing players the mighty Pharoah Saunders, and was initially released as an ultra-limited "private press" record by Alice Coltrane following her husband's death. It was, of course, later brought to wider attention by an official Impulse Records release, though this reissue boasts Alice Coltrane's original private press artwork. Variously out-there, discordant, effervescent and hugely atmospheric, tracks like "Lord Help Me To Be" and "Rev. King" still sound groundbreaking and mind-altering all these years on.

  4. Sameed - "Someone Like U" (6:43)
Review: Sample-based, hip-hop influenced house label Ele returns with a second missive. This time round, there's a trio of artists at the controls, namely Manchester man Contours, GAMM and Local Talk regular Sameed, and the previously unheard Replete. The latter's "Legislate", a loose, languid, jazz-flecked chunk of sunshine deep house warmth featuring the suave vocals of Bini, is arguably the EP's standout moment - though it is pushed all the way by the crunchy drums, meandering electric piano solos and head-in-the-clouds dustiness of Sameed's "Someone Like U". The breezy, synth-heavy Balearic house breeziness of Contours' "Night Shift" and the drowsy, cut-up house thrust of "Rush", created by a producer who wishes to remain nameless, complete a fine package.

Review: As an ode to the upcoming remake of David Lynch's infamous Twin Peaks, there is a flurry of Angelo Badalamenti reissues at the moment. In fact, both this original soundtrack, which is the official music as heard in the 1992 film, and the Fire Walk With Me spin-off have both resurfaced as reissues this week. Unsurprisingly, we recommend for you to snap up both because they have been something of a rarity over the last 10 years. Timeless and iconic from start to finish, this soundtrack is not for the faint of heart, and will likely stir some feelings upon initial listen. This will be all the more palpable if you were shocked and eternally intrigued by the movie. We were, of course, and we absolutely cannot wait for the new series either!

Review: While many avid Mulatu fans will no doubt already own a copy of the master's first - and perhaps most ingenious - work from 1972, one can certainly rely on the mighty Strut to put together a fine reissue. Of note, unlike the many versions which have been retrained by Worthy Records over the years, this new take includes many little extras that are special enough to tempt even the most munitioned Mulatu collectors; aside from seven tracks from Mulatu Of Ethiopia, an utterly inimitable psychedelic jazz journey that defined Ethiopia's entire sound in relation to the genre, this new version includes a whole selection of previously unheard cuts. There are mono album mixes of all the original tunes plus a wide selection of 'takes' from the original recording session, so this LP should have no problem in working up a bit of hype and hysteria from the original-pressing-junkies. This is an essential, highly recommended!

Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

Kon plays the lavish extension card, adding extra emphasis on the instrumentation while The Reflex goes for a warmer finish, squaring his focus on the juicy bassline while adding a little cymbal magic to the rhythm. Both authentic and hugely respectful to the original, this is effectively an edit masterclass that we all need to pay attention to.

Paolo Modugno's Brise D'Automne originally came out in 1988 and has since been highly coveted by record collectors fascinated with the new age delights contained within. Archeo have gone all out for this reissue, pressing the album on heavy vinyl to allow the music to really breathe, and adding a second disc with two tracks previously unavailable on vinyl. The curious fusion of organic and electronic elements with a daring approach to production makes for one of the most unique records you're likely to hear all year.

Review: Ever reliable Canadian producer Fred Everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the Lazy Days label. On the A-side he's taking to Crazy P's "Like A Fool" a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original's warm, disco-infused elements. On the flip, he takes on Roach Motel's "The Night" and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. By way of variety the final track sees Fred create a laid back Balearic, auto-tuned version of Franky Selector's "Wind Swept Dune".

Where the original is loose and prone to steamy Latin string histrionics, Al's edits restrain the emotion a little and let it leaks out much more gradually over an enticing weave of percussion. Whether it's the vocal or dub version, both are guaranteed to take your floor to new places.

On Phases II we get some terrific remixes courtesy of Sicilian hi-tech soul merchant Toto Chiavetta: whose evocative "Colour Zero" remix takes you deep into the stratosphere, while the "Color Two" remix injects a bit more energy into into it. 3. Convenience Trap (part 3) (5:31)
  4. Convenience Trap (part 4) (5:45)
Review: Since 2015, Surgeon has been performing live improvised techno using hardware machines. It has been a gradual process of evolution over the past 25 years that he's been performing to a point where he says 'it really can't be called DJing anymore.' He's taken the techniques and inspiration from this live creative process and distilled them into these four tracks. "Part 1" is the EP at its most hypnotic and atmospheric but still retains Child's trademark blend of cyclical grit beneath. "Part 3" is without a doubt the EP's most intense moment on this pounding and loopy tool that's built for some strobed out and tunnelling moments on the dancefloor. Also on the flip "Part 4" shows his knack for making broken techno: another speciality honed throughout his career (and with Regis as British Murder Boys): this one is a bold and fierce body basher.

  1. Systema Naturae (4:28)
  2. Make Me Prada (6:42)
  3. Athina (5:03)
  4. Syriacid (5:22)
Review: Asa Moto duo Oliver Geerts and Gilles Noe impressed with last year's debut EP, the double A-side synth-pop delight that was "Stay Awake/Wanowan Efem". This follow-up for DeeWee, co-produced by label founders (and Soul Wax members) David and Stephen Dewaele, is every bit as impressive, even if its four tracks draw on a much wider palette of influences. Opener "System Naturae" wraps sharp, rave type stabs around a jaunty drum machine groove, deep melody flourishes and warped analogue bass, while "Make Me Prada" is an exercise in alien funk/ambient/synth-pop fusion. On the flip you'll find the bleep-laden analogue house thrust of "Athina", while closer "Syriacid" is a sweaty jog through acid-fired deep house pastures with wayward pop overtones.

  1. Track 1 (10:02)
  2. Track 2 (9:33)
Review: The people behind the Yoyaku studio, record store and stable of labels really don't like giving too much away. Their occasional Hostom series, which launched back in 2015, sticks rigidly to their principle of never naming the producers behind their 12" releases. Interestingly, what's on offer here is warmer, richer, looser and more positive than many of the Parisian organisation's releases. A-side "Track 1" boasts elongated chords and bustling synth melodies rising above a chunky, swinging, pleasingly fluid drum machine groove. It has dancefloor weight, but also a thrillingly loved-up vibe. Flipside "Track 2" has a slightly more low-slung, bass-heavy feel, but retains the attractive tunefulness present on the A-side. Balearic tech-house anyone?

  1. Icon (Vince Watson remix & reconstruction) (9:49)
  2. Kao-Tic Harmony (Vince Watson remix & reconstruction) (9:36)
Review: Vince Watson is arguably one of a handful of European producers whose approach to techno matches the original ethos of the sound's Detroit pioneers. It's probably for this reason that Derrick May asked him to "remix and remodel" two timeless Rhythim Is Rhythim classics. Pleasingly, Watson's versions of 1991's "Icon" and "Kao-Tic Harmony" (the latter an early collaboration between May and Carl Craig) are both superb, getting just the right balance between respecting the original versions whilst bringing something new to the party. While the evocative, string-drenched version of "Icon" is superb, it is the fizzing, sci-fi fuelled melodiousness of Watson's "Kao-Tic Harmony" revision that really hits home hard. Naturally, both versions sound like breezy Motor City classics.

  4. Real Thing (6:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Groovepressure is back by popular demand after a 13 year hiatus and kicking things off with re-releases and new productions from the original Groovepressure artists. Taking influence from original UK techouse and techbreaks, Detroit techno, Chicago House, electro, deep house and 90's electronica, Groovepressure is about keeping these influences fresh whilst looking towards the future. Releases will include new music plus re-masters and remixes of sought-after Groove Pressure classics. Groovepressure came from the underground and had support from legends like Laurent Garnier and Andrew Weatherall with recent support from the newer school including Onur Ozer and Raresh. A² (aka Andy Panayi and Alec Stone) are London bred artists who originally appeared on Groovepressure in 2001. Their tracks will form the first comeback release on Groovepressure. "No Mistake" and "Rebirth" are both re-mastered Groovepressure classics in their own unique tech-breaks style whilst "A² Groove" and "Real Thing" are new releases taken from the vaults and keeping the same vibe.

Review: Announcing the 25 year anniversary vinyl only edition of the legendary Mihon. It apparently all happened back in Frankfurt, 1992 when Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart teamed up with other local legends such as Ata Macias (Robert Johnson) and Heiko MSO (aka Heiko Schafer of Playhouse) and local hard techno purveyor W.J. Henze as Ongaku to produce one of techno's holy grails. Especially "Mihon 3" which is known by many as one the best acid tracks that was ever produced.

Alluring, cosmic and layered with distinctive instrumentation, we're treated to range of dynamics from the hypnotic rhythm pulse of "Theka Pyar Wala" and "Teri Gut Ne Kacheri" to the more introspective finale "Jhoothe Tere Maan". Review: Romanian minimal techno don Teo Bajdechi aka Sepp returns and delivers the goods once again, this time for Curtea Veche, who have previously served up great releases featuring local Heroes Egal 3 aka Vid, Herck and Ukraine's KiRiK. Starting off on the A side with the incredible "Dugul Pamantului" Which features all the trademarks of the master producer's sound: cavernous/rolling bass, deeply hypnotic polyrhythms and layers of the most esoteric samples that all together will have you zoning out seriously on the dancefloor. On the flip, he proves he's just as good at creating microhouse grooves like on the reductionist hi-tech shenanigans of "Zorilor Roze".

  3. All My Love Is Free (7:00)
  4. Guide To Action (5:03)
Review: If the melodious, deep and dreamy breakbeat/analogue house fusions showcased on Guide To Action sound like the work of noted Canadian producer Project Pablo, it's with good reason. He co-produced the EP alongside old friend Francis Latreille, jamming out melodies, beats and chord progressions with the help of an MPC, Moog Source, and a bunch of old synthesizers. The result is an EP of rare positivity. Check, for example, the loved-up goodness of "Crusade Mix", the Raze-does-Mood Hut dreaminess of "All My Love Is Free", and the punchy breaks, winding synth solos and stretched-out pads of blissful opener "Empathy Mix". Those heading for deep space should also cop the hazy, dubbed-out, ambient-informed Balearica of closer "Guide To Action".

Review: While we'd like to think that SPY Edits is the work of a party-loving CIA field agent, it's actually the work of some experienced producers and re-editors. Both tracks here sound like surefire party-starters; the kind of cuts you sling on the decks to really get the dancers fired up in the closing stages of a particularly sweaty session. On the A-side, the mysterious scalpel fiends deliver a subtly dubbed-out, stripped back deep house interpretation of well-known jazz classic "Fever", wrapping the sultry vocal and famous bassline around a delay-laden groove. On the B-side you'll find "Diamonds", a tastefully tooled-up version of a 1986 fave previously reworked by Todd Terje during his Tangoterje re-edit phase.

Review: Passing fashions for jerky post-punk and effervescent dance-pop have elevated this confusingly monikered outfit to hot topic status over the years, but !!! have maintained their own identity throughout. Tapping into a lineage of New York party music that touches on Ze records and Studio 54 whilst also embuing their sound with a punk rock vim and vigour straight from CBGBs, 'Shake The Shudder' might be the most timeless collection of suss, sway and swagger these freaks have put together in their 21 (!) years of filling dancefloors. Chk (chk chk) it out.

Review: SMBD aka Simbad is back on GAMM again after a longer break and said to be planning a few EPs with seasonal themes for the label. The first EP as you might expect delivers three tasteful season influenced reworks and remixes which the label claims will 'be your perfect DJ weapons over the Summer months.' If the Afro broken beat groove of Bootsy's "Rather Be With You" (Alphabets Heaven X SMBD remix) won't do it for you, or the super soulful Colonel Abrams tribute "Table 42" (SMBD Tribute) does not grab your attention, guaranteed that the stunning 4/4 rework with Mike Lowrey of Jazzy Jeff's Summer classic "Summertime" has the potential to be a huge tune in the coming months.
