Review: Stone Flower was a little-known, short-lived record label licensed exclusively to Sly Stone himself. It produced but four singles in the period 1970-74, and beyond that, saw to a short run of LPs from the likes of Gladys Knight, Herbie Mann and Eddie Jefferson. However, thanks to a series of retakes and bonus material, LITA were able to reproduce this compilation; a compendium of all the best music the label had to offer, with choice bits from Joe Hicks, Sly, Little Sister and 6ix in tow.

Review: Here's an enchanting curio from the hidden folds of the mid 70s - a folk soul hybrid recorded by Shira Small when she was a student at a small Quaker boarding school in Pennsylvania. Having grown up in Harlem, Small found herself spending four years in this more bucolic setting at a time when the American youth was grappling with the consternation of the Vietnam war and the bittersweet reality of the world in the post-hippie era. Encouraged to record her songs as a school project, the end results are frankly unbelievable, hitting a note somewhere between Joni Mitchell's meandering delicacy and Shuggie Otis' psychedelic lilt, but coming through with her own strident voice. The album is a marvel which will bring joy, balance and reflection to anyone who hears it.

Review: Even by the standards of nerd-friendly underground deep house, Germany's Smallpeople work slowly. This debut album has been three years in the making, during which time they've released just a handful of 12" singles. Like much of their previous output, Salty Days is very deep; in fact, some of the tracks are so understated they'd be greeted by whispers on the dancefloor. There are more uptempo moments, of course - see the fluid snappiness of "Down With Your Vision" or mildly sweaty "Beauclair" - but the overall mood is intoxicatingly deep and atmospheric. In truth, it's all the better for it. You see, at times Salty Days is mesmerizing.

Review: American alternative rockers and, if you're anything like us, teenage favourites the Smashing Pumpkins, dropped their second album Siamese Dream in July of 1993. Frontman and vocalists Billy Corgan produced it with Butch Vig and the sessions were reportedly marked by difficulties and tensions but that didn't stop the record from debuting at number ten on the Billboard chart and going on to be certified quadruple Platinum. For the way it brings alt-rock, metal, shoegaze, indie and psychedelic influences to commercial rock it is often regarded as a gold standard of its era with high production values and ornate arrangements at odds with many of its peers.

Review: Long-term Pumpkins fans might have been forgiven for thinking that Billy Corgan had taken leave of his senses of late, given his ventures into wrestling management and the eight-hour freeform modular synth take on Herman Hesse's Siddhartha that he baffled an audience with in his coffee shop recently. Yet fear not: on the evidence of Monuments To An Elegy, the combination of riff attack, fragile melody and plaintive melancholy that was at the heart of the Pumpkins' classic work is very much present and correct, not to mention Corgan's charismatic songwriting suss. Monuments To An Elegy is a fitting title, for both the rock solid and emotionally engaging elements of classic Pumpkins are here explored anew.

Review: The Smashing Pumpkins' transformation from melodic alt-rock deities to synth-driven electronic boppers is complete. Well, almost. The titular single certainly fits that easy narrative, laser beam chords and string refrains bursting from behind a track that bounces with a light disco punk energy. In truth, of course, there has always been far more to Bill Corgan et al than the alternative rock tag often implies, and even right back to their formative years the crew were toying with expectations.
2018's Rick Rubin-produced Shine And Oh So Bright... album may have emphasised their rock roots, but now we're given their creative juices in full flow on their poppiest outing yet, partly inspired by the roster of seminal Chicago label Wax Trax!, the US home to Underworld and The KLF among others. Needless to say, though, the Pumpkins make it sound like they've lived here all along; testament to their unwavering dedication to trying new ideas and knack at pulling them off.

Review: It's been more the 20 years since the era-defining Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness album of Smashing Pumpkins fame, and although some will argue albums of recent years may not have been quite as wrapped up in the 'zeitgeist' of their previous works, it's with a touch of 'melancholy' we say that Shiny & Oh So Bright Vol 1: No Past No Future No Sun harks back to that feeling of the 1990s past that made the band so defining. Produced in accordance with Rick Rubin - helping cast the sound of Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers to System Of A Down, Slayer and countless others - this album hits that sweet spot again with the band's founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Review: Of all the grunge era survivors, The Smashing Pumpkins are surely one of the most grandiose. Staying true to that premise, Billy Corgan revels in a majority original line-up being back together to create a whopping triple-sized concept album which picks up the thread from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Machina/The Machines of God. Atum is billed as a rock opera served in three acts, veering from heavier sounds bordering on metal to the catchier, poppier sound heard on lead single 'Beguiled' and into more esoteric territory. This four-vinyl edition gathers together the entire magnum opus in one lavish box set - a must-have for devotees of the veteran US rockers.

Review: Smegma emerged out of LA's creative underground around 1973 and since then they've forged an uncompromising path well outside the usual strictures of generic definitions and the music industry as a whole. Through sheer conviction they received appropriate nods, from releasing on Mute to being tipped on the coveted Nurse With Wound list. Drawing on jazz as one of their core influences, their first officially released LP Glamour Girl 1944 landed in 1979 and set the tone for a band shirking convention every step of the way. Unavailable on wax since its original release, you can only imagine what second hand copies were shifting for. True fans rejoice, this landmark record is now back within reach.
