Dynamically generated wavetable oscillator using multiple orthogonal functions
Notes: Cursus Iteritas is an oscillator that works from a dynamically generated wavetable. It gives the user spectral-like controls over three different modes based on different conceptualizations of frequency: Fourier, which uses sine waves; Daubechies, using wavelets, and Walsh mode, using the Walsh transform. Cursus Iteritas parametrizes a wide variety of sounds, but because the sounds are all based on orthogonal functions, it has a musical tone structure and can produce an extremely wide variety of harmonic sounds.

Review: Original copies of Georges-Edouard Nuoel's 1975 contribution to the Now We're Going to Feature the Pianist in the Band series have recently been changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. Listening to this beautifully packaged reissue, it's easy to see why. Nouel is in fine form throughout, delivering impressively dexterous, on-form piano and electric piano improvisations over killer backing tracks that variously touch-on freestyle jazz-funk, Sun-Ra style spirutualism, Afro-Cuban sweatiness and frenetic interpretations of traditional jazz. Arguably the best moment of all, though, is atmospheric closer "Alfie", in which Nouel takes a considered and laidback approach to proceedings.

Review: The clue is in the title... OTE step up with two sparkling afro diamonds right here. Two of the coolest sides of the vibe coin, too: "Back To Kingston" is a carnival meltdown-in-waiting. Acidic, stamping, scorched with horn drama and gutsy vocals, this will absolutely shatter floors this summer. The label's own Jimmy Rogue maintains the heat with a much deeper, understated funk build on "Yeah Yeah", but when that acid and those horns riff back in.... Oh boy.

Review: This important album and piece of true electronic music history gets a re-issue; on 180 gram vinyl. What can be said for this album that has not been said already? Well, it is known for the classics "Halcyon (On & On)" and "Lush" and the brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll are not just UK rave legends but pioneers of electronica that is for sure. Named after Greater London's orbital motorway, the M25, which was ground zero for the rave scene of the late eighties. This album is as seminal as it gets and a true zeitgeist of a moment in electronic music's history. Re-issues don't come much better than this!

Review: It's becoming something of a cliche to describe tech-house tracks as "bouncy", but there's no denying that "Planet Pan", the lead cut from Giammarco Orsini's latest EP, is rubbery and boisterous. The drum track and bassline both doff a cap to the skipping grooves of 4.4 UK garage, though the musical elements surrounding them - spacey chords, bleeping melody lines, and so on - both scream "techno". Elsewhere, the experienced Italian producer melds undulating TB-303 acid lines with a smooth, Motor City influenced tech-house groove on "Divenire", before layering robotic electronics and minor key chords on top of sprightly drum machine beats on pleasing B-side workout "Any Robots Here".

Review: With the sunnier days beckoning, Osunlade's brand of deep house music comes into its own, and likewise his taste in remixers lends itself to balmy climes. Picking up his "Camera Shy" cut from the recent A Man With No Past Originating The Future LP, Andres is the first to get frisky with a glorious rough hewn bumper that drops in some choice strings, a cheeky bassline and plenty of MPC attitude. Alex and Chris, whoever they may be, opt for a more restrained piece that slowly lilts along in brushed percussion and wooden melodies, while Justin Imperiale gets the pot stirring with a more prominent rhythm section and some synth-horn freestyling. Oskar Offermann takes up the most energised stance to the release, working a techy snare into the driving beat while the existing melodic elements flit around with appropriate urgency for the situation.

"Sweet Caress" is a thumping, snaking, twisting jam that builds with dynamic orchestration that has all the dramatic hallmarks of Whitfield and Strong. "Live & Let Live", meanwhile takes Charles Earland's "Coming To You Live" and adds a funkier cosmic sheen by way of synth overlays, filters, crowd noises and cheeky reverse flexes. Otherlovely, more like!

Review: Fela Kuti and Tony Allen are your key starting points when it comes to the wild frenetic Afrobeat fusion Nigeria gave us in the late 60s but dig a teeny bit deeper and you'll find multi instrumentalist Tunji is right behind them. Armed with his band The Benders, Tunji ran a tight ship and perhaps should've done with a little more recognition. Now living and gigging in London, he's curated this essential collection of tracks from Afrobeat's most prolific era.

Review: The Dublin based imprint Fatty Fatty Phonographics return with a second volume of Re-Jigs, with Pablo & Shoey once again at the helm. It's hard to ignore the humongous A Side "Love Power" that amps up the electro boogie levels on a Jocelyn Brown classic and should have every last foot moving long before they drop in that instantly recognisable "I've Got The Power" vocal hook. From here, they pay homage to the 90s mixtapes of Detroit's Terrence Parker on "TP With The Ill Behaviour" which successfully merges the string heavy "Fly Robin Fly" from Silver Convention with the instantly recognisable accapella from Wildchild's "Renegade Master" - one for the crazy point in a house party son. Pablo & Shoey switch it up again to end on "Let Me Love Ya" a powerful eighties boogie monster that hooks you long before the vocal arrives.

Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Review: ** REPRESS ** The curiously named Lobster Theremin label comes from some of the minds behind London's excellent Streets Of Beige club night, and arrives with a mission statement to provide a platform "for new and emerging international artists of a tougher aural leaning". The label's first release provides the debut of Palms Trax, a Berlin-based producer and sometime Streets Of Beige DJ. Entitled Equation, the record provides a bold debut for label and producer; sharing the same misty eyed, '80s-influenced approach to house music as Max D and the Future Times crew, the three original tracks here are amongst some of the finest house music released this year, with the angular strings and thick arpeggio of the title track an undisputed standout. WT Records boss Willie Burns provides the release's only remix, in which he turns in a VHS-saturated take on "Late Jam" which is another essential for Burnett completists. Essential!

Review: Nothing if not reliable in terms of both the prolific nature of his output and its quality, maverick Berlin-based satyr Anton Newcombe has mapped out a back catalogue of gloriously lackadaisical '60s-fixated psychedelic pop that transcends his original genius-or-madman mythos. Yet this new collaboration with London-dwelling Canadian songwriter Tess Parks marries his trademark heavy-lidded atmosphere and outlaw cool with fresh inspiration and potent delivery from his new foil. Parks' acidic drawl elevates these late-night serenades to new heights of decadence and intrigue, arriving at a sound somewhat akin to a vision of Mazzy Star in Hell. A welcome curveball from a master of the psych-rock art and a compelling new talent.

Review: Don't let this one go over yo head son! The final repress from Sound Signature HQ is an essential slab of late 90s Motor City deepness from Theo, presented once again for contemporary reassessment and sounding every bit as jaw dropping 14 years on. Dropping back in 1999, title cut "Overyohead" came to be regarded as a quintessential Theo Parrish track; strings incandescent with soul and lovingly off centre Rhodes riding those heavy drum arrangements towards a sweet piano infused crescendo. Face down, "Dance Of The Drunken Drums" is a prime example of Theo's own distinct brand of cavernous beatdown.

Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

  16. Theo Parrish - "Selector's Theme"
  17. Theo Parrish - "Dance Of The Drunken Drums"
Review: Theo Parrish doesn't serve up many mix CDs these days, so it's good that he's making a swathe of classic recordings available again. Live In Detroit was initially recorded and released back in 1999, and sees the Motor City house legend joining the dots between the cosmic deep house and raging acid tracks of Larry Heard, the intergalactic jazz-funk of Herbie Hancock, the percussive disco onslaught of the Erotic Drum Band (the drum-heavy madness of "Jerky Rhythm"), and a sprinkling of '80s boogie favourites. The great man also reaches for a number of his own impeccable productions, and keeps things moving with the skill of a true master.

  4. Penguin Cafe & Cornelius - "The Track Of The Dull Sun" (4:30)
Review: Worlds collide as the iconic Penguin Cafe and Japanese producer Cornelius join forces for this four-track Umbrella EP. The pair crossed paths in 2012 when Penguin Cafe were touring in Japan and Cornelius' band Saryu Saryu supported them in Tokyo. Since then they decided to seize the opportunity to work together and have reworked and reimagined existing tracks of their own, alongside two new Penguin Cafe songs. Penguin Cafe was founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, bringing together a diverse and disparate group of musicians from the likes of Suede, Gorillaz and Razorlight, initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes' legacy of world renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, ten years after his untimely death in 1997. Arthur, a composer in his own right, quickly began to create new and unique genre-defying music, with the spellbinding philosophy of the Penguin Cafe always in his mind. The project has evolved into something at the hands of Arthur who utilises many different instruments and influences including elements of African, Venezuelan, Brazilian, bluegrass, classical, avant-garde and minimalist music.

Review: It's a fairly well established fact that legendary dub reggae producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry was at his most mercurial during the years spent behind the desk at his own Black Ark Studio. He would eventually burn it down, of course, but not until he'd helped define the dub sound with a string of killer riddims and brilliant vocal cuts. This compilation from Sanctuary tells the story of those years, gathering together the originally Jamaican-only 7" singles Perry produced in the studio. As you might expect, it's a killer collection, gathering together well-known material - "Police & Thieves", "Vibrate On", "No Peace" etc. - lesser-known classics and flipside dubs. I
