  1. Sullric (10:05)
  2. Sullric (Deeper dub) (12:09)
Review: In what is surely an unexpected collaboration in the field of house and techno, Mosaic mastermind Steve O'Sullivan teams up with Ricardo Villalobos for a hypnotic trip through minimal landscapes that plays to both of their strengths. The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Of such ingredients are classy, immersive techno joints made.

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Review: One half of the Canyons, Leo James first presented his solo artistry in 2015 on his own Body Language. 18 months and four EPs deep, his landscapes are becoming more and more vivid and alluring, notably now on the ever-innovative Berceuse Heroique. Unhurried and gossamer in its synthetic sheen, there's a strong sense of science and futurism coded into these wonderfully extensive narratives as the ominous plod and clipped riff uplift of "The Surface", the oceanic epicity of "The Centre Of Time" and the playful thrust of the title track fuse to form almost 40 minutes of immersive electronic soul.

  3. Lost In Time (7:39)
Review: John Mateo and Eddie Matos, the duo first appeared back in the early 90s under the Raw Elements alias, have both been involved in a significant number of projects over the years; 2 Trax, Division 1, House Faze and Mateo & Matos are just some of the monikers they've used, and it's no wonder they've been so successful given just how future-proof their strain of house music is. Flash Forward, the nifty Italian reissue stable, drops their debut EP from 1992, the timelessly sublime Raw Basics, a powerful three-tracker that cannot be improved on by any new form of house. The title tune, "Raw Elements", carries a painfully addictive groove with only subtle nods to the 'soulful' sound, and it's just one of those chunky bangers that will please any dancefloor goer. On the flip things are equally delightful, with "Deep Inside" offering a dubbier shade of 4/4, charged by ethereal synths and heartical percussion, while "Lost In Time" bangs out a garage-friendly house blast with all sorts of watery influences coming through. If you're looking for THE House EP to churn out this summer then you've struck gold.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: Mystery moves once more from Outerzona13 collective: With our anonymous pilots at the controls we glide from one gilded soul classic looped and layered for maximum groove affect ("Now That I Got It") to a shimmering funk standard that shakes with a subtle sense of Balearic sandy-toed soul. But there's turbulence en route; "Slight Delay Theme" plays the perfect foil with its Chicago warehouse-smashing machine funk and raw visceral groove. The mystery continues...

Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

Review: Adam Beyer teams up with Pig & Dan on the new Capsule EP and they sure aren't messing around. The Drumcode boss knew he could call upon his label stalwarts for EP packed full of main room power tools with the peak time in mind. The adrenalised, forceful stomp and grind of the title track gets things off to a good start, while the druggy and head rush inducing muscle of "In Love" is bound for some real hands in the air moments. On the flip "We Are E" leaves little to the imagination on this heady and bass driven trip through the early hours of a heaving stadium dancefloor... where things are starting to get real weird. Then those ravey church organs come in and it starts getting right crazy!

Review:

What can be said about Kerri Chandler that hasn't already been said? The man is one of the greats of contemporary House music, a true legend & one of the most hard working & consistent producers out there today... "Trionisphere", his (second) LP from 2003 has it all, those gritty drums, the deep Garage groove, the church feeling that influences so much of his sound & those bass-lines that he's renowned for are all here, not forgetting the outstanding vocal performances from his long-time collaborator Dee Dee Brave amongst a cast of other guests.

The sounds on the LP are wide ranging, from the uplifting Latin swing of "Ye Yo Ma (Mother)" to the sparse, pacey, heads down House of "It's You" we're treated to a glimpse into Mr.Chandler's sound world across 2 x 12"s & we all know that can only be a good thing! "Trionisphere" has always been a fond favourite with House aficionados around the world & hasn't been available for a little while... Until now!

Fully re-mastered, re-pressed & re-released in conjunction with King Street Sounds, NYC & made available again for 2015 in it's original format with the permission & participation of all rights holders. Now's your chance to own a piece of NY/NJ House history! Essential...

Review: It's been well over a decade since Pete Herbert last released an album. On that occasion, he was collaborating with Phil Mison, as Frontera. This tine round, Herbert has been joined in the studio by keyboard wizard Martin Denev. Made in the Shade naturally encapsulates all that's good about both producers' work - think colourful synthesizers, loved-up pianos, dreamy chords, rich analogue synth-bass, Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, disco cowbells and an saucer-eyed Balearic mindset - while delivering a string of superb, sun-fired tracks. Highlights come thick and fast, from the classic Italo-house surge of "Washed Up" and T-Coy-does-nu-disco cheeriness of "Night Boat", to the soul-flecked tingle of Robert Owens hook-up "Pass Me By" and groovy, acid-flecked deepness of proto-house shuffler "Time".

Review: Unsurprisingly, Above Smoke has long been closely associated with his brother Dubbyman's Deep Explorer label, and so it figures that the Spanish artist is releasing his debut album close to home. For those unfamiliar with the sound of Deep Explorer, think of the warmest, soul-inflected deep house rich with natural instrumentation as much as electronic elements and you should have an idea. On the album format Above Smoke has space to branch out into some refined neo soul excursions such as "Don't Stop (Till The Morning)" featuring Kikone's stirring vocal, but as ever it's the exemplary house music that truly defines this album.

A homage to the coal miner with strong clear lyrics and vibrant horns, the original was one of many breakthrough's BB made in the 50s. It was also futureproofed for Belgium's popcorn sound with a bold brass version that's loaded with so much swing you almost forget its deep deep blues. Records like this are what 45s are made for.

Flipping the arrangement so each section gets a chance to shine (notably the raffish walking bassline and sweeping strings) the lead remix pays full respect to the original while giving it a completely fresh new life. Complete with the extended original for the more purest fans, KON's delivered gold once again.

Review: While Ron Trent has always tended towards the prolific, his recent release schedule has been particularly jam-packed. African Indigenous Rhythms is his second 12" single of 2017, and contains two sparkling, spacey deep house cuts blessed with subtle Afro influences. We think the real killer is "Power Movement", where the legendary Chicagoan douses a shape-shifting, Afro-influenced rhythm with intergalactic electronics, bubbly motifs, a deliciously jaunty synth bassline, and some seriously woozy vocal harmonies. That said, A-side "The Dawn" is fantastic too, with Trent's gradually increasing the intensity throughout via energy-packed drum machine fills, cascading piano motifs, and darting synth solos.

On the A side "Hot Pants" is an edit of the original track and the "dub beats version" (found only on the Urban release in 1988) starts with the drum break. Review: The third volume in Suction Records' series of EPs featuring previously unheard late '90s productions from Dutch artist RX 101 is a thrillingly raw and wild affair. Mostly made up of tracks created using Roland's iconic SH-101 mono-synth and TB-303 bass synthesizer, it's chock full of cuts that pair razor-sharp electro beats, distorted drum hits and psychedelic acid lines. Of course, there are a few different excursions dotted throughout - see the metronomic, mid-tempo, acid techno hum of "Clinch" and ragged braindance madness of "Neuralgia", not to mention slow acid-funk wiggler "Sys.rx.3.a06" - but these feel like variations on a theme, rather than pleasant surprises. Regardless, it's an impressively forthright and exciting EP.

Review: ** Repress of the Ethereal Sound classic! **It's time for another dose of mystical deep house vibes on the renowned Ethereal Sound. Their mini compilations are always eagerly awaited here at Juno HQ, and this time they showcase the talent of NY house wizard Fred P and Ukraine's main man, Vakula. Fred P's tracks are always a pleasure to listen to and "It's All In The Mind" reaffirms his talents as one of deep house's finest. The beat opens with an unusually punchy acid sound for Mr.P but soon dissolves and melts into something much more sparse and disconnected. New man Pjotr takes the helms on "Waves From The Past" and opens with a stunning chord shadowing a distant sample of a jazz gig which weaves and moulds its way through to the end. On the flip, Vakula drops an intricate percussion filled with bongos and subtle basslines like only he knows how to do best, while Benedikt Frey ties thing up in true Ethereal style on "Untitled 3", creating a stylish atmosphere and serves as a welcome addition to their already impressive artist catalogue.

Review: Eric Cloutier launched Palinoia last year with a single of his own, but now he's turned to Berlin mainstays Exercise One to lay down some of their trademark psychoactive machine music for the second installment. "Heptagon" sports metallic synth notes clanging out over a freight train of techno drums, while "Prism" takes a more nimble approach to twist out its various synthetic squeaks. "Nitrogen" is a warmer proposition, placing the emphasis on chords and melodies while still aiming squarely at the dancefloor. "Thirty Four" finds the duo veering away from the 4/4 dogma to deliver a captivating kind of broken techno in a soundscape loaded with tension and ominous empty space.

Review: Norway meets Finland in this barbed disco soundclash as Skatebard and Stiletti-Ana go toe-to-toe on this alluring, dubbed-groove triptych. "Standard Moderne" flickers with a playful harmonic bassline while stern synth stabs wash over the top with heavy reverb. "Anaska" takes us deeper again with a soft-brushed shuffle, woozy pads and another restrained-but-uplifting bassline. Finally "Universet" has much more of Stiletti-Ana's spiked-out gothic charm as the iced-out synths take much more of a prominent lead. This is the two sound of countries working together.

Review: Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has been on our map since the late 00s, but it was his recent two-tracker for the excellent Type label which really cemented his strain of electronica into the back of our minds; an even more recent EP for Latency sealed the deal thanks to a magnificently percussive swarm of outsider electronics. More Than Human feels like precisely the sort of imprint that he should be landing on, especially if it's with an album like the present Two Orb Reel. Across 14 tracks, Lowe unleashes a controlled whirlpool of sonics, masterfully coaxed into a muddy, swamped sort of amalgam that explores the uncharted frontiers of ambient and beyond. Tunes like "Interzone Bureau Desk" provide movement amid the loose atmospherics, and others like "Telassar" offer a more tribal perspective to the equation. This is a fine LP, and one which will endlessly please those looking for something deep and mystical. 10/10.

Review: Yes Eglo! Alex Nut and crew turn to two elder statesmen of London beat science in Dego and Kaidi Tatham for a killer induction into the art of crafting 'broken beat bullets'. For those who don't possess the necessary knowledge, Dego is the most familiar handle of Dennis McFarlane, founding member of 4Hero and responsible for so much good music over the years, and Tatham has an equally important role in the whole Broken Beat movement, being an integral member of the Bugz In the Attic collective. The pair have worked together previously on numerous occasions and they are on top form here with lead track "Ankle Injury" demonstrating a perfect balance of melody and crafty rhythm. Imagine Theo and Floating Points collaborating and your heads in the right spot to enjoy this track and "Acting Up On That Shit Don't Count" which is the sort of music you could imagine RAMP to be making if they were on the rise today. Do check the sumptuous piano and Rhodes vibes on final cut "Carrots & Sesame"!!

Notes: This red plastic 45 RPM dome type record adapter is made from the original die. The dome allows you to quickly place a 45 RPM record on your player yet unlike spider adapters the dome still allows you to hold the record safely with 2 fingers by the large inner hold and outer edge. Also considered much easier to use than the standard 'hockey puck' design adapter.

Review: Chuck 'em in a black bag and give 'em a blotchy stamp. That's Delsin's modus operandi when it comes to re-releasing their favourite older material. And following their re-up of Son.Sine's beautiful Upekah 12", Claro Intelecto's first ever release makes its way on to the prominent Dutch label, a solid decade after it was first released on the now defunct Ai Records. For that 'must have' feeling "Tone" is the track you want to hear first; a gnarly acid work out of Drexciya-influenced techno that's been dragged through the mud and sounds all the better for it. Before that though there's a deeper and electro-leaning "Peace Of Mind (Electosoul)", and while "Signifier" mirrors it somewhat, it's deep house that's pure as the driven snow. And if you needed any more proof that Intelecto is the master of a phat-bassline, look no further than "Contact".

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With just one 7" release to their name in the form of the 1981 release, Jive Baby On A Saturday Night, the cult of The Jellies was possibly accidentally assured with the long lost song being rediscovered by collectors and championed by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore no less. Picked up and reissued by the stellar Trunk Records in 2010, the B-side cut, however, was sadly overlooked. Now Emotional Rescue are proud to license The Conversation and remaster it especially for this rerelease. Based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn't probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after Jive Baby had been completed. However, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. With just this one (perfect) track available for license it seemed only right to hand it over to the in-house production team, Apophenia, to do their increasingly trademark dubbed out reworking, this time in the form of a true, but respectful "Version" for the flip. With both members of The Jellies sadly now living overseas this piece of early '80s British dub as it were, can now be fully treasured for posterity while also, proving a nice little smokers delight.

Review: Emotional Rescue continue their exploration of the cult Miami label Dancefloor Records with this slice of sensual deep house heaven from the obscure Eighth Ray. Originally released in 1991, this is tripped out dance music of the highest order that, as the press release rightly says, aligns with the honey-coated grooves that were emanating from Italy at the time. With its effortless joie de vivre and warm, clear production, "Axis Of Love" is a perfect warm up or melt out jam. "8th Ray" is a more bleepy affair that wouldn't sound out of place rubbing up against some of the early Warp Records jams.

Review: Given that there have been 93 previous editions of Fabric's long-running mix series, you'd think DJs would struggle to find a new angle. Steffi, though, has had no such problems. The Berlin-based Dutchwoman has flipped the script by commissioning all 16 tracks especially for the mix. It's a neat trick and works well, with the result being a typically impressively put-together stroll through a myriad of techno, house, IDM and electro-related sounds. There are two exclusive Steffi collaborations (one with Martyn as Doms and Deykers, the other with Shed), alongside seriously good cuts from pals Dexter (solo and alongside Virginia), Late Night Approach, Answer Code Request, Privacy and UAS.

Review: Mid 70s soul and funk from the little-known Walter Jenkins. Originally pressed on Apollo off-shoot Faderkat, original pressings have been known for pass hands for a few hundred and it's not hard to understand why: "Back In My Life" is a swooning soul ballad with enough strut to move a floor while "Funky Walk (The Money Talk)" is a pumping northern crossover with big band leader style orders from Walter himself. Shake your money makers.

Review: As debut albums go, this sumptuous set from the previously unheralded Scott Gilmore is extremely impressive. It's made up of eight evocative and emotion-rich compositions layered in Jonny Nash style guitar, meandering analogue synthesizer motifs, swirling sonic textures and the sounds of dusty old instruments bought at yard sales in the producer's native California. While his influences - think Eno and Byrne, the Walker Brothers, quirky 1970s library music, easy listening and early Air, for starters - are obvious, none of the included tracks sound like heartfelt tributes. In fact, it's Gilmore's own musical voice - imaginative, atmospheric and quietly colourful, with a passion for lo-fi recording techniques - that makes Subtle Vertigo such a rewarding listen.
