Deep House
  1. 2DeepSoul - "Home"
  2. Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Deserted"
Review: We can't remember the last time we came across a 7" single of straight-up deep house. Certainly, it's a novelty, though there's little novel or cheeky about the two tracks showcased on this diddy, coloured vinyl release from Spain's Minuendo label. 2DeepSoul's A-side, "Home", is effortlessly melodious - a warm, rich and enticing blend of shuffling rhythms, swirling chords and the kind of blissfully electronic melodies that make you want to dance with your eyes shut. There's a more organic and quietly soulful feel about Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana's flipside effort, "Deserted". Blessed with a delicious double bass line, bespoke keys and a whisper of Motor City techno (in terms of the electronics, at least), it's a sublime chunk of sensual deepness.

  3. Julien Sandre & Mennie - "Spacer" (7:50)
  4. Laurent Ci - "Turn" (8:06)
Review: Berlin's Ewax are back with more lush yet tough deep house goodness, on another various artists compilation. Starting out on the A side with the smooth late night groove of "The Old Shit" by Spanish duo Carlos Vila & Hector Avila aka 2vilas while the second offering on the A side comes courtesy of The Willers Bros with "Quantise" where the EGG London residents throw down some loopy swing fuelled tech house. On the flip Julien Sandre & Mennie turn the heat up on "Spacer" (our personal favourite on here!) while Laurent Ci's "Turn" shows us something emotive to dance to.

  2. Carlo Gambino - "Acid Casual"
  3. Ben Dean - "Track Three"
  4. Michael Scott - "Underdisc"
Review: "After 10 years away from vinyl, 3am Wax Vol.1 hails a return to 12' on the label, now in its 13th year. The EP features an all-3am regular artist cast, three making their debut on vinyl and one making a return to 12' after a 12 year gap. 3am boss Al Bradley opens the EP, while label regulars Carlo Gambino, Ben Dean and Michael Scott all return for the 12". With over 400 releases and remixes between the artists, the EP showcases in-house talent from the label - the emphasis on quality rather than names. Ranging from Berlin-influenced deepness through to raw analog acid house, the EP has been doing damage at label gigs throughout 2015 including Berlin, Ibiza, Copenhagen, New York, London & label-home Leeds, with plaudits and support also coming in from a wide range of DJs from the promo."

Review: Croatian crate diggers and disco doyens Legalize Lambada come correct with their second EP: Swedish Frisbee chucker Albion takes the lead with two contrasting slices: Like a big old furry beast, "Yetti" bears demonic vocal teeth but shows a much softer side through its instrumentation while "Into Infinity" is, as its name suggests, pure cosmicity. Flip for a trip to Austria with Mike Burns as we're treated to early '80s European disco, "Enyin," and a bumper-to-bumper yacht hymn "This Ground". Lambada licking good. So good, in fact, it has to be illegal.

  2. Mary Clark - "Take Me I'm Yours" (Pablo & Shoey Re-jig) (8:05)
  3. Rena - "Dance It Off" (Pablo & Shoey Re-jig) (8:53)
Review: Mancunian scalpel fiends Pablo & Shoey have been rather quiet of late. Surprisingly, this is the first EP in their popular Downtown Sounds Classics series for almost two years. In a nod to Manchester's once-thriving electro scene, the A-side is given over to a tasty, on-point rearrangement of Aleem's 1984 breakdance classic "Release Yourself", which once helped inspire a generation of future dance music producers. On the flip, Mary Clark's recently reissued 1980 disco classic "Take Me I'm Yours" goes under the knife, before they finish with a high-octane chunk of obscure disco silliness: Rena's ludicrously hard to find "Dance It Off". Their edit is fairly reverential, sticking to the loose and sweaty feel of the original.

  1. Alemayehu Eshete - "Tchero Adari Negn" (4:27)
  2. Mahmoud Ahmed - "Bemin Sebeb Litlash" (4:26)
Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Check their other material on Mississippi for a broader introspective.

Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Flip for the previously rare 1980 recording by Ivory Coast's Moussa Doumbia whose smoky vocals and JB-level shrieks hit hard over a clam-tight Afrofunk rhythm. What a way to start a new series.

Review: After a series of 12" releases of original material, Blue Hour calls on some contemporaries to lay down the truth with Answer Code Request, Marcelus, and Steffi on board to remix. Up first, ACR tears into "Axis Motive", stripping everything back to a big kick drum fuelled by subtle breaks, and a gorgeous storm of pads - proper chimerical. Singular boss Marcelus rewires "Reference 97", and unlike his usually menacing approach, this tune is deep, visceral and full of soul; Berlin house Dj and producer Steffi adds some class and love to "Moments". A wonderful touch, and an altogether full-bodied EP.

Review: London label i&i Musik surfaces with their debut transmission which spreads a powerful yet roots-laden message from the combined talents of Jamaica's highly acclaimed reggae veteran Mike Brooks, Archiver, Adalphus, and Matteo Boyero. Up top, the original version of "Pusherman" sees the vocals of Brooks sit perfectly over an Archiver production, followed by a classic dub take. Here Archiver strips back the track allowing all the intricate layers to breathe with the guitars (courtesy of Matteo Boyero), flutes & driving bass and drums taking centre stage. Down below Archiver and Boyero team up with Wallace Adalphus whose vocals bring an infectious and positive charm to "Good Morning". Review: Some of the less charitable critics out there referred to Juan Atkins and Mortiz Van Oswald's side-project as 'boredomland'. While the pair's debut album under this name was a largely sedate affair, on the evidence of this single, they will be opting for a more engaging approach for the follow-up. It's not hard to hear both producers' influence on "Riod"; Van Oswald's love of layered textures and hollowed out drums comes up against Atkins's vivid melodies and synths from outer space. On the alternate version they venture even farther down the dreamy route, with hypnotic chords guiding the way.

Review: K209 are slowly making their way out of the shadows and in doing so more of their personality is revealed. Prior to this release you'd never hear hyped vocals say something like 'over here', but that's exactly what happens over the grungy bassline and drums that is "Sleeper". "14vac" sounds like a broken down service lift trying to regenerate itself, but it's the sound of "Duality" that will be most familiar with followers Henning Baer and Milton Bradley. This record, though, is all about the B-side thanks to the ripping gurgle of "Divergence" and "Beat 992" which sounds like an old school Do Not Resist The Beat 12" mixed with Milton Bradley Prologue. Big techno.
