Techno
  1. Rolling (6:58)
  2. Venice (6:14)
  3. Blue (6:57)
  4. Traffic (6:19)
Review: After building his reputation via releases on Plus 8 and M_nus, amongst others, Julian Jeweil has secured a big-money move to Drumcode. As you'd expect, all four tracks on this first label outing tend towards the forthright, with title track "Rolling" - a sweaty fusion of booming arpeggio bass, pounding kick-drums, foreboding riffs, metallic hits and drum machine handclap fills - setting the agenda. The "build and drop techno" blueprint is explored further on "Venice", before the experienced Frenchman opts for some full-throttle antics on "Blue". Sensing listeners need a little bit of a breather, he dips the tempo a little on "Traffic", which boasts some deliciously psychedelic acid lines.

Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

  4. I Don't Care (Bopperson remix) (6:09)
Review: The second version instalment that explores Kuti student Sosimi's 2015 album You No Fit Touch Am, Wah Wah have recruited more innovators to take fresh perspectives on Dele's crisp Afrobeat. DJ Khalab mirrors the guitars with rising synth textures that sit subtly in the background adding more tension that's released with a brilliant blunt bass hook. O Flynn adds just a little dubby disco charm to "E Go Betta" while Books gives "I Don't Care" a serious twist as it intros with swooshing Hidden Orchestra style breaks before dipping into a chugging house stomp. Bopperson closes on a slow smouldering note, creating more space around the Dele's beautiful instrumentation. Refixes fit to touch.

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: The Awakening is the seventh and final studio album from The Ahmad Jamal trio. It was originally released way back in 1970, and in the years since has become something of a must-have for jazz collectors. Given that finding original vinyl copies is getting increasingly difficult, this reissue is more than welcome. Musically, it's a boisterous and hugely entertaining affair, with Jamal's virtuoso piano playing taking centre stage. With an accompanying drummer and double bass player providing steady, if unspectacular, backing, Jamal tickles the ivories like a man possessed. Along the way, he doffs his cap to a number of then popular jazz styles, remodeling them in his own image.

  4. Track 4 (5:20)
Review: March has kicked off with some stellar house and techno pieces, but a return from the Parassela crew has made this the best month in a long while. We'd been truly missing this collaborative project between The Analogue Cops and Blawan, three minds which together helped to truly instil a sound within the contemporary house and techno game over the last five years. If you're listening to raw, stripped-back house these days, it's down to projects such as Parassela; that post-2010 wave of goodness very much includes these guys in the list. They return for one of their inimitable faux white labels on the Cops' own mighty Restoration label, and it's clear that they crew had been missing each other's company as of late. "Track 1" is classic Parassela nastiness thanks to a dark, intricate mould of hardware beats and distorted melodies with that unmistakable, tape-kissed hiss, and "Track 2" delivers more of the same except that the groove is more minimal here. On the flip, "Track 3" injects more of a house-centric movement into the equation, while "Track 4" heads off into sparser, more desolate territories that remind us of just how multi-talented this group of producers are. Unmissable, really...

Review: Chicago duo Kenny Gino and Mike T aka Solid Gold Playaz have consistently produced material since 1999 on a variety of labels. From Portland's Losonofono, through to Soulfuric Trax and even Berlin techno merchants Kanzleramt and not to mention their own Solid Gold Records. The Minds Beneath Atlantis EP comes courtesy of Jerome Deradji's esteemed Still Music and starts off with the absolutely sexy deepness of "Shhh (Quiet)" (feat DOT) which will appeal to proper deep house nostalgists like us, likewise "U With Me" has that Detroit style that calls to mind other great producers like Big Strick or Andres. On the flip, things take a turn for the more energetic and look more towards the Motor City than their Windy City again on the soulful techno workout "What Lies Beneath"

Review: Over the years Walter Jones has brought his smooth as silk disco sound to the likes of Westbound Records, DFA and Permanent Vacation, so there's no doubting his proficiency. Now he slides up to Whiskey Pickle with a set of pristine shakers that nod to his experience in the field, not least on opening track "Razzamatazz" with its chic lead lines and insistent groove. "Harmonic Urgency" is a sleazier affair with its cheeky bassline and slower tempo, but by way of contrast "The Grinder" ups the ante with a propulsive house backbone behind the sizzling disco elements. "Making Love" provides an alternate ending to the record with spaced out beatless daubs of synth.

Review: The Synthetic Gold story continues to unfold in the most curious nooks and crannies of the minimal techno scene, as this third volume welcomes in tracks selected by Anestie Gomez. Khan is in a looped up, insistent cycle loaded with alien synth tones and a focused rhythmic hiccup of a beat, truly aiming for the psych-out end of the night. Eloi Brunelle makes things a touch funkier on "Neneh", deploying choice splashes of dubbed out colour in between the sharp strut of the drums. Andres Garcia then spreads himself across the B-side with the loping funk of "Invisivel", working all manner of freaky sounds around the scuffed sway of the beats.

Constantly soaking up the sounds and spirit, he's now ready to unleash his own contributions with the "Busted" edit series. Consummately excavated and creatively extended we're hurtled deep into the high energy funk on the epic 13 minute "Love Is Torturing Me" and turbo gospel freak-out "Play Me Harder" before taking a deep hazy breath on the cosmic swampy funk of "Have A Cake". An accomplished debut. "Busted" makes us feel good.

Review: Little is known about Friction Band's hyper-rare 45" besides the fact it's a brilliant example of outsider, slightly experimental style of modern soul, it's passed hands for strong triple figures in recent years and it's just been injected with a whole new lease of life by Fryer. "Watchin' You" is a footloose boogie jam with unabashed use of freeform keys while "To The Sky" flips for a softer, more sentimental soul affair that's fringed by just the right amount of dreamy cosmicity. Another precision find by AOTN.

This surprise EP on Hypercolour is equally as impressive, with the trio laying down a quartet of angular-but-funky electro treats (think Autechre's more accessible moments). We're particularly enjoying the snappy, broken beat style hustle of "Civic Society", the Drexciya-style deep sea funk of "Lucid" and the far-out modular ambience of "Saunton", but it's all pretty darn tasty.

It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Notorious B.I.G. production) on their song "Get Money" in 1995 and also by Armand Van Helden on "Full Moon" in 2000. On the flip is the sexy and lo-slung "You Can't Turn Me Away" featuring some sexy funk guitar licks and bass beneath Striplin's powerfully seductive vocals.

Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. Review: Melbournian DJ/producer Bell Towers is one of Public Possession's most prolific artists. This 12" is his seventh for the Munich-based stable in just under four years. It's something of a celebratory, peak-time affair, with A-side "All Aboard" offering a near perfect balance of flanged, ear-catching disco guitars, elastic live bass, DJ-friendly special effects, and a house sensibility. "Night Train To Nowhere" is a more druggy and trippy affair, with Bell Towers channeling the spirit of kraut greats Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream on a cut that sits somewhere between Italo-disco, kosmiche, and quirky, left-of-centre house. In other words, it's another rock solid EP.

The original is classic Cinelli, pivoting around crisp, clean percussive lines and the bare essential atmospherics. Nektar Agu steps up for a remix that continues the minimalist theme, but adds some looming bass tones into the mix that pushes the track into a dubbier headspace. It's another slab of refined, stripped down tackle for the reductionist dancefloor, as you would expect from The Untold Stories.

Review: Sexing up the dance with every edit and beat he presents, Parisian Onra does it again with two hazy, slo-mo RnB renditions. Loopy, filtered, woozy and loaded with a warm soul feel that's so rich it almost flops over the drums, there's a real finesse at play as "Every Little Thang" struts with a great swagger as the kicks and vocal match each other's off-beat mood. Meanwhile on the B, "Just Can't Get Enuff" is just a smidgeon more upbeat and enshrouded in balmy pads and cleverly layered vocal loops. We can't get enough of this.

Review: Moonrise Hill Material co-founder Folamour makes his first appearance on Dublin's All City imprint, in the process delivering one of the most pleasingly positive deep house cuts we've heard for some time. "Shakkei" is marked out by wonderfully flowing piano lines of the kind that once turned "Strings of Life" into an all-time anthem. These combine wonderfully with the producer's loose-but-heavy, drum machine rich groove and near Balearic chord progressions. It's something of a stunner, all told. Elsewhere, Folamour explores deeper and dreamier pastures on "Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place", before reaching for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone, cheeky jazz-funk samples and Andres-esque grooves on "Each Day Is A Frist Day".

Review: Tech-house's own cockney rebel, East End Dubs, has been busy of late. The master of DJ tools and rhythm-focused box jams kept up a steady stream of releases in 2016, delivering a trio of coloured vinyl treats. His first missive of 2017 comes on psychedelically inclined "splatter" pattern vinyl, but doesn't stray far from his usual musical blueprint. On the A-side you'll find "Swing Riddim", where liquid chords and spacey electronics cluster around an immaculately programmed, bass-heavy tech-house groove. B-side "Lexa Groove" is a slightly deeper and more becalmed affair, even if it does boast a more sizeable bassline and chunkier drums.

Techno
  1. 5.34 AM
  2. Reduit
  3. Grindelwald (Summit edit)
Review: It's early days for Jakob Panthel and his Faune alias, but he more than steps up to the plate as London label Ornate Music invite him to present his vision for immersive, techno tinged deep house. "5.34 AM" is aptly named, the undulating chord pulse at the heart of the track aiming for the woozy hour of the dance before dawn breaks through. "Reduit" is a more sprightly affair, using similar ingredients but pushing a brighter line in synths amidst the raw drums. "Grindewald" meanwhile heads out into more ambient techno territory with its plush pads and snaking arpeggios, soothing the feisty club-ready energy of the previous two tracks.

  1. Ride (Solomun remix) (8:37)
  2. Ride (Audion remix) (6:54)
Review: Jack of all trades Dubfire teamed up with Swiss electroclash queen Miss Kittin for the dancefloor hit "Ride" in late 2016; a pop inflected tech house cut with sexy vocals that was aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Here it gets some remixes, firstly by Diynamic Records boss Solumun who'll have you boppin' away happily like a punter on his infamous Boiler Room Tulum session with his adrenalised rendition. But it's all about Matthew Dear aka Audion throwing down a fully tripped out exercise in dancefloor mayhem as per usual: his deep and minimal version crammed full of generous white noise washes, druggy vocals and ultra wonky synths. All you need right here!

Review: Before submerging himself in the world of electronic-acoustic fusion in 1977, Klauss Weiss had been best known as one of Germany's leading jazz drummers. 1978's Time Signals - here reissued on vinyl for the first time since - was not his first attempt to fuse early analogue synthesizers and home-made electronics with his own jazz-leaning drumming, but it probably remains his most successful exploration of this style. It's an album that successfully distils many influences - ambient, krautrock, Tangerine Dream, space rock, the Radiophonic Workshop, and so on - into a wealth of short, library music style tracks that impress with their imaginative approach to musical fusion. Throw in some killer drumming from Weiss - including some turntablist-friendly breaks - and you have an odd but thoroughly entertaining album.

Review: Since returning to action last year after a near two-year hiatus, Koos 'Ion' Ludwig has barely put a foot wrong. For Real We Are Not For You marks his first appearance on Toi.Toi. Musik, and predictably continues his fine run of form. On the A-side you'll find "Not For You", a woozy and slippery concoction where off-kilter electronic bleeps and delay-laden blips rise above a skewed, bass-heavy rhythm. Turn the record over and you'll find "Are We For Real", a wonderfully evocative combination of slow-burn acid lines, ghostly chords, low register cello strings, pulsing pads, and mind-altering, minimalist house percussion. It tends towards the melancholic, but is all the more impressive for that.

Review: When Kerri Chandler wrote the tracks that make up the Panic E.P way back in 1992, he was little more than an up-and-coming producer from East Orange, New Jersey. Much has changed in the quarter of a century since, but Panic remains one of the now legendary house producer's finest 12" singles. Check, for example, the snaking sax samples, thumping kick-drums and fluttering vocal samples of late night classic "Get Up", the bouncy New Jersey drums and undulating synth-bass of "Something Wrong" and the basement-bothering, disco-sampling wooziness of "Love Is Over". These are raw, stripped back house tracks from the top drawer that don't seem to have aged since the moment they first appeared in stores.

Review: Open Recordings continue their mission to champion quality chunky deep house wares from a range of artists on their third release. This time around Italian duo DNArt take the lead with two original jams, and they get things heating up nicely with "Short Story" before tripping things out on the swirling funk of "ZZYZX". On remix duties, Nick Beringer drops a tightly wound minimal house shuffle all over "Short Story" and then Frazer Campbell works up a deadly stripped down version of "ZZYZX", nudging the mellow tones of the original into prime late night material.

Review: Longstanding D&B operative with previous on the likes of Headz, Invisible, Critical and Subtitles, FD has been diligently carving a consistent path since 2010. Here he comes correct with two outstanding originals and a Calibre remix of a previous track "Ambra". "Serious" crunches and punches with some remarkable production touches and a bassline that lives up to the track title while "The Edges" takes us deeper down the tech rabbit hole on a stark two-step trip that wouldn't go amiss on Dispatch. And that's before we even get to the beautiful, piano-lingering Calibre remix...

  3. Track 3 (5:50)
  4. Track 4 (5:00)
Review: The origins of this collection of "superlarge disco-hits", and the producer (or producers) behind it, are shrouded in mystery. What we can tell you, though, is that the four scalpel style revisions included are rather good. While most will know the original version of the second track - a Paradise Garage fave conceived down Electric Avenue - it's rarely sounded this heavy or dubbed out. The rest of the material is undeniably obscure in origin, and veers from percussive, jazzy and intergalactic (the quirky space funk of "Track 4"), to celebratory off-kilter disco ("Track 3"), via the sparse, Yellow Magic Orchestra style brilliance of "Track 1". Grown up re-edits for those who prefer killer re-arrangements to cheap contemporary trickery.

Review: Roman in Brooklyn, Danilo Braca continues to pay homage to his new home with the second instalment of his edit series. Tapping deep into the city's tradition, each cut is as authentic and deeply dug as NYC's culture commands. Across the four tracks we're taken through the layers of Braca's make-up (and, most likely, DJ sets): the energetic disco funk of "Excuse Me Sir", the almost Nuyorican twangs of the jazzier "Illas", the hazy disco swoons of "Got Time For Love" and the beautifully psychedelic finale; the pipe-smoking, guitar-twanging cosmic trip that is "Big Foot". Big cuts.
