Review: If this is your first encounter with Follakzoid then prepare to feel a blustering wind rushing through your hair, even if that is only symbolically speaking. Hailing from Chile, the three piece proudly lay claim to influences that date back to the ancient music of the Andes mountain range dominating a vast chunk of their homeland. But if you didn't know that, their work would likely strike you as blisteringly powerful progressive rock with math, garage and grunge elements.
Or at least that's certainly true of 'El Humo', third track on this self-titled gem that feels purpose built for sweaty basements down dodgy backstreets. And the same can be said for 'Directo Al Sol'. Elsewhere, though, more spiritual nuances dominate. 'Loop' seems to send its loose guitar twangs into the cosmos, while 'Sky Input II' invites us to look over the edge of the peak into an endless beyond. Magical stuff.

Review: Follakzoid are a real cult favourite who originally hail from Santiago, Chile, and now based in Mexico City. Over the last 15 plus years they have put out a wide array of ever-evolving sounds that has found several different artists involved in the production and writing processes. From post-punk to psychedelic rock, Krautrock to electronica, they cook up mutant sounds that come from mostly improvised sessions and have done so over the course of a wide range of compelling albums. II is one of them and now gets a reissue on Scared Bones with a special gold pressing.

Originally hailing from Santiago, Chile, but now based in Mexico City, over the past 16 years output has gone through various mutations and stylistic developments, shapeshifting depending on where home was at that time and who was involved in the production and writing processes. Melding post punk, psychedelic rock, Krautrock and electronica, largely improvised sessions give birth to mutant tracks that live in the dark, strobe-hued corners of industrial rooms and subterranean dens. Following up the critically acclaimed I (released in 2019), V represents yet another evolution in sound, as elements of techno are brought to the fore, accentuating the dance floor potential of all they do.

Review: Alex Font is charged with serving up the MINIMALER Factory label's first release and an ambitious one it is too - Cross The Limits: Chapter 1 (we wonder how many chapters there might be?) is a minimal and tech house triple pack that offers a wealth of club-ready sounds. They are embellished with all manner of abstract details and creeping sound designs, from trippy pads to whispered vocals. Each one is intricately designed and carefully arranged to be in a constant state of flux that very much keeps you locked from start to finish. A trio of fine remixes from Dubtil, Franco Cinelli and Alexis Cabrera add further gravitas to this strong album.

Review: Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C. last appeared don our radar when the Baron of Techno MR Dave Clarke was busy remixing them. Review: But Here We Are is the new album from Foo Fighters, and marks the band's return after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection and bittersweet remembrances. Evidently a well-justified most-personal-album-yet moment for Grohl and co., the album follows the untimely passing of the band's longtime drummer and founding member, Taylor Hawkins, in 2022. Murmurations that Foo Fighters were going to be an entirely different band going forward have now been proven correct: while noted to have been intentionally made to channel the naivete of their debut namesake LP, songs like 'Rescued' and 'The Teacher' also bring several decades' worth of 'maturity' to theirs sound. They add a new, central theme: the fleeting nature of life.

Review: Remarkably, the last Foo Fighters retrospective dropped way back in 2009, so this career-spanning 'best of' is undoubtedly well overdue. As a starting point for exploring their catalogue - or, for confirmed fans, having all the band's best bits in one place - The Essential Foo Fighters does an excellent job. There are naturally plenty of grungy, high-energy, guitar-laden alternative rock smashers present - 'Rope', 'Monkey Wrench' and so on - but also nods towards the more classic rock-orientated end of their work ('Cold Day In The Sun', the Beatles-esque 'Big Me'), punky and funky indie club anthems ('All My Life') and a smattering of acoustic and semi-acoustic gems ('Waiting On a War' and a wonderfully sparse, folksy take on 'Everlong'). Like Ronseal products, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
