Review: To coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of Berlin club Tresor, Juan Atkins and Moritz Von Oswald have released a second Borderland album together. It begins in ominous mode, with the title track's brooding bass tones casting a long, dark shadow, but the pair soon find a way to break away from the gloom with the mesmerising chords and heavy rhythm of "Lightyears" and the wonderfully spacey Detroit techno of "Riod". Both "Odyssey" and "Merkur" push the tempo back down but keep an emphasis on hypnotic, woozy textures, snappy drums and jazzy tones, while "2600" shows that Van Oswald hasn't lost his ability to craft dub-heavy, dreamy techno.

Review: BCee returns to the scene with his third full length LP, and yes, it's a stunner. If you enjoy intricately woven drum and bass with a deeply rooted feel (designed with the dancefloor in mind), this ticks all the right boxes. Kicking off with the beautiful and deadly "Firebox", there is no let-up in high quality sounds throughout the extensive tracklisting. BCee teams up with LSB and Rocky Nti for the stunning "River Runs Dry", Villem employs the unmistakeable voice of Frank Carter to deliver "I Believe", and the one and only SPY reaches out with the soulful and deeply rolling "It Begins With You". You could be forgiven for bagging this for the top-drawer collaborations alone but of course BCee's own music here is this release's crowning achievement.

Review: Norwegian producer Biosphere has released countless albums since his 1994 debut Microgravity on Origo Sound. The artist has been an important part of Jon Wozencroft's legendary Touch imprint, and that places him in a position of respect within the ambient landscape. He's up on Smalltown Supersound with a new album this time, and we're wondering how it took so long for him to reach this feat seeing as the label is native to his home country. But that's neither here nor there and, in reality, what's really here is a stunning collection of soundscapes that span a duration of seventeen tracks. You should think of this more as one piece of sound, a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. While it could work perfectly as a soundtrack piece, these sublime flurries of sound have been crafted to perfection and with the upmost attention; Biosphere's vision is concrete, full of movement and direction. What an album. Ambient pick of the week from us.

Review: There was much gnashing of teeth from committed enthusiasts of the physical format when Maurice Fulton decided to release his latest Boof full-length - the follow-up to 2011's inspired Sshh, Dandelions at Play - solely as a digital download. Having rescued that album from obscurity via a physical release, Gerd Janson has decided to do the same with The Hydrangeas Whisper, here delivering a CD edition to complement the double LP version. Given the album's undoubted quality, it's something of a result for wax-maniacs everywhere. While Fulton takes a few odd turns - see the dubbed-out, trippy title track and after-party techno throb of "Backlash" - for the most part it's as expected, with the Chicagoan-in-London delivering a typically jazzy, disco-flecked range of sweet, life-affirming dancefloor cuts.

Review: To celebrate 20 years of BBE, the label has asked Keb Darge to gather together his personal highlights from the Legendary Deep Funk series he's been compiling since 1997. Naturally, his dusty-fingered selections - which can be heard in full on disc two - are undeniably spot-on, meaning that there's little in the way of filler or fluff. In fact, highlights appear at a rapid rate, from the James Brown style grunt of Ricky Calloway and Latin-influenced cheeriness of Sandi and Matues, to the anthem-like heaviness of Zebra's "Simple Song". These dancefloor hits are put into context on disc one, where turntablist extraordinaire Mr Thing cuts, scratches and juggles his way through Darge's superb selections.

Review: Dial regular Efdemin returns with a third album of a respected career, with the autumnal theme of Decay inspired by the German producer's three-month artist residency in Kyoto, Japan. Sollmann immersed himself in the local culture while in Kyoto, attending ceremonies with monks at temples and visiting local instrument makers. This results in a ten track set that canvasses the sort of poignant, introverted house music that's characterised much of Phillip Sollmann's work as Efdemin to date. There are however a few stylistic surprises along the way - the stripped back, jacking "Transducer" or the fusion of jazzy licks and noisy bursts of percussion that makes up the title track - but overall you'd be hard pushed to think of a better label to house Decay than Dial.

Review: New Richie Hawtin DJ mixes are something of a rarity these days, with his last commercially available selection dropping back in 2012. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that he's decided to indulge himself a little on this celebration of his Enter Ibiza residency, which stretches to an impressive four discs. The first CD is largely deep, woozy and tactile, with deep, tribal and tech-house fare from the likes of Pig & Dan and Marc Houle. Cuts from John Tejada, Radio Slave, Paul Johnson, DMX Krew and Daniel Bell help give the second disc a bumpin', tech-funk feel, while the third disc attractively flits between melodious, progressive influenced fodder and booming, bass-heavy fare. As for the last disc, it indulges Hawtin's lesser-celebrated love of ambient, via a range of evocative, spacey and becalmed cuts.

Review: The new Spacetalk label gets off to a flying start thanks to this compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: There have been plenty of column inches devoted to this collaborative debut album from hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Rhythm Section International sort Henry Wu), and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such raw talent to choose from, it's little surprise to find that Black Focus is as good as the critics claim. Their sound is distinctive: a London-centric take on jazz-funk that's loose, rich, organic and shot through with soul. Their major influences seem to be the work of West London broken beat pioneer Kaidi Tatham, and his inspiration, jazz-funk legend Herbie Hancock. These touchstones, combined with Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and jammed-out Rhodes lines, makes Black Focus a hugely alluring set.

Review: Way back in 1974, Wailers members Aston "Family Man" Barrett and brother Carlton Barrett joined forces with dub maestro King Tubby to produce an album for Keith Hudson's obscure Mamba imprint. Since then, Pick-A-Dub has become something of a cult hit, with reggae fans lapping up previous reissues on Simply Vinyl and Blood & Fire. This latest reissue - the first for 15 years - has been faithfully re-mastered, allowing the booming basslines, clipped guitars, and King Tubby's brilliant production to shine. Given the quality of the material, which sits sounds like The Wailers in dub crossed with the heavyweight madness of Lee "Scratch" Perry, it wouldn't be stretching it to call Pick-A-Dub a genuine dub classic.

Review: Prins Thomas doesn't do things by halves. Having recently released another triple-disc mix album - the rather fine Paradise Ghoulash - he's decided to make his latest album a quadruple-vinyl set. Intriguingly, it also sees him set aside "all conventional drums and drum machines" in order to create a series of epic, evocative, slowly evolving ambient pieces. These were seemingly equally as inspired by classic ambient house - think the Orb/Robert Fripp collaboration FFWD, early System 7, and so on - as IDM tracks of the 1990s. Whatever the exact inspiration, each of the 9 tracks is utterly beguiling, and hugely suited to horizontal home listening.

Review: Given the richness of texture that characterises Jon Tye and Pete Fowler's prolific work together under the Seahawks name, it's no surprise to see such a splendid cast of artists willing to dive in and play around with their music. And so we have Deep Haul, a 12 track collection of remixes, redubs, reworks and what not featuring the likes of Prins Thomas, Ruf Dug, Secret Circuit, Pye Corner Audio and more casting their sonic magic over some gems from the Seahawks discography. It's little surprise Scandolearic don Prins Thomas comes through with an early highlight in the shape of a deft electronic disco rework of "Look At The Sun" (that bassline) but don't brush over Rune Lindbaek's sub aquatic Balearic Italo take on "Rainbow Sun" or the charmingly warm Forever Sound remix of "Paradise Freaks".

Review: Markus Nikolai and Zip's peerless Perlon imprint gives a commanding lesson in music - the raw, minimal and dubby kind - via this superlative 28 track mix double CD of unreleased material, the fifth instalment of their Superlongevity series. The names themselves are enough to have us salivating - Baby Ford, Shackleton, Sammy Dee, Cassy, Portable Riccy Villalobos all appear - as well as the first Daniel Bell track since 2003, which is utterly amazing if we do say so ourselves. And it's all mixed together in superb fashion, with a neat line drawn between the artists and styles that make up the label's towering roster.

Review: Although most will associate soul with the Motor City of Detroit, it could be argued that Chicagoan artists played just a big a role in its later development and popularization. This Love Is For Real attempts to tell the story of Chicago's impact on soul, not via the city's best-known artists (Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, for example), but rather records written, produced and performed by lesser-known Windy City talents. There's naturally much to admire, from the classic sweetness of the Chi-Lites' "(Um, um) My Baby Loves Me" and the Mayfield-esque "Second Story Man" by Chocolate Sunday, to the impassioned bliss of "This Love Is Real" by the Lovelites, and the rock-tinged passion of Windy City's "Just For You".

Review: Less than seven months after volume two hit stores, Color Tapes presents a third trawl back through the notoriously independent label's obscure, early '80s back catalogue. Like its' predecessors, Cold Waves Of Color 3 gathers together tracks from cassettes and 7" singles that Gary Ramon's label over ever released in ludicrously limited quantities. Beginning with the breezy, pop-tinged electro brilliance of Dukes Of Disrespect's "You Tell Lies (Banging Away)", the compilation delivers a breathless sprint through off-kilter synth-wave, electronic experiments, minimal wave darkness, and the kind of far-sighted - but on-point - material that's near impossible to pin down. In other words, volume three is every bit as essential as its' predecessors, and thrice the fun.

Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.
